[GVT] What is Argonne National Laboratory?

http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=stor...and_security_6

Bush planned to give a speech Monday about his proposed new department and view demonstrations of high-technology devices for combatting terrorism that are being developed at the Argonne National Laboratory in Illinois.

Is this article talking about the laser weapons deal or more "spooky stuff"...

Research in the MCS Division at Argonne National Laboratory is funded principally by the DOE Mathematical, Information, and Computational Sciences Division, Office of Computational and Technology Research of the U.S. Department of Energy.

Our mission is to increase scientific productivity in the 21st century by providing intellectual and technical leadership in the computing sciences -- computer science, applied computational mathematics, and computational science.

Deb,

Argonne is about 5 minutes from my house.... My husbands company is one of the few interior construction companies they use for remodeling and such.... High end security required for any one of their employees used on work at the facility. What a place it is I tell ya. I've been there a few times... Always worried me some that I live so close to this place

As I recall the PR pushes you to think "high end mathmatics".

Things like Super Computers.
Things like particle colliders.
Theoretical physics.
but what they really mean is:
Designing Atomic Warheads
Designing Atomic Warheads
Designing Atomic Warheads.

I reserve of course the right to be totally incorrect since I have never been there and don't know anyone who works there.

Deb;

Argonne is just one of several National Labs. It is not
as dedicated to weapons reseach as is Livermore or
Los Alamos, but a little more so than Berkeley.

They get goverment contracts and develop insturmentation,
physics experiments, the such. I forget exactly what
the Argonnes current big forte is but it is pretty benign.

Lots of really good people work there, I have met many of
them at conferences and such.

Look on Google for National Labs, or Argonne national Lab.

Used to live 1 minute from there. Used to make deliveries there. Used to show girl friends the white deer that live there. Used to impress them when I told them they glow in the dark at night because of the radiation. Ha. Also noted that the creek running thru never froze in the winter. Don't tell anyone where it is. Wife drives by there every day. Hate to see someone put it on their target list. Nice area. Vipper, don't forget to wave when you see us come by. What kind of signal can you use so we know your not just flipping us off?
Safe times
Jim
