Sorry to hear this Kris. Summerthyme gave good advice. My friend's dog did this about a year ago. He is still with her. They think it was a stroke. Hang in there, if it is his time then you will be with him and love him and give thanks for 14 wonderful years of love. God be with you today.

((((Kris)))) no day is ever a good day, when we realize a much loved friend and companion, is reaching the end of their journey, in this world.
Jake has been blessed to share this life with you and your family. Imagine all the wonderful memories he has? All the wonderful memories you made together? Summerthyme gives good advice. Spoil him all you can, keep him comfortable and close by......... (tried to post this on the other thread, but I kept getting timed out)

Why today? A chance to say thanks for all the time spent together before whatever it is that comes next. Hang in there. Most of us have been there and know.

Oh, Kris, I'm so sorry for you. We love our babies, and they love us back so much that when it's time for them to pass we have such a big hole in our hearts.
Many of us have been there, and know what you are going through. My dad died one year ago today, so I'm kinda weepy anyway but really haven't had a good cry because his passing was kind of a blessing. If my Duppy (papillion) were to be imperilled I'd be a mess. Wish you all the best and hoping it's not the end of the road, but if it is be thankful for the years of love.

I lost a precious chihuahua named Jake in 2004 to something that presented much like this, sounds like vestibular diease. My little guy lived 8 months after diagnois, ask your vet about it or also EGD, small dogs and older age, both a common. If it is steroids will bring him right back around.

Losing the furkid(s) always hurts, no matter when it happens.
Lost our 17 YO Siamese on Dec. 21 just about five years ago. We really really hate the onset of winter every year now as it brings back the painful loss one more time. It still hurts and will always hurt - nor can another furkid ever truly take their place. Truly sorry for the loss & grief you're going through. |

Kris, please do like Summerthyme said. do the baby aspirin thing and then keep him snug somewhere that you can be near and watch him.
It may not be what you think.

Prayers for you and Jake, Kris. We just got a couple of dogs to replace our twin pups, the second of which died last Jan. It really helps a lot to be groaning under the weight of two dogs on your lap, with a cold nose in your face. (That probably grosses some of us out)
It hurts a lot when you see them getting weaker and we can't do anything about it. regards, Garryowen |

Update....
Jake is a bit better today. Eating and drinking and doing his business in a fairly normal fashion so nothing is shutting down at this point. But he is still wandering around sort of confused looking but at least not falling over, stumbling, etc. We did get him into the vet today and he doesn't think it is immediately life threatening. But without spending lots of $$$ for tests no way to know for sure what it is and since at his age we would not spend tons of $$$ on extraordinary treatments anyway, he said pretty much what you guys have said on this and the other thread in regards to how to take care of him. He said it could have been a seizure or some other sort of brain event, stroke etc. and that it of course could happen again at any time or he could continue to get better slowly and make almost a full recovery and have a few more years left in him. He also said it could be a sort of doggie Altzheimer's as well and that the "wandering around confused" could continue but there are some drugs we could try that work about 50% of the time. We're awaiting blood test results before making any further treatment decisions. For now, things are not quite as bleak as they appeared Wednesday night and Thursday morning. Thanks everyone! Kris

Kris watch to see if the left rear foot nail start to wear faster the the others. Even before I notice the dazed and confused state in my little Jake I notices a different sound in the houseas he ran around, not 4 clicks as his little feet tapped the floor. The vet neuro ask about it and looked at his foot and sure enough the wear of nails was different.

Wow! Jake seems to be about 3/4's back to normal at this point.
He was asleep in his kennel this evening when we went out with friends for a couple of hours...so we closed and locked the door on the kennel so we would not wander around the house without us there. When we got home a couple of hours later, and pulled into the garage, my wife immediately noticed him barking which he hasn't done at all since this "episode" began on Wednesday. I ran into the house and he was just going berzerk in his kennel...it was like he sort of "snapped out of it" and realized he was locked in his kennel and was really upset about it. I unlocked the door and he bounced out wagging his tail furiously and licking me, something he also hasn't done since Wednesday. He literally BOUNCED and RAN around the kitchen (he was just sort of padding around the house aimlessly and seemed to barely be able to keep his balance for the last 3-4 days) and then he headed for the front door to be let out to do his business. He then proceeded to do his normal front yard patrol sniffing to see what other dogs had been by, etc. He was previously not interested in doing any of this. I say he is only 3/4's back to normal because he still wandered around the house sort of like he has been doing but at a much faster clip and not looking as "confused" as he has been...almost like he was really getting to know the house all over again. He only made about 3 circuits of the house and then laid down contentedly. Before, he would pace the house for hours upon hours making the exact same path through all the downstairs rooms. He is still reluctant to jump up on the couch with us...like he is still uncertain about jumping, his balance, or possibly gauging the effort involved. About 3 years ago he started getting a little stiff and I actually taught him to "back up and get a running start" in order to make it up on the couch or the bed. He obviously still remembers and understands that because he responded to my verbal command and hand motion for "backup and jump" but he wouldn't follow thru with the jump itself, instead deciding to just lay down in front of the couch. I am so thankful for all the good advice and the encouragement given by everyone on these threads. I am sure it all worked together to help get the little guy back from what seemed like the brink. Kris

That ends my evening in a great mood Kris.
Sometimes when our little doghters are sick, I wish they could talk to us. Then I remember our little Jack Russell. If she talked, she probably would never shut up! LOL! Thanks for the great news Kris. Tim
