Silicone Bakeware- Opinions??

Have any of you bakers ever used these products? I bake a lot during the holidays and wondering if these products are actually worth the money. I don't want to spend and be disappointed.

Thanks!!

you can buy a can of "food grade" silicone and spay your own sheets.... but BEWARE... that stuff is SLIPPERY.... if you do spray them, do it outside and put them on some newspaper to collect over spray. Don't even ask how I know.....LOL

OH, and BTW, you can also spray the inside of your CLEAN oven and it will be stress free to clean again..... BUT be careful when spraying not to get it on the floor, it is VERY slippery.

Is the brand name SmartWare?

If so don't waste your money.

I've got a few silicone items and dont like any of them. They're floppy and hard to work with, plus they're just as hard to clean as a regular pan.

I even have an oven mitt made of silicone and hate it.

JMHO...

I love silicon bake ware, for muffins, cupcakes, and small things. I am not so keen when baking larger cakes. It simple and easy to clean.

I have silicone finger mitts, and I use them all the time. I get annoyed when the kid borrow them to play puppets with them.

Healthwise, I wouldn't use them to bake with-I heard too many horror stories of how women with breast implants had them break open and poison them, what's the difference between eating it and having it in your blood stream? Some portion of it will naturally sluff off, even if it's microscopically, and be digested.

OTOH, it may be completely safe, but knowing what I do of our darlings at the FDA, I refuse to cook with it. Now, for soap molds, possibly it will be fine-I'll be trying that here in a few days as I've bought quite a bit of it on clearance for just that reason.

I don't use aluminum utensils and just got rid of all my plastic storage and dishes. The fiancee's mighty hard on china so I bought a cheap set of porcelain at Ross that he can chip and break to his heart's desire.

But silicone? I don't use it and none of my family does either.

Silicone muffin cups are the bomb.

When I work with silicone, my hands break out. That says something.

I use mostly cast iron, i get good things out if it like Iron, that my body likes, the silicone == bad things I don't want to put into my body, think about that.

I can buy these items for pennies on the dollar, but I hate them enough not to even buy them for gifts.

Try cast iron or commercial style bakeware.

I have only tried the bundt pan one because it will actually make a bundt cake that will fit under the clear glass cover of my Anchor Hocking fancy schmansie cake pedestal and it works quite well.

I was a bit hesitant at first in trying it because I thought it would flop cake batter all over the place but it didn't and I can pack it in my luggage easily when I'm in the middle of the Pacific for a month in the winter time. Gotta have my bakeware and I am a very avid cook. It was easy to butter up and flour before I poured the lemon blueberry cake batter in it. Yummy! V

I agree with Flippper. All my bake ware is either glass, stainless, or cast iron. I bought a couple of those silicone cupcake "pans", but have never used them. I like the idea of using them as soap or candle molds.

All my pans are either glass or steel or cast iron. OTOH, I LOVE the silicone spatulas. I have LOTS of them, big ones, little ones, regular size ones, long skinny ones...... I figure since I'm NOT cooking them with food, they are perfect to scrape stuff out of bowls or cans or the final cooked product out of a pan.

I couldnt figure out how someone could make a cake in a floppy silicone pan-it would be all mishapen.

cast iron

One can't have enough cast iron. A friend of mine did the research and said that is the best for you.
