That's the size of cut I've got in pay for the July-September time frame. Despite my agency's sequestration plan not including any furlough's, the Secretary of Defense has ordered the Deptartment of Defense to do 11 days of furlough during that time frame. Got the word last week (official press announcement). Not 100%, as agency management is trying to get an exemption. Checking to see if I can get a 6-month deployment to avoid, even if it means heading to middle east/north africa. If I get it, I bypass the furlough, and even make (up to) 25% more pay, with no federal tax. Wish me luck.

By the way, I've actually have wanted to do a deployment for some years, and have only recently gotten CINC-House to be good with the idea. At least I'm smart enough to not try for Afghanistan.

H2O that is one continent I have no desire visiting!

Just way too much suffering and death there that scares the hell out of me not to mention the bugs, reptiles, mammals and sub human species that want to kill or eat you.

Oh and I almost forgot about the diseases that make you bleed out of the orifices on your body and the one bug that you makes you crap apple juice out of a straw for a month before it kills you.

Can’t forget about the Muslim extremists there, what the hell am I saying all Muslims are extremists!

Just be careful and remember no sex with the natives, the Aides rate is staggering in all of Africa.

Good luck and keep us posted!

Huh?!
You are kidding me right?!

You want to go into deeper hot water with this government?
What do you expect from them?

Jesus--nevermind!

We're just plugging along.
I would say don't go to that awful area, but your choice of course.

And O is already planning another vacation. They are sending our tax dollars hand over fist to the middle east to so called help and this is what is happening to American's :(

I am in the same boat. That is a less than 5% cut for the year and we have known about it for months. I wouldnt go overseas now if I could avoid it. Dig into the reserve if you didnt stash any away in anticipation but try to stay home.

Bams and Mooch have a trip planned to 3 countries in Africa in June, including South Africa -- I forget the other two. Well, there's another 10 million down the toilet.

I thought the rule was eighteen months out of country before tax-free kicked in, with up to thirty days back home allowed, but nothing more. Had cousin who spent almost a decade in the Middle East working for ITT who did well for himself, but his family had to spend a lot of their vacation time I Europe instead of coming home to the States to remain tax-free.

I think DW would have ALOT to say about point 5. At least I'm not volunteering for Afghanistan.

Wildweasel:
As it will be still in a combat zone, no federal taxes while there. I expect to also work 8-12 hour days, 7 days a week. So no time to sight-see, not that I would want to in that area, at this time.
