RAF fighter jets have escorted a Pakistan International Airlines aircraft from Manchester Airport to Stansted Airport.

The airline has confirmed it is for security reasons. There are understood to be 297 passengers on board.

The plane was heading west towards Manchester when it was suddenly re-routed near York and headed back out to the North Sea, before travelling south to Stansted.

It is believed to have now landed at the airport.

An Essex Police spokeswoman said: "An incident has occurred on an aircraft. Police and partners are responding."

2 men arrested..

Jet fighter escorts plane into Stansted

An RAF Typhoon jet today escorted a passenger plane into Stansted Airport following an incident on board.

Two men were arrested at the airport on suspicion of endangerment of an aircraft, Essex Police said.

The Pakistan International Airlines plane was flying from Lahore, Pakistan, to Manchester when it was diverted to the Essex airport. It landed at approximately 2.20pm.

The incident is not thought to be terrorism-related at this stage, it is understood.

It is thought to have happened about 10 minutes before the plane, flight number PK709, was due to land in Manchester at 2pm.

An Essex Police spokesman said: “The plane has landed. We and our partner agencies are at the scene and dealing with the situation.”

An MoD spokesman said the incident was now a police matter and ``our involvement is over''.

He said Typhoon jets can be scrambled after the pilot or crew of a passenger aircraft sends out an emergency signal.

“The purpose of going up is to investigate what the situation is,” he said. “Often when a Quick Reaction Alert aircraft is launched the details are not known, but it is known that a signal has been sent.

“Part of the purpose of sending a Typhoon up is to have a look and see what they can see.”

The Ministry of Defence spokesman said: “A Typhoon aircraft has been launched to investigate an incident involving a civilian aircraft within UK airspace.”

He added that the Typhoon is from RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire.

The very same plane on the very same flight - from Lahore to Manchester - had been diverted to Stansted on September 7 2011 due to a bomb scare.

Today’s flight had left Lahore at 9.35am local time and was thought to have been carrying 297 passengers.

Two held after RAF Typhoon jets escort Pakistan plane over UK

The plane was diverted from Manchester to Stansted
Two men have been arrested after RAF Typhoon jets were launched to escort a passenger plane travelling from Pakistan to the UK, police have said.

Officers boarded Pakistan International Airlines flight PK709, which had been due to land at Manchester, after it was diverted to Stansted Airport.

Two men are being held on suspicion of endangerment of an aircraft, Essex Police said.

Stansted Airport said nobody on board had been hurt.

The plane reportedly left Lahore - the capital of the Pakistani province of Punjab - at 09:35 local time. It was due in at Manchester at 14:00 BST.

BBC defence correspondent Jonathan Beale said there was a suggestion there had been threats on board during the flight, involving some sort of weapon or bomb - although this was unconfirmed.

Emergency signal
However, one passenger told the BBC that the pilot told them there had been threats.

Stansted Airport said the pilot had alerted the authorities to the incident, but it did not say what that incident was. Nobody had been hurt, it said.

A spokesman for the airport said passengers were being taken off the plane.

"They will be taken to a reception centre in the airport where police may wish to interview them about what they have seen," he said.

"At some point police and the airline will arrange for their onward transportation to Manchester."

A Manchester Airport spokesman said: "A Pakistan International Airlines aircraft which was due to land at Manchester Airport at 13.30 BST today has been diverted to our sister airport London Stansted, where the authorities are investigating."

A Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) spokesman Zufiqar Bijarani told CNN: "We have been told there may have been a bomb threat." But he did not say if he had anything to confirm or deny this.

Stansted Airport said on Twitter that it was operating normally.

PIA said there were 308 passengers on board, as well as 14 crew including pilots, with a mixture of Pakistani and British passport holders.

'Serious incident'
The MoD said responsibility for the incident had passed to Essex Police and the Home Office.

An MoD spokesman said the incident was now a police matter and that "our involvement is over".

He said Typhoon jets could be scrambled after the pilot or crew of a passenger aircraft sends out an emergency signal.

"The purpose of going up is to investigate what the situation is," he said.

"Often when a Quick Reaction Alert aircraft is launched the details are not known, but it is known that a signal has been sent.

"Part of the purpose of sending a Typhoon up is to have a look and see what they can see."

Philip Baum, of Aviation Security International, told the BBC: "This is certainly a significant incident, however the fact that fighter jets were scrambled to intercept is not unusual.

"Fighter jets are scrambled when there is a bomb threat, when there is a hijack, when the wrong transponder code is used or if an aircraft cannot communicate with the ground. Often the result is when there is an unruly passenger on board.

"What is interesting in this case is that it would appear that the aircraft was only 10 minutes from landing - these are initial reports coming in - when they decided to divert to Stansted. So to actually change a destination 10 minutes from landing would certainly imply that there was some serious incident taking place."

Heathrow Airport runways closed after plane 'fire'

A British Airways (BA) plane had to return to Heathrow Airport to make an emergency landing after black smoke was seen coming from an engine.

Both runways were closed as passengers and crew used emergency chutes.

BA said the Heathrow to Oslo service turned back after a technical fault at 08:43 BST. Witnesses reported seeing flames coming from the engine.

The southern and northern runways have since reopened but BA have cancelled all short haul flights until 16:00 BST.

Emergency services were standing by while the plane was evacuated.

London Ambulance Service said three people had been treated for minor injuries.

BA said the Airbus A319 was carrying 75 passengers and a "full investigation" would be conducted into the incident.

The Metropolitan Police attended the emergency and tweeted: "Police at Heathrow assisted in the response to the emergency landing. It is not being treated as a terrorist incident at this time."

David Gallagher, a passenger on the plane, said: "About eight or nine minutes into the flight there was a loud popping sound, not an explosion but definitely not usual sounds.

"The captain came on very calmly, said he was aware of the situation and that everything was running normally and he was going to run some tests to see what the right course would be.

"Then another five minutes after that there was a loud sound, and this time the right engine was clearly on fire.

"I mean, big flames, very visible from the rest of the cabin and lots of black smoke".

He added that a few passengers were upset "especially those on the right side of the plane" but the cabin and ground crews were "outstanding and completely calm".

Footage filmed from on board the plane shows the emergency landing
Witness John Coghlan told the BBC he saw a "black smoke trail" from the engine of a British Airways Airbus A319.

He said: "[It was a] safe landing and passengers evacuated by chutes on runway."

Jez Stamp, from Farnham in Surrey, who was on a plane waiting to take off to Jordan, said: "I could see smoke on the right engine.

"We just saw it come to a halt and fire engines were already there waiting for it and they immediately started hosing the plane down."

Earlier, London Fire Brigade tweeted: "One crew from Heathrow fire station is assisting Heathrow Airport's fire service with an aircraft fire.

"We believe the fire is now out."

Explosion fears
Rob Brownell, 33, saw the plane from Imperial Wharf Station in central London and told the BBC flames were "clearly visible".

He said: "There was this almighty rumbling overhead - I looked up and saw the plane on fire. There were flames coming not just from the engine but lapping the wing.

"My initial thought was 'my God this thing is going to blow up'. The wings are full of fuel so I couldn't see how there could not be an explosion.

"It left a black smoke trail in the sky and there was a smell of aviation fuel afterwards."

BA plane makes emergency landing at Heathrow after fire

(Reuters) - British Airways said on Friday a plane travelling from London to Oslo was forced to make an emergency landing after a fault in one of the engines.

Video footage on Sky News showed the plane at London's Heathrow's airport with smoke bellowing out of its right engine.

"It's right engine was on fire. This plane was coming over and suddenly the tone of the engine changed dramatically. I'd almost say it was like a blowout or an explosion," witness Clive Cook told Sky News.

The airport, Europe's busiest, closed both its runways to deal with the incident, but one has since been re-opened.

A spokesman for the London fire brigade, which attended the incident, said they believed the fire was now out.

"There has been an incident involving a BA aircraft at Heathrow airport this morning and both runways have been closed as a result," a spokeswoman for the airport said. "All passengers have been safely evacuated from the plane in question."

Another passenger, Umari Nauman, told Sky News cabin crew had said two men had repeatedly tried to get into the cockpit.

"The cabin crew informed us that basically they tried to come into the cockpit a few times and because they had been asked not to do that, they got into a bit of an argument with the crew and made a few threats."

Stansted said the pilot had alerted the authorities to the incident, but the airport did not say what that incident was.

Speaking about the passengers, an airport spokesman said: "They will be taken to a reception centre in the airport where police may wish to interview them about what they have seen. At some point police and the airline will arrange for their onward transportation to Manchester."

Two Britons grilled over Pakistan plane scare

Posted by Kanchana Devi on May 25, 2013 in Exclusive, News, World · 0 Comments

London, May 25 (TruthDive): Two British nationals were arrested and questioned on suspicion of threatening an aircraft. The two men, aged 30 and 41, were led off the Pakistan International Airlines Boeing 777 by armed police officers after it was diverted yesterday en route to a scheduled landing at Manchester Airport following a disturbance in the cabin.

The PK709 flight from Lahore in Pakistan had 297 passengers on board, but was diverted shortly before arrival. The plane was scheduled to leave Lahore – the capital of the Pakistani province of Punjab – at 09:35 local time (05:35 BST) on Friday and had been due to arrive in Manchester at 13:30 BST.

PIA Flight sent out a signal particularly meant for on-flight emergency, 10 minutes before it was to land at Manchester. The incident, has happened just two days after a British soldier was cruelly killed in Woolwich in a suspected terror attack and the incident was alarming enough for authorities to scramble RAF Typhoon jets to divert the PIA Boeing 777.

The two British nationals aged 30 and 41, claimed they had a bomb. They were arrested on suspicion of endangering an aircraft by armed police. A security source said that initial indications were that the plane was not the target of a terrorist attack.

A spokesman for Pakistan International Airlines, Mashood Dajwar said the incident arose when the two passengers in suspicion threatened a flight attendant. They communicated the threat to the pilot, who passed on the concern to air traffic control in Manchester.

Dajwar said he could not elaborate on the nature of the alleged threat but said the two men later said they were only making a joke.

Police later released the plane and the passengers were flown to Manchester. A spokesperson from the airport said passengers were leaving the plane and no one was hurt in the incident.

UK plane alert: Pair in court on endangering aircraft charge

Two men have been appeared in court accused of endangering an aircraft.

Tayyab Subhani, 30, and Mohammed Safdar, 41, both of Nelson in Lancashire, were detained at Stansted on Friday after a flight was diverted there.

They allegedly threatened that "crew and passengers would be killed and the aircraft blown up before landing which was false, misleading or deceptive".

Chelmsford Magistrates' Court remanded them in custody until 5 August.

Mr Subhani, a taxi driver, and Mr Safdar, a restaurant worker, spoke only to confirm their names and addresses.

Lawyers for the men said it was their intention to plead not guilty.

The pair were arrested on Friday at Stansted Airport after Pakistan International Airways flight PK709 from Lahore was diverted from Manchester.

They were travelling home after attending Mr Safdar's mother's funeral, the court heard.

The Boeing 777 plane, carrying 308 passengers, was shadowed into Stansted by an RAF Typhoon fighter jet after the pilot reported threats being made and landed at the Essex air hub.

Magistrate Sarah-Jane Davies refused an application to grant the men bail.

They will next appear at Chelmsford Crown Court for a plea and case management hearing.
