Yeah. We keep getting loaded with these escapees from California (including illegal beaners and tweakers). We consider them to be both arrogant and ignorant. They get into a small rural locale and start pushing for sidewalks and streetlights and public transportation and services, and complaining about the smell of cow shit and the noise of tractors and harvesting machines and chainsaws. And whining about the "limitations" of the local inhabitants who just don't see things the California way. They drive on two-lane rural roads as if they were out on the freeway, recklessly endangering people and animals. I've lived in many states and several foreign countries, and never have I seen people despised as much as are Californians here in SW Oregon. Not to mention the damage they've done to the state and its lifestyle by congregating in the several northern OR cities and outvoting us rural folks on matters about which they have no understanding or knowledge. Arghhhh!!!!

Josephine County Sheriff Gilbertson is a very good man and a strong constitutionalist. Our problem is two things;

1. Corrupt County government which, when faced with severe budget shortfall, cut the Sheriff's Office to the bone and not other things - like their own salaries, perks, cars, office staff, etc.

2. The O and C money from the gov that was cut is this: The fedgov "owns" more than 70% of Josepehine County. They used to kick back SOME of the money they made from selling logging rights, bascially in lieu of property taxes. Now they don't. So more than 70% of the land here is fedgov and no one can touch it or do anything with it. National Forest was not meant originally to be permanently "owned" by the fedgov, just held for a while until the new states took care of it. Many western states have this same very bad problem.

Maybe the county should start charging them property taxes then! If they fail to pay......then auction off the land to the highest bidder.

Yeah. My few limited conversations with Sheriff Gilbertson have evidenced him to be a pretty straight guy, sticking up for the citizens in his jurisdiction and opposing federal intrusions on citizens' liberties.. What the city council is doing is the typical scare tactic of scumbag politicians: cutting the most essential services to scare the taxpayers into approving additional taxes, which will just buy them more bennies and votes.
