Suggestions here have been good (well, except for the fresh dog poop).
If I were in your shoes, I'd just work some grass clippings and a tablespoon of the fertilizer you already have into the upper inch or so of the soil around each plant, then mulch good with a couple of inches of grass clippings and water in. Soon the 'mater plants will be so big you won't need to worry. Then every couple of weeks, make a weak mixture (1-2 TBSP.) of your fertilizer in a couple of gallons of water. Pour this on the soil, not on the plants. Mulching with more clippings is always good.
