Water is coming back on line. Just a few people still missing. 4 of the deaths were in OK City, the rest in Moore. They're going over the area for a third time today, and hopefully will be able to locate anyone else who needs rescuing. Tremendous response from all over the area. People who are not actual homeowners need to stay out of the area, they are causing traffic and other problems. Opening up the fairgrounds to be able to take livestock and pets there.

A few comments on structural lessons learned so far:

So Gyms are bad places, long clear spans.
Hallways are better because of shorter spans, but create very long sails in the wind (I think the term yesterday was pancake).
Add some curves and jogs to break up the pattern and create shorter spans (parallel to the direction of the hallway).
Tie metal/graphite rebar into the walls and not just 90 degree intersections.
Corners provide a chance for structural bracing.

Good techniques in hurricanes, tornadoes, and earthquakes.

thus why those of us involved in feeding and Mass care LOVED to see Guard guys....Honest...close it down except for folks with legit reasons for being there (there are enough who are trying to salvage even a few pitiful SCRAPS of their lives that they don't need looky-loos meandering about...Those folks trying to salvage scraps do enough shell-shocked wandering that they could be dangers to themselves and rubberneckers. I have VERY LITTLE PATIENCE with folks who are indulging in their schadenfreude sense in times like this...Yepper I could be described as a jackboot supporter as they try to secure the area for the residents.)

That's right up there with asking for numbers at this point....Da boss won't have numbers until at LEAST a few hours after the local IC boss has them, even if the lines of communication are open....

Heck, unless the metrics have changed, it will take 72 hours AT LEAST to get a BALLPARK ESTIMATE of the damage (in terms of units... res, bus, school/public, etc) and and another 72 to get a SOLID estimate.... The metrics I worked under for PDA and SDA were PDA 48 hours, SDA 96 but I BELIEVE they are now 72 and 72...

PDA= Preliminary Damage Assessment (windshield surveys of the affected areas, drawing out on maps which streets were affected, windshield counts of units by type and by damage qualifications, all tabulated and collated by the 48 hour point. The PDA gives a ballpark on how much total assistance is LIKELY to be needed (to the nearest hundred thou or thereabouts)

SDA=Survey Damage Assessment walking assessment by address with names and # of people per address, type of building and damage qualification, etc. THOSE "Street Sheets" are the basis for assistance... we interviewed ANYONE in the area, trying to gain names etc so that residents can get the assistance they need...and non-residents can go whistle....

ND,

The supposed "death tolls" during Moore, OK and West, TX were a complete debacle and bordered on irresponsibilty on all parties involved due to the uneeded stress they created amongst survivors and the general public.

Your points are all well made ND.

I learned during my career in manufacturing that one of the hardest things for any person to say is "I don't know."

About half the newsies I worked with in Level 1 and 2 disasters (under 100K total assistance...by ARC standards 10-15 yrs ago) were pretty darn good and understanding. The OTHER half, well, not so much. Once in a while I had to remind some of them the ground rules and, on more than one occasion I got to the unprintable stage with a couple of them.

And, as you say, it is INCREDIBLY difficult to plead ignorance when the klieg lights go on and the unblinking eye points right at YOU and YOUR name tag...I have had to rein in public "officials" as they waxed hyperbolic....because they couldn't bring themselves to say "We really don't have firm numbers at this point."

Now. This is NOT to say that folks who have experience in dealing with certain types of events won't have formed an informed opinion on where the toll thermometer should stop rising....

Most of western NY state is under a tornado watch now until 9 pm tonight. Not really worried- the worst we've ever seen was 3 years ago; an F2 took out almost every mature tree in the small town 4 miles from us, but didn't cause any direct damage to our farm. I did lost most of my vegetable garden due to the power being out for 18 hours- the blasted beef cows figured out that the fences were dead and had a party. Sigh...

It does feel like tornado weather here- it's 88° and humid, and there are thunderheads building on the western horizon.

Believe it or not about three weeks ago during a warm spell WE were under tornado watch here in middle Ireland! Husband thought I was joking when I went and told him that, he was working in the garden and since tornadoes are really rare here (though one did take off a roof in the next village over a few years ago) I just told him that the watch was real, it was not a warning but if saw the usual signs (he spent his teenage years in Texas) just come inside and get under the stairs or our pantry (mostly underground) room.

I'm all about the doom
Well, we surivived yesterday and last night! Had the NOAA radio going off every 10 minutes, it seemed, had the county emergency mananger doing their automated phone calls, and family/friends calling/texting all evening. It looked scary, but all it did here was rain real good and the wind blew a little (I have seen it blow much harder) maybe 40 mph. The Lord answered prayers. Today's storm was worse than the tornado warnings and storms we got yesterday - rained harder and the winds blew harder. Of course, I am talking about my actual location and I don't mean to take anything away from the areas that were hard hit or be flippant.

Update: National Weather Service confirms tornado that hit Moore, Okla., was a top-of-the-scale EF-5 - @AP

8 mins ago by editor

What struck me is how NOTHING was able to withstand the direct impact of the storm...not steel I-beams, not bricks, not cement blocks - NOTHING...all was smashed, twisted and jumbled up in heaps.
Hopefully folks will now graphically understand that taking shelter in a vehicle is NOT a good idea.

No one can look at those pix without "losing it".

Hope all those to the East of that area heed the warnings when & if they're told to take shelter from new storms.

MOORE, Okla. (AP) — The National Weather Service says the tornado that hit Moore, Okla., was a top-of-the-scale EF-5 twister with winds of at least 200 mph.

Spokeswoman Keli Pirtle said Tuesday the agency upgraded the tornado from an EF-4 on the enhanced Fujita scale to an EF-5 based on what a damage assessment team saw on the ground. The weather service uses the word "incredible" to describe the power of EF-5 storms.

The weather service says the tornado's path was 17 miles long and 1.3 miles wide.

Pirtle says Monday's twister is the first EF-5 tornado of 2013.

Now would be the time to go back and reread the accounts given to the us army by the native americans inhabiting the plains way back when, when they described tornadoes of such horrific scale to the army personnel looking at setting up shop in that area thought the NA's were nutz. Early pioneers have some tall tales as well, and this is exactly how they are viewed by modern day scientists and meterologists, they are regarded as tall tales... poo poo'd as it couldn't have been that bad, or was it? One no longer sees the trees growing bent out here on the plains due to incessent high winds, why? What changed? Has that climate cycle now returned? If so what should we expect? Myself am thinking we should expect an ice age.

Looks like the interglacial global warming period has come to an abrubt end and the weather our ancestors saw, and sometimes survived, has returned... As Melodi said in another thread here it looks as if the Maunder Medium Glacial period has returned.

Synopsis, we will continue to not only see tornadoes of this scale here in the plains states, but even stronger!

I read somewhere that Ireland uses an abbreviated "F-Scale" to rate tornadoes?

F-1 = Fekken Wee Little Spinner

F-3 = Fekken Bothersome

F-5 = Fekken Huge
