Thankfully one of my sisters did the archiving gig for the family ten years ago. Lots of mistakes but you don't hear me complaining [I guess you do,but she doesn't]. No more "On the road" reports? Ah well, your priorities seem to be in order. Best of everything to you all.

Well, Troke, I hate to see it, but I hope the work will be fulfilling and valuable to your Heirs.

Your posts were usually worth the read, that's for sure.

Best to you and hope you find the time occasionally to drop in.

Troke, though your "status quo" political threads in recent years drove me crazy, the rest of your posts, as well as your insights, will certainly be missed by myself as well as many others. Do what you have to. Drop by when you want to.

Take care

We're just plugging along.
I to will miss your informative posts. Hope you get a break once and in a while and come over here. You have some job ahead of you.

We also have some of those pictures from the 1800's and early 1900's with nothing on the back :(.

We went to visit some cousins (found them through genealogy) in Kansas and they had some really old photos and some that had no identification.......my DH looked at one of a big family and said "that is me there in my dad's arms".........one more photo identified with all the family in a visit in 1942.

God Bless you and your family. It is a difficult task that you have set for yourself. We have been through the same just this past week. More needs to be done and we will do our best. Take good care and let us know how things go when you can.

I took on a very similar project for my family. Scanning hundreds of photographs left to me by my grandparents. Gathering all the family info into one place and putting it in digital format. It's a big job...but quite rewarding!

If you too are beginning to gather your family's genealogy, there is a free software program called PAF (Personal Ancestral File). You can download it here: https://familysearch.org/products#paf-promo

And here's a helpful website put up by the Mormons, who excel in genealogy record gathering... https://familysearch.org/family-trees

I'm going to miss your input on this forum Troke...your voice was one that I respected... ~

gotta hand it to ya troke,

I know a lot of people (including me) who wished their parents would have done just half of what you are doing, with history of things, power of attorney, trusts, ect all that stuff, , most of us, ended up having to dig through things(one person had to go through every piece of clothing since his mom, would only leave clues where certain things were, jewelry ect), and piece things together, after losing everything due to parents going in nursing home and everything having to be liquidated ect,

as to moving on, theres a time for everything, your perspective on things made a lot of us think, and sometimes wonder, but sometimes what you said, didn't make sense till long after said, , with that said, take care, drop by and still say hi, from time to time

You doing just fine, Tracing the family linage back that far may not seem that important to some of the younger in your family, you may want to attach notes to some things.
It was not until my grandmother passed this past year in September that I found the resting place of one of our great grandfathers and with him a family that go's back to the 1830s on my fathers-mothers side. We're still doing research.

Thanks for the memories Troke. Go with God.

My mother's father did the family history on her side and we all got a copy. My Dad did his side and I did a giant set of family trees - part of which goes back to the 1400s. It's the stuff I have to sort out. Am doing that a little at a time. Id'ing people on the back of photos, writing on tags that this came from great grandma such and so.....

Wow, this is a timely Bump! We are moving into retirement and are emptying the homestead. I have a dumpster filled with family "stuff." I tried to scan and save a number of photos but the kids weren't interested, genealogy is done. I tried.

If anyone has "family stuff" that is not needed, you might try a local Family History Center of the LDS Church (genealogy library) or local museum, depending on what kind of info you have and ask if they would be interested in your donation. If it is very specific to your family and not a lot of it - mainly dates and no photos, you could get on one of the genealogy sites on the internet (Rootsweb, Ancestry.com - lots of them) and go to the search feature for specific names. Many people are looking just for YOUR specific info.......it might just fill in the blanks that many of us addicts have been searching for.

Please don't dumpster it just yet - you might just connect with cousins by marriage and enjoy a new relationship, or there may be one grandchild who will say, 10 years down the road........."I wish I had known my grandpa and how he lived, because I look like him". My grandchildren love looking at the old photos (taken in late 1800s) of their ancestors and cannot imagine wearing long dresses and carrying bibles for the photos LOL.......they hang on the den wall and seem to be more appreciated as the kids get older.

I've always liked Troke. We've net IRL several times. I found him to be a kind, intelligent and caring man. I've always valued his thoughts on various issues of the day. None of that has changed, nor will it ever.

But I find his politics these days to be absolute head-in-the-sand moronic. His "status quo always vote republican" position is naive to the point of insanity. Though I understand why he feels as he does (as a grandfather, he's desperately trying to "save" the country for s grandchildren), he's incapable of realizing that his brand of politics is what has destroyed the country.

He doesn't get it. He will never get it. He's pathologically UNABLE to get it. He's a political warrior from the 40's and 50's. unfortunately, we no longer live in those times, and no longer have politicians who follow the law or Constitution. He doesn't understand or believe that. And there are millions like him. And until that generation either wises up or dies off, we can never (peacefully) reclaim this country.

I love ya Troke. Just not your politics.
