Venezuela hopes to wipe out toilet paper shortage by importing 50m rolls

Minister blames shortage on 'excessive demand caused by media campaign generated to disrupt the country'

First milk, butter, coffee and cornmeal ran short. Now Venezuela is running out of the most basic of necessities – toilet paper.

Blaming political opponents for the shortfall, as it does for other shortages, the government says it will import 50m rolls to boost supplies.

That was little comfort to consumers struggling to find toilet paper on Wednesday.

"This is the last straw," said Manuel Fagundes, a shopper hunting for tissue in Caracas. "I'm 71 years old and this is the first time I've seen this."

One supermarket visited by the Associated Press in the capital on Wednesday was out of toilet paper. Another had just received a fresh batch, and it quickly filled up with shoppers as the word spread.

"I've been looking for it for two weeks," said Cristina Ramos. "I was told that they had some here and now I'm in line."

Economists say Venezuela's shortages stem from price controls meant to make basic goods available to the poorest parts of society and the government's controls on foreign currency.

"State-controlled prices – prices that are set below market-clearing price – always result in shortages. The shortage problem will only get worse, as it did over the years in the Soviet Union," said Steve Hanke, professor of economics at Johns Hopkins University......

I just bought more yesterday.

Stuff like this is why we prep. So we don't have to run around and stand in line everytime they decide to create a shortage of one thing or another.

I've been prepping toilet paper for a number of years. Even though we lost most of our stuff in Katrina, 90 rolls of TP was on a high shelf, not so a good supply of paper towels though. But I was so happy to see that the toilet paper had survived. I have a good two year supply now.

I give up.
One thing though -- if you DO get caught without TP, you can always use old washcloths and then throw them in a diluted bleach bucket and launder. I don't recommend being without scraps of usable cloth on top of having extra TP. You just never know these days.......

Even better is to buy the large plastic box of baby wipes. There are several hundred in a box. Takes very little storage space, much less than tp.

Great idea. You can't flush them though, can you? You'd have to toss them in a separate trash bag or something?

You can always ask our own The Mountain how they do it in India. The Left hand and water. I have stocked up a lot of toilet paper. I means drums, from Sam's Club.

That is really crappy. :D

We have a couple of months supply but that's only because my wife uses way more than she should. She can go through a double roll in a day under normal circumstances. I think I'm just going to allocate the $15 for the 72 double rolls every time I go to the store now. Gonna have to start putting it in the attic.

2 things I would really miss in an extended period of SHTF, hot showers and TP, at least I can prep for TP. Hot showers will probably come out of a solar camping setup that I have not yet purchased but there is no comparison to a real hot shower from a water heater. With any luck the natural gas will keep flowing, heh.

I'm sorry you think you can wipe your ass with gold. Try a nice one dollar bill instead, more useful in that way and much more practical. Not to mention that the Gov tell us a Dollar is a good as gold.

But, just try to imagine where that dollar may have been.

No suprise as Chavez left that country as a pile of shit.

The poster from Venezuela on one of my other boards says that much more than TP is out or running low. People are spending hours in lines trying to get basic stuff. He's the one people said for him to stay indoors after Chavez croaked (he'd been in a car accident), so he didn't get hurt with crazy peeps running around. Yup. Read and believe. He's living it.

I found out that the hard way. 150$ to roto rooter. Better have a supply of bags also.
Costco has moist Flushable Wipes 10 packs of 60 (600 total) for 14.99, occasionally has a special and they're 11.99. They are nice to have sometimes

This is official notice to anyone from Venezuela. I will trade some of my toilet paper stashed in the bunker for physical gold. PM me if interested. US Dollars do not count.

I saw some at Wallyworld that I might have considered (like 12 for $3.99 or something), but they were SO cheap and thin, I thought they would HURT if you tried to use them for TP, so I didn't buy them. Cripe. I just save my old fluffy ones that have outgrown their usefulness.

At least two I know of can be flushed...Preparation H wipes (in the yellow package with a plastic snap lid, and...WetOnes Fresh and Flush in a greyish plastic box. The Prep H product is a little pricey while the WetOnes are about 2.75 for a box of 52.

Still have 150 rolls of TP in the stash though.
