ECON Low Cost Broadband Internet for the Needy

I personally don't like government mandated handouts, but since they exist and are part of America, I do feel a personal need to share the information.

If you or someone you know have a child that is enrolled in the "Federal Free School Lunch Program", there is program that many cable companies are involved with called Connect2Compete that you may be able to get cheap broadband from.

You have to go to their site at http://www.connect2compete.org to see if its available in your area and for requirements.

Also, if you are in a CenturyLink service area and receive almost ANY type of government assistance, you can get low cost internet from them. Their program website is http://www.centurylink.com/home/internetbasics/

I am not affiliated in any way with any of these things.

Another bit of information.

If you are unemployed, most major ISP's have reduced cost programs to help you keep some sort of internet connection for a period of time.

It doesn't hurt to call and ask. Just be honest because they do check and usually prosecute fraud.

There was a program around here a couple of years ago that if you had no access to broadband in a rural area that you could get hughesnet at a discount with free installation. I took advantage of it, I don't think there was really an income level required, just no access.

Our library restricts usage to 15 minutes per person and it takes me 30 minutes to even get to the library! But yes it is free there.

Yes, taxpayer funded.
In my area, if you are on government assistance, You get the 25mb connection for $10/mo or you can get the 3mb connection for free. (Cable internet)

I did some research and this is the only sattelite provider I could find that does this: http://www.recoveryactinternet.net/ - WildBlue Internet. Still very expensive, but for rural setups it is cheaper than regular price.

There are also many companies that are NOT on the government teet that offer low cost or free dial up internet, and some very limited broadband plans. http://www.netzero.com is one that offers both.

So in addition to an Obama phone with their food stamps they also get free internet??
And nobody has a problem with that???

Why don't they throw in a free I-pad? After all it's those rich tax payers who will pay for it.
Hell, well they're at it, they should throw in one of those electric cars they cant sell.

is there ANYTHING that will not be subsidized or provided for free to those claiming themselves to be "poor"?
