How Can I Remove Dry Erase Marker From Clothing

Anyone have suggestions on how to remove Dry Erase Marker from a cotton top? It is brightly colored cotton pique, so I can’t use bleach.

We won’t discuss the fact that I can’t seem to give a presentation without knocking over the dry erase board, getting the blue dry erase marker on my top. :eye:

I tried Shout already, but that did not even make a dent in the stain.

It sounds like this stuff is best kept OFF clothing in the first place... boy, I didn't realize they were quite so nasty!!

Blackboards have been replaced in many schools with dry erase boards, which means that parents now have to handle the difficult task of removing dry erase marker stains from clothing. Traditional methods of stain removal don’t work well in removing dry erase marker stains. In fact, these methods may only make the stain worse. Before you throw away your child’s favorite shirt, there are a few things you can try to remove that stain and save the shirt

Step 1
Try using rubbing alcohol to remove the stain. Test the rubbing alcohol on an inconspicuous section of the fabric first to ensure that it does not damage the fabric. Put a small amount of rubbing alcohol on a washcloth and gently blot the stain. Every time you pour out fresh rubbing alcohol, use a new, clean section of the washcloth. Launder as usual once the stain has been removed.
Step 2
Put Murphy Oil Soap on the stain if rubbing alcohol does not work. Place the item of clothing on a clean towel and gently dab the fabric with a washcloth soaked in Murphy Oil Soap.
Step 3
Use a brush or scraper to remove stubborn spots. Blotting may not be enough to remove the stain completely. If you are working with a fairly strong fabric, try brushing or scraping the stain to remove the last bits of dry erase marker. Move the towel under the fabric so that you are always removing the stain on a clean section of the towel.

Step 4
Apply Dawn dishwashing detergent to a clean, damp sponge after you have used Murphy Oil Soap. Rub any remaining spots with the sponge, rinsing the sponge frequently. Launder the item as usual.
Step 5
Check that the stain has been completely removed before you place the item in the dryer. If the stain is still present, don’t place the item in the dryer. The heat of the dryer will set the stain, making it much more difficult to remove. If the stain hasn’t been completely removed after washing, treat it again using either the rubbing alcohol or Murphy Oil Soap method.

There is a special "dry erase marker solvent" you can buy. It's expensive and hard to find, but if it's an expensive top, it might be worth it. Other than that, I haven't found anything to get standard dry erase marker out of clothing. Not even oxyclean, which gets just about everything out.

There are new dry erase markers, marketed as washable. They've also come out with dry erase crayons, which is the only thing I let my kids use in the house, now.

Thanks everyone!

I tried the rubbing alcohol, hand sanitizer, Murphy’s Oil Soap and Dawn since I already had all those on hand. None of them worked - but to be fair, it had already been through the dryer, so that probably set the stain.

I did not try dry erase marker solvent, since like Kayak said, it is expensive and this was a very inexpensive top. The top has now been sentenced to the rag bag.

Moral of the story …. stay away from dry erase boards.

I don't know if it will work for your problem or not but when I have a stubborn stain I use Soft Scrub. It gets stains out of colored table cloths without fading the color.
