URGENT: 1,000 Chinese boats to arrive in waters near Senkakus Mon.: report

BEIJING, Sept. 17, Kyodo

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Japan is an ally of the U.S. If war breaks out between China an Japan, what will the U.S. do? Will they defend their long time ally, or will they let them go their own way, and be devoured by the Chinese?

The other question is, does Japan have nukes ? I know for a fact that the Japanese have Plutonium. As far as a standing army, I don't believe that it is very big.....I could be wrong here. Therefore, if they don't have a large standing army, I'm surmising that Japan more than likely would use their alliance with the U.S. to defend themselves, OR if they are cut loose from the U.S. alliance, I'm guessing that they could manufacture a nuke in short order. If those two options become invalid, then the Japanese would have to give in to China's demands.

If war breaks out between Japan and China, we can count on war breaking out within other areas, worldwide.

Here's another bone of contention....the S. China Sea

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spratly_Islands_dispute

The Spratly Islands dispute is a territorial dispute over the ownership of the Spratly Islands, a group of islands located in the South China Sea. States staking claims to various islands are: Brunei, China (People's Republic of China), Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan (Republic of China), and Vietnam. All except Brunei occupy some of the islands.

The Spratly Islands are important for a number of reasons: the Spratly area holds significant reserves of oil and natural gas, it is a productive area for world fishing and commercial shipping, and coastal countries would get an extended continental shelf. But some states, like China (PRC), Taiwan (ROC), and Vietnam make claims based on historical sovereignty over the islands.

Watch carefully the nation of Vietnam. They may be a key player when war breaks out.

this poster (who likes to shout) from another forum says this,

CHINA SEIZES THE DISPUTED REGION, USA UNDERESTIMATES CHINESE RESOLVE, USA INCREASES COVERT ATTACKS AGAINST SYRIA AND MAKES A MOVE TO SHOW FORCE AGAINST CHINA, N. KOREA ATTACKS US FORCES IN REGION... US RESPONDS, CHINA INVADES TAIWAN, RUSSIA COMES OUT OF NO WHERE AND MOVES THROUGH GEORGIA AND AZERBAIJAN AND BEGINS TO AMASS A FORCE FOR IRAN AND SYRIA'S PROTECTION..... IRAQ ANNOUNCES ALLIANCE WITH RUSSIA AND IRAN (BOTH SHIA DOMINATED) SOUTH KOREA emits(I had to change the word) BLUE BRICKS, NORTH KOREA THREATENS TO DESTROY SOUTH IF USA ATTACKS AGAIN... AND ALL OF THE SUDDEN...

You WILL notice that Russia is strangely silent, considering all that's happening in the world. Remember, silence is always an answer.(unfortunately, with Russia, I haven't quite figured out as to why they are silent...unless they are planning something, and wish to keep a low profile)

Senkaku is a dilemma for China. If Japan exerts control there, the line from Japan through Okinawa to Senkaku becomes Japanese territorial waters. That is a long stretch. On China's agenda is the takeover of Taiwan. If they had Taiwan, their argument would be stronger.... so you can bet they have regrewts about not venturing to grab Taiwan. The small land masses are not the issue. What counts is who owns the territorial waters.

The Mideast and Russia's Master Plan

We have found an outstanding commentary by Don McAlvany that ties together many of the themes mentioned in Our Lady of the Roses message. We will show how McAlvany's conclusions, and Our Lady's message, are in agreement.

Russia's continuing orchestration of the global terrorist network
commentary by Don McAlvany

In the late '80s and early '90s, the Communist leaders in Moscow, following Lenin's dictum that "we advance through retreat," feigned the collapse of Communism in order to get the West (especially America) to lower its guard via disarmament and to send in massive high tech economic and financial aid (which we did for a decade).

"Do not be deceived. Their father is the father of all liars: satan. Their master plan is in motion. Pray for the light. Minds are clouded. I repeat: it is a ruse. Wake up America or you will suffer much." - Our Lady, December 18, 1991

"For it is their plan to subdue you, once they get the billions that they need in aid, to bring up the economy and buy more armaments. They have not disposed of their armaments, My child and My children. They store them in other nations. They have the same goals as their forefathers.” - Our Lady, June 18, 1992

Golitsyn (and other long-time students of global Communism - this writer included) has long written that Russia and its two intelligence services (KGB and GRU - military intelligence) have been directing and orchestrating the global terrorist network (including the PLO and other Islamic terror groups) for over 30 years.

Part of the Russia strategy (a major part) is to trigger a war between America (and its Western allies) and Islam, with the sinister purpose of all "moderate Arab (or Islamic) governments being overthrown and replaced with radical, anti-American fundamentalist regimes closely aligned with Russia, China, and the rest of the Communist bloc of nations. Targeted for overthrow are the governments of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and the Gulf states, Pakistan, Egypt, etc., and the radicalization of all Moslem governments in the Middle East and elsewhere.

Veronica - Our Lady now is looking down sadly. And I see She's pointing now to what looks like a map. Oh, my!
Now as I am watching—it's a map of... oh, I can see Jerusalem, and Egypt, Arabia, French Morocco, Africa. Oh, my goodness! There seems to be a very dense darkness now settling upon those countries. Oh, my! And Our Lady is saying:
Our Lady - "The start of the Third World War, My child." - March 29, 1975

This Russian (or Soviet) strategy involves drawing America into a no-win war--a Middle East quicksand bog that they believe will be 10 times worse than our Vietnam debacle or Russia's and England's defeats in Afghanistan. The Russian strategy, according to Golitsyn and this writer's good friend, Christopher Story (the brilliant British intelligence writer and financial analyst who published Golitsyn's two books) is to trigger a global Islamic Holy War or Jihad against America.

Veronica - And I can see now Jesus and Our Lady are going high up into the sky, and there's forming directly over Our Lady's statue, high in the sky—it is a cross, a very large cross. The handle, though, of a . . . dagger—it looks like a dagger, a knife. It's a strange-looking dagger with a loop at the bottom, like. It's a symbol. And Jesus is nodding.
Jesus - "You will understand, My child, soon."
Veronica - Yes, it is a, like a saber. Gee, it, it's a very strange-looking, dagger-like saber, with a cross on a handle. Like—it's not the kind that you see—it looks almost like Arabian or something. I can't explain it—like a very strange-looking Arabic, or something. I don't know where I have seen that before, but it's a very odd-looking type of dagger-like sword, with a hook on the end of it, though. That's strange. Oh, now it's beginning to fade; I can't see it anymore. - December 24, 1979

Chris Story believes there is strong and growing evidence that Russia may have plotted, planned and orchestrated the September 11 attack on America (from behind the scenes - even as they now feign support for us in our war against terrorism). Of course Iraq, Iran, Syria and other radical Islamic states were heavily involved, including substantial indirect help (financial, passports, etc.) from Saudi Arabia - "our ally."

But Story contends that the same people who orchestrated the global terror network for the past 35 years (i.e. the Russians) are still orchestrating it and that Osama bin Laden and the Taliban, while certainly players in the September 11 (and following) events, are not the key or dominant players. Furthermore, the primary goal of the perpetrators was not just the death, destruction and terror at the WTC and Pentagon, but rather the collapse of the very fragile U.S. financial system (followed by the collapse of the global financial system).

Our Lady - "My child and My children, the days will grow darker, and there will be hunger in your land. Yes, My child, what I brought you here for this evening is to tell the world that there will be a crash in the monetary doings of your government - an absolute crash that will affect every man, woman, and child in the United States and Canada, and then, like a serpent, creep all over Europe, until the world sees one big, massive depression. - September 7, 1985

The Communist revolution always advances in the midst of chaos.

Chris Story, former U.S. Defense Department analyst Joe Douglass (author of Red Cocaine), and this writer agree that an elaborate Russian trap for America has been sprung and that we are being drawn into a major war with Islam which could eventuate in World War III and the demise of America.

"Do not be slowed down in your endeavors by scoffers, those who say there will not be a Third World War. Are they God? Oh no, they will know what it is to see blackened bodies along the roadside, their children, stomachs distended with starvation. This cannot happen here in the United States,' I hear voices saying. O My children, it will!" - Our Lady, May 28, 1983

Russia and China Striking the United States where it hurts. Part 1

"Russia will also utilize the manpower of China as they make their thrust forward. I realize, My child, that this message has a great emotional impact upon you. Do not be afeared." - Jesus, March 26, 1983

From Asia Times Online Oct 19, 2006:
AMERICA'S ACUPUNCTURE POINTS

PART 1: Striking the US where it hurts

A noted Chinese theorist on modern warfare, Chang Mengxiong, compared China's form of fighting to "a Chinese boxer with a keen knowledge of vital body points who can bring an opponent to his knees with a minimum of movements". It is like key acupuncture points in ancient Chinese medicine. Puncture one vital point and the whole anatomy is affected. If America ever goes to war with China, say, over Taiwan, then America should be prepared for the following "acupuncture points" in its anatomy to be "punctured". Each of the vital points can bring America to its knees with a minimum of effort.

1.) Electro-magnetic Pulse (EMP) attack
China and Russia are two potential US adversaries that have the capability for this kind of attack. An EMP attack can either come from an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), a submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM), a long-range cruise missile, or an orbiting satellite armed with a nuclear or non-nuclear EMP warhead. A nuclear burst of one (or more) megaton some 400 kilometers over central United States (Omaha, Nebraska) can blanket the whole continental US with electro-magnetic pulse in less than one second.

An EMP attack will damage all electrical grids on the US mainland. It will disable computers and other similar electronic devices with microchips. Most businesses and industries will shut down. The entire US economy will practically grind to a halt. Satellites within line of sight of the EMP burst will also be damaged, adversely affecting military command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (C4ISR). Land-based intercontinental ballistic missiles will be rendered unserviceable in their silos. Anti-ballistic missile defenses will suffer the same fate. In short – total blackout. And American society as we know it will be thrown back to the Dark Ages.

Of course, the US may decide to strike first, but China and Russia now have the means of striking back with submarine-launched ballistic missiles with the same or even more devastating results. But knowing China's strategy of "active defense", when war with the US becomes imminent, China will surely not allow itself to be targeted first. It will seize the initiative as mandated by its doctrine by striking first.

China has repeatedly announced that it will not be the first to use nuclear weapons. But as an old Chinese saying goes: "There can never be too much deception in war." If it means the survival of the whole Chinese nation that is at stake, China will surely not allow a public statement to tie its hands and prevent it from seizing the initiative. As another saying goes: "All is fair in love and war."

2.) Cyber attack
America is the most advanced country in the world in the field of information technology (IT). Practically all of its industries, manufacturing, business and finance, telecommunications, key government services and defense establishment rely heavily on computers and computer networks.

But this heavy dependence on computers is a double-edged sword. It has thrust the US economy and defense establishment ahead of all other countries; but it has also created an Achilles' heel that can potentially bring the superpower to its knees with a few keystrokes on a dozen or so laptops.

China's new concept of a "people's war" includes IT warriors coming, not only from its military more than 2-million strong, but from the general citizenry of some 1.3 billion people. If we add the hackers and information warriors from Russia, Iran, North Korea, Venezuela, Cuba, Syria and other countries sympathetic to China, the cyber attack on the US would be formidable indeed.

So, if a major conflict erupts between China and America, more than a few dozen laptops will be engaged to hack America's military establishment; banking system; stock exchange; defense industries; telecommunication system; power grids; water system; oil and gas pipeline system; air traffic and train traffic control systems; C4ISR system, ballistic missile system, and other systems that prop up the American way of life.

America, on the whole, has not adequately prepared itself for this kind of attack. Neither has it prepared itself for a possible EMP attack. Such attacks can bring a superpower like America to its knees with a minimum of movement.

3.) Interdiction of US foreign oil supply
America is now 75% dependent on foreign imported oil. About 23.5% of America's imported oil supply comes from the Persian Gulf. To cut off this oil supply, Iran can simply mine the Strait of Hormuz, using bottom-rising sea mines. It is worthwhile to note that Iran has the world's fourth-largest inventory of sea mines, after China, Russia and the US.

Combined with sea mines, Iran can also block the narrow strait with supersonic cruise missiles such as Yakhonts, Moskits, Granits and Brahmos deployed on Abu Musa Island and all along the rugged and mountainous coastline of Iran fronting the Persian Gulf. This single action can bring America to its knees. Not only America but Japan (which derives 90% of its oil supply) and Europe (which derives about 60% of its oil supply from the Persian Gulf ) will be adversely affected.

In the event of a major conflict involving superpower America and its allies (primarily Japan and Britain) on the one hand and China and its allies (primarily Russia and Iran) on the other, Iran's role will become strategically crucial. Iran can totally stop the flow of oil coming from the Persian Gulf. This is the main reason why China and Russia are carefully nurturing intimate economic, cultural, political, diplomatic and military ties with Iran, which at one time was condemned by US President George W Bush as belonging to that "axis of evil", along with Iraq and North Korea.

This is also the reason why Iran is so brave in daring the US to attack it on the nuclear proliferation issue. Iran knows that it has the power to hurt the US. Without oil from the Gulf, the war machines of the US and its principal allies will literally run out of gas.

A single blow from Iran or China or Russia, or a combination of the three at the Strait of Hormuz can paralyze America. In addition, Chinese and Russian submarines can stop the flow of oil to the US and Japan by interdicting oil tanker traffic coming from the Middle East, Africa and Latin America. On the other hand, US naval supremacy will have minimal effect on China's oil supply because it is already connected to Kazakhstan with a pipeline and will soon be connected to Russia and Iran as well.

One wonders: what will be the price of oil if Iran blocks the Strait of Hormuz. It will surely drive oil prices sky high. Prolonged high oil prices can, in turn, trigger inflation in the US and a sharp decline of the dollar, possibly even a dollar free-fall. The collapse of the dollar will have a serious impact on the entire US economy.

This brings us to the next "acupuncture point" in the US anatomy: dollar vulnerability.

4.) Attack on the US dollar
One of the pillars propping up US superpower status and worldwide economic dominance is the dollar being accepted as the predominant reserve currency. Central banks of various countries have to stock up dollar reserves because they can only buy their oil requirements and other major commodities in US dollars.

This US economic strength, however, is a double-edged sword and can turn out to be America's economic Achilles' heel. A run of the US dollar, for instance, which would cause a dollar free-fall, can bring the entire US economy toppling down.

What is frightening for the US is the fact that China, Russia and Iran possess the power to cause a run on the US dollar and force its collapse.

China is now the biggest holder of foreign exchange reserves in the world, accumulating $941 billion as of June 30 and expected to exceed a trillion dollars by the end of 2006 - a first in world history. A decision by China to shift a major portion of its reserve to the euro or the yen or gold could trigger other central banks to follow suit. Nobody would want to be left behind holding a bagfull of dollars rapidly turning worthless. The herd psychology would be very difficult to control in this case because national economic survival would be at stake.

This global herd psychology motivated by the survival instinct will be strongly reinforced by the latent anger of many countries in the Middle East, Eurasia, Southeast Asia, Africa and Latin America that silently abhor the pugnacious arrogance displayed by the lone Superpower in the exercise of its unilateral and militaristic foreign policies. They will just be too happy to dump the dollar and watch the lone Superpower squirm and collapse.

The danger of the dollar collapsing is reinforced by the mounting US current account deficit, which sky-rocketed to $900 billion at an annual rate in the fourth quarter of 2005. This figure is 7% of US gross domestic product (GDP), the largest in US history. The current account deficit reflects the imbalance of US imports to its exports. The large imbalance shows that the US economy is losing its competitiveness, with US jobs and incomes suffering as a result.

These record deficits in external trade and current accounts mean that the US has to borrow from foreign lenders (mostly Japan and China) $900 billion annually or nearly $2.5 billion every single day to finance the gap between payments and receipts from the rest of the world. In financial year 2005, $352 billion was spent on interest payment of national debt alone - a national debt that has ballooned to $8.5 trillion as of August 24.

The International Monetary Fund has warned: "The US is on course to increase its net external liabilities to around 40% of its GDP within the next few years - an unprecedented level of external debt for a large industrial country."

The picture of the US federal budget deficit is equally grim. Dennis Cauchon, writing for USA Today said:

The federal government keeps two sets of books. The set the government promotes to the public has a healthier bottom line: a $318 billion deficit in 2005. The set the government doesn't talk about is the audited financial statement produced by the government's accountants following standard accounting rules. It reports a more ominous financial picture: a $760 billion deficit for 2005. If social security and medicare were included - as the board that sets accounting rules is considering - the federal deficit would have been $3.5 trillion. Congress has written its own accounting rules - which would be illegal for a corporation to use because they ignore important costs such as the growing expense of retirement benefits for civil servants and military personnel. Last year, the audited statement produced by the accountants said the government ran a deficit equal to $6,700 for every American household. The number given to the public put the deficit at $2,800 per household ... The audited financial statement - prepared by the Treasury Department - reveals a federal government in far worse financial shape than official budget reports indicate, a USA Today analysis found. The government has run a deficit of $2.9 trillion since 1997, according to the audited number. The official deficit since then is just $729 billion. The difference is equal to an entire year's worth of federal spending.

The huge US current account and trade deficits, the mounting external debt and the ever-increasing federal budget deficits are clear signs of an economy on the edge. They have dragged the dollar to the brink of the precipice. Such a state of economic affairs cannot be sustained for long, and the stability of the dollar is put in grave danger. One push and the dollar will plunge into free-fall. And that push can come from China, Russia or Iran, whom superpower America has been pushing and bullying all along.

We have seen what China can do. How can Russia or Iran, in turn, cause a dollar downfall? On September 2, 2003, Russia and Saudi Arabia signed an agreement on oil and gas cooperation. Russia and Saudi Arabia have agreed "to exercise joint control over the dynamics of prices for raw materials on foreign markets". The two biggest oil and gas producers, in cooperation, say, with Iran, could control oil production and sales to keep the price of oil relatively high. Sustained high oil prices, in turn, could trigger a high inflation rate in the US and put extreme pressure on the already weak dollar to trigger a more rapid decline.

Russia is now the world's biggest energy supplier, surpassing Saudi Arabia in energy exports measured in barrel oil equivalent or boe (13.3 million boe per day for Russia vs 10 million boe per day for Saudi Arabia). Russia has the biggest gas reserves in the world. Iran, on the other hand, runs second in the world to Russia in gas reserves, and also ranks among the top oil producers. If and when either Russia or Iran, or both, shift away from a rapidly declining dollar in energy transactions, many oil producers will follow suit. These include Venezuela, Indonesia, Norway, Sudan, Nigeria and the Central Asian Republics.

There is a good chance that even Saudi Arabia and the other oil-exporting countries in the Middle East may follow suit. They wouldn't want to be left with fast-shrinking dollars when the shift from petro-dollar to euro-dollar occurs. Again, the herd psychology will come into play, and the US will eventually be left with a dollar that is practically worthless. Considering the strong anti-American sentiments in the world caused by American unilateralism, especially in the Middle East, a concerted effort to dump the dollar in favor of the euro becomes even more plausible.

When the dollar was removed from the gold standard in August 1971, the dollar gained its strength through its use as the currency of choice in oil transactions. Once the dollar is rejected in favor of the euro or another currency for global oil transactions, the dollar will rapidly lose its value and central banks all over the world will be racing to diversify to other currencies. The shift from petro-dollar to petro-euro will have a devastating effect on the dollar. It could cause the dollar to collapse; and the whole US economy crushing down with it - a scene reminiscent of the collapse of the Twin Towers on September 11, 2001. But this one will be a thousand times more devastating.

A successful assault on the US dollar will make America crawl on its knees with a minimum of movements. And this assault can come from China, Russia or Iran - or a combination of the three - if they ever decide that they have had enough of US bullying.

5.) Diplomatic isolation
In 1991, when the Soviet Union collapsed from its own weight, the US emerged as the sole superpower in the world. At that crucial period, it would have been a great opportunity for the US to establish its global leadership and dominance worldwide. With the world's biggest economy, its control of international financial institutions, its huge lead in science and technology (specially information technology) and its unequaled military might, America could have seized the moment to establish a truly American Century.

But in the critical years after 1991, America had to make a choice between two divergent approaches to the use of its almost unlimited power: soft power or hard power. The exercise of soft power would have seen America leading the world in the fight against poverty, disease, drugs, environmental degradation, global warming and other ills plaguing humankind.

It would have pushed America in leading the move to address the debt burden of poor, undeveloped or developing countries; promoting distance learning in remote rural areas to empower the poor economically by providing them access to quality education; and helped poor countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America build highways, railways, ports, airports, hospitals, schools and telecommunication systems.

Unfortunately, such was not to be. If there was any effort at the exercise of soft power at all, it was minimal. In fact, it is not America which is practicing soft power in diplomacy but a rising power in the East - China. China has been busy in the past decade or so exercising soft power in almost all countries in Africa, Latin America, Central Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia and the Middle East, winning most of the countries in these regions to its side. Through the use of soft power, China has created a de facto global united front under its silent, low-key leadership.

The US, on the other hand, decided to employ mainly hard power in the exercise of its global power. It adapted the policy of unilateralism and militarism in its foreign policy. It discarded the United Nations and even the advice of close allies. It unilaterally discarded signed international treaties (such as the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty). It adapted the policy of regime change and preventive war. It led the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in the 78-day bombing of Serbia purportedly for "humanitarian" reasons. It invaded Afghanistan and Iraq without UN sanctions and against the advice of key European allies like France and Germany.

The US-led war in Iraq was a tactical victory for the US initially, but has resulted in strategic defeat overall. The Iraq war caused the US to lose its principal allies in Europe and be isolated, despised and hated in many parts of the world. Without too many friends and allies, the US is likened to an "emperor with no clothes".

So in a major conflict between America and China, isolated America cannot possibly win against a global united front led by China and Russia.

This brings us to the question of alliances, another "acupuncture point" in the anatomy of the superpower, which will be addressed in the second part of this report.

Japanese companies shut Chinese units

Dozens of Japanese businesses shut operations in China on Monday and urged expatriates to stay indoors, fearing an escalation of protests triggered by Tokyo’s decision to nationalise a group of islands claimed by Beijing.
China has seen sporadic anti-Japan demonstrations since the Japanese government said last week it had bought the privately-owned Senkaku Islands – called the Diaoyu Islands in China – to bring them under state control. On Monday, protests continued, forcing companies including Fast Retailing, owner of the Uniqlo brand, to close outlets in Beijing.

The protests are the biggest flare-up of anti-Japan sentiment in China since at least 2005, when demonstrations swept Chinese cities after Tokyo said it planned to award gas-drilling rights in disputed waters.
Protests are expected to continue on Tuesday, the 81st anniversary of the start of the 1931 Mukden Incident, also known as the Manchurian Incident, in which the Imperial Japanese Army blew up a railway as a pretext for invading northeastern China.
Underscoring the rising tension between Asia’s two largest economies, Chinese state-run papers reported that more than 10,000 Chinese fishing boats sailed towards the disputed islands on Monday.
Leon Panetta, the US defence secretary, called for “calm and restraint” on both sides during a visit to Tokyo, the first leg of a week-long Asian tour.
“It is in everybody’s interests – everybody’s interests – for Japan and China to maintain good relations and to find a way to avoid further escalation,” he said. Mr Panetta was scheduled to arrive in Beijing for talks on Monday night.
Meanwhile, Japanese companies are hunkering down to avoid conflict.
Canon, the consumer electronics group, said it had suspended operations at three factories until Wednesday to ensure employee safety.
At the convenience store 7-11, owned by the Japanese group Seven & I Holdings, management closed 40 of 151 stores in central Beijing, according to a receptionist who answered the phone after working hours. “No one has broken into or attacked any of our stores yet, but we are doing this for security purposes,” said the receptionist, who declined to give his name.
At a darkened 7-11 branch near the central business district of Beijing, one would-be shopper looking for his supper expressed disappointment to find the store closed. “We’ve all got to eat, Chinese or Japanese.”
Several Chinese companies and even government agencies issued warnings to their staff about the expected protests on Tuesday. One shipping company in Qingdao told its workers not to drive to work, for fear that Japanese cars in the company car park could be ransacked, according to a post on Weibo, China’s largest microblog platform.
One Japanese man in Guizhou province said on Weibo that he had been verbally attacked many times over the last several days. “Although I’m not injured, it makes me very sad,” he wrote.

1,000 Chinese boats to arrive in waters near Senkakus: report Update2

BEIJING, Sept. 17, Kyodo

Around 1,000 Chinese fishing boats are expected to arrive in waters near the
Senkaku Islands claimed by China later Monday, the state-run China National Radio
reported, in what may be Beijing's additional countermeasures over Japan's
nationalization of the islets.

If a large number of Chinese vessels intrude into Japanese territorial waters around
the Japanese-controlled islands in the East China Sea, it could trigger unexpected
incidents such as clashes with Japan Coast Guard patrol ships, further escalating
tensions between the two countries.

The radio station said in an online edition that Chinese fisheries authorities will
monitor the fishing boats' activities near the uninhabited islets, which Beijing calls
Diaoyu, via a marine observation satellite.

Russia is as concerned about jihadists as the US. I do not believe Russia is going to support the growth of terrorism. Russia has had its own problemms with terrorism.

China-Japan Dispute Over Islands Risks $340 Billion Trade
By Bloomberg News - Sep 17, 2012 3:43 AM PT

China and Japan’s worst diplomatic crisis since 2005 is putting at risk a trade relationship that’s tripled in the past decade to more than $340 billion.

Toyota Motor Corp. (7203), Honda Motor Co. (7267) and Panasonic Corp. (6752) reported damage to their operations in China as thousands marched in more than a dozen cities yesterday after Japan last week said it would purchase islands claimed by both countries. Protesters called for boycotts of Japanese goods and in some instances smashed store fronts and cars.

Tensions between China and Japan further complicate policy makers’ efforts to fortify growth in Asia’s biggest economies as the European debt crisis saps demand for exports. Panasonic and Canon Inc. (7751) today said they’re shutting some plants in China through tomorrow and the China Automobile Dealers Association said the protests will hurt sellers of Toyota, Honda and Nissan Motor Co. cars in China more than Japan’s March 2011 earthquake.

“The escalating dispute is adding one more layer of uncertainty,” said Liu Li-Gang, a Hong Kong-based economist at Australia & New Zealand Banking Group Ltd. (ANZ), who previously worked at the World Bank. “Japan is now more reliant on China for economic growth than vice versa. Its already weak economic recovery may falter. China will suffer less.”

In 2011, China was the largest market for Japanese exports, while Japan was the fourth-largest market for Chinese exports. China’s shipments to Japan totaled $148.3 billion last year as it imported $194.6 billion of Japanese goods, according to Chinese customs data.
Disputed Islands

Tokyo Governor Shintaro Ishihara triggered the dispute in April when he said he may use public funds to buy the islands, known as Diaoyu in Chinese and Senkaku in Japanese, from a private Japanese owner. Tensions escalated after Japan’s cabinet approved the purchase of the islands for 2.05 billion yen ($26 million) on Sept. 11. China has said it doesn’t accept the move.

Sales of Japanese-branded passenger cars fell last month in China, compared with gains of more than 10 percent for German, American and South Korean vehicles according to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers. China is the world’s largest car market.

Toyota and Honda both reported that fires damaged their dealerships in the eastern Chinese city of Qingdao. Separately, Phoenix Satellite Television Holdings Ltd. (2008) showed footage of Japanese cars that had been overturned, with their windshields smashed by protesters.

Many dealerships in China that sell Japanese cars have shut after some outlets were attacked and vandalized, said Luo Lei, deputy secretary general of the China Automobile Dealers Association.
Ransacked Stores

Protesters in Qingdao ransacked a Jusco supermarket and a Heiwado Co. (8276) department store in the city of Changsha was attacked, the Kyodo News Agency reported.

Shares of Ajisen China Holdings Ltd. (538), an operator of Japanese ramen restaurants in China, fell the most in more than fourth months in Hong Kong trading. Aeon Stores (Hong Kong) Co. (984), the Hong Kong-listed unit of Japan’s Aeon Co. that operates Jusco supermarkets in China, fell the most in more than three months.

The declines were the result of concerns that the two companies’ sales would be hurt by the dispute over the islands and that some of their stores may be vandalized, Linus Yip, chief strategist at First Shanghai Securities, said by phone.

Equity markets were shut for a public holiday in Japan today.
‘Illegal Protests’

In the southern city of Guangzhou, police said they detained seven people for vandalizing a Japanese-brand car yesterday and held another three for smashing an unidentified store front. The northern city of Xi’an banned “illegal” protests in some areas and said any vandalism justified by “national interest” won’t be allowed, according to a statement posted on the local public security bureau’s website.

Panasonic today said it’s temporarily closing plants in the cities of Qingdao, Suzhou and Zhuhai. The electronics maker is checking on damage at its Qingdao and Suzhou facilities, spokesman Atsushi Hinoki said.

Canon spokesman Hirotomo Fujimori said the company was closing two of its plants in Guangdong province and one in Jiangsu province through tomorrow to ensure the safety of employees. No damage has been reported at the plants, he said.
Manchurian Incident

September 18 is the anniversary of the Mukden Incident, also known as the Manchurian Incident, which took place in 1931 near what is now the Chinese city of Shenyang and led to the Japanese invasion of the northeastern portions of China.

The protests this month have come as economic growth in China moderated in the second quarter to the slowest pace in three years.

That’s already led Komatsu Ltd. (6301), the world’s second-biggest maker of construction equipment, to cut its annual profit forecast as a Chinese government campaign to rein in home prices has depressed demand. Of Komatsu’s 1.98 trillion yen revenue in the year through March, about 14 percent came from China, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

Hitachi Construction Machinery Co. (6305), the third-biggest maker of building equipment, said in July that it expected sales of excavators built by foreign suppliers in China to drop 20 percent to 56,000 units in the year to March 2013, following a 37 percent slide the previous year.
Japanese Investment

That hasn’t stopped Japanese investments in China. Foreign direct investment by companies from Japan surged 19.1 percent from a year earlier to $4.73 billion in the first seven months of this year, according to the Chinese Ministry of Commerce. By comparison, investment from the European Union fell 2.7 percent and funds from the U.S. rose 1 percent during the same period.

Protesters also called for a boycott of Japanese goods after demonstrations swept Chinese cities in 2005 in a row over school textbooks that critics said downplayed Japan’s wartime atrocities, prompting some companies from the nation to reconsider investment plans for China.

That didn’t prevent Chinese imports from Japan surging 15.2 percent in 2006, almost triple the previous year’s pace.

The trade and economic interests of the world’s second- and third-biggest economies have become increasingly intertwined, said ANZ’s Liu. An escalation of the dispute could deal “a blow to the Asian economy and the global one as a whole,” he said.

What this has to do with is the exclusive economic zone which the county that the territory belongs to can enforce regarding fishing rights, undersea mining and energy exploitation along with shipping restrictions and inspections.

You put radars, SAM/BMD and anti-shipping missiles on those islands and you effectively control the entire northern half of the PRC's coast and access to Taiwan or access to Japan and South Korea via the main shipping routes from around Asia and the Middle East.

I think Japan is in a military pact similar to NATO for that region of the world. Think it is called SINO but not sure with my memory the way it is. However I do remember something about South Korea, Tiawan. PI, and maybe a couple other nations along with Japan in the treaty. If one is attacked the others come to the aid. If so it would be all out war in the South China Sea. Mayber some one with a better memory of the history in the region can help.

It's called SEATO, and the US is part of it.

Lurker your comment on the islands reflects a need to understand what is at stake. See housecarl's comment. The same sorts of things are at stake in the Spratley's farther south.

So their is no mutual military agreement for Southeast Asia. Gee what will O do. Come to the aid of our allies or go golfing.

One other factor in this World War is India. They have had a belly full of the Pakis and both have nukes. I don't think India has much use for China either. Since we are about to explode thought I would bring up all the players with stakes in the game.

RE snippet from above article: "....Dozens of Japanese businesses shut operations in China on Monday and urged expatriates to stay indoors, fearing an escalation of protests triggered by Tokyo’s decision to nationalise a group of islands claimed by Beijing.
China has seen sporadic anti-Japan demonstrations since the Japanese government said last week it had bought the privately-owned Senkaku Islands – called the Diaoyu Islands in China – to bring them under state control. On Monday, protests continued, forcing companies including Fast Retailing, owner of the Uniqlo brand, to close outlets in Beijing...." Am reposting my reply to the article from another thread:".. This was on BBC this morning, report from Beijing and how swiftly backlash against Japanese nationals living and working there is spreading. Japanese businessman was speaking about how Chinese taxidrivers refuse to let him in their cabs. There is some sort of Japanese business district in Beijing, nightlife, bars, restaurants and shops that are all closed this week out of concern of a kind of Chi com "kristallnacht" ahead.."

Concur with previous comments, Japan is severely weakened since Fukushima. There is rage at the radioactive fallout that has drifted into China, still exporting rice and other food items they know are contaminated etc. It would not take much to light the fuse there. Expect a resource/power grab *while* the other conflicts erupt.
Our hands will be tied and hard pressed to defend Japan. I anticipate a naval evac of their island as its toxic now rather than a defensive battle. What commander would puts boots on ground to repel a Chinese attack or occupation knowing they are being exposed to radioactive contamination? I wouldn't..."

this could heat up quickly ...

Chinese national media has reported that roughly 1,000 fishing boats have set sail from mainland China are due to arrive in the waters surrounding the disputed Senkaku/Diaoyu Islands before the end of Monday. Having departed from several coastal provinces like Fujian and Zhejiang, this act could be endorsed by Beijing as one of the largest oppositions against Japan and its government’s nationalization of the disputed territory. Should the large number of Chinese fishing boats enter Japan’s territorial waters, they will undoubtedly encounter the patrol ships of the Japan Coast Guard.

It is also believed that the armada could be accompanied by the six Chinese patrol ships that have been stationed near the islands since last week. On Friday, those six ships entered Japanese waters and prompted a standoff with the Japan Coast Guard warning them to leave. Chinese fishing authorities have already said that they will be observing and overlooking the boats’ activities.

As Tuesday, September 18th, marks the 81st anniversary of Japan’s invasion of Manchuria in 1931, these fishing boats may be part of a large-scale demonstration to dwarf even the wide-spread violent protests that took place all over China throughout the weekend. Several large Japanese companies halted their operations after reports of vandalism and destruction of Japanese property, while Prime Minister Noda called on Beijing to exert more effort in restraining the violence and protecting the safety of all Japanese nationals living in China.

We have more than boots on the ground in Japan. We have two bases and I believe the George Washington is home ported in Japan along with its task force. Current postion unknown. We have a huge stake in this game. Could be two rounds of golf for Zero.

As dangerous as this situation is, why are we not hearing about what is going on in the MSM, no mention of it on Fox News. It just seems strange to me that this info is not getting out. Its almost as if someone has put out the word not to say anything.
