An impoverished Chinese grandmother is being hailed as a hero after rescuing more than 30 newborn babies that she found dumped in trash cans while scavenging to make a living.

Lou Xiaoying, now 88 and suffering kidney failure, spent the past 40 years saving abandoned infants from the streets of Jinhua, the Huffington Post reports.

Mrs Xiaoying, who has one biological daughter, raised four of the children with her late husband Lin Zin and gave the others to family and friends.

She found her first baby while collecting rubbish in 1972 and adopted her last child Qiling, a little boy she found in a dumpster, when she was 82.

"Even though I was already getting old I could not simply ignore the baby and leave him to die in the trash," Mrs Xiaoying said.

Her adopted daughter Zhang Juju, 33, said her mother always tried to give her children the best lives possible despite her extreme poverty.

Now that the 88-year-old is confined to a hospital bed, too sick to move or speak, people in her community have come forward to help support her and continue her life's mission.

A fundraising website has been set up to pay for her hospital bills and a local school has stepped forward to realise her dying wish that her youngest child Qiling receive an education.

The Chinese government introduced its one-child policy in 1978, after which families began abandoning female children because they were seen as less valuable than boys.

I thought this was going to be a story on someone finding a bag of kittens...

Humanity sucks but for the occasional ray of sunshine, like this person...

She'll receive a great reward in heaven. She took care of the "least of my brothers." She didn't just talk, she walked the walk!

I was thinking the same thing when I read the headline.

The really troubling part is how many she did NOT find and how many were left to die in dumpsters in other cities and towns all over China.

Hopefully there are many more out there like her.

:applaud:

As bad as abortion just-for-the-hell-of-it is, this sort of thing really sends a chill up my spine -- to "throw away" a live, breathing newborn baby? Good God!

I fully understand that most Chinese aren't Christians, if they're even religious at all, but the innate urge to protect innocent babies pre-dates Christianity, I'm sure.

What ARE these people, cave men?

To quote Mother Angelica who is the founder of the Catholic ETWN tv channel, "We are all called to be great Saints. Don't miss the opportunity!"

I would say that this grandmother will be seeing herself amongst them when she is called Home by our Dear Lord.

May God Bless her forever and that her mission is taken up by future saints in her country. V

You know Brutus, my old grandpa who was a chewy old Sioux/Anishnabe (he was a Yuwipi man) always said of a people, was this, "You can always tell the character of a people by the way they treat their animals".

The way they treat animals in China is so totally brutal (I have seen vid footage that will stay which I can never forget. Ever.) that it is no shock to me that they treat humans like souless meat over there.

It pains my heart to know that some poor baby is perishing a horrible drawn out death in a garbage can. I pray to God that there are more brave souls to come over there who will take up her brave mission, continuing to save more lives. V

I knew it had to be China, where a baby's life is worthless unless it's a male. These idiotic tribalists can't realize that they're breeding their culture into eventual extinction.

Works for me....

I couldn't agree more, I believe she put herself at great personal risk taking those children, China is ruthless in it's 1 child policy, going so far as trying to force Chinese nationals in America to abort, if unsuccessful, they have tried to kidnap these poor women. Amazing story, and a wonderful woman.

"What you did for these, the least of my brethren, you did for Me."

That is on my mind all the time. Thank you for posting this thread. It reminds us what is important in this world. And it is sad now in America that so many will abandon their children too.
