Mitt Romney's campaign team stoked speculation about who his vice presidential candidate will be as one report said Condoleezza Rice was a surprise name near the top of his list.

"Sometime soon, Mitt will be announcing his choice for VP," said a statement from the Republican presidential hopeful's camp, asking for $3 donations "for the chance to meet Mitt and his choice for VP in person."

A long list of possibles includes leading names like Rob Portman and Paul Ryan, but The Drudge Report, known to have good sources in the Republican camp, said it had been told that Rice was now a top contender.

"Late Thursday evening, Mitt Romney's presidential campaign launched a new fundraising drive, 'Meet The VP' -- just as Romney himself has narrowed the field of candidates to a handful, sources reveal," the report said.

"And a surprise name is now near the top of the list: Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice!"

Rice, who was former president George W. Bush's secretary of state, has been frequently mentioned as a potential vice presidential pick for Romney, and is someone who could lend foreign policy heft to the ticket.

As an African-American woman, she is seen as having the potential to blunt the advantages which President Barack Obama has in two important demographics.

Rice would still be considered a surprise choice as she carries a lot of baggage from the still unpopular Bush era, not least her leading role as an architect of the Iraq war.

She has also repeatedly said that she is not interested in being Romney's running mate and is enjoying being on the faculty as a professor at Stanford University in California.

Drudge said that it was her performance at Romney's Utah retreat a few weeks ago, when she received two standing ovations for her "extended argument for American leadership in the world," that made her a serious contender.

"Everyone left with her name on their lips," said the report, which contained no quotes and gave no sources.

Portman, a senator from the battleground state of Ohio, and Ryan, a rising star in the Republican party who chairs the House budget committee, have up until now been considered two of the frontrunners.

Other names include Florida Senator Marco Rubio, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, New Mexico Governor Susana Martinez, Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell, Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty, and Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal.

Romney has said he will announce its decision before the August 27-30 Republican convention in Tampa Bay, Florida, where he will be officially crowned the nominee to take on Obama in the November 6 election.

I give up.
She is what they call a team player and always has been and always will be. Which can be good, or it can be bad. Depends on who your boss is. If she's happy now, I would say leave her alone, but that's just my opinion.

Condi Rice?!!
You are kidding me, right?!

A desk jockey, mealy mouthed, over-educated fool who never broke a sweat in her life.

My guts are hurting now.
Okay--they need a token black face on the campaign, and that's what she is.
A face.

Please God don't let her open her mouth.

From a political and electable point-of-view, this seems to me to be a very good move for the Romney campaign.

Saved, to glorify God.
Say it ain't so.

We DESPERATELY NEED a strong, leader, a constitutionalist, a man like Ron Paul.
She is NO LEADER.
She is a token black face.
God help us should she become Vice PRESIDENT, so close , a heartbeat from the Presidency.

Actually comments such as yours are how those who are never happy with any candidate, snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Its not even confirmed yet and people such as yourself are making up excuses (and pretty weak ones) as to why she would not be a good choice.

Oh well, I guess 4 more years of Obama would make you happen. Me, I would vote for a rock before I would allow Obama to get 4 more years.

Huh?!
Condi Rice is a zipper head!

We need a "statesman" --not policy pusher/wonk/hack/globalist/ponzi-schemer/.

Condi Rice is the absolute bottom of the barrel like John McShame, Bob Dole, Gerald Ford and so on.
Put her inside some think-tank cooking up ways to steal away our sovereignty--this is her place.

Well, for a juxtapose, how about Rep. Allen West or Gen. Russel L. Honoré?

Allen West is a stark raving lunatic/Christian Imperialist.
If you love the idea of WWIII get him close to the football.

I don't know about the General though--post more about him.

I would like to agree with you but since Condi was groomed by none other than Madeline Albrights father you might want to think twice on this one.

Ugh...

I read somewhere that Romney would be "Bush on steroids"... This would seem to confirm that...

Well she's smart and everything, but I don't really care to have anybody from the previous administration involved in the next White House. And I can't help but feel that she is being selected for her sex and skin color.

I'm already not enthused about Romney and only voting for him because I don't think we will survive another four years of the current mess we have. I'd rather have somebody a bit more exciting in the VP slot.

I find Shinmen Takezo offensive, but rather than be redundant and explain why, I'll let the more reasonable members ponder that one.

Condi is not my first, second or even third choice,(and mitt has that same distinction) but....anyone but obama.

LTC West is an honorable man, who served his nation honorably, saved a whole slew of his men by doing something effective, albeit politically incorrect to get a ragheaded goat humper to talk about where an ambush was waiting, and got hung out to dry by the PC Army for his efforts. While I disagree wholeheartedly with your characterization of him, if that's the perception the world has, then he's the perfect man to have with his hands on the football. Maybe if he were in the WH, the world would once again respect us...or at least fear us. Just as good.

Condi? Not just no, but hell no! She's one of the architects of the woefully inept Bush foreign policy, and you see where that's gotten us.

Condi Rice == neo-con war monger. I will not vote for war.

But let's hear from all the war mongers on this board. Who among you would vote for war? Please be mindful that a vote for Romney (or Obama) is a vote for more war?

Think I'm kidding? Romney himself said he would promote war against Iran. Rice has stated we should go to war against Iran.

A black woman for Vice President would make Romney electable because the masses don't care about "policy", they only care about "appearance".

In this thread we have a few reasonable responses.

Then we have red koolaid drinking statists pushing loyalty to party over loyalty to country.

And single issues statists who wish to enforce their social agendas with the force of government.

The red team is no different than the blue team when you boil it down:

War, free trade, deficit spending, currency debasement, and burgeoning police state.

Anybody but Obama? Anybody? How about Stalin or HItler?

Jeez.

This is why this country is completely screwed.

I don't support Romney anyway, but Condi would be a mistake. For all her education and erudition, she was less than stellar as SecState, and is not going to project the capacity to lead that the country wants right now. Her selection reeks of tokenism: she's a woman, like Palin, and the Romney camp is likely hoping to capitalize on the push they saw Palin give to McCain (though they are completely misreading the reason; it wasn't her sex that caused the excitement). They get the twofer as well since she's black, which they no doubt perceive as a counter to Obama's ethnicity. America isn't interested in trying something new right now, even in the VP slot; Romney would do better to select a Jack Welch with some foreign policy experience rather than a wonk of the first water with no business background. Additionally, there are going to be more than a few who will see this for what it is: nothing more than button-pushing to try to buy votes, with no thought given to anything past the election. Paradoxically, I think this will make things worse with regard to black voters, who would either see her selection as tokenism, or dismiss the Republicans because Rice is an "oreo".

If Romney picks a woman it will be Hutchinson or Rice.

I can't imagine it being Palin.

John Nance Garner's comment "The Vice Presidency isn't worth a bucket of warm spit (or piss depending on your source.)"

I always liked Condi's erudition. Of course I liked Obama's too, before he "outed" himself as a communist - about January 20th 2009.

Now to Condi being a "heartbeat away from the presidency" this concerns me a little. Smart is one thing. Not having been a business or political leader previously is another. (She might be a right wing, female, Obama once installed.)

And Condi is already seen by those of her race as an "oreo cookie" (yum!) So this kind of dog-ears the corner on a Romney race card.

I think you'll see a more conventional human alongside Romney. Not RP (which has been debated but discounted by Mr. Paul himself) but an up and comer politically. And separated from Romney by geographical basis.

Rand Paul?

She's not pro-life. End of story.

I don't know where Drudge got this, but Romney has already pledged to nominate someone who is pro-life to be his VP running-mate. It might be wishful thinking by some of the big money behind Mitt.....Condi got two standing ovations at a recent big-money fundraiser for Mitt. But I don't think Romney would seriously consider her, she is still too much identified with the Bush administration.

I hope Romney chooses someone who would be capable of running the country if something happened to him. I prefer someone who has been a state governor for both president and veep. I am sick of career politicians who don't know what they're doing being put in important positions, our current CIC and veep for example.

Read VP Dick Cheney's book and you will find why Rice was and is a nightmare. There is something that has been taught to black america, both consevative and liberal that the rest of the world acts with altruism just like America. That America is not special nor is nor has ever been 1st or best at anything. She was Bush's kryptonite in the state department. The disasters we are dealing with now with North Korea and many other regions were because of her instance that if we treat them like they had good intentions then they will eventually fall into line.

SHE WAS and IS A NIGHTMARE! But in Conservative garb she becomes a trojan horse.

I gotta join ya on this one! SWMBO and have both been hoping Allan West would be called to fix some of the crap we got from Bush and Ohbummer! As for his kicking off WWIII, maybe it's past time declare "open season" on some of the problems instead of sticking your head in the sand and being "politically correct"! PC is part of what got us here in the first place!

It is my understanding that Condi Rice has publicly stated she voted for President Obama. If that is the case she is a liability to the Romney campaign. She would not be able to speak on camera or debate, without her voting record being main topic of the conversation.

uhhh, first - Ron Paul is not interested in VP
second, I don't think Rice is token anything
third, the constitutionalists we do have in the Congress don't need to be taken from the Congress for the do-nothing position of VP

Yep, exactly. And it's war (and the criminals who advocate/demand it) that brought this country to the brink of destruction. It's war that makes them billionaires and us - peasants.
