OT/MISC Ways to "fight the system"

changed

Preferred pronouns: dude/bro
We've talked about some of these years ago, but its time to bring it up again. Our votes don't work, writing your congressman doesn't work, and there are a bunch of idiots around us that elected the president we have. Armed revolt is NOT an option. There are things you can do to not contribute to the system. Its a way of going gray or being John Galt somewhat. Please add to the list as you see fit.

Do not give out your social security number. Get a passport, use that for I.D. Don't use your driver's license as I.D. Use it for driving only.

Stop using your credit and/or debit card. Use cash. If you use credit/debit, you are at risk for identity theft, electonic theft, will have no privacy, plus you will go into debt. If you are in debt, you are a slave to them until you pay them off.

Do not own a large luxury house. Rent or own semi-rural land with a comfortable sized house on it. That way you do not contribute excessive property taxes (food for the beast) to the system. Energy costs and taxes associated with that are lower. Do you need homeowners insurance? I don't want to get into an argument here, but usually when you try to collect, they deny. For example, if your roof shingles are damaged in a hail storm and you file a claim, they will say that your roof is over 15 years old anyhow and you will only get a prorated payment (not enough to pay for a roof job).

Do you live in a neighborhood with a Home Owner's Association? If so, get out. Go rural.

Do you really need health insurance? If you go to the emergency room, they have to treat you whether you have insurance or not. I have health insurance, on the two occasions where I had large bills and really needed it, my health insurance provider denied the claim. MF, I am still PO'd about that.

Can you use candles rather than lights? Can you grill outside rather than use the stove? If so, do so.

Get rid of cable or satellite tv and the propaganda, commercials, and taxes associated with that. Get an antenna for your digital tv. When Television was switched from analog to digital, they let everyone think that they needed to get cable or satellite to continue watching tv. Wrong, as long as you have a digital tv or coverter box, you can continue using an over the air antenna. The bigger the better. The internet has its own issues, but it is important now days for the spread of information. With the internet, you can get Netflix and Hulu.com and others and won't need cable. If you need to watch that NFL game, go to a buddies house.

Do you need your own internet? If your neighbor has wireless internet, pay him $20/month for access to his internet connection. Works for me.

Going to the movie theater is a waste of money. Going to luxury restaurants is a waste of money.

Get rid of your luxury vehicle and get a beater that get's good gas mileage. You will pay less in ad volerem taxes, insurance, and fuel taxes. Get a Honda or Toyota - great gas mileage and reliable. Yea, I know they are not made in America, but not union made either (AFAIK). Don't purchase full coverage, get the minimum liability coverage (poor people don't get sued).
Get a motorcycle. Great on gas mileage, great in a traffic jam. Do you need to drive everywhere? Can you catch a ride with a friend, walk, or ride a bike? (Don't take mass transit).
Obey traffic laws. Go the speed limit. I know, you don't like to go slow, but if you get a speeding ticket, it feeds the beast.

Avoid roads that have tolls.

Do you need a land line and a cell phone? If you have both, you are paying taxes and fees that are used for stupid stuff like free Obama-phones for welfare queens and pimp daddies.

Don't send your kid to public school. Homeschool if you can't afford private school. In public school, your kid will be indoctrinated and will learn to cuss, learn about sex, disrespect their parents, and how to get beat up at an early age. Plus, if you send your kid to public school, the school will get more federal money.

A college degree is not a viable option anymore. You will owe so much in student loans when you graduate that it will take decades to pay them off after you graduate. Go to technical college and learn a trade, or if you go to a liberal arts college, take a couple semesters of math and a couple semesters of English. Thats it, you don't need calculus, you don't need music appreciation, fine arts, philosophy, sociology, psycology, etc.

Supplement your home heat with wood so that you pay less in energy costs and taxes.

Select a home with a septic system and well rather than city or county water and sewage.

There used to be two reasons to keep your money in the bank - safety and interest. Now, interest is near zero, its not as safe as it used to be (your bank could fail next Friday), you don't have privacy, and it is a pain in the neck to start a savings or checking bank account (they think you are a drug dealer or terrorist). If you have a judgment against you or owe taxes to the IRS, they can freeze your accounts or confiscate the money. For bills, keep just enough in the bank to cover them, and keep the rest of the cash at home under your firearm. Pay for bills with money orders. Mexicans do it, African Americans with bad credit and who can't get checking accounts do it.

Do not buy your groceries at a store that requires customer cards. Buy them at a Mom and Pop store with cash. Also, grow your own food. Plant fruit and nut trees now. They take a while to produce.
Can you buy your milk from a local dairy farmer? Can you buy eggs from someone that has chickens? Can you buy meat from a small town butcher shop?

If something malfunctions, can you fix it rather than throw it away and purchase a new one?

Save aluminum cans, save copper and other metals to supplement your income.

Own guns. Get a .22 pistol, a .22 rifle, at least one shotgun, a deer rifle, and another pistol of higher caliber. If you can buy them privately at rummage sales or flea markets, pounce on it.

Don't fly. Drive. If you live in Atlanta and you want to go to Nashville, you get in your car and you are there in 4 hours. If you fly, the flight might only take an hour, but you will spend more than three hours in airports, plus you will have your civil rights violated by TSA workers. (Gas $30, flight $200).

Love your neighbor. Share extra garden produce with them, barter with them, watch their property for them if they are out of town, feed their dog. Share tools. Do both of you need a riding lawnmower? A snow blower? Don't go halfsies on them, just have an agreement, I'll get a snow blower, you get a riding lawnmower, I'll mow your lawn, you snowblow my sidewalk and driveway.

Work for yourself. Start your own business if you can.

Shop at thrift stores and rummage sales.

Take your kids target shooting and hunting. If you don't have kids, take your nieces and nephews, and grandchildren. Seriously, the reason there are so many anti-gun nuts is because someone didn't take them shooting when they were younger. Their only experience with guns is what they see on the evening news and in the movies.

Brew your own beer. Make your own wine. Grow your own tobacco.

Do research. How do illegal Mexicans get by here in the U.S.? How do the Amish and Mennonites get by in the U.S.?

If you are in the stock market, get out. It is a rigged game. The only people guaranteed to make money from the stock market are the CEO's and congressmen or senators. Congressmen and Senators are allowed to engage in insider trading. It is legal for them. (its true, not a conspiracy theory).

When you invest in stock, that money goes to pay the multi-million dollar salaries of the top management and then the corp goes bankrupt and your stock is worthless.

Invest in things you can hold and carry, guns, food.
Get your teeth fixed, get a spare pair of glasses, keep your vehicle well-maintained, buy a whole spare set of tires.

That reminds me of some things I do.

You don't need a credit card to buy online from Amazon.com and you can get anything from Amazon.

Whenever you've saved up enough change take it to the Coinstar machine at the local supermarket. Instead of converting it to cash, get an Amazon gift card receipt. Take the receipt, redeem the number on it at Amazon using some made up name and you can have it shipped anywhere in the U.S.

After you've checked the coins for junk silver of course.

Good list.

I just wanna say something about the CCs. I have a couple I use and pay the balance off every month. There are many things I can only get online, not locally.

2 points -

#1 - I save a lot of money when buying online. Why should I pay $20 locally when I can buy it online for $15? Not to mention the time and takes to go buy said item. Also, factor in the gas used up in going to purchase this item and returning home. It all adds up.

#2 - I pay no sales tax (most of the time) on items purchased online. Don't feed the beast, right?

When you buy on-line you put local business out of business - unless of course you shop at a big box store.

Anytime you use a credit card or a debit card you feed the beast. Processing fees are scrapped off the top.

Ok, I'm a little slow today.
Why use a passport, not a DL?

Anyone else still have their paper SS card from the 60's? It dosen't have any numbers on the back.

The driver's license should be for driving only, not ID for other stuff.
Also, there's privacy issues. For most people, their Driver's license has their address on it. When you show the clerk your DL when you buy beer or cigs, they can see where you live. If you are a cute chick, they could come to your house later.
Your passport doesn't have your address listed in it.
About a year ago, I went to the doctor and when they asked for ID, I made the mistake of giving them my DL. The lady slid it through a scanner. Now, they have all of the information that was on my magnetic strip in their computer.
I am not aware of a passport having a strip like that that someone can scan.

Just FYI...

When you invest in stock, that money goes to pay the multi-million dollar salaries of the top management and then the corp goes bankrupt and your stock is worthless.

Only true if you happen to buy the stock during the IPO (Initial Public Offering). Most here on TB2K are probably not connected enough to get a shot at the IPO. Any stock buying and selling activity after that very first day (IPO) is simply between buyers and sellers of the stock. No dollars changing hands for stock sales after the IPO goes to the company or company management itself unless company management is selling their own stock. The day-to-day stock market activity, other than the day of the IPO, is not benefiting the company whose stock is being bought or sold.

My way of fighting the system is to grow at least some of my own food and preserve local produce when it is cheaper in season

We try to buy local to keep the money and jobs in the community.

I used to encourage people to call their Congressmen or woman and Senators and let them know how they feel. Not any longer.

Pass it forward...
"I was thinking of this "fight the system" meme yesterday, and trying to remember a short story I'd read long ago. The main character throws a rock through the window of local politician's office. Glass replaced helps glass shop. He does it again. Cops investigate glass shop. Does it in another town. Then it spreads across the country with acts of vandalism and civil disobedience while he does nothing more."

"The Window War" by Mike Vanderboegh. He reposted it at the excellent Sipsey Street Irregulars blog back in 2009:

http://sipseystreetirregulars.blogspot.com/2009/02/back-by-semi-popular-demand-window-war.html

Gordon Dickson--I think--wrote an novel called "Enter a Pilgrim" wherein one man instigates an act of defiance against the space aliens who have conquered Earth, writing "anti-government" graffiti on one of the aliens' public monuments. Others imitate him and eventually the aliens leave Earth, having decided humans make poor slaves. Right now we seem to be living among space aliens. . .

This too shall pass.
Someone on page one commented that this way of living is no fun. I submit that attitude is the key here, and attitude is something you have control over. If you are in the habit of participating in recreational activities that cost money, change your habits. Find something enjoyable to do that doesn't cost, or that doesn't cost after the initial investment in tools and equipment, at least. Preferably something that uses local materials, too, if materials are required. And, if possible, something useful. Lots of people do 'crafty' things that are not useful and are nothing really but clutter and dust catchers in the home. There isn't a lot of market for things like that in a poor economy. Choose something people need, or that your family needs -- fishing, for example, can help feed your family and maybe friends and neighbors, as well. Car repair and carpentry and sewing are all good choices; gardening ditto.
There are lots of possibilities, but making cheap little knick-knacks, no matter how cute, is probably not a good option. I've got a friend who takes scrap yarns and knits the most beautiful socks -- that's useful AND beautiful. Music, especially if it's what your neighbors like to listen to, is a good choice, too -- no matter how bad things get, good music lifts spirits and improves morale. If anyone needs ideas, start a thread -- I'm sure there are a lot of ideas out there.

"Armed revolt is NOT an option" Sooner or later you had best get that notion out of your head, or your future is not going to be very bright at all.

Be careful what you say on the internet. There were some old guys in North Georgia who sat around all day talking about how bad the government was and how they would like to blow crap up if they had the chance. An informant infiltrated their group and befriended them. The informant was on the news and said that for sure they had stored food and they probably had explosives. Anyhow those guys are sitting in prison now. Countrymouse can verify the story and probably add details.

More ways to fight the system:

Boycott corporations that show homosexuals in their commercials.

Don't enter the military. If you do, at least wait until a conservative is President. He will, after all, be your commander.

Don't buy lottery tickets.

I understand what you are all saying, but not everybody can just up and sell their house to get out to the rural areas. Not everybody has the wherewithal to immediately pay off their car or credit cards. All your advice is good, but given that the prep time is so short now, maybe someone should come up with a list for those not independently wealthy.

Its a lifelong process gawarriorqueen. I didn't start doing all those things at once and I may not be doing every single thing all of the time. Besides purchasing rural property, a lot of those things on the list would help you save money. Another thing to think about is the Amish. How much poorer than the Amish can you get? They get by just fine without the grid and technology.

I think that the best thing to change is your attitude. We, collectively, in the USA, have had it good for a fair number of years now. The cycle of life continues on, and our once Constitutional Republic is degenerating into a mob rule quasi-democracy and oligarchy. I went chapter 13 a few years ago, and it was a very tough time for us. However, I came out of that experience of viewing our finances differently. I don't take things so personal now. I try to make good business decisions, and I don't really give a crap what anyone else thinks. This hardened stance came after attempted brow beatings by creditors who did not give a crap that we were trying to survive on a 90% reduction in income. I am proud of the letter I got from one creditor who said that my communications with them were vulgar and non-professional. I was responding to their childish attempts to make me feel guilty about not being able to pay my debts. God forbid a business should go tits-up when their income drops......right!

I will tell you, that our bankruptcy attorney bemoaned that so many of his individual bankruptcy cases were mostly due to consumer stupidity. Ours was 'refreshing' to him, because we were not trying to get something for nothing, but were adapting to a new financial reality for ourselves. I will say that when our former Credit Union took a hit when we did a short sale of our house, I did not feel compelled NOT to share the shellacking we took on that one. I paid off all of my secured debts in one way or another. I did what I could with the non-secured. We have no un-secured debt at all now.

So, we are cash only people. If I can't cover an expense with actual in the hand money, it does not happen. Life has gotten simpler and easier.

Regarding growing Tobacco, this can be an issue that affects the health of common garden veggies.

Tobacco is part of a large botanical family

http://www.extension.umn.edu/garden/yard-garden/vegetables/tomato-tmv-disease/

The plant disease caused by tobacco mosaic virus is found worldwide. The virus is known to infect more than 150 types of herbaceous, dicotyledonous plants including many vegetables, flowers, and weeds. Infection by tobacco mosaic virus causes serious losses on several crops including tomatoes, peppers, and many ornamentals.

The most common sources of virus inoculum for tobacco mosaic virus are the debris of infected plants that remains in the soil and certain infected tobacco products that contaminate workers hands. Cigars, cigarettes, and pipe tobaccos can be infected with tobacco mosaic virus. Handling these smoking materials contaminates the hands, and subsequent handling of plants results in a transmission of the virus. Therefore, do not smoke while handling or transplanting plants.

The most common method of transferring the virus from plant to plant is on contaminated hands and tools. Workers who transplant seedlings should refrain from smoking during transplanting and wash their hands frequently and thoroughly with soap and water. Tools used in transplanting can be placed in boiling water for 5 minutes and then washed with a strong soap or detergent solution. Dipping tools in household bleach is not effective for virus decontamination.

In Minnesota, common plant hosts for the mosaic virus are tomato, pepper, petunia, snapdragon, delphinium, and marigold. Tobacco mosaic virus also has been reported to a lesser extent in muskmelon, cucumber, squash, spinach, celosia, impatiens, ground cherry, phlox, zinnia, certain types of ivy, plantain, night shade, and jimson weed.

Make you own television antenna using plans from the internet. I recommend the Stealth Hawk antenna and/or the Gray Hoverman. Cut the cable and the dish.

Self insure your home. I learned the hard way that if an insurance company doesn't approve of your roof, they can drop you.

Vote with your money when it comes to businesses. If a company has a tv commercial with homosexuals in it, give your business to another company and make them rich.

So do a lot of white people. I just paid a guy $600 cash to deliver a couple of boulders to my home to block a road that can be accessed by people I don't want to have on my property. When I mentioned cash, he said I'll be up to your house in a hour. The guy is white and owns his rig. Cash talks.
