There is just one more installment to this Christmas story, continuing beyond the ending would IMO detract from it. I'll be posting it either late tonight or sometime tomorrow. Even though this is about the tenth draft, I still want to give it one more edit.
However I do have a 2/3 completed work that is linked to the other stories and begins just after Z-Day. I'll probably start 'Children's Crusade' on tuesday.
Depressing -- a little, but most every PAW story is depressing.
What gets my interest is the glimmer of hope that's in your writing. These people never gave up hope -- even when the world was dropping on their heads. Hope perservered.
Hope wasn't really my intention, but looking back at it, it really does describe the situation quite well. They were going to walk to Cheyenne, in December, with a few feet of snow on the ground. That takes a great deal of hope, even if Google Maps says the distance is only 42 miles. (42 miles is a *long* way for a six year old though.)
Hrm... Now I'm second guessing it. Matt had hope, along with faith and perseverance. Valerie? By Christmas Eve, Valerie had made her peace with death, but she wasn't going to quit. Valerie kept going for the same reason soldiers fight. If she quit, she would let the others down. If she quit, she wouldn't be able to comfort her sister. If she quit, she would see the disappointment in Matt's eyes, and for her that would be worse than dying. She knew she was going to die anyway, so she chose to die happy, together with what was left of her family.
The last installment is from Valarie's POV, and we'll get to see that she thinks now.
Man O' Man... It just keeps getting better. Matt sees the value in helping save others like his group, plus there's a little love story evolving. Can't wait for my next feeding of this story.
Glad you like it.
I'm sure he sees the value, but he was mostly thinking of keeping everyone together.
The last little bit is intended to show a lot about what kind of place they've come to. You can contrast the place they are in now with their memories of the FEMA evacuation center they were in at the beginning of the outbreak.
As for romance, if you reread it, I'm sure you'll see hints of how they feel about each other...
