BOISE, Idaho (KBOI) - Maybe a trip to the grocery store isn't necessary after all.

The Idaho Fish and Game has released details of new rules that have taken effect that allow people to recover, possess, sell and, yes, eat certain wildlife killed by accidental vehicle collisions.

Individuals who want to salvage road kill must notify the Idaho Department of Fish and Game within 24 hours either in person, by phone or by Internet to receive a salvage permit within 72 hours.

Game animals, including furbearers, may now be salvaged, as long as they died as a result of an accidental vehicle collision. This rule change only allows dead animals to be salvaged; it does not allow injured animals to be killed by passing motorists.

Anyone who gets the OK to eat a roadkill does so at his/her own risk.

During the 2012 Idaho Legislative session, new rules were approved which allow Idaho residents to recover, posses, and sell commercially valuable wildlife that have been killed by accidental vehicle collisions.

well, works for me! I totaled a car hitting a young buck and eating him was my revenge! But, I had to get him tagged by the cops first. My SIL turned him into fabulous canned venison. Yum!

If it is a situation where one has to call the cops because of daage and insurance and all, sure you ask. Now in a case where I might be in my old Cherokk-it might have slowed e down but I'd have to decide to pull over and grab it or in the case of a hunting buddy who busted the grill, drivers side panel hitting one-he worked for Chevy so it was no big deal to have it repaired but I'm sure as hell not calling anyone if they are not there to see it anyway.

So you call or whatever, and you get your permit in 72 hours to claim your road kill ???? WTF ???? You guys got a bunch of desk/arm chair no common sense libs writing laws and running your state or what ???? Last time I hit me some road kill, I took out an elk, took photos of the elk, damages to my truck, gutted and quartered the bugger right alongside the road . permit my ass, he didn't get a permit to be on the road or have a dl, or registration, call him an uninsured . . someone ought to SUE the state for not keeping 'their' livestock under control . .

My thoughts exactly. 72 hours on the side of the road in summer? Yuck, it would be ripe and fully cooked by then.

If I hit a deer, within 72 hours a lot of it will already be 'transformed' and resting quietly in my septic tank.

Roadkill in Maine is yours for the taking if it is your vehicle involved but you need to call the cops to get a tag. No cost, just a tag to transport it. If no one claims the deer/moose, the road kill list is brought out immediately and they start calling for someone to come claim the animal unless it is really wasted and can't be used except as coyote bait and then they have a list of guys who want those. (logging trucks make a real mess of even a moose.........) ewwww or the weather is too warm and most people don't want the carcass so the coyote guys still get it or it goes to the roadkill graveyard north of here.
Large carcasses are not left by the side of the road to swell and decay like some states. DOT comes and takes em away. (that part is good. I hate seeing perfectly good food just laying there going to waste)
We have eaten a lot of roadkill in this house. Moose, deer, yum.......dogs get the messed up stuff and make zero complaints on it, lol.....
