Okay, it was about time for a new segment. Chapter 9 comprises nearly 17 pages total in Word so there'll be a bit to keep readers busy as I get it edited and posted.

RR, just wanted to let you know I've really gotten into "Patriot Aid Station". Great job! Between the news on Timebomb and y'all's stories, I'm just spending way, way too much time on the computer. Oh well, I'm enjoying it.

Look at it this way... DH & I just got back from the book store where we dropped $149 or so bucks. Whimper. Mind you retail would have been close to $400, so that's not bad.
But with Patriot Aid Station & AT's great stuff, etc. we're getting it CHEAP! Wish duct tape cost that little, not to mention water purifiers, rations, rope, seeds, antibiotics...sigh

The sad (?) part is the story is getting to the real medical side only now. The buildup has been slower than I planned simply because my wild imagination keeps coming up with new twists to work in. A doc Down Under is feeding me info on some procedures that will play an important role before long, a PA on the East Coast is advising on other aspects, and I have gathered a short ton of additional medical references to check against the info being related so as not to steer people wrong.
As far as the austere aspects of medicine being highlighted I spent 2 weeks in Central America last summer assisting with the teaching of a wilderness medicine course. Just because something is rejected by our the-supply-system-is-your-friend medical philosophy doesn't mean it won't work when there are no alternatives. Myself I'll take appropriate hi-tech any day. I do, however, know how to function without it. Proctoclysis anyone?

Good job RR. I have been following your story right along.
I am not necessarily medically minded,so your story has made me do a lot of thinking about medical situations that might occur if the SHTF and we become that 3rd world country.
Your plot keeps me going on the rest of the story too.

Sorry for the delay ladies and gentlemen. Lightening struck too close to home (literally) and fried my modem, both phones, the house phone wiring and literally blew the cover off the junction box on the outside wall. That was a week ago and I am just getting back on line with a borrowed 166.

We get so much lightning here in Florida that it's always a major concern with me.
You're doing a good job of keeping the excitement level up in your story. An interesting perspective to take. Not very much use of air power though, is there?

Just a writer's heads up if you will. I finished nursing school last month and now find I actually have time to write! 
Between the necessary side job, actual classroom/clinical time and the homework (my God the homework!) I was putting in 100 hours a week for far too long. Hence, something had to give. The story was but one.
But, as you can see I am writing again. The story has a long way to go and I hope that the renewed vigor and available time will be fruitful for everyone.

And, I guess I am glad you didn't totally follow my advice but very glad you got time to write.

Congrats on finishing school. When do you start working as a nurse? Are you going to do the immersion route and work in an inner-city ER? My aunt did that in DC at DC General and said that she learned more there then in the previous 15 years of nursing.

Deena, sorry, but my co-workers have been leaving me hanging, as in out. Like in staying over and working a double shift or even double-plus. I'm trying to crank it out as fast as I can. I am making progress. As soon as I add more to the current segment I'll post it. Probably within a few days. This morning by the time crawled into bed I had been awake for 26 hours, driven back from the northern side of the Ozarks and then worked my shift plus the following one. I may as well be back in college. 
I appreciate your interest though. Future segments will explore the medical aspect in much greater depth, augmented by some outstanding references one might think were written for the story. Yes, Virginia, there really are medical books written for establishing austere hospitals in contested areas. Not like you'd find the American Hospital Association recommending sandbagging the sides of stakebed trucks to create a mobile operating theater.

I'll be posting another segment to chapter 13 then off on a hiatus while I take my Boy Scouts to summer camp for 8 days. Sorry folks, but it has to be. I'll return on the 31st and then pick up the pen again. Hope it satisfies the cravings for a time.

Hiatus is over! I know, I know, about time, eh?
I've moved to Arizona, am getting settled in after 6 weeks or so and have found time to do some writing on my days off. Trying to add at least a few sentences every day while keeping a bit in reserve as it were. If it gets too long between installments I'll post a couple pages at least rather than the usual 4-5.

THANK YOU for bringing this back to life -- poor Leadfoot --must have been the longest healing compartment syndrome in history. Ohhh the pain -- had one patient who developed compartment syndrome when I was floated to an Ortho floor - had to convince the Doc I really DID know what I was looking at - surgey was within 45 min of my call to him....
