Clintonville to Hold Public Meeting on Booming and Tremors: Updated

Clintonville - For a second night in a row, residents on the east side of Clintonville dealt with booming and quaking that can't be explained.

The city is now calling the noises and tremors a natural phenomenon that so far can't be explained.

"Last night it would take a break for two hours then you'd hear one big boom. I would shake on my couch and everything," Joseph Clauson of Clintonville said.

The last report of noises or shaking was just after 9 A.M. as city officials started Day 2 of their investigation. At this point, that investigation has been more of a process of elimination.

The city is holding a public meeting on Wednesday at 6 P.M. at Clintonville High School to share what it's learned and let residents ask questions.

Tuesday, utility workers went to wells to make sure water mains were working properly. They say everything checked out fine, so city officials ruled out the water mains as a possible cause.

"I've done this for 35 years now and never heard of anything tied to the water system that has shown itself like this has. It's pretty unlikely, but you have to look at everything," CTW Corp. employee Tim Cummens said.

WE Energies checked gas lines again Tuesday, and everything checked out fine.

From a geological standpoint, earthquakes as well as frost quakes are not the explanation, either.

City officials are frustrated and disappointed by the lack of answers.

"People are really stumped. It's strange. It's not truly an earthquake, yet there are clearly rumblings under the ground that people feel and hear," City Administrator Lisa Kuss said.

The city plans to set up audio equipment at its utilities building so it has a record of the noises people are hearing.

"I think that we will continue to look at things and to assure people that we are not forgetting or ignoring the situation and we'll have to see if it continues each day and night," Kuss said.

This is a very interesting event. Even the experts haven't a clue as to the origin of the booms. "Frost quakes" seem to be ruled out in many reports I have read.

My pet theory is the Seneca Guns which I described earlier in the thread.

Experts Just as Confused as Residents in Clintonville

City leaders in Clintonville have been working with experts throughout the state trying to solve the mystery. And the experts are just as stumped as the residents.

"I've run out of ways to say 'I don't know,'" UW-Green Bay Geologist Steve Dutch joked at the end of our interview.

"One thing we can definitely rule out is, when it gets very cold around here we occasionally have cryogenic earthquakes, which is basically from the ground freezing and stresses building up and frozen ground shifting, and that obviously isn't going to be the case now," Dutch said.

Harold Tobin, a UW-Madison professor of fault mechanics, marine geophysics, and rock physics, is consulting with city leaders in Clintonville.

"I'm as confused as intrigued as anybody about what's going on exactly," Tobin said. "I think we can rule out that really sort of standard earthquake activity. That swarm of earthquakes is not happening in that region."

And weather experts say there's no easy solution, either.

"Well, the warm weather has occurred over all of Northeast Wisconsin, and we don't have reports of underground rumbling or shaking in any other parts of the state," Jeff Last with the National Weather Service said.

A check list of logical answers seems to be turning up dead-ends.

"The interesting thing is the U.S. Geological Survey is not seeing anything," Dutch said. "Their most recent earthquake plots -- the closest events are tiny events in Southeast Missouri and West Virginia, and they're 1,000 miles away -- and they can pick up things equivalent to a few sticks of dynamite."

What these experts agree on, for the time being, is the unknown seems to rival the known.

My husband said he heard reports that it continued throughout the day, so it's not just a night thing. I think that was true yesterday, too, as the CNN reporter in an article earlier in the thread heard the noise through the phone - and the call was made during the day.

So could it be deep, deep underground tunneling/blasting? Or have they completely been able to rule that out? TPTB are not going to tell anyone that in not "need to know", even other agencies. (like USGS and such)

That's what I was insinuating in post 70. It is very possible they do know what's going on.

Kind of hard to imagine that in Clintonville, Wisconsin, but I suppose that is exactly the kind of location they'd pick, if such a thing was really happening.

I have been thinking about that installation quite a bit today. I wonder if they picked anything up on their wideband receivers when these booms happened?

I'll probably see if I can't find a contact up there tomorrow. Today's been interesting.

Clintonville, Wis., Residents Endure Three Nights Of Unexplained 'Booms,' 'Bangs' And Noises

By Michael Billera: March 20, 2012 2:54 PM EDT

Clintonville, Wis. residents endured another night of mysterious "booms" and "bangs" that appear to be getting worse since starting on Sunday.

Residents of Clintonville, which is located approximately 40 miles west of Green Bay, have been complaining about unexplained booming noises. Police say just before 3 a.m. on Tuesday, residents in the area experienced the latest in unexplained booms. There are indications from witnesses that the booming is spreading to areas south and west of the original locations, reported WTAQ.

Clitonville, Wis. residents endured another night of mysterious "booms" and "bangs" that appear to be getting worse since starting on Sunday.

Sunday night, Clintonville police started receiving reports regarding explosions or explosion like sounds. They reportedly were receiving 50 to 60 calls at one time.

Residents don't know what to make of it.

"[It] almost felt like a heavy-duty thunderstorm," said Al Miller, according to Fox, as another resident had said that it "sounded like a bomb had gone off."

Clintonville City Administrator Lisa Kuss reportedly met with civil engineers and geologists on Tuesday morning. Officials are checking the water system to see if there are any problems. Officials are also checking gas lines, sewers and water pressure systems, but they have yet to find a source of the loud noises.

Kuss believes the noises are coming from underground, reported the AP, and the next plan is to check well pumps to make sure they are operating properly.

Some scientist agree with her.

Cliff Thurber is a geophysics professor. According to Fox, he reportedly believes that the odd booms not look like what normally happens when you have earthquakes occurring."

"The ground is shaking in an unusual way," said Thurber.

City leaders said there were no mining explosions or explosive companies in the area. The military said they were not conducting any type of weapons testing or any operation that would cause a booming sound, reported WGBA-TV.

City officials said they believe the public is safe, but if there are asking residents to contact Clintonville police department at its non-emergency number if they hear any more loud booms.

It was the Clam Lake ELF Test Facility in NW WI.

I believe it is deactivated now.

I believe that to be the case as well. My thought though is that:
  1. The equipment went somewhere.
  2. At least a few people used to listen to it in the late 1980s, when the big R was in the office, and things were still playing on the air there.

I'm betting that some still listen, and hoping that I can find someone that was over the last few days (even if it is not at the facility). We have several dozen ELF-HF "sites" here in Virginia, and around each there are plenty of people that monitor them. Northwest VA is a good example, as well as the very hidden SuperDarn site not too far from Richmond on the James River.

Someone has to still be listening, especially with all of the daily "possibilities" in the gulf right now. I know that ELF-VLF to the subs, would tell you about as much as HF to the planes as far as details, but any change in comms "quantity and frequency" tells a lot now days...

ETA: I was close, I thought it was 2005 that Clam Lake was last on the air, it was 2004.

I still haven't heard the actual sounds Clintonville experienced, but I did listen to the sounds on the video on the first page of this thread about the sounds recorded just before the Colorado earthquake.

They sound just like when the dot guv was building an underground facility of some sort near us here. Just like it!

We heard those sounds around here for nearly 2 years, only late at night, like after 2:30 am most nights and never on a Saturday night for some reason. My friend who wears her tin foil hat with pride swore what we were hearing was blasting for some underground facility, and at first I thought she was nuts, but as time went on, I began to agree.

You got so you could hear (and sometimes feel) the blasting and at other times, the creaking of heavy equipment and feel that rumble from time to time. And we both heard big trucks hauling something all night too for some of the time...weeks and weeks of it, one truck after another. Actually kept me awake. Sounded like logging trucks only heavier.

This is all in a remote mountainous (granite) area.

And there was an area in the canyon that was lit up bright. You could see a glow in the sky when coming up the mountain from the valley in the wee hours, but you couldn't see it up here on the mountain at all. Weird. Kind of like the glow in the sky from the lights of a town far off that you can barely see when driving in a deserted area in the night.

And then it all stopped. No noise, no light, nothing. This was about 15 or 20 years ago, as I recall. Then a couple years after 9/11 they did some more work up there for a few months. Now all is quiet again.

So if Clintonville sounds like that Colorado earthquake video, then my bet would be blasting/building of an underground facility of some type.

Someone needs to hire out a private geo-survey company. Have them sink some geophones around the town, and then do a couple of seismic detonations. See if they can pick up any cavities or faults in the ground under the town, and do some passive listening to see if they detect any sounds that might not carry as well as these "booms" do. I imagine the bedrock is pretty close to the surface there, so it shouldn't be difficult to hear anything that might be going on underground.

Clintonville Trembles for a Third Night

For a third night in a row, police are receiving calls from residents who are reporting the mysterious booming and shaking in Clintonville, but the source remains a mystery for residents and experts alike.

City officials say they received around 150 reports about the noises from underground shaking their houses Sunday night into Monday morning in the northeast corner of town.

The next night, they received another 100 calls starting around 8 P.M.

Tuesday, the Clintonville Police Department said calls began coming in again at 8:07 P.M.

For residents, it's a situation that's very unsettling.

"They're pretty loud when they vibrate the windows and you can feel the vibration on the floor and on the ground," Verda Schultz said.

The occurrences have led city engineers to do a thorough investigation. So far they've ruled out problems with the water and sewer system, elevated gas levels, area blasting or mining, industrial businesses, and even military operations.

"I think that right now the greatest possibility is that it is some sort of natural phenomenon. I think that it's a possibility that there is some earth shifting going on underneath the ground that creates those popping sort of exploding popping or vibrating noises that people feel," City Administrator Lisa Kuss said.

Tuesday the city set up audio and video surveillance to monitor the booms, and scheduled a public meeting Wednesday at 6 P.M. at the high school where city officials will share all that they've learned and answer residents' questions.

Some residents are leaving town.

"Our dog is scared, our neighbors are leaving and stuff, so we decided we are going somewhere else for a while," Dennis Padia said. "It's that loud, and it bothers you.

You can't go to sleep."

"It freaks you out a lot. No one knows what it is. You call the city officials and they tell you they don't know. Fear of the unknown, right?" Carrie Wnuk said.

Here is what I think. Many of these events have been reported around the world and strongly near latitude 45. There seems to be a core shift happening. We know for a fact that the magnetic north pole is moving into Siberia. This would be an indication that the internal core is rotating off axis from the crust. It seems that the core may not be perfectly round or molten, and that there are hot points of contact... the 45 degree latitude being one of them. In the northern hemisphere, watch: Aleutian Islands, Kiev, London. On the opposite side of the globe we have areas like New Zealand and Chile.

Interesting you should mention the Aleutians. While Alaska is such a big state that the Aleutians are hundreds of miles from here but we are still on the ring of fire here. This morings quake here, well by now it is tomorrow , so yesterday morings quake here (only 5 miles away) was VERY LOUD! and not the first quake I have heard! as I posted on the thread on the Mexico quake:
The one here this moring was only a 3.6 but was just 5 miles from here in Sterling Alaska.
What we thought was strange was how LOUD it was! A few roofs in the area have collapsed so we thought it was maybe the house next door since our roof had already been shoveled. When we couldn't find an explanation for the noise we checked and sure enough, it was a quake.

That was the second time we HEARD one. The other time we were sleeping on a boat anchored in a bay. It woke us up and lasted quite a while. Once we were sure that we were still anchored and not drifting out to the gulf again(that's another long story) or drifted into the shipping lanes with freighters on their way up the inlet my husband thought that there had been an avalanche(it was late spring) on the mountain we were anchored in front of. But once I mentioned that I thought it was a quake that was the end of sleep for the night! We were not in cell range to call anyone and it was too black out to watch for ice and rocks.

Because my husband went through the 1964 9.2 in Anchorage AK and remembers VIVIDLY all the damage and tsunami's he sat there with a spot light pointed at the shore for an hour to make sure the water did not leave the bay! As soon as it was light enough we motored out of the bay and called the house. Turns out we were right at the epicenter! They are erie as heck when you hear them!

methane release from deep underground? Some of the descriptions are starting to sound like those given about hte NMSZ quake back in 1811, loud booming noises, strange odors, slumping grounds, mystery cracks opening up in the ground, lake levels dropping, wells going dry, springs appearing out of no where.

I have had cause to drive through this town and the immediate area regularly for the past few years, and I can assure you that there is no sign of any heavy equipment, trucks, workers, new roads, etc, that you would expect if there were any deep construction going on there.

Also, the night before, you could hear lots of strange rumbles, thumps, and weird sounds 25 miles away from Clintonville..

As I have said on the board before, EVERYBODY needs to go around their house, and make sure that things that COULD fall over or off of shelves, CAN'T. I would also make sure that you have flashlights and other things ready and nearby.

After the quake last year that we had here, I have been working on "float" mounting all of the batteries for all of my solar power systems that I use. If we get a strong enough quake here (and I DO believe that the big one we had last year was a fore-shock (precursor quake) of a bigger one yet to come, I don't want cracked lead plates in my batteries.

There seems to be quite a bit of things to think about and plan for...

Clintonville noises: City equipment fails to tape mystery sounds

12:59 PM, Mar. 21, 2012

CLINTONVILLE — Officials are trying to record a series of mysterious booming sounds that have roused residents from bed in the past few days, but their attempts have come up empty.

The city of Clintonville set up audio and video recorders overnight Wednesday but didn’t capture anything. There was at least one loud boom at 5 a.m.

City administrator Lisa Kuss says most theories involving manmade causes have been ruled out. She says the city is planning to bring in some sort of vibration-detection devices to try to determine where the epicenter is.

The booms started Sunday. Residents describe them as sounding like thunder, fireworks or someone slamming a heavy door.

The city will hold a meeting Wednesday evening to update residents on the investigation.

:shkr:

I wonder--someone mentioned the Colorado noises above, in connection with an underground complex.

After watching that tape many times, I personally don't believe that is the case. Here's why:

You hear the doppler effect in that tape. Whatever is causing the noise, it is MOVING.

At first, you hear the booming noise relatively softly, and spaced farther apart. But EACH successive "BOOM!" is LOUDER than the one preceding it, until you get to the very LOUDEST one that sounds like it is right on TOP of where the hikers are standing. At that point, you will notice the "booms" have gotten closer and closer together as far as the time intervals in between, such that the "nearest" boom follows almost immediately on the heels on the one before it---just as it would sound if what we are hearing is a moving "wave" of forces following a vein or fault deep within the earth. Then the sound intensity begins to diminish, and the distance between the "booms" again increases, as the "wave" appears to be moving on down the mountain ridge.

I personally think what that was, was a deep layer or strata of rock CRACKING (not moving, as in an earthquake--just cracking under stress)---and I believe it was a LONG vein of rock, so that the rock at one end began splitting or cracking, and then as the split or crack continued on down the vein under the earth, you would hear each successive are of rock as the stresses were passed down it--boom! Boom! Boom!! BOOM! BOOM!!! BOOM! Boom!! Boom! Boom...Boom...

It reminds me -- in slow motion -- of what I've seen happen in much faster time when a tree branch cracks and breaks off, or a log is being split, or a piece of wood ripped.

Whoa---LISTEN to the young lady above.

The reporter asked her how loud the booms were "on a scale", and she said, "It varied. Sometimes it was quiet, and then there were loud ones---IT SEEMED LIKE IT WAS TRAVELING."
