OT/MISC Saved 5 lives tonight

Well, before you get all excited --- they were newborn puppies. Being retired as an RN, my vet has let me be in the OR when ever one of my dogs had to have surgery and slowly they have let me do more and more to assist. The last major tumor removal from my old girl who died last fall, I was dong the anesthesia on her by myself (with guidance from the Doc - not trained on the anesthesia machine except ojt).

About 1230 this morning the on call vet called me and asked if I was able to come help him with an emergency c-section on a dog and when I got there, was told I was in charge of resuscitating the puppies. He did a standard spay and then handed me the uterus with the puppies still in it. While he was working on the Mom.

I pulled the pups all 5 of them and began resuscitation - none of them looked alive and neither of us had much hope of resuscitation because of the time the mom had been in labor with the first pup stuck. I triaged and began working on the pups one by one but all at the same time - trying to get them breathing. One by one as each one started trying to breathe, I would work on that one and then have to switch to the next one. Can't just work on one have to get all 5 treated at once. Usually you will have one tech per pup. None of the pups even tried to take a breath.

Four of them came around fairly quickly but the 5th was the runt and the one stuck in the birth canal. Its lungs were full of fluid and I was having to suction and actually swing the pup to get the fluid out. I refused to give up on that one because it kept trying to take a breath - as long as it was trying I would do everything I could. Finally got enough air in the lungs it started to mew - then cry then move around.

The other 4 pups by then were active and crawling looking for Mom.

When I left, the Mom was awake and all 5 pups were nursing. She has an IV and 5 pups.

There are no words to explain how humble I feel and elated. The miracle of birth is just that --- a MIRACLE. I wish everyone could witness or even better assist.

I also found out for sure that retiring from nursing was the right thing to do - my back is too screwed up to even do what I did tonight more often than very occasionally. I was in pain to the point even with max pain and anti-spasmodic meds I slept for about an hour then pain woke me up. That is the bummer - I don't like being disabled and this really brought it home to me. Frustrating!

But there were 5 pups alive who would not have been had I not gone in. The owners of the dogs were ecstatic they were afraid the would loose the mom and all puppies. Sometimes the pain is worth it.

Don't have any idea how many will survive the night - that is in God's hands - but the Doc and I did every thing we could to medically ensure, using the gifts and training God allowed us to have, to allow His will be done.

Sorry for being so OT but had to vent and let someone know what happened and 5AM is not the time to call friends.

Great story Dusty...thanks for sharing!! Even if one is disabled God can still use that person and you are proof positive. You may be in pain for a few days because of the effort but I'm sure you feel that even if one or two of the pups survives then it was worth it.

Glad you were able to assist DustMusher.

When we were raising goats, I discovered the "swing" works pretty good. We had one particular doe kid that was named Charlotte Johnson (country song, 'Just a Swingin') because of the extreme measures it took to resuscitate her. She was a little...ah, slow after that. Not sure if that was from being oxygen deprived for so long or from being swung so enthusiastically that she would have landed in the next county if I'd lost my grip. A friend has her now and Charlotte Johnson is 15 yrs old and still dropping twins every spring.

May these pups live just as long and happily as she has.

Great job DustMusher!

Years ago I took a p/t job at a vet office. When there were problems like this even those of us in the office would be called to "swing" the puppies. I can still feel the excitement of life as each puppy took a good breath. Some things you don't forget!

Wonderful story. Yes, being able to assist and winning one like that really makes you feel humble and exalted all at the same time.

If the pups were all nursing, they should all do just fine. Newborns of almost every species are such an odd combination of extreme fragility and amazing toughness.

Being disabled sucks... believe me, I know. But I think for some of us, it's the only way God can get us to slow down long enough to listen to Him!

You did good.

Cudo's to you DM. Love it.

Get some rest now but if you find out any news on the mom and pups, please let us know.

BTW, what kind of dogs are they? Breed?

Big or small breed?

Wonderful!!!! Just for future reference...but you probably already know...you can use Doxapram (Dopram) under the tongue to kick start the respiratory system. Works like a charm!

I just love happy puppy stories. Thanks for sharing. Brings back fond memories of my younger years working for the vet...and breeding litters.

Thanks, y'all for understanding. The Mom was miniature poodelish looking schnauzer and no idea what dad was. Called the Vet Clinic this afternoon and Mom and all 5 pups went home.

Willow yes we did use Doxapram -- just a few drops worked for most of the pups - along with a LOT of stinulation, but the one pup which had the most fluid in the lungs and was 'swingin' a lot we actually overdosed with the Doxapram - I had hit the max and we had gotten all the fluid out we could from the lungs and the lungs still hadn't filled I looked at him and said any more Doxapram and we will be overdosing -- but the alternative is we will loose her. That last 3 drops did the turn around.

Sorry for not responding earier - I slept most of the day -- feel better tonight. But hear an early bedtime calling.

What a great story DustMusher. You were an angel to these pups. Thank God you were able to go and help. These are the kinds of threads that give us that good feeling inside.

Take care and God Bless!

You help five innocents get their shot at life and I'm sure they will bring great joy to their future families who adopt them. Very good DM.

Thanks for the good report, DustMusher.

For a moment there I thought you had subdued a $hit eating dog in the White House.

I thank yo =u all for the comments but I was not bragging -- I just wanted to share that all of us can use the skills and gifts we have been given to make a difference. The pups are still doing fine, but the joy of the owners when they were just hoping that the life of their dog, Emmie could be saved and got the gift of all 5 pups. The call was a gift from God to me as I was feeling a little bit like I was just keeping time by not working any more (almost entering a pity party on feeling not needed - too typical of retired people) when I got the message that Yes, I still can make a difference.

I wish all of you can hear the call when it comes, and recognize how you DO make a difference in the lives of others - just take the opportunity to help when it presents itself. Not all the help is as dramatic as riding in on a white horse to save lives - human or animal - but to improve other's lives be it some advice or even a smile and a friendly hello. The small acts I realize are the ones, done when you don't even know you are doing anything but acting nice to others, may be just what that person needs at that minute.

Great story! To be a part of a miracle is a wonderful feeling. No wonder the Vet called you. I'm proud of you. :)
