So on Ard????????s' thread about cloves: http://www.timebomb2000.com/vb/showthread.php?t=360568 I go t to thinking about the people who work for the gov on any level and how top heavy the current administration (not obama, jsut the job of administering all these rules and regs.. and got to wondering.. what percent of us work for the gov at any level? No, it doesn't have to be your full time job, and contractors doing jobs for the govt such as construction or working for other companies are exempt.. but Military, state, federal, and even part time local city/ borough/ county employees or officials. Also to emphasize, this is no flame or bi-partisan... My dad and brother are both state workers, and I wouldn't turn down a good job with beni's in this economy, but please answer and see if we can get a tall or percent.. Also I'll make the options so we can try and see some other employ stats from this as well. Thanks for taking the time.. And thanks to all of you who ARE working for the govt, specifically the miltary, but other branches as well, that are trying to make a difference!

I made the "who voted what" private in case anybody thinks that would be cause not to disclose they're fed, or whatever status. Hope to gets some good results... I still think we'll have a lower # of governemnt workers than a random slice of the population, but still will be interesting to see!

I've been doing contracting work for the DOD, both CONUS and OCONUS, for the last 3 years. Frankly, its where the money is at.

Neither here nor there.
Mass transit that is contracted by the local city gov. it doesn't pay as much as most think it should.

When one of my students explained to me that I was rich because OC drives a bus I asked her how much she thought he made, when i explained that AFTER 30 years he finally broke 40k she just about fell through the floor!

She thought, in her uneducated ignorance she's a social worker btw with a PhD working at a local community college bearly breaking 28k, she told me she thought he was making 200k.

As IF!!! I wish!

Nope the general attitude where OC works is any idiot can drive a bus so therefore we don't need to pay you anymore than this. I also foresee a salary drop in the very near future as our city tries to save money and cut expenses, yet more people than ever are taking the bus to work.

If an idiot that is text messaging should walk off the curb and get crushed by the bus the city dumps the employee and they are ON their OWN, typically going to prison for man slaughter if the pedestrian is killed, or on lesser charges if the pedestrian isn't killed but only maimed.

Yeah baby that's where the money is at. This is central Iowa btw.

I think the numbers of people who THINK that they DON'T work for a
Non-government International Corporation
are very low.

Some people need to wake up and smell the CORPORATE coffee and follow the money.

I'm a retired teacher and now do some limited work throughout the year for the State Education Dept. (No benefits from SED)
Have to say I make more $$ doing the limited work per day than substituting at the school!

i voted self-employed thinking that was a non-government option, and then realized you meant those who are self-employed who do contract work for a government entity, and i thought, "oh darn, i shouldn't have voted that one"

-but then, suddenly realized that that's exactly what i should have voted because in fact a significant portion of my work is contract work for the town i live in... huh. whatdayaknow.

Interesting poll. Around 30% work for .gov in some capacity.

18+% unemployed; would that include retired/not seeking work? Poll is not scientific. Interesting, nonetheless.

yes, apologies for the mixed-medium very unscientific poll, jsut wanted a rough estimate, heard somewhere in the 40-50% could be working for the govt in some capacity, that leaves roughly 50% remaining, of workers for productivity.. not a flame, jsut a case study. I didn't account for "retired" and where do they fit in? well, for the intentions of the poll if you're retired civillian than you would be "unemployed" or basically not contributing to productivity, but also not taking from (sorry to put it that way..) but if you're retired military or .gov, then, again for the purposes of the intent of the poll, you would be .gov, even though you're not still employed and are taking from... again, I cant stress enough not trying to flame or deride those in that category.. jsut trying to get the jist. I know anyone who retired with pension from any field worked for it and is considered due-compensation, but jsut trying to explain the thinking behind this very unscientific poll.
As far as the "other" category.. if you're not working in some way for the .gov at some level... then thats kinda wayside info, the other categories were tossed in kinda as an afterthought to get a little more break-down info into the employ stats of the people here... which I assume to be a-typical to any other random slice of society. Several years ago I read that 10% of americans are self employed, our number here is showing twice that, which I would expect, of course, after the recession, I'm betting the national average did go up significantly. Thanks to those who've replied.. it will get more accurate with more responses... kinda surprised how few military chimed in... even our shadow cia, fbi & atf guys contributed... thanks yallz:wvflg::kaid:

I work for a private company that owes its existence to the complexities of the IRS code....

and of course, I personally work about 261 days a year for the government:

...the nationwide average, Americans spent the first 104 days (January 1st until April 4th) working to pay for out-of-control federal spending, the next 52 days (April 5th to May 28th) for state and local spending, the next 48 days (to July 14th) to pay for government regulations, and then 26 days for state and local regulations.

Multiple choice. I love it. Over the decades:

State Government? (or State LEO/ Military?) (VDES)
Federal Military? (Two R&D labs)
Non-government International Corporation? (DEC)
Non-government National Corporation? (A few)
Locally owned business? (A few)
Self employed? (My own companies)
Unemployed? (Retired (gone gray) now)

I think we have all run the gamut.

I'm a rural letter carrier so I work for the federal gov. However, we are NOT funded by the taxpayer but make our money from the sale of goods and services.

uh, I think there's several threads on here about the USPS running a continuous deficit, like every other .fed run govt or anythign they touch. Are you usps? They talked about cancelling saturday delivery, and raising stamp prices, again.

You didn't leave room for government retirees like me. I don't work for the government any more, they just pay me ( for the time being- I don't expect it to last much longer).
