…… Need to sell on ebay; need tips

The time has come. Some lucky doll collector is about to get a very good haul at a low price, especially if one likes Shirley Temple.

It has been ages since I bought one thing on ebay much less sold. Can anyone here who has some savy on ebay help me out please?

I understand that it is ALL paypal only and further, that ebay will be turning in all records of all transactions to the IRS next year. Is that so?

Thanks in advance, folks!

Let me know when you list them!! I love dolls! I am still buying from sellers by money order. EBay says you have to accept Paypal, but you don't.

If you haven't had an eBay account for long OR your feedback count is low, AND you're selling something for a lot of money, you may not get a buyer because they don't trust you. There are lots of scammers on eBay. And yes, you need a PP account.

Oh, our feedback tally is pretty high from WAAAAAYYYY back in the good ol' days so no probs there. Account is still active too.

I notice a lot of folks selling on ebay are doing a "buy it now" or they are setting the initial bid at the price they would initially accept.

Maybe spend a week or so lurking on the sites you would be selling on? And doing a lot of "watching" so you can see what the market is doing?

And, I don't think this is quite the right time. Wait until after Labor Day, and if you can, after Halloween....then Christmas gets really big...and maybe folks' wallets will get loose!

Check out the Community Boards over at eBay, especially Dolls and PayPal.

If your accounts are just open and you haven't had activity for a couple years, you won't be considered active. Things have changed. PayPal may well hold your money until after your buyer leaves positive feedback.

Forms of payment other than PayPal are allowed, but good luck getting another provider to show up and be active in your listings. EBay says this other one works, but I couldn't get it to go active in my eBay account. I think it was ProPay but don't remember the name for sure.

There are other marketplaces out there. Bonanzle is doing well, is friendly, has great support, no listing fees, low final value fees, is easy to use, and has a strong helpful community. The sellers there just had a big Christmas in July promotion and are about to launch another promotion. I don't like commercializing religion, pfft, just a stick in the mud that way and certainly seem to be in the minority. Bonanzle uses a fixed price format with a Best Offer option. Some run live auctions in the chat window in their booths. That takes a lot of promotion to be effective.

If you have something that likely to attract many bidders in auction, eBay may get you the better price. If your items aren't likely to attract multiple bidders, Bonanzle will save you costs and be much less of a headache.

Yes, PayPal will keep your money for 30 days or more, but only when you sell on eBay. And they won't tell you why they do it. They'll just give you some generic crap about it be standard policy for the good of the community.

Ebay also does this. If they think your item won't sell or you may be a scammer or you don't have a recent track record of successful sales with good feedback, they likely will not allow your item to be shown in search and will never let you know. But, yep, they take your listing fees. All you are left with is sitting there wondering why no one is clicking on your auctions. Your reputation before you went inactive doesn't mean jack to them.

Check out www.etsy.com

You can sell crafts and supplies there, but also vintage (20 years and older). It's not an auction, but more upscale and artsy than Ebay.

I dumped my eBay account. I'm no expert but two changes seemed to have occurred:
  • The process is now biased *against* sellers (something about the feedback process)
  • The tax-man now watches eBay

Thanks everyone for the tips!

Yeah, that is a GOOD idea about waiting until after Labor Day. What I have to sell would make some swell Christmas gifts for a beginning doll collector, especially if you are into iconic dolls such as Shirley Temple or Madame Alexander.

Thanks too for the alternative auction sites. Will check them out.

I have recently found etsy and I love it! I am not a seller there, but am seriously thinking of opening a shop with them. I did notice one shop owner who stated she/he would only accept check or money orders. This could work for you minkykat.

Here are a couple links to etsy's seller info:

Good luck and let us know how you fare!

The process is definitely biased against sellers. THe buyer can do a rating system now and if you fall below a certain level you cant sell. I had this happen to me. The last time I sold I did a dutch Buy it now and everyone left positive feedback but apparently one of them rated me low on shipping speed and that locked my account for 30 days. There is no adjudication and it is anonymous so I couldnt even contact the buyer to find out what was wrong. The fees have increased and they require the use of Paypal.

If you run a search at Google Shopping for your dolls and that type of dolls, you can see which online storefronts are offering the most of them. That's one way to check traffic in your area.

Google Checkout is a good alternative. They pay into your accounts a little quicker than PayPal does and there is no BS. PayPal only shows that a buyer is verified. Google Checkout shows a few levels of the verification process. I caught a buyer's mistake with his address by the extra information Google Checkout offers. The fees are more reasonable, too.

eBay may give you a quicker sale, and they have the most buyers by far.

PayPal may have a pre-verification process so your funds would not be held. I don't know.
