Authorities Fear Eruption of Galeras Volcano

Authorities and inhabitants in the south of Colombia fear an eruption of the Galeras volcano after four tremors shook the area on Sunday and Monday.

According to the volcanic observatory run by Colombia's Geology and Mining authority Ingeominas, the several tremors are related to the activity of the volcano and an eruption is likely within days or weeks.
The quakes took place in the area surrounding the active volcano just outside the city of Pasto.

Ingeominas says it continues to be alert to the volcanic phenomena and will report changes.

The Galeras volcano erupted last in January, after which 8,000 people were forced to evacuate.

Colombians evacuated as Galeras volcano erupts

BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) - The Galeras volcano is erupting in southwestern Colombia, forcing scores of people to evacuate from their homes.

Marta Calvache of Colombia's Geology and Mining Institute says a burst of gases, ash and vapor rose from the volcano at about 4 a.m. (0900 GMT) on Wednesday. The mountain's peak is 14,029 feet (4,276 meters) above sea level.

Carlos Ivan Marquez of the Colombian Red Cross says 278 people have evacuated from the area around the volcano.

He says so far there are no reports of damage.

Here's an update on Galeras for August 26th it appears that it has erupted.
