TECH Heads up! Limewire virus

I picked up a terrible computer virus from a Limewire download this past Sat. Forwarded it to a friend. Both of us now have to get new computers. He had even more sophisticated virus/malware programs than me. Local service tech said at least $200 to repair the old computer, and that he loves Limewire because of the business it brings in.

$200 to repair a computer that got a virus? You might want to get a second opinion on that.

$200 is too steep for a virus removal. They probably have a tool that wipes it out in a few minutes and after a couple of tweaks they SHOULD be done in an hour if they know so much about that particular virus.

Now if they have to wipe the drive that's another story because it takes time to do that and reload the users files, that could take more than 2 hours and once you start going past 2 hours $200 isn't hard to reach with onsite IT services. If you are bringing them the computer and they will do it at their leisure then again $200 might be a little steep but it really depends on how many man hours are involved in the end.

Ya Dex. Said he had to wipe it and add new Norton. My HP was four years old, worked fine untill this, but Dakota PC.com has a bigger more advanced computer for $299.

Install boot into safe mode F8 before the windows screen comes up and run both of them and should get rid of it. FOR FREE!

Try running a program called ComboFix. I've used it on computers at work and it (Combofix) completely removed the viruses and returned the computer to a normal working state.

Depending on what virus it really was Combofix is good but there is no single tool that gets everything.

I use:

ComboFix
Spybot Search and Destroy
Ad-Aware
And whatever AntiVirus is handy
Trend-Micro's Housecall if they do not have an Antivirus already installed, otherwise Avast or AVG typically.

I scan any infected computers with all of the above, in the order listed above. Sometimes I have to add CCleaner to the mix as well.

Not to mention, getting into MSCONFIG, REGEDIT and TASK MANAGER to make sure there still aren't other things lurking.

Before doing ANY of this I back up the customer's computer to an external 1TB USB drive.

After cleaning up the virus problems, I also then do a complete disk clean, removing all temp files, dump files, etc. followed by a series of defrag's until defrag has nothing left to move or compress.

With the customer's permission I also bring all Windows Updates current, make sure they have the latest drivers and firmware updates, Antivirus is installed and working, etc.

When they come to pick up the machine or if I deliver it or if I do all of this onsite, I show them how to run, update and scan using the tools above so they can do this themselves as necessary....but most of them never do...they just bring it back to me to do every 6 months or so.

I charge $129/hour, same as the local Geek Squad and I have a policy that if you do not like my work or think it was not worth it, then you don't owe me a dime. First time customers get the first hour free. Most of my customers become repeat customers.

Typical bill is for 2-4 hours...sometimes more. I have had two people in 10 years take me up on my offer of not paying if it wasn't worth it. Most have been multiple repeat customers. There is rarely a week goes by that I don't have at least one or more virus-infested computers dropped by to be worked on.

In a decent sized town like St. Louis, you can actually make a decent living doing this if you get well-known among the right people.

The only time I used Limewire, I had 3-4 viruses try to attack my computer within the first 5 minutes. I was using McAfee at the time & luckily it blocked them. Needless to say, I never use Limewire. That site is known to be full of nasty viruses, it is a cesspool. I only buy music now from reputable places like iTunes & Rhapsody.

Limewire is a file sharing program. And ya, file sharing as in illegal file sharing of music and movies. Won't get into the morality on that but some people like free stuff. I don't mind free stuff too but don't sugar coat it. Piracy is piracy.

Limewire is risky. I had it for a while and was a pirate too but turfed it because of several bad hits. Luckily, my virus scans picked them up each time.

I just do itunes now and pay a reasonable price for good quality music. It works for us since we all have ipods and such. Virus free and worry free.
