Israel warns Syria it would lose future war

JERUSALEM -- Israel's foreign minister harshly warned Syria Thursday against drawing the Jewish state into another war, saying its troops would be trounced and its regime would collapse in a future conflict.

Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman also advised Syria to abandon its dreams of recovering the Israeli-held Golan Heights in a speech that ratcheted up simmering political tensions between the two foes.

The exceptionally harsh words followed Syrian President Bashar Assad's accusation on Wednesday that Israel was the one avoiding peace, and his foreign minister earlier threat that Israel's cities would be attacked in a future conflict.

The Syrians "have crossed a red line that cannot be ignored," Lieberman said in a speech at a Tel Aviv-area university.

"Our message must be clear to Assad: 'In the next war, not only will you lose but you and your family will lose power,'" he added

Lieberman's bellicose language contrasted sharply with the statement Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued late Wednesday, saying the Jewish state seeks peace. It said Netanyahu "would be willing to go anywhere in the world, and doesn't rule out any assistance by a fair third party, to promote the political process in order to begin peace talks with Syria without any preconditions."

Syria demands the return of the Golan Heights - the strategic plateau Israel captured in the 1967 Mideast war - as the price of any deal.

But Lieberman, echoing Netanyahu's position, said there would be no such thing.

"We must make Syria recognize that just as it relinquished its dream of a greater Syria that controls Lebanon ... it will have to relinquish its ultimate demand regarding the Golan Heights," Lieberman said.

There was no immediate comment from Syrian officials to Lieberman's remarks.

Several rounds of indirect peace talks between Syria and Israel in 2008 ended without a breakthrough. Damascus has expressed interest in having Turkey resume its mediation role, but Israel and Turkey have clashed diplomatically since Israel's war in Gaza last winter, and Israeli officials have said they no longer consider Turkey to be an honest broker.

Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak warned earlier this week that absence of peacemaking with Syria could result in a regional war.

Israel pushing Middle East to war: Syria's Assad

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/02/03/AR2010020302709.html

DAMASCUS (Reuters) - Syria accused Israel on Wednesday of pushing the Middle East toward a new war.

"All the facts point that Israel is driving the region toward war, not peace," the official Syrian news agency quoted Syrian President Bashar al-Assad as saying during a meeting with Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos.

"Israel is not serious about wanting peace," he added.

Moratinos, recently returned from a visit to Israel, said the Jewish state did not appear to want war.

"I came from Israel. I didn't hear any noise of drums of war. I heard drums of peace," he said.

During a subsequent news conference with Moratinos, Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moualem said Israel "was planting the seeds of the war atmosphere" by threatening attacks on Iran, Lebanon and the Gaza strip.

"I tell them (Israel), stop acting like thugs," Moualem told reporters in the Syrian capital Damascus.

Indirect peace talks between Syria and Israel, mediated by Turkey, broke down during the Israeli invasion of Gaza in December 2008.

Syria has sought to resume the talks as the confrontation between its ally Iran and the West and Israel over Tehran's nuclear activities escalated.

Syrian officials have made it clear that Syria preferred not to be drawn into any military confrontation involving Iran if Israel attacked Iran's nuclear installations.

"Do not test the resolve of Syria, you Israelis, you know that war this time will reach your cities. Go back to your senses and seek the road of peace," Moualem said.

Damascus wants an Israeli commitment to withdraw from the whole of the Golan Heights, the Syrian plateau that Israel occupied in the 1967 Middle East War. Israel has said it was willing to resume the talks with Syria without preconditions.

A lot of jabber jawing, posturing, saber rattling and strategic positioning going on in that region. With the build up in the gulf and additions to the troops in Afgan, plus Iran on edge and now this. At this pace someone is going to accidently cause the ignition of a huge fire storm. Maybe even WW3. Make sure your preps are covered and be vigilant. Who knows how all this is going to play out.

I hope not, but you may be right about Damascus. After the horrors of the Holocaust, Israel will never again tolerate being gassed by anyone, and Syria is quite capable of trying it. Most of the terrorist groups' head offices are there...

Ahem... Isaiah 17.

Jeremiah 49:23-27 (New King James Version)

23 Against Damascus.

“ Hamath and Arpad are shamed,
For they have heard bad news.
They are fainthearted;
There istrouble on the sea;
It cannot be quiet.
24 Damascus has grown feeble;
She turns to flee,
And fear has seized her.
Anguish and sorrows have taken her like a woman in labor.
25 Why is the city of praise not deserted, the city of My joy?
26 Therefore her young men shall fall in her streets,
And all the men of war shall be cut off in that day,” says the LORD of hosts.
27 “ I will kindle a fire in the wall of Damascus,
And it shall consume the palaces of Ben-Hadad.”[e]

You know those nukes that Israel DOESN'T have... ;)

The Golan Heights only has value to the Syrians as a launching platform for lobbing missiles and rockets into Israeli settlements just below the Golan.

In FACT, that's what the Golan was used for BY the Syrians for decades until the 1967 war.

Chem warheads will be the determining factor in how conflict progresses. Israel would not in the least tolerate any chem attack in light of their history with bad gas. They would glass any perps, both the launch party as well as the suppliers. Syria must know this and must be real nervous about zealous Hizzies or Hamas getting their rocks off. In Gulf War One, the US had to fiercely hold down the IDF from going Sampson as Iraq lobbed Scuds. The word then was if any of those scuds delivered chem ordnance, Bagdad would be glass within the hour. BHO must be chitting sideways over such a scenario, if merely to spell the end of his social experiment.

I stand corrected, thanks!

Bottom line: All of God's Word has and will happen just as He said. How gracious of Him, Who knows the end from the beginning, to share with us through His prophets and watchmen what is to come. And how exciting to be alive at a time when much of it appears to be coming to fruition! :angl:

Correct. That is why I doubt Israel will ever return it to Syria.
And I hope they don't!

Ezekiel 37 on the horizon. Buh bye Damascas.

Maybe.

And as I've been warning for almost 20 years since my 'apocalyptic vision', buh bye America and Western civilization. What nation do you think is the 'Mother of Harlots' whose sins pile up to heaven that is destroyed by fire in an hour's time?

Not quite as entertaining when you become the target of God's judgment, is it...
