Hi, I"m Lisa Rogers, an RN from northern NJ. Have been reading TB2K since 99 or 98 + participated on the chat back then as "sail" or "Lisa R." Was taking care of a 100% service connected disabled vet father at the time. Hubby was involved in computer industry as unix system administrator. Having income at that time and space for storage, we stocked up greatly thinking the "worst" would happen. It did. My husband was laid off work then 9/11 happened. We live within 500 feet of a direct Ground Zero view, just up the hill from us. My father also passed away in August of 1999. Having lost income brought in by Dad thru SS and VA pensions, and my husband's six figure income job, we went into survival mode. My father's rooms, a seperate legal apartment, were rented out to pay property taxes. We had a roomate in the attic bedroom who also contributed. And we had enough foodstuff in storage and cut our spending to almost nothing. My husband worked lousy warehouse, loading truck type jobs whenever he could get them until he got a telecom industry computer type job for a few months in early 2004. While he did get maximum unemployment, it did not last long. In late 2005, he got a job paying 1/5 of what he earned in 1999, but the commute is less than 1 mile from our house instead of all the way into NYC. This job is with a business that sells truck parts to trucking firms that deliver to the local big box + food stores. So far it is still in business and supplies us with health insurance, or we would have lost our home. Even though I am an RN by training, I am disabled from chronic pain from a serious back injury. In 2008, I had 2 minor cardiac infarctions and surgical removal of a thyroid tumour. For some earning power, I help manage a large apartment building by being on call for emergencies and repairs. Now I am recovering from a broken water pipe from second floor apt where I live along with the bathroom remodel from hell. When the water supply pipe broke, I slipped down a flight of stairs on the way to the basement to the water supply shut off valve. I fractured my left collarbone and dislocated my left shoulder, hit my head causing a concussion, broken glasses, and missing teeth. My bathroom still does not have a working toilet, but it does have a working bathtub and shower. I have a funny feeling we will be finishing the bathroom ourselves installing the floor tile, sink, toilet, and other accessories. I know how to do this. My disabled father had me painting and fixing leaky faucets at age 10 and doing all house maintenance at age 12. Getting a gas powered lawn mower for your 14th birthday was the sort of thing my parents did to me. My mom had me doing janitor work at age 7 at the tennis club she managed. As long as I could handle a broom, scrub sinks, toilet, and tiles, and mop a floor, I could make good money for my allowance. I am trying to recover enough to get the house in shape to put up for sale early next spring. We have friends with land in upstate NY who are not in the best shape themselves physically and have to get out of a rental apartment in NYC. I figure we can help each other. I have a truck and a van. They have over 300 acres and don't drive, but my husband and I do. My husband and I have experience with extensive square foot vegatable gardening, over 1000 square feet on a city lot for over ten years and have alot of tools. All four of us were raised by parents or grandparents who survived the depression and were experienced with making it last. My mom was the only working mother in my class of kids who owned her own home. Any ideas out there for us?
