Jackson joins call for more attention to recession's impact on black Americans

The Rev. Jesse Jackson has joined black lawmakers in their push to get the White House to do more to directly help African American communities disproportionately hurt by the nation's severe economic recession.

Jackson, who noted that he was not invited to President Obama's recent jobs summit, said he has requested a meeting with Treasury Secretary Timothy F. Geithner to talk about economic aid for depressed minority communities. No meeting has been set.

In recent days, Obama has pushed back at the idea that his administration should focus economic revitalization policies on specific ethnic and racial groups. In an interview with USA Today and the Detroit Free Press last week, the president said, "The most important thing I can do for the African American community is the same thing I can do for the American community, period, and that is get the economy going again and get people hiring again."

Press secretary Robert Gibbs also told reporters that the purpose of the jobs summit was to get "ideas from a whole host of people in the private sector -- people that run fairly large companies, like FedEx, Google; small business owners that -- the engine of our economy -- that do most of our hiring; financial experts; others that have ideas."

Still, Jackson said he was concerned that civil rights leaders were not in the mix. He and some black lawmakers have begun to show impatience with the nation's first African American president, citing unemployment rates that have reached 20 percent for blacks in cities such as Detroit and Milwaukee.

Jackson's relationship with Obama remains tenuous. The civil rights leader refers to himself as a supporter of the president but was publicly critical of Obama several times last year. He and some other members of the old guard of civil rights leaders were not early backers of Obama's campaign and at times questioned whether Obama was ready to be elected or sufficiently concerned about issues facing the black community.

Obama, in turn, has tended to keep Jackson at arm's length and has not met with him since becoming president.

But since Obama took office, Jackson's criticism has largely been muted. The deep recession affecting some minority communities might be opening fissures, and Jackson's comments follow tough words from leaders of the Congressional Black Caucus, who have said in recent days that the White House needs to be pressured to do more for their constituents.

Jackson said he wants to discuss with administration officials both the bailout of the nation's banks and the economic stimulus. He criticized both as "watering the leaves but leaving the roots essentially dry."

"The banks were given a stimulus so much that they gave it back to the government," Jackson said. He also accused some banks of circumventing fair lending laws and the Community Reinvestment Act. Leaders at the Justice Department have said that enforcing civil rights and fair lending laws is a priority of the administration.

Jackson, who recently celebrated the 25th anniversary of his first run for the White House, said it is the right time for civil rights leaders to begin pushing Obama. "Our voices will create the sensitivity. That's the civil rights movement's role."

They want the same stuff that the rich (aka whitey) has. The working-for-it part is immaterial.

"other people getting bigger stuff than me that I would really like to have in my life,"

Now I know where the little black thug in Denver learned this. From the big black thug in Chicago.

.That's not fair Dennis. Obama has no abilities or job skills and yet became president without demonstrating any real capability for the position.

I'd like to know what Jesse is doing about the problem, other than having an affair.

I was expecting him to comment on Tiger Woods and his mistresses, but then I guess he would be labeled a hypocrite, lol.

I'm willing to give the President credit when and where due, and he is exactly right here. He should not and cannot advocate economic policies that favor one race or ethnicity over any others, and he rightly recognizes this. (At least, that is what he is saying.)

Of course, his abject lack of experience in business renders him completely incapable of knowing what must be done to "get the economy going again," but his expressed sentiment is correct, as far as it goes.

Sounds racist to me, being allocated money simply on the basis of skin colour.

Why, of course it would be racist. And Barry Soetoro is entirely right in rejecting the idea. At least...he's saying that he rejects the idea.

Now...hold on just a minute!

I can think of several shovel-ready jobs in Jesse Jackson's 'hood. I'll bet grandma, living in that shotgun house her parents built back in the day, could use someone to fix her roof, paint her house, or cut her grass. I say give'm the money--at the end of a long, sweaty day.

Of course, I can't help but think of Michael Berry's question: Where exactly is this black community you keep talkin' about?

Is Jesse Jackson the same guy that said that there are not enough white people in prison?

Fool.

We have given them trillions...and there is nothing left to give.

Why can other groups come to America, and create wealth within one generation?

Time for Jesse's ilk to roll up their shirts, and work for the American dream.

I forgot, generations of white guilt pays better.

Doooooooooom !
Besides this statement from racebaiter Jessie Jackson being totally ignorant, the black people who would be beneficiaries of this "Obama money" , the majority would use it for very stupid things that they really don't need. Especially considering it is monies received from tax payers.

I am NOT meaning to come off like an ass, but come on..

I live in Indiana, and you wouldn't believe how many blacks (not only but I'm trying to make a point) around here go and cash their govt./welfare check and their first stop........ the casino..

Also, a friend of mine works at a major chain of gas stations/convenience stores here . He told me you woldn't believe how many black people (mostly women), come in buying scratch-off lottery tickets like it were going out of style. He said he at least gets 2 or 3 a week trying to actually cash their welfare check at the store!!! Then those SAME people, (when told they don't cash checks there) leave , usually within a half hour they are back spending anywhere from $75 to $150 (sometimes more sometimes less) on SCRATCH-OFFS !!!!!!!!

It just irks me to no end..

Some of these people don't have a pot to pi$$ in, yet they are out gambling our tax money , that they are supposed to be using to better themselves, find a job if physically capable, and get OFF of govt. handout/assistance.

More hand-outs are ABSOLUTELY NOT what is needed..
If the "good reverend" was REALLY concerned about the "Black Community"
Instead of handing out even more undeserved money,(from an almost bankrupt nation) , he would push for programs for job training/placement and education TO get the "Black Community" OFF of the free handouts, with ways of bettering themselves and their families..

They are living the American dream...their version. Have lots of babies for more welfare money, food stamps, low income housing and free health care. All of that pays better than a job and gives them all that free time to have fun driving in their spiffy cars listening to their favorite rap music on their way to have more fun with their gang members.

In my experience, the real "N" word to people like this, is "NO", not the other.

No, you can't have that. You have to work to get that. "Dat's racist!"

Right, sure it is.

Interesting new tactic - a direct shakedown of the US Govt. Who'da thunk?

This has a few racial overtones to it. (is that the understatement of 2009:lol:)

I grew up in Atlanta---epicenter of the civil rights 'leaders' whose solution to racism is "blame THEM!" (meaning, of course, the whites) for ALL their current, 20th/ 21st century problems, and "TAKE FROM THEM!!!" what they feel is rightfully 'theirs', 'stolen' from them because someone (often their own fellow-villagers) sold their great-great-great-great granddaddies and grandmamas into slavery over 100 years ago and gave them into the hands of the slave-traders who brought them to the US--yet somehow, though not a ONE of them TODAY has ever BEEN a slave, nor has a ONE of US today ever OWNED a slave--somehow everything that happens now or ever has happened to them is OUR fault.

A new mayor of Atlanta has recently been elected (in very suspicious circumstances, since it's come out that as many as 1300 of the votes for him may be suspect, since the addresses they gave as their residence don't even exist), after a very long and hard-fought campaign against a white female City Council member. His major platform agenda for helping out Atlanta, which is in EXTREME financial trouble and may in fact be on the verge of bankruptcy? That he will go to Washington and get $$$ from Obama, and that will solve all our problems.

After all, surely Presbo wouldn't turn a brotha down???

You're not black, you have no right to speak. Amazing to me...the non-white population is less than 14% in the United States (at least, it was last April when I had to write a paper on demographics).
