SOFT NEWS Facebook Directive from The Borg

At least 3 lib friends have this as their status tonight"

"No one should die because they cannot afford health care, and no one should go broke because they get sick. If you agree, please post this as your status for the rest of the day." This likely comes from the Oborgama

I have gotten an alternative response from Freep that I am posting, do the same if you agree, show them they DO NOT own the interet:

"No one should die because Obama wants to ration health care, and the nation should not go broke because of Obama’s continued reckless spending. If you agree, please post this as your status for the rest of the day and do something useful, like writing or calling your representatives"

Try to resist the temptation to editorialize, lets keep consistent to show we are organized against THE ONE.

Veterans Affairs’ Death Planning Book: The Discarded Headlines

The TNOYF dumpster-divers found some discarded concepts for the Veteran’s Affairs Death Planning Book, “Your Life, Your Choices,” a brochure (below) that counsels veterans in matters of quality of life and living wills.
Here are the versions we found in the dumpsters at the VA:

VA death pamphlet or tool?

http://blogs.fayobserver.com/operationmarriage/2009/09/03/va-death-pamphlet-or-tool/#comment-2681

A few days ago the Department of Veteran’s Affairs posted a workbook on it’s website (2nd item) that has some veterans pretty upset. The workbook, called “Your Life, Your Choices” is about making end of life decisions. It was created in 1997 but removed from the VA website in 2007 because Bush Administration officials worried that it might seem like the VA was pressuring veterans to decide that their lives were not worth living. After some public outcry this week the VA released this statement saying that the workbook was reposted on the web page because the Obama Administration believes it is important for veterans to have all the information they need.
I looked through the whole workbook and didn’t find it to be that bad. The page that seems to be ruffling feathers is page 25 of the PDF file (page 21 of the workbook). It has a series of quality of life statements and boxes where someone can mark “difficult, but acceptable”, “worth living, but just barely,” “not worth living,” and “can’t answer now.” The statements include, “I can no longer walk but get around in a wheelchair;” “I can no longer get outside, I spend all day at home;” “I can no longer contribute to my family’s well-being;” “I rely on a feeding tube to keep me alive;” and “I am a severe financial burden on my family,” among others. Some of the circumstances listed do seem seem like moments when someone would decide that life is no longer worth living, but others don’t even seem close to the calling it quits point, such as “I cannot seem to shake the blues”, “I live in a nursing home,” and the aforementioned wheelchair confinement. Even implying that someone in those situations might want to end their life seems, well, offensive. And some veterans have said that they find these statements to be offensive, the implication being that they should go ahead and decide to end their lives if they check enough boxes.
I’m not sure what I think. I do think it’s interesting that the workbook was removed for two years and then reposted. I’d like to know what was discussed when it was removed in 2007 and then what was discussed when it was decided that it would be reposted. I seriously doubt anyone in the VA or the Obama Administration reposted it to encourage veterans to end their lives, as some vets seem to believe. But the fact that it was put back on the site makes you wonder why.
On a lighter note, this website has some very funny mock covers for the workbook. Those of you with dark-ish senses of humor like mine will appreciate them. (My fav is “Now that you’re done killing, maybe it’s time to die.”)

VA'S END-OF-LIFE GUIDE CONTROVERSY - PART 2

( http://www.vawatchdog.org/ ) This is the second of three parts. Tammy Duckworth, Public Affairs Chief for the VA, defends the use of "Your Life, Your Choices," ( the so-called Death Book for Veterans ) although she blows the interview when she doesn't seem to have a grasp of dates the guide was used and didn't know about a directive urging its use. Program aired Sunday, August 23, 2009 on Fox News Sunday. Part 3 is Sen. Arlen Specter who wants to hold a hearing on why the guide is being used. (be sure to view part one for more info)

VA'S END-OF-LIFE GUIDE CONTROVERSY - PART 3

( http://www.vawatchdog.org/ ) This is the third of three parts. Sen. Arlen Specter (D-PA), wants a hearing into why the VA is still using the end-of-life guide "Your Life, Your Choices," ( the so-called Death Book for Veterans ). Program aired Sunday, August 23, 2009 on Fox News Sunday.
