Tobacco seeds and growing

WOW

Well I bought 2 of these little e54349x Compact Plant Trainer & Jiffy Mix Combo from Jung Seed. jungseed.com They have 49 tube spots each and you water from the base of it. Then when it's time to plant you push the bottom up and it loosens the plugs to plant.

So I tried really hard to get just a few seeds per tube but failed miserably. There were tons in each spot. So when they came up I waited for the 4 leaves and finally there they were. Now I look at this and think NoWay am I moving those little guys...oh well she said to do it so here goes.

So I go get a couple of toothpicks (smallest thing I could think of) and carefully work them apart from all their little friends and plant them in the 2nd plant trainer. Well Lo & Behold they ALL survived and have been growing like weeds....

Now if we could just get a week without a deluge I could get them planted before they are full grown....LOL

So far I would highly reccomend these trainers for starting just about anything. And thanks again Squeeksmom for the seeds.

Chemgal- that's wonderful!!!! It IS really hard to just get a couple seeds at a time - almost impossible.
Flipper, honest, they WILL grow. It seems they start so slow and small, then, all of a sudden, they're big. When mine go into the garden, I usually have to really "look" for them - then, they outgrow me. :)

Home from the trip - it was sure fun, but it was sure exhausting. I think I'm getting too old for visiting.

i found that it is just cheaper to take wide strips of newspaper, roll it around the bottom of a jar, and twist. then i filled these little cups up with soil, and, using a fork, transplanted the tiny little ittybitty seedlings. some made it, some didn't. most made it. Now, I don't know what to do with all the extra I'm going to have, so I'll just let it grow and see where this goes. funny, I quit smoking, and so did dh, so i guess we'll be using it for barter.

Thanks again, they are going to town out there. Now if you could please explain the next steps in this operation, would be very grateful

1. Fertilization? what do they like? (I have rabbit pellets available) or epsom salt or Miracle Gro

2. How to save the seeds like you did? and will the plant produce well if I save the seed or should I only do it on certain ones?

3. After harvesting & hanging in the barn to dry (I am going to hang the leaves on hangers on rods ....not full plant hanging) what is next step or can I just leave them there to dry/age?

4. Anything else you can think of
Thanks for the chance to learn something new.

This is so kind of you Squeeks. I appreciate your generosity.

Hope sometime there's something you'd like from Iowa that I could help you out with.
