Now is it Cable or phone lines that are cut?

(CNN) -- An undersea cable carrying Internet traffic was cut off the Persian Gulf emirate of Dubai, officials said Friday, the third loss of a line carrying Internet and telephone traffic in three days.

I'd say *spanky-spanky*

So sad, too bad, boo-hoo-hoo.

:popcorn1:

That's right. Munch on your popcorn while hundreds of thousands of people could be killed. Enjoy. That's precisely the kind of attitude that causes people in the Middle East to hate us. We kill hundreds of thousands of Iraqis. We killed 500,000 Iraqi children during the 10 years of bombing between Gulf Wars. Leslie Stahl asked Madeline Albright if the cost of 500,000 Iraqi children was "worth it"; she casually responded. "Yes, I think it was worth it." Yup. Them thar dirty tawel heads hate us for ar feedumz. Even if one feels that certain just war measures must be taken (and I dispute it in this case), the loss of just one innocent life even in a just war is nothing short of a terrible tragedy.

Silly me, but WHY should we care a tinker's damn whether or not IRAN'S INTERNET is up or down? Really.

Beause perhaps whoever's behind it doesn't want reports on the ground of some impending atrocities to be braodcast back to the entire world? Remember that the internet caused much of the uproar in the world against the Iraq war -- because some pictures got out.

I give up.

Wow, you sure do know how to misinterpret me. LOL!!

Man. What I MEAN is that someone is spanking them, and if by any chance WE did it, which may not be the way it IS, then I would believe it would be because they KNOW SOMETHING ABOUT IRAN that may have been forestalled; same with the other locations. You don't know, either.

As for the popcorn, that's an invitation to keep watching the thread in anticipation of the next few posters' opinions.

Get off my case.

There've now been THREE cables that have - coincidentally - been severed. Rumors elsewhere suggest a fourth has also been cut.

Folks, the likelihood of 3, or 4, major communications cables being severed is pretty close to zero i'd say.

SOMETHING IS UP.

Where are you seeing the 4th cable cut being reported?

I forget what it's called, but isn't Florida where the top commander for Iraqi operations has his 'command'?

If so, then this is now looking a bit more like an operation against us.

Somethings up. I don't believe in coincidence.

I agree. First it was egypt that was having problems. Then it moved to india and several persian gulf countries and, now, it's moved to iran. Coincidence my arse. If this is just a coincidence then my real name is santa claus. Ho-freaking-ho. :ld:

And just in time for the Super Bowl, too.

If

several international deep water cables have been cut within days of each other it is certainly intentional.

The how and why remain to be seen.

Cutting off communications is one way to disrupt an enemy. And this would be one of the most overkill methods of trying to stop one or two "messages" from getting across, for those of you who think someone would go to this bother to intercept a message.

You know, there are still cell phones.

Relax,

So far most of the official Iranian gov sites are up.
The Iranian gov is not that worried.

Phone, tele comm, sat, and smoke signals still seem up.

Seems to be a small, limited hic-up.

A bit early to be wetting the bed.

AQ has ships no? So I guess they would have anchors too. I bet it was them. Just a bunch of peon vandals.

NOW

this could also very well be a financial move too. While the world markets teeter, disrupt the easy flow of information and all those digital dollars?

There is no evidence that anyone did anything.

It might not be people, boats, ships, OR dolphins(trained by the Navy).
Things happen underwater, all by themselves.

We don't know anything.

Hell, that site said most of Florida had no internet, while folks where posting from Florida. SO, how good is that site?

AQ:

Go have a beer, relax.

IF it gets time for the US to pop Iran, you will get some warning.

IF it gets time for Israel to pop Iran, there will be no warning.

Your either ready, or your not.

DS might, maybe, have something.

If it is money related, it could be upset fishermen.

It has happened before.
In the US.

Someone gets upset with a rich Islander, and runs an anchor over their power line.

Dubai is the financial center of the ME. They were already in trouble after the first cut. There was an earlier thread, with some articles referencing their difficulties.

If repairs take days or weeks, can you imagine what that will do to world financial markets?

IMO this, whatever, or whomever, is a financial attack. Who would benefit the most by a collapse of international trading?????????

now

not to get anyone totally riled up here, but this was posted elsewhere and I think the poster has a point:

Some thoughts

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,327588,00.html

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — A leading Internet provider in the Emirates said an undersea cable had been cut early Friday in the Persian Gulf, causing severe phone line disruptions here and compounding an already existing Internet outage across large parts of the Middle East and Asia after two other undersea cables were damaged earlier this week north of Egypt.

Omar Sultan, chief executive of Dubai's IPS DU, said the incident was "very unusual." He said it wasn't known how the underwater FLAG FALCON cable, stretching between the United Arab Emirates and Oman, had been damaged.

"The situation is critical for us in terms of congestion" on international lines, Sultan told The Associated Press, but refused to speculate on the extent of the damage.

DU said in a press release that the cause of the incident "had not yet been identified."

The owner of the FALCON cable, U.K. FLAG Telecom said the cable was cut at 05:59 GMT Friday, 56 kilometers (34.8 miles) off the coast of Dubai and that a "repair ship has been notified and expected to arrive at the site in the next few days."

The U.K. company is also the owner of one of the undersea cables that were sliced Wednesday in the Mediterranean Sea. That damage triggered wide Internet outages, hampering businesses and private usage across the Mideast and Asia.

Damaged Cable Knocks Out Internet Across Middle East A FLAG official in India, speaking on condition of anonymity because of company policy, said workers were still trying to determine how the Persian Gulf cable was cut.

He declined to comment on whether the cut was somehow linked to Wednesday's cut in Egypt, but said he did not believe FLAG's cables were deliberately targeted.

As in the case of the Mediterranean damage, which Egyptian officials said was caused by a ship's anchor when a vessel couldn't dock in the port of Alexandria, there was also speculation that an anchor had sliced the Persian Gulf cable.

DU said the incident "added further complications to the existing cuts on the FLAG Europe-Asia and SEA-ME-WE4 cables" off the coast of Egypt and that the Persian Gulf cut "impacted all international voice calls through the DU network," leading to "severe congestion and degradation of international voice calls."

It said national calls in the Emirates and Internet access were not affected.

DU serves large residential communities of expatriates in the Emirates, including residents on the man-made luxury islands off the coast of Dubai. The Internet provider also serves Dubai International Financial Center.

The full impact of the latest incident on trade in the Mideast's business hub will not be gauged until Sunday, the first working day after the Friday-Saturday Muslim weekend.

Earlier Friday, FLAG said that a repair ship was expected to arrive Tuesday at the site of the damaged cables off the coast of Alexandria, and that repair work would likely take a week.

The Mediterranean cut took place 8.3 kilometers (5 miles) from Alexandria, on a stretch linking Egypt to Italy, the company said but gave no explanation why repairs would take so long. Alexandria harbor has been closed for most of this week because of bad weather.

Same provider. 3 cables. At least 2 different geographic locations, possibly 3. Cuts several miles from shore.

You'd have to take out a satellite to do that. Now THAT would be scary.

Perhaps the mullahs do not want their people corrupted by Western decadence on display at the Super Bowl (w/ "wardrobe malfunctions" and the like).

Iran's internet IS NOT DOWN.

find me one mention anywhere in the news that says Iran lost internet or for that matter was even affected. just curious.

India, Egypt, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are the only countries that were having issues.

think about it. if you wanted to cut internet coms for a specific country why would you cut the pipes for an entire region and leave the target country online?

yes they are still online.

it's slow but this Iranian webradio station is up and functioning.
