Not bad CFI, not bad at all.

Kewl thread!

there's soap, deodorant, a razor, etc. i really don't know what situation i'll be facing when the balloon goes up, but it is possible i will have occasion to 'go into town' and will want to be presentable. also, keeping clean raises morale and that includes not stinkin' to high heaven. :lkick:

btw, one good result of this thread was doing a long overdue inventory and repacking of my bag. i carried it on my truck for a year, transferring it from vehicle to vehicle and now i have a much better idea of what holds up well and what doesn't. ;)

My problem is that by the time I got everything I needed in my BOB, I couldn't pick it up. Guess I need to invest in a little red wagon. My makeup alone takes up a lot of space. I want to look good when I am bugging out you know.:lkick:

A1919,

I don't think anyone is going to come rob his house of show up at his door WTSHTF over the contents of a BOB. Maybe if he discussed his AE system and gold stash or his 18 month supply of mountain house, but this is just a BOB discussion.

CFI, Why so many different types of ammo. If you pick up a rifle from someone, it will probably have some ammo with it.

It's not like it's GOLD or bunches of CASH. It's just 'Camper Stuff'. I bet that almost everyone here has very similar BOB's. And I'm pretty sure most us have at least one firearm as well.

No State secrets here. Well, ok, I did think that his deodorant was a little sissy. :lkick:

during hurricane hugo (1989) folks in st croix (virgin islands) had guns but couldn't find any ammo with which to defend themselves. since i read about their situation i have always tried to carry a few common calibers with me just in case i'm in the same situation. it's a prepper thing. ;)

1919, if you want to come all the way to elko just to rob me of my BOB, come right ahead. if someone wants it THAT badly they probably need it more than i do. :lkick: just remember, that pistol is on me all the time, and i'm a VERY good shot.

I should add that my bag linked above (The Quest Mission Rig) is intended to be an everyday resource bag. I see it in fact more as a "Get Me Home" bag than a Bug Out Bag as my plan A, B, and C is to hunker down. In the slim event of needing a plan D--then it can serve that Get out of Dodge purpose as well (though I would be loaded up with a heck of a lot more than that if at all possible). ;)

Rolling papers huh? I mean cigarette papers. I didn't see the can of Prince Albert or do you have something else down in the bottom of the bag? Ok! I see the decon box now. He he.

Very Nice though!!!! Mine is a tad smaller so it would only accompany a short bug out unless I had to immediately resort to living off the land. I would be ok in the warm months.

JC, mine too was built to be a 'get home bag', as i was driving up to 250 miles from home on a daily basis. for a real BOB i'd likely pack it differently. also i used it often while on the road so again it's more like what you're talking about.

rhughe, i have a bad habit of leaving the house with only a few papers in my tobacco can. it's for that reason that i pack several books of papers in my bags as many stores don't carry them. BTW, my tobacco can is also a decon box attached to my keys (i may forget my keys somewhere but i NEVER forget my tobacco for long ). the box holds enough tobacco for 2-3 days if stuffed full. the extra box on my bag is for those trips that take longer than that. as for cold weather bugging, i'll be adding a set of thermal underwear soon as the temp is already starting to go below freezing at night.

Anne in TN, you have an excellent contents list there for a fanny pack. now you just need to work on the main bag. ;)

jarhead, i used the last of it and just haven't replaced it yet.

so, any ideas on what i may have missed?

Fishing kit? (#10 hooks (small for panfish), 10# test mono line, a few split shot, small bobbers. Frog gig (handy spearing item for small game).

Work gloves (form fitting, compact)

Folding saw (or small rope saw)

Spare batteries for flashlight.

Headlamp w/red led for night vision preservation.

Polypropylene long john shirt.

Hat/sunglasses.

Great thread CFI. I have a few things to update now thanks to you.

Some "N95" face masks and latex gloves (or non-latex if you're allergic). For any situation where there is spreading airborne disease or disease that passes through contact. May possibly protect some against bird flu.

I've got "3M 8210 Plus Particulate Respirators" for masks and Powder Free Nitrile Gloves. (I'm allergic to latex.)

They're not in my BOB, but in my regular preps, because I don't yet have a BOB. Plans A, B, C, and D are shelter in place. Due to health problems, I'd in almost all circumstances have a better chance of survival at home than by bugging out. But, Plan X is bug out (before wildfire, possibly before hurricane, and possibly after tornado or hurricane). Putting together a BOB is getting high on my list right now, so thanks for the reminder.

hey troy, how about a list? :shr:

everyone else, yeah, i need to add a few N95's to the kit. i have gloves in with the trauma dressing. as for the other suggestions...great! keep 'em coming! also, lets get some others in here showing off what they've put together!

sassy, i have the canteen full and a water filter for more from the field.

genrim, have you considered a pack to help you get home if you're out when the balloon goes up? especially if you go out of town or work a good distance from the house.

Kate, i have matches in every stage of my BOB, from those in my pocket pack to the box of 250 strike anywhere kitchen matches in the main bag. i admit, the fishing kit would be good for many, unfortunately, around here you'd die of starvation while trying to catch enough for a decent meal. we have what the locals here call a river, but most of us would think of it more as a ditch that's dry half the year...i'll be fortunate to get enough water from it to keep going.

leviolinist, good idea on the bible and BSA book. ;)

ruckmanite:

Work gloves (form fitting, compact) - good idea, i'll add some

Folding saw (or small rope saw) - i have the pocket chainsaw

Spare batteries for flashlight. - the main light is a hand crank LED model...no batteries needed

Headlamp w/red led for night vision preservation. - i'll seriously consider that, thanks

Polypropylene long john shirt. - they will be added soon as the weather is starting to get cold

Hat/sunglasses. - i hate wearing hats but it's not a bad idea...

mc2006, the nukalert is on my keychain, but i do have the dosimeter in the fanny pack also. the KI is in the freezer at the house. i'm not sure i want to keep any in a bag that see's the temp swings mine does.

dirtdigger, i'll look into it, thanks. btw, got a link?

anybody else? this is fun! :D

Okay CFI. Well maybe add a few tins of sardines instead. On second thought, if waters a problem, their salty. Never mind fish. Scratch that off. I think your bob looks great. I've got stuff, but not in a bag. Thanks for all your ideas as well. I've got some work to do. Will post a picture on the weekend.

No pics here.

Back-pack w/light weight sleeping bag with Coastal Temp ratiings. As much freeze-dried mountain house as will fit. A .22 Smith Model 41 w/ 7" bbl. w/ 200 rounds. A Katadyn H2o filter, sun-glasses, razors, lite gauge tie wire. Fishing line, and hooks. A Gore-tex bivy sack. A small foam air expansive pillow/neck cradle. Zeiss 10 x 25 Bino's Silva Orienteering and Sunnto Sighting compass divider w/pencil and small 360 degree protractor. Water proof note pad. Ghillie head net. w/ Los Angeles Times front page interwoven for Urban Camouflage - Kidding of course about that reading material.:lkick: Camel-Back 100 oz bladder that fits into or can be worn out side my pack. Matches, magnesium striker, magnifying glasses. Signal mirror, Led head-lamps and High intensity adjustable light. Two other special purpose tools ***'* and a *******. 100' nylon string. A sturdy blade. Small roll of duct tape. Small med kit. Do I have to fit everthing in the back-pack? With my hands free I would take the slung Steyr Scout bolt action in .308 and 100 rounds in a belt sling worn under the back-pack. Man this is getting heavy. Still lighter than I used to pack.

I have backed packed this way before but have never had to do a real Bug-out. Not looking forward to it to be honest either. Whoops almost forgot my roll up boonie hat and my tooth brush. Not sure I would take the deoderant, since I'd be traveling through Big Foot Country anyway.

I would add a couple of plain gray bandannas(No need to appear as a gang member). Great for mopping that perspiring brow as you tote your gear about the countryside.

A couple of rolls of TP would be possible. When a current use roll is down to a 1/3 or 1/4 size replace it and wrap the wrapper over the smaller roll, smash flat and tuck in a accessable spot in your kit. A small flat pack of baby wipes could add a measure of comfort also.

My headband lamp has a brite white light and a lessser beam as well as a red lamp for preserving night vision. How many ex-military here learned to close the master eye during a flare or when waking to a bright light? I have been doing this since basic training. (I realize that we did not have parachute flares in the cavalry)

Does anyone carry FRS or other two-way comms in their BOBS?

How about your bug-out attire? Does anyone keep a paidr of sturdy pants and a shirt ready at a moments notice? What about a pair of leather-palmed gloves with cuffs covering the wrists? I live in the "Shaky State".

My wife and I are re-evaluating our bug-out capabilities due to some medical concerns so a back pack outing is probably out for us. That does not mean we will not have some preps ready to roll. I have a couple of travel bags that have a back pack set up wheels on the bottom as well and a handle for pulling.

BTW, do not forget any needed meds or inhalors, etc.

The June 2002 issue of guns and Ammo HANDGUNS has a great article on BOB's with color and B&W photos. (Go ahead, ask me how I know that?")

CFI: A red-LED $6 keychain light at Big 5 Sporting Goods would cover the red light option.

The hat is mostly a cold-weather option since you lose most of your heat out your head. Maybe Marthanoir can send you some SAS headgear?

You might want to pack some quart and gallon size Freezer-grade Ziploc Bags to collect water in case you can't stay by the water source, and have to fill up and run. remember to reinforce seams with duct tape.

I'd get another knife - something heavier than the bushman you can use for chopping and splitting wood, or a Cold Steel Rifleman hawk with a hammer pawl.

Other ideas later as they come to me.

Christian for Israel- were all just poking fun at the deodorant carry. I also carry it "concealed" in my every-day walk around pack at work, as well as within the BOB. I have been an urbanite all my life but am very comfortable in all out-door experiences. My fishing is way more rusty than my shooting/hiking/or orienteering skills ever will be. Mom and Dad got me started as a 10 year old in the California Deserts and it stuck. They were my 1st hiking crew.

My best friends and I have more fun hiking, shooting, and camping out than grown men should. There is sooooooo much freeeeedom out there to be enjoyed with simple pursuits. Get me off-road and I'm in my play-pen; I just love it.
