People who go into the national parks and forests do so to deliberately isolate themselves from people for a while.
Many of us like the feeling of being alone and away from everyone else sometimes.
Others who live on the fringe know this and sometimes take advantage of the sheep who strays too far from the flock.

Lesson to be learned: If you like to get away be yourself, stray from the flock as it were, make sure you can protect yourself.

On another note, out of 350 million people, how many serial killers are loose and plying their trade in this country at any given time?

Last FBI report I saw(some years ago) the number was in the low double digits IIRC.

BTW, lost people act differently than you and I. I know a case, hunting cabin in the middle of a clearing over city block in size (3+ acres), low twilight and one deer hunter has not returned. Buddies start to worry and just then they hear a gunshot. They rush out of the cabin to see Buddy run into the middle of the clearing, fire his gun into the air, then run right past them, the cabin with lit windows and the cabin door with light streaming out. They had to run him down and tackle him.

You find clothes and not the man, not unusual. I have heard of such cases in other places. The 'lost' feeling takes over and the person might do anything including running right off a cliff.

We listened to the whole interview last night. (well, I did anyway, dh fell asleep thru part of it)

UNLESS you have listened to this guy, you don't know the whole story. A lot of the stories he talked about were from the 60's and even earlier like a couple from the 1920's.

He said he never (and he didn't in the program) says it was a bigfoot that nabbed all these people, (including small children) And some of these people ended up MILES away from where they disappeared. Like a toddler about 3 years old that was spotted by a couple out hiking, that was way up a very steep hillside on an outcropping. That child was never found. (the couple didn't know he was lost and figured his parents were with him.)

It was a very frightening 4 hours. You can listen to it at either Coast to Coast, if a member or at the radio site I found last night. http://www.cjob.com/other/audiovault.html
Just start the audio for Sunday night's show at 00.00. You will have to go back each hour to click it ahead to the next hour. It played really nicely on my Winamp player. You can even push thru the commercials to make it faster.

Worth a listen. Very scary stuff and like I said, he did not push off bigfoot as being what happened to these poor people.

Thanks for the recap, WiseOwl. I listened to much of it, too, and was particularly struck by the stories of the 58 y/o lady who went ahead of the group she was hiking with, and the 16 y/o girl, who was also hiking with a group and just went on ahead a short distance. Both simply disappeared without a trace. There were widespread searches for both. And thank you for emphasizing that this author/presenter did not present Bigfoot as a possible explanation. There were callers to the show who did talk about forest creatures in their area, and legends connected to them, but this was not Paulides' apparent agenda.

You can always tell those who don't bother to read the article or watch the videos, but just post without understanding or comprehending the OP.

I trained for awhile with a S&R team and when the trained K-9's in our unit lay down it usually means it's not a live search anymore it's a recovery. If the scent trail ends at a road it's probably an abduction. Dogs on the trail, especially in the mountains, do get tired and so do their handlers. You have to do your best to stay on it though. Weather has a lot to do with it too, following a scent trail is like following invisible smoke. If it's a recovery the scent may be blowing around but it's there for a long time.
