TAMPA, Florida (AP) - It probably sounds like downtown Tampa is under attack Wednesday afternoon. But don't worry, it's just a drill.

A combined Special Operations force from MacDill Air Force is demonstrating its combat capabilities outside the Tampa Convention Center, starting at 1 p.m. And organizers say it's going to get loud.

The show of force also includes special operations teams from Australia, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Jordan, Norway, Poland, Thailand and United Arab Emirates.

The drill will be a hostage-rescue scenario and include a CV-22 Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft demonstration and a variety of other advanced military technology. The public is encouraged to watch from behind a perimeter set up by police.

I think they are either trying to get people to enlist or they are starting these military shows like they do in china and north Korea. :shr:

It is practice for the August RNC that will take place in Tampa. Also this week was the big disaster drill for hurricane season and the scenario was very over the top. The hypothetical situation was a hurricane coming up Tampa Bay while the RNC was in session. The questions included how to deal with huge crowds of protestors that would likely be uncooperative on top of everything else.

"CITIZENS! Please direct your attention to your brave civil servants as they demonstrate their skills and training with the modern riot control equipment provided by your generous contributions to the Greater Good. Please, carefully observe their ability to manage large crowds, bending them to their will. Their power is irresistable. Remember their power for the future, and be cowed. Remember. Thank you."

...and the final verdict was...

"Too big for local authorities...Call in the National Guard to assist with law enforcement."

What a surprise...

Not really "over the top". When I was working on disaster drills, I used to add enough carp to the scenario that it WOULD overwhelm local abilities eventually, simply to force the use of the interfaces....
People used to HATE me for my progressively revealed scenarios.
