Chapter 31 part 1

Chapter 31

Jeanie Reynolds had not planned on her little excursion to last as long as it had. She had arrived near the mosque around 12 am local time and had watched a procession of cars move through the remote-controlled gate. She had a cheap monocle she had bought at Wal-Mart that had some pretty good night vision capabilities. Jeanie had written down all of the license plate numbers and tried to make a general description on the pad she had tucked in her windbreaker. She had become very interested when she saw a face she remembered from Arizona. It was only a glimpse, but she was sure she had seen the same man after the shooting. She was sure she had seen him after she shot the second terrorist. He was standing next to a car similar to the one he had just pulled in driving.

So here she was four hours later and waiting to see what was going on. She had a small parabolic microphone pointed to the window that seemed to be a gathering place, but was not getting all that much of the conversation. They stayed away from the windows which limited the effectiveness of her equipment. She was about to call it a night when two of the men exited the side door and began to smoke. She directed the microphone down to them and scrunched down in the car more. She listened as they spoke of the warriors teaching a lesson to the infidels. They spoke of an order to increase the attacks to cover for something, but nothing was said of what that was. Jeanie was angry over the lack of information she was getting. She was about to leave when one of the men asked about Phoenix. The other man laughed and said they had taken down that dog that had insulted the Imam. Jeanie’s face flushed as she heard talk of the killing of her friend.

The first man said, "it is too bad people showed up and you could not take care of that American bitch.”

“Yes, I would have killed the American who took our brother's life as she shot him in the back.” said the taller terrorist she remembered from Phoenix.

Jeanie sneered; no one was on that street to block him from coming at her... well, except for the 45 in her hand and she had shot him in the chest looking him dead in the eyes. The bragging infuriated her.

“Coward” She spat under her breath.

Jeanie put down the microphone and dropped the monocle onto the floor of the car. She was furious and well beyond caring what happened now. She crossed the street up from the main gate and walked around the walled courtyard. She had seen what looked liked a smaller doorway towards the front of the mosque compound. She clung to the wall as she walked to the opening. The gate was secured with a heavy chain and lock. She could try and pick the lock, but that would take a few minutes and she did not want to lose the two men outside. The gate had small spikes at the top, but she felt she could traverse the climb with little in the way of danger. She pulled on her the mechanix mpact gloves she had brought and tested the kbar warthog in it's sheath she had running across her back at her waist. When she was comfortable that everything was secure she jumped and grabbed one of the spikes and pushed her feet against the parallel walls. She was able to pull up and stand on the capstone of the wall, then lowered herself down to the ground. She moved over and hung close to the wall and moved towards the back of the mosque.

Jeanie worried the men may have left, but she caught a whiff of the smell of cigarettes on the air. She moved to the corner of the building and pulled up the neoprene mask she had brought, just in case. Although she did not plan on this, she always planned for the possible and she knew this was always possible. She ducked down, hidden by one of the cars as she came around the corner, she could now hear the men as they chatted back and forth. She moved between the cars and was now within about 15 feet of where they stood. Jeanie knew that if she hit them both quickly they would not get a call out to the people inside. She reached behind and grabbed the short bladed warthog, holding the knife with the blade back against the forearm.

She would go for a quick hit to the solar plexus for the one man. Then she intended to plunge the knife into the heart of the man she saw in Phoenix. She leapt over the car and landed quietly on her feet in a dead run towards the men. They had barely been able to process that they were seeing a black-clothed figure moving towards them quickly. She struck. Her first hit landed on the man to her right and hit him in the chest. He went down gasping for air. Her hand came back and sliced at the man's arm to her left and she could feel it cut into the flesh. She brought the knife back around, reached behind the man and pulled him forward, the blade sliding neatly between his ribs and in his heart. His knees buckled and Jeanie went down to her knees with him. With her left hand she pulled down the mask and whispered. “Regards from this American bitch and say hello to your brother.” She drove the knife in deeper as she saw his eyes roll back.

She had no time to feel elation or revulsion. The man that she had taken down was getting up much faster then she had wanted, but she wanted him to live. He would be her messengers to the others. She came up quickly, side kicked him in the gut and took the butt of the knife and used it like brass knuckles, hitting him squarely in the jaw. He went down like a sack of wet clothes with a nasty thud and was not getting up. Jeanie looked down at the body of the terrorist. She could not find it in herself to feel any sense of shame. She had been a citizen only weeks ago and they had declared war on her and her friends.

“Let slip the dogs of war,” she whispered.

Jeanie removed the outer glove and a dark purple nitrile glove was underneath. She placed her hand palm down in the pool of blood forming from the body. She placed a hand print on the window of the nearest car and then drew a circle around it. She wrote the blood of the patriot under the circle. She was admiring her handiwork, not paying attention to the back door that now was fully opened, with a man standing in it with an ak47. A single shot rang out and hit the car next to her knee. She immediately sprang over the car and pulled her glove back on as she was cursing herself for being so stupid as to let someone sneak up on her. She reached for the knife, but it was not there. She could hear the man attempting to eject what she figured was a stove pipe round. She stood up quickly and saw her knife on the other side of the hood. Jeanie grabbed it and secured it in the sheath, then began making her way towards the gate through the cars.

Three more rounds hit various cars and one right in front of her. Another and then another hit around the front of the car and she started feeling she was trapped. He had found her and moved closer with the AK. She peeked around the front and saw the large man walking towards the car. He fired a round off, hitting the front headlight and sending her back behind the engine. She was pretty well trapped. Dammit, she did not want this to end this way, but she was not going to go out without a fight. She peeked out again. Another round rang out, then she was up on her feet and running at the man with the gun. He was just raising the AK for a shot to her chest. She had the knife in her hand, going for his neck and was seven feet away and closing. The rifle was now level with her chest; she looked at his finger as he began to pulled the trigger. She hoped the forward momentum would allow her to hit her target and she waited for the concussion of being shot. She watched and moved closer as she saw a small puff of skin. The man jerked the AK up and fired into the air. She saw two more hits to the man's skull as she stood in front of him, close enough to cut his throat. She was dazed. A second before she was sure she was dead. Now this man had been shot three times and she had no idea where from, other then from the left side of his head. She heard people moving from the inside of the mosque.

“Soldier, move!”, a voice said from near the gate “now!”

She looked. A dark clad figure beckoned her and she ran for the gate that now stood open. The two figures ran across and into the car she had borrowed. The figure pushed her across to the passenger side, as he started the car and backed up a full block before turning and heading back to a safe location. He pulled into a small business and stopped the car and quickly got out and headed into a older pickup. Jeanie was right behind and had all her gear and dropped it in the bead of the truck. This must be a safe place to drop a car. If it was seen, it would be just another stolen vehicle. They drove in silence back to her father's home.

“Your father taught you better than that”, said a voice from behind the mask.

The voice and that accent, she had heard that voice before in the past. The balaclava covered the hairline and above the lips only the dark eyes were visible. She reached over and pulled the material from the head and down.

“Gael” She whispered.

She leaned in and kissed him tenderly on the lips. “ I missed you.”

“I have missed you," he said "and I am sorry I left but... “

“That was not the time, I was too young and you were a warrior with my father. It hurt, but I understood.”

“ So you are the guard dog my father sent,” she said with a smile, as she sat back down on the passenger's side.

“Yes, he seems to think you are going to get in trouble... imagine that” he said.

They rode in silence as they neared the gate and pushed the code to enter. They drove back to Jeanie’s house and unloaded her gear bag. She watched as he pulled a odd looking rifle out of the backseat.

“What is that?” she asked.

He smiled and held the rifle up to her inspection.

“This is a hand made tactical 22. The barrel is suppressed with a 20 round magazine, an AR type adjustable butt stock with a rail system for a quick detach scope. “

She marveled at the simplicity and the utter lethality of the weapon.

They got in the cabin and she showed Gael the hideaway her father had made her build into the cabin. A small 3 ft by 3 ft hole in the wall that you had to push the right nail hole on the right board. Since the wall was comprised of nails and wood it would do little to try and use some metal detector. Gael placed the gun in the hidden recess and hugged Jeanie. She felt the comfort of his arms.

“You were careless tonight.. that cannot happen again” he said as he looked into her eyes. “Now go and get some rest, I will take the couch.”

She moved away and headed down the hall. “ I know I was reckless... thanks for saving me” she said.

it was just turning 6 a.m. when she lay down. The news was on the television, but she did not see the newscast from Texas before she drifted off to sleep.

Agent Greene arrived in Kentucky and was picked up by state police helicopter that carried him to Sheriff Timmons. The two men shook hands, exchanging pleasant greetings. The Sheriff led him back to the patrol car and introduced him to his Captain, JR.

“Nice to meet you, JR. I have heard about the problems you have had with the agent in charge. I am here to change that.” Greene said.

JR extended a large hand. “ I hope that is true. I have talked to my brother and the other members of the group. They will meet with you, me and the sheriff. They will allow you to view all guns and they have a computer, as you asked for, with internet access.”

“That is fine, I will check all of the serial numbers and if none come back stolen, this is over” Greene said.

“I would be very happy, if that happens Agent Greene,” JR said.

They drove back to the compound and the throng of reporters that had stayed since day one. The ATF were encampmed away from the reporters and had a command tent setup for the group of agents that had been stationed since the beginning of this standoff. They had posted two agents to keep the reporters back. Agent Greene and the Sheriff walked towards the tent, ducking down as they entered the flapped door. Agent Stove was giving a briefing and was instructing the agents on patrols and sectors when he looked up towards Agent Greene and the Sheriff Timmons.

Agent Greene knew Stove. They had run-ins on more then one occasion. All of the agents looked towards the two men who had just walked into the tent.

“Sheriff, I suggest you head on back to your local boys. You are not welcome ...” Agent Stove started.

Agent Greene began in a loud deep voice, ”The Sheriff is here per my request to help me solve and end this embarrassing situation that you find yourself in.”

“You solve, you can take him and that hick that head butted me and..”

Agent Greene continued as if no one had said anything. “Agent Stove is hereby relieved of this operation. He is no longer Agent in Charge. I have been asked by the President and the acting director of the ATF to help resolve this matter as quickly and peacefully as possible.”

Agent Stove's face was flushed and spittle began to splash from his lips as he tried to say anything. When he finally found his voice, “ just who the hell do you think you are? This is my operation and I will finish it as soon as reinforcements arrive.”

Agent Greene moved closer to Agent Stove and was well within his comfort zone. He pulled the two letters from his pocket, handing them to the enraged Agent.

"I have been instructed by the President and Director that, if I have any trouble at all, I am to have the local Sheriff or the State Police arrest you and place you in custody until you can be fired,” Agent Greene said in a hard and low tone. He continued, “agent Stove has no more authority here and is at this time no longer on this case”, looking about the room to the agents. “ This situation has been mishandled. I have asked for help from a member of one of the families at the ranch to help me go and check the firearms and leave.”

“This is an armed compound and those people are criminals and the President has no law enforcement capabilities.” Agent Stove spat.

“You are completely correct, but since this was done with a Presidential degree, then it can be stopped by one and that is what has happened.” Agent Greene said, more to the other agents then to Stove. “ I want you all to stand down and you will only display your side arms. All other weapons are to be locked as per travel protocol. We are going to diffuse this and bring it to an end.”

Agent Stove moved away and was quickly on the phone to the Acting director's office.

Agent Greene spoke with the other agents and answered questions as to what they should do and what they were allowed to do. He assured them this was a legitimate change and showed them the paperwork. He explained how this was looking in middle America and how the President needed a break from all this along with the terrorist attacks. It was all too much at one time. He wanted to diffuse this issue and let the whole registration scheme cool down, then concentrate on the terrorism. Most of the agents looked relieved. They knew this was turning into a bad situation that could turn into another Ruby Ridge or WACO. Agent Stove could be heard cursing in the background.

"Alright men, let's get to work and get the gear stowed. I want a count as soon as they are secured." A chorus of "yes, sirs" greeted his orders and the agents began to go about getting gear stowed and placed in secure travel containers. Agent Charles Langford had been an agent for less then two years and had been worried with this action. He was happy that Agent Greene was in charge. Agent Stove was too gungho on this whole issue of disarming the public.

Langford had complained a few times about the tactics that Agent Stove had used and was told that the agency had investigated and found no problem. More often then not, he was told that Agent Stove was the right kind of ATF agent and he should be learning from him, not complaining about him. Agent Langford began to secure the guns in the cases in the back of the SUV. The agents were milling around and talking amongst themselves. Most were happy this was over. They handed the MP5s over to Langford who, since he was low man, was securing the gear. He had collected all the gear, except for the gun that Agent Stove had been issued.

Agent Greene and Sheriff Timmons walked out to the reporters and explained that this was going to be a verification process and nothing more. If the guns are legal, they will be left. One of the reporters asked “ Does this mean the President has given into these radicals that are involved in terrorism?”

Agent Greene responded, “ I am not aware that any of the terrorism has been found to be from American gun owners. If you have any actual proof, I would be happy to see it. These people are gun owners, nothing more. I will not speak for the President on anything else”

They met up with the Captain as he stood at the gate and waited for his brother to come down the dirt road. Two men emerged from the large cabin and began the walk down towards the gate.

JR leaned down to Agent Greene, “ the one on the right is my brother, Dan Roberts.”

Agent Greene nodded and waited for the men to get closer. As they approached the gate, Agent Greene extended his hand towards Dan Roberts. Dan reached out and took the hand and gave it a firm shake.

“Dan, my name is Agent Greene. I am pleased that you allowed me to come here to try and diffuse this whole situation.”

Dan replied “ Agent, I am glad to meet you. The sheriff has asked me to work with you on an earlier proposal and we look forward to the end of this.”

They parted their hands and Agent Greene extended his hand towards the other man. Caleb Boone did not extend his hand. He eyed the Agent warily. Agent Greene could see that he had his hand on his side arm and could see the stain from his chew.

“ Agent, you will pardon me, but almost getting shot in the back a few days ago by one of your agents has me a little on the defensive.” Boone said.

“ I can only say I am sorry. Frankly, I do not blame you for being concerned, but I am truly here to solve this and nothing more.” Agent Greene said with a serious and somber tone.

To the amazement of Dan and his brother, Caleb extended his hand and shook hands with the agent. The four men walked back up the road towards the cabin. The quiet procession was broken when Caleb asked about how this was going to work and if the agent was going to agree to the terms worked out with the sheriff last week.

“ Caleb, when I spoke with Sheriff Timmons he told me you all had agreed to allow me to view all weapons and check the serial numbers against a national database of stolen weapons. If any come back as suspect, I will have to confiscate them. If none do, then I leave here emptyhanded.” Agent Greene explained.

“As simple as that... You are okay leaving empty handed.” Caleb replied.

“Yep, as simple as that, and I will be fine if this day ends and not one gun comes back suspect.” Greene explained.

Agent Langford had finished storing all the MP5 except for the one from Agent Stove. He had looked around the camp and asked the other agents if they had seen Agent Stove. One of the agents thought they had seen Stove back near the SUV, sitting on the bumper talking with ATF headquarters and look pretty pissed, they added. Agent Langford walked to the SUV Stove had arrived in and walked to the back where he saw the senior agent hanging up the phone, then tossing it to the ground.

“Sir, I am sorry to interrupt.” Agent Langford said in a low even tone. Trying to not betray the anxiety he had right now. “ Sir, I am required to store all weapons and yours is the last one.”

Agent Stove looked into the eyes of the young agent. “You are what is wrong with this agency, you and your gun owner loving Agent Greene.” the agent spat. "Here take it and leave me alone. I am getting out of here, away from this fiasco."

Agent Langford took the MP5 and was about to head back to the other SUVs until he looked sideways in the back window. He looked and had to look again to be sure, but he saw it. In the back of the SUV was an M21 Tactical Springfield rifle. Langford had seen the agent shooting it on the range. Stove said he was testing it for use in these confiscations.

“Agent, I am sorry, but I will need to secure that rifle also.”

Agent Stove looked up from the ground and reached back towards the rifle. Agent Langford was relived that he was going to relinquish the gun without any trouble. Langford walked back to the end of the SUV and was reaching for the gun when a sharp stabbing pain in his right side doubled him over. He looked down and saw the hilt end of a knife in the agent's hand and blood coming from a wound in his side. As he tried to open his mouth to scream, Agent Stove produced a taser with his right hand and hit him solidly in the chest sending him down to his knees and gasping for air.

“You brought this on yourself,” Agent Stove said angrily before kicking the agent in his bloody side. He grabbed the MP5 and the Springfield and took off down a dirt path near the SUV. He knew if he was able to get about 25 yards down the path there was a place he could cross and not be seen going to the woods in front of the main cabin. His job was not over, he was going to show these people what kind of danger these gun nuts were. He was going to take out Agent Greene and then he could tell whatever story he wanted. He would spin it that the people lured the Agent up to the cabin and then shot him. He ran down the dirt path, then crossed over towards the compound and moved into the woods.

Agent Greene and the others arrived at the main building and waited to go in as Caleb knocked on the metal door. The door opened slowly and a woman welcomed them in, waving them forward with her hand. In her hand was a gleaming colt 45. Agent Greene proceeded without a hesitation and entered the main room.

“That is a very nice colt ma'am... I have one similar that my father passed down to me,” Agent Greene said.

“Thank you. This belongs to my brother; he wanted me to take care of it for him while he is overseas.” She said back.

Agent Greene walked into the room and nodded to everyone, looking at the array of weapons on the table before him. There were several handguns and long guns and a few that he was not quite sure of. He was sure a couple of the Stearlings looked like they had been made from kits and done beautifully.

Dan spoke up, '”This is all of the weapons, except for the ones the people are carrying. That list is on the clipboard next to the laptop. We have a total of 75 weapons.”

JR added, “ As an officer of the court I attest that I have searched and these are all the weapons and those numbers are all correct.”

“Well, then let's get this going and get it done,” agent Greene said. “deputy, if you will read off numbers to me, I will check them on the database.”

The two men set out checking the numbers and verifying each gun. As the agent had surmised, several of the guns were made from kits and the people had followed the rules and given them a serial number. The television was droning on in the background. Agent Greene had opted for a radio instead of an earpiece communicator. He had set the radio down on the table when he started the process of verification. After some 40 minutes they had all of the guns listed in the database and verified but one.

The radio crackled and Agent Greene picked it up and clicked the receiver button. “This is Agent Greene”

“Agent Greene... Agent Langford is down! He has been stabbed and one of the MP5's are gone, along with what looks to be a Springfield Tactical,” one of the agents called over the radio.

“Are all agents accounted for … could this have been a robbery or something?”

Chapter 31 part 2

“No sir, Agent Strove is nowhere to be found...it looks like he may have done this. Langford said his name coming in and out of consciousness. We have Langford in an ambulance right now and they are taking him to the nearest hospital. Do you want us to search for Stove?”

“Yes, look around. He is to be considered armed and dangerous. Let the other officers down there know and make sure that someone slips and lets the newspeople know what happened. Do not cross into the woods. I will ask the people here to watch for him over here... no one on this side of the woods is that clear.” Agent Greene said.

“Yes sir, I will let them all know... out.”

“Okay, let's finish this first and then worry about this madman outside. All of the guns check out, but this S&W 357. Who does that belong to?” Agent Greene asked.

“That would be mine,” everyone turned to look at Caleb.

“ I am sorry, Dan. I had no idea it was stolen, my good-for-nothing brother told me the ex-wife let him keep it and he traded me for an old car I had.” Caleb explained.

“The ex-wife lives in Indiana, I am guessing,” Agent Greene inquired.

“Yep.”

Agent Greene took the stainless steel gun, checked to make sure it was empty and pitched it to the Sheriff.

“Get in touch with this ex please and see what she wants to do. She has a felony, so she cannot own it. If she wants to sell it she can, but it needs to go through an FFL... clear” as he looked from the sheriff to over at Caleb.

Caleb spoke, ”will do. She and I were pretty close ...I will call and ask and get it transferred.”

“Good, we are done. Now what do we do about this nut running around in the woods?”

Dan started to speak when one of the other members called over and said something about the news. Everyone got up and moved closer to the small television they had in the back corner.

This is CNN breaking news... Tyler, Texas a pre-dawn ATF raid has ended with a decorated WWII vet in critical condition hanging onto life and many more questions than answers. The Sheriff gave a short news conference about an hour ago. It seems that six agents from the ATF had come to do a gun registration and inspection around 2 a.m. or thereabouts. The owner met them with a shotgun and here is where it gets sketchy. The Dallas ATF office says their men said they were threatened, but a video has surfaced that shows the ATF men shooting the man in his back as he was moving back into his home. We will bring you more when we have an update. The President's speech that had been scheduled for 10 est has now been moved up and we expect to hear remarks from the president at any time. One more item, all of the agents involved in this have been taken into custody.

One of the anchors broke in, “did I hear you correctly that the federal agents have been arrested by the local authorities?”

"Yes, you did. They have been arrested and will be arraigned later today."

The shot came back to the news room and the people started talking and surmising about what happened and if the federal agents could be charged.

Agent Greene swore under his breath.

“That is what happens when too many people think then can do what they want and no one is running anything.” The Agent said to no one in particular.

“You think this was not planned?” Dan came back.

“Nope, I think the assistant that talked with me yesterday was plain enough. They have too much happening now to start a civil war with the gun owners. I will bet this speech will be that someone did not listen to what was said and that in the end somebody gets thrown under the bus for not listening,” Agent Greene replied.

JR and Dan passed worried looks as the agent began getting his gear together.

“So we are done?” JR asked.

“Yep, we are done. Get that one fixed. I will put it down as a family issue in my notes. Now I have to go down that hill and find this roque agent before he does any more harm.”

As Agent Greene got his last words out a barrage of 308 came crashing into the side of the main building. Everyone ducked and went for the front wall which was fortified best. Another five or six rounds hit the side of the house as glass shattered from a short burst from the MP5. People began to move crouched down and close the shutters from within to seal up the building. Agent Greene, with his back to the main wall, pulled his 45 and returned fire out of one of the firing holes. Several people were now in the process of loading the guns from the table. Caleb had grabbed an AR and ran out towards a back exit. He knew that this should only be the one guy and he was going to try and make it to the roof for a better vantage point. Dan and JR had now also started to fire out the port holes to keep the shooter's head down until Caleb could make the roof. Caleb made the back door and climbed the ladder that was on the wall beside it. He was up the ladder and on the roof quickly. He crawled to the front in time to see the flash from a three shot volley from the 308. Inside one of the children had become scared and had stopped in the main doorway. Although the door would take a battering ram to break down, it was not impervious to a 308 it seemed, when the next rounds came one went through the door and through the calf of the young child.

The young child’s screams made everyone in the room stop and turn. JR was the first to grab the boy and moved him to a safer point. Then he called for some towels and wrapped them around the wound. One of the women, a nurse it seemed, took the child to the other room and worked on him as more rounds hit the house. JR grabbed one of the Remington 700 off the table and opened a slightly larger port in the wall. He scanned the foliage and thought he could make out a figure about 75 yards to the right front of the building. About this time Caleb fired a quick five rounds burst that hit just in front of where JR was looking. The figure laid still and JR continued to watch. Another three rounds from Caleb hitting closer and the figure moved rolling to his right. JR followed with the scope as the figure stopped. JR could see flashes from a gun and heard the round hit the house.

“Agent, are you sure none of your men are in the woods?” JR asked.

“One second .. This is Agent Greene, are all Agents clear of the woods in front of the cabin... I need all agents accounted for.”

“Two agents went with Langford and the rest of us are over near the reporters. None of your agents are in that area … obviously we have no idea where Agent Stove is,” one of the agents replied.

“None of my men are out there, so if you have a target, shoot it.”

JR leveled the rifle and steadied it on the rim of the shooting hole. He could see the figure was loading more ammo into the two guns and was about to move.

Agent Stove was moving around the main building of the compound and trying to get some access to the side wall. Some of the shots he had fired were getting in, but the main wall seemed to be pretty well made to withstand most rifle fire. These local rednecks... he would show them... he was going to make them know they were in a war with the real bad asses. Once he worked his way around he needed to make sure he took out Agent Greene and then he could spin any story he wanted. Hell, he would pin Langford's death on Agent Greene as well. He smiled an inward smile. He had done it enough times. When there was not evidence, he just made some up and that would be what happened here. He would make sure some illegal guns showed up on this property, even if they had to be his illegal guns. His guns now loaded, he crouched to his feet and moved to the edge of the tree. He moved forward...one step was all he took. He did not fully understand at first that he had been shot. As he stepped from the safety of the tree, the deputy had fired. The 308 catching him in the left side and passing through both lungs and bisecting a main artery. His body had spun and he lay on his back looking towards the sky. As he lay in the cool leaves and grass, he saw Agent Greene and several other standing over him. Agent Greene saw the ground soaked with blood and knew that Stove was dying. He looked down with some sadness. Agent Stove attempted to raise the MP5 still clutched in his hand. JR kicked it away.

“You are a disgrace.. even now when you lay there dying...” Agent Greene shook his head.

Agent Stove with his last remaining breath and blood, ”I am the true patriot. You and these gun owning yokels will see, we will never stop until we take every gun.” Blood drooled from his mouth as he angrily cursed at Agent Greene with his last remaining words.

“Sheriff, can you get your coroner please?” Agent Greene requested.

The Sheriff nodded and walked back down the road to his squad car. Agent Greene stepped off a few paces and called the Presidential Advisor that had placed him in this situation to begin with.

“Agent Greene it is good to hear from you. Is everything alright and did you have any trouble?”

Direct and to the point Greene still liked him against his better judgment. “Yes everything went well. One illegal gun and that was more of a family issue, who claimed it.. the person who reported it stolen had a felony so she cannot own it. The sheriff is going to keep track until they can find out if she will sell it to the family member in the compound. They promised to go through an FFL.”

“Excellent.”

“One bad thing, Agent Stove went a bit crazy. He stabbed one of the other agents and shot up the main lodge. He was shot by a local deputy. What do you want me to tell the press? They are obviously going to ask.”

No response.

“Tell them just what you told me. Agent Stove did not like the President changing his mind, attacked the compound and was killed by a local deputy.”

Agent Greene began to think of what he should ask but then he just decided to anwer “ will do.”

“Good. I look forward to a lunch when you are back in town. Thanks again and I hope your retirement is good,” the line was dead.

Agent Greene greeted the reporters and let them ask their questions over and over again. It was the same answer each and every time. All the guns were legal, save one, and that was more of an issue of who really owned the gun. The local sheriff would be working that one out. Agent Stove had not liked being replaced and did not like the new direction of the administration to stop the gun registrations. He became unstable and dangerous and finally attacked the compound, hurting a small child. He was fired upon by a local deputy and killed. After ten times of answering the same question and now more then a few times from the same weaselly left-wing robot, the agent replied. “ what part of this are you having trouble comprehending? Agent Stove tried to kill innocent people because he did not want them to own perfectly legal guns. He shot a small child and may have killed a fellow agent. That is all. I am going to the hospital to check on my agent.” waving his hand as he walked to one of the Suburbans.

JR stood close and extended his hand. ”I am glad they sent you to get this done.”

The two men shook hands as JR continued, “ I hope your man is alright.”

“Me too... thanks deputy.”

Chapter 32 part 1

Chapter 32

JT woke up to an early morning sun. He was not one that liked early days; he was more of the night owl, but he had things to do today and needed to get moving. He walked downstairs and started to go with the cold cereal, but decided on a power bar and a Mountain Dew. The doctor gave in to him with drinking a Dew now and then and today at this time of day he laughed to himself he needed a dew. He walked into the living room and was shocked to see his son sitting finishing a bowl of Cheerios.

“Hey dad, just got up early to take mom out to the range.” Dan said.

“ I appreciate it, son. I am going to meet Sheriff Boland and see about some other things I want to get squared away. I think we are pretty good with basics and food, but like I said I would love to some more fuel. I have to say this to you, if this lasts a long time, we are going to run out at some point.“ JT looked down and worried as he chomped on the powerbar.

“I know, dad, but we have that old VW diesel truck that we have held onto forever. I know it cannot haul a lot, but it still runs and drives alright. We could order one of those kits to make it able to run biodiesel easier,” his son explained. ” We also have that small dirt bike and regular peddle bikes and the neighbor has a few horses. If things go bad, we could trade that coffee we bought on clearance for a horse,” his son continued with a smile now on his face.

“Yeah, it is still a good old truck and that would allow for use of other oils, if it came to it. Try and look that up today to see what it costs. You might be right though, he drinks a lot of coffee he might just get so hard up for coffee he would make that trade,” JT laughed.

“Will do.” Dan seemed unsure if he wanted to ask the next question. "Dad, are they going to keep coming after you…us?”

His dad looked down and back up with a somewhat sad expression on his face. “I think the people that are doing this and the people that are backing them from inside our government and around the world cannot leave it as it is. I think they have to try to kill me and that woman, Jeanie, from Arizona who killed those two.”

Dan looked up. “Yeah, she may have added to her total last night,” he said with a slight smile. “It appears a mosque in Minnesota somewhere near the mall of American had a late night visitor with a 22 and a knife. Two people were killed; one with the knife, one who was shooting at a fleeing suspect with an AK47 was shot in the head with a 22 that no one apparently heard. It was all over the main news and then some of the militia sites had more information but mostly speculation. They do seem to like her and, well, you get pretty high marks in their books.”

“Remember Dan, if they can build you up, they can tear you down if you do not tow their line. I am with the militias in a lot of areas, but I am going to protect my family against any threat. I have no time to be a poster boy for anything. If I can help congeal a movement back to “We The People” I will do all I can, but my first responsibility is to my family and their protection.” JT responded with a hint of anger. He hated that this had encompassed his family and that he was talked about nationwide in the same sentence as this Jeanie Reynolds. If last night was truly her, she was taking the battle to them. He was content in trying to hunker down and protect his family from these psychopaths.

Dan looked over towards his father and studied his face. The worry lines on his forehead and cheeks seemed more prominent these days. His eyes carried a distant worry. His son knew his dad was concerned about the terrorists trying again, but he had to know that his fighting back had inspired so many. Maybe not into action yet, but people were talking and making plans to help their neighbors, to try and protect their community. People were getting involved. Those men in Missouri had gone hunting for terrorists and had been lucky enough to have killed two. There was talk of charges for a single day, but the Governor and officials were inundated with calls and maybe a few threats of unrest if they attempted to do anything to these heroes. Even younger people were starting to ask the hard questions, why are we letting them tell us lies and we know they are lies, why are they lying, what do they have to hide? He knew he dad was unsure of his place in all this and he did not know how to tell him that all he needed to do was continue to fight the good fight.

“Dan...dan...hey, turn up the tv,” his dad was saying to him. Dan came back to reality and reached down for the remote and un-muted the television.

CNN News Breaking news
We have very little new on the early morning shooting of the WWII vet in Tyler Texas by a group of ATF Agents. They have been arraigned and will be held until the state decides how to proceed. The Attorney General of the United States called their arraignment unprecedented and irresponsible. Now we go to the White House with the President.

“My fellow Americans, I come to you much earlier then I had anticipated today and with a heavy heart. Last night a tragedy happened in Tyler, Texas. A veteran was approached by members of the ATF who were involved with the gun verification and registration presidential order. In the process of that he was shot. I have been told the details are still being investigated, along with a video that is purported to show the entire episode. What is known is that an American citizen was injured in what was to be a very easy and quick process. I have, however, been hearing from many fronts that the American people are concerned and suspicious of this presidential order. I have for my entire career viewed gun ownership as an outdated part of our beloved Bill Of Rights and Constitution - one that had outlived its day. I have argued for stronger and stronger gun control laws and wanted this to be a step toward asking the people to consider giving up some of the extremely dangerous assault weapons in the hands of common people in our neighborhoods. I had hoped to start a conversation, but this is now become a distraction from other more pressing matters. The situation in eastern Kentucky is being dealt with as we speak. I have a special Agent who has been tasked to go down and diffuse the situation. I have let the director of the FBI and the ATF know that I am, at this time, rescinding my order for this registration. I was going to announce that today at 10 am; but was told a few hours ago that this incident happened last night, and decided to come to you as soon as I could. I will be asking the Attorney General to appoint a special investigator to find out how this tragedy happened. If there is someone to blame, they will be held accountable. I have asked him to work with the Republican members in the House to find a suitable person that is above reproach and who will give this the attention it requires.

Once again I renew my support of making it more difficult for guns to cause carnage on our streets, but this is not the time to be distracted with the unprecedented attacks on American soil and the economic turmoil that has surprisingly happened out of the changes in the middle east. One last point, I will inform the Attorney General that at this time the agents who were involved in this tragedy will be held in the custody of the Texas Rangers, working in conjunction with the Tyler, Texas police until this can be sorted out.

God bless America.”

Dan sat there for some time before he looked over at his father. “ What was that all about? He kind of said "sorry" and stopped this registration scheme and kind of said it was a good idea, just bad timing.”

“They have several problems all at once and frankly they can't seem to handle any of them. I would bet they had more than just the places we had been told about giving them problems. I would lay a good wager that some of the strong militia places had not gone well and they may be locked in some type of stalemate in other places. You and I have both have read about the stories from Texas where they have exchanged limited gun fire. Even if those are truly limited exchanges, the news could start looking at them at any time. Then the President is dealing with terrorists on American soil that he does not want to admit are Islamic fanatics and coming close to some type of civil war with gun owners. On top of all that are the economic issues.”

JT chowed down on the last of the power bar and took a drink of the Mt Dew. He had on a pair of jeans and a t-shirt with his work boots and had thrown a larger jean shirt over it. Dan looked at his dad and worried he had seemed different lately. He was sure the concern for the safety of his family was causing him stress, but Dan was unsure how to lessen that for his father.

“Dan, I am going to head down to the range and talk to this Sheriff and he what he wants with me. Make sure you work with mom today on shooting. I know she may make some excuses, but I need this done.”

“Dad, I will take care of it. She is going to be up in about half and hour and we are going out." Dan looked down as his father turned and saw for the first time in a while the shiny revolver. “Nice to see you have your gun back.”

“Yeah it is, it was a present from an FBI agent,” his dad said as he walked out the back door, leaving his son with his mouth hanging open wanting to ask so many questions to that last statement.

JT drove the short distance down to Knob Creek gun range, then pulled around the back toward the pavilion where they set up the booths for the machine gun shoots. Sheriff Robert Boland was standing beside a large dually Ford. He wore a brown on brown top and bottom with the badge prominent. He also wore what looked like a rather large 44 revolver on his hip. JT had not noticed when he was laying in the hospital bed that this was a pretty big fellow. He would guess six foot four maybe and two hundred eighty pounds. JT pulled the Blazer next to the Ford, stepped down out of the vehicle and walked towards the sheriff. It was hard to make out if anyone was in the truck that the sheriff stood beside because the windows were black. JT was sure it was not in compliance with the Kentucky law, he smiled.

JT extended a hand, ”I got your message... nice to see you again Sheriff.”

Boland shook JT's hand. “I am glad you did. I wanted to talk with you, but did not want to ask you to come to the station. I hate to sound too paranoid, but better safe than sorry.”

“Not a problem,” JT replied. “What can I do for you, Sheriff?”

Sheriff Boland considered his words carefully. “ JT, I know that you have not sought out the spotlight in this whole issue with the shooting. You have tried to stay in the background and let your actions speak for you, unless those bastards backed you into a corner like the FBI tried to do.”

JT could hear the "but" hanging in the air like.

“ JT, we need you to do something, a radio show, youtube or something. Your words will carry weight and right now the people have no idea what to do.”

JT looked down. He had worried this would be the path this discussion took. “Sheriff, if I were so inclined and I am not saying I am, what would I tell the people? I mean going out and saying "sorry guys, someone flushed the toilet and we are going down the drain" is not something I think the people want to hear.”

The Sheriff smiled. “No, it may be to the point, but we were looking for something a bit more hopeful. Maybe it is enough to go on and tell the people that there is hope and to help each other and try to prepare for some long term disruptions. If we can get people working together, and not this me, me, me mentality, we may be able to get through this with the country intact.”

“Do you actually believe that?” JT asked.

“Yes I do, if we can get people to try and help each other get by we can save some of the smaller cities. This economy is collapsing around us - gas is at five dollars now and could be going to eight or ten dollars a gallon. Communities will have to be closer again, not this urban sprawl we have had. Community farms, farmers markets running year round, people learning to preserve and can again.”

“Sheriff, people have been telling people that for five years and no one seems to ever listen.” JT responded.

“Yes, but they were not getting shot going to the store or to work. Or they were not having the lights stop working. My men and I can only do so much. We need the people to help and I think if you start the conversation, we can get that help. We have to let the people know they can fight back in many ways and they must fight back,” Boland said.

JT flared, bristling with a show of anger, “and if they get killed fighting back or they kill the wrong person, who has that blood on their hands....me. I fought people that attacked me, but if we start telling people to fight the wrong people, they may get hurt and that falls back on me.”

The sheriff raised his hands. “JT, I did not want to upset you. I have been in the police business for twenty plus years and have only had to pull my gun once and never had to use it. I have no idea all the things you are feeling, having killed those men and now having all of this on your shoulders. There must be an overwhelming urge to hunker down and wait it out. To protect your family. I do get it, but I think you are the kind that stands in the face of trouble. That sitting and waiting is not your makeup. All I am asking is that you consider going on air and telling the people it is okay to be prepared and to work with local communities to try and get through this.”

His anger subsided some now ,“and who should they trust ,Sheriff?” JT asked.

“Tell them to work to get groups going and work with local Sheriffs. We can police the local groups and if someone is out of line, we can take care of it. I know this is a lot, but if we can get people working together who are out of work or recently unemployed, then we can stave off the riots and crime we are already seeing tearing down the larger cities. They are not reporting that some parts of Detroit are now burned to the ground. The police are no longer taking calls. 15% of the city's population now lives in a no man's land, no fire, no police and it is getting bad. Cities as close as Cincinnati are having daily riots. The truckers are not driving unless they can have escorts, and frankly, no one is stepping forward. FEMA has tried to help, but they cannot meet all the challenges. Remember that gang skirmish that the local media did one story about? Well, it was a FEMA camp for people that were out of their house for power or other reasons and needed electricity on like for home ventilators. Two rival gangs came in and shot the place up, stole equipment and twenty people were killed,” the sheriff replied.

JT had remembered that story; nothing special but a gang shooting; he had wondered then if there was more to the story. He was sure Boland was telling the truth. The other media were talking about some of these things and how some of the larger cities were already in the early stages of complete collapse. They could not sustain the massive political framework that it took to run such massive and expensive machines.

JT stood in silence next to the Sheriff and studied his face for what seemed like a long time. “ Sheriff, are you part of a larger militia group?”

Sheriff Boland smiled. “Paula was right, you are quick. Yes, I am and have been for quite some time. Paula has worked with us and so has the doctor she works for. I know it may have an ominous tone, but we have tried to be at all levels of the community. We are not what you see on television. We are not the gung ho Rambo type idiots. We get people that have knowledge they can teach to others, we do have groups that train others. We have been trying to wake people up to the fact that the government that has been milking us blind was going to fall under its own weight and nothing could stop that. It is all about being prepared, because if people are not prepared when the UN or whoever comes in and feeds them and keeps them warm, they will not worry about what they are giving up until it is gone.”

JT smiled. he had said the same thing to his wife only days back.

“Okay, I am in for whatever that is. I will work with you and try to help, but I will remind you I am a reluctant hero at best. I will also caution you, as long as our paths lay in the same direction, I will do what I can, but if my path goes another direction to protect my family, I will follow it,” JT said.

“That is all we can ask,” Boland replied.

“One more thing JT, did you see the morning news about the shooting in Texas?” Boland asked.

“Yes... about the WWII vet and that ATF crap,” JT replied.

“We are going to make a visit to the local offices of the ATF and FBI to let them know any excursions into the community will be monitored, and if need be, interdicted. We are not going to have any of that here . I know we do not have the Governor that some states do, but he knows not to back the feds too far. The local Mayor is to busy covering his ass with the calamity caused by that DA they hired. I know you have a relationship with a local FBI agent, Tim Smith. ”

It was more of a question from Boland then a statement.

JT weighed the answer to that question.” I am not sure how I feel answering that. Suffice it to say, that if you go and have a talk with the agents if Agent Smith is concerned for his safety and my feelings or response matters, I will not like that at all. I would take that as a personal slap in the face.”

“Good enough, and for the record, how you feel about things and your words hold a good deal of sway to many people.” Boland remarked. “ Thanks for coming down and meeting me. If you need to get in touch with m,e contact Paula. She can do so without raising too much attention.”

JT watched the retreating truck and walked back towards his Chevy. At the last minute he decided to walk over and headed into the shop to look around. He had not been in since the shooting, but remembered his wife had said she ran into the guys from Knob Creek and that they had sent their prayers. A few old timers sat around the benches. There were some people paying at the counter as he came through the door. The people eyed him and many waved as he walked through the door. He headed back and picked up some lead bullets to reload some 38 and found that they had a box of golden saber for reloading 357. He picked up both and headed back towards the front of the shop. He was set on reloading suppplies, but he could always use some more bullets since he was shooting more these days. One of the guys, he always forgot his name, was behind the register. He said hello and reached over to shake his hand. JT placed his items down and shook the man's hand.

“That was some good shooting, glad you made it okay,” the man said.

“I appreciate that, as far as the shooting I think I got lucky and the man up stairs was watching out for me that day.” JT answered back with a smile.

JT saw Kenny come in and waved and said his greetings as he was being rung up for his purchases.

“I have something that you might want to look at,” Kenny said.

Kenny reached under the counter and handed him a short lever action rifle. It was a Rossi Ranch Hand, he had looked at one online when they first came out. JT took the rifle..pistol and worked the lever, feeling the smooth operation as he held it and felt the weight.

JT said, “that is nice and in the 38/357 I wanted too.”

“Yes it is, and it would make a nice gun to have in that Blazer of yours,” Kenny responded. A knowing look and JT knew that Kenny was making more of a statement on the goingson of the last few days and was saying that JT needed something to carry in his truck and this might just be it. Maybe he was correct.

“Yep, it would look nice in that Blazer of mine.” JT added.

JT laid the gun down on the counter next to his other purchases and asked for the 4473 form. Once it was all filled out and the call was made to the FBI, he paid for his purchase and headed out the door.

“Keep it close,” Kenny said

JT looked back and nodded, “thanks for keeping it for me.”

JT headed back to the Chevy and climbed in with his new toy and reloading supplies. He was sure Anne would not approve, but the rifle would fit well behind the front seat. It would be a good truck rifle, and with some good 357, would make a formidable addition. JT headed back towards home. He wanted to see if he could email Jeanie. Maybe he could get her to do some kinda of show with him. That would be one step he could take. He pulled up into the drive and parked near the house. He grabbed the supplies and pistol and walked towards the back door. He could hear someone shooting at the range as he put the reloading parts down and walked back to the range to see who was there. He walked around the bush and down the small path and could make out his wife and son shooting. He watched in silence as she fired off round after round into the six inch target. No matter how much she had lived in a house that had not liked guns, she was a natural. He was amazed when he had first taken her to the range how quickly she adjusted and settled into shooting. She was still just as relaxed. His only concern had always been, could she do it in a real firefight? He sighed and only hoped it would never come to that. He walked up behind them as they reloaded the magazines and attempted to kissed his wife around her earmuffs. She was startled at first, then pulled off the offending earmuff and kissed and hugged him back. Well, that was until she saw the gun in his hand.

“Mister, just what is that?” Anne asked in a less than pleasant tone, but not mad.

“Well, apparently Kenny was holding this for me and so I felt I had to take it,” JT responded with a smile.

“Oh, so he did,” she said with her hands firmly on her hips.

“I think he thought I needed it after the little issue at Feeders Supply,” he said, raising his eyebrow.

“Dad, that is so cool! That is one of the Rossi Ranch Hand pistols,” his son added in.

“It looks more like a rifle to me,” said his wife.

“Well, it has a twelve inch barrel and is classified as a pistol.” JT explained.

chapter 32 part 2

JT removed two of the speed-loaders and released the 357 rounds onto the table. He loaded the Rossi and carefully worked the lever action. The gun was too short to hold as a rifle, but you could hold it down a little above the waist and shoot and work the action. He worked through the action and all the rounds ejected smoothly. He reloaded them and asked his son to place one of the offending frozen jugs downrange. He fired the first shot and hit in front of the jug. The 357 round caused the front to jump just a small amount. It felt like a nice fit. He worked the action and another round down towards the jug and he hit the base of it, shattering the whole bottom. He shot three more times and the jug was gone. His son took a couple of shots. Then his wife even wanted to take a couple of shots with it. Although his wife was still not completely okay, she did think it was a nice addition and if he kept it in his truck for protection, it was alright.

Anne land forward and kissed his cheek. ”Happy get well present.”

They walked back to the house and he laid the gun in the back room that he used to clean the guns before putting them away. His son, somewhat out of character, volunteered to clean all the guns. He and his wife walked towards the kitchen.

“How did the meeting go?” Anne asked.

“It was kind of what I feared, they want me to speak out, get people to try and work together on a local level and help each other out.” JT recalled.

“So what are you going to do?” she asked.

“I would love to do nothing more then hunker down, but I doubt that is going to be possible, so I guess I am going to see what I can do. I am going to contact the radio lady and see if she will do a show with me., JT said.

Jeanie smiled and kissed him. She walked away towards the kitchen. “Drop her a line and then come up for some lunch.”

JT walked down to the computer and send a quick email, asking how her night went, then posed the question if she would help him do some type of show. Nothing special, just something to let the people know that they are not alone and that they and their neighbors are the best home to come through these perilous times. He sat down and loaded up the speed-loaders with 38 and 357 ammo. Then he sat back in the recliner and felt some peace for the first time in quite a while.

While JT sat back in his recliner... at a restaurant across town five FBI agents were just arriving to meet with Sheriff Boland. He had asked them to come to talk about a case. He was sure when they found out the real reason their pleasant nature and demeanor would change. Agent Tim Smith pulled up in his sedan and started to walk towards the entrance of the restaurant. As he got closer to the entrance, he noticed a Sheriff's deputy standing outside smoking and nodded as he got closer.

“Agent Smith?” the deputy asked.

“Yeah, that’s me.” Tim said as he stopped in front of the deputy.

“We can go in this way,” motioned the agent to the side entrance with a courtyard.

The two walked around the right side of the restaurant and into a small courtyard that was deserted except for another deputy sitting at a small table. Agent Smith began to sense something was up. He knew several other FBI agents should have made it here before him. He was positive that one of the cars in the parking lot was FBI, yet none were out here. Why would a deputy be waiting for him outside?

The Agent began to move his hand back towards his glock. Captain Leo Mason had worked with the Sheriff almost ten years and was a trusted friend. He stood 5' 10'' and had the lean body of a runner. He had completed several derby mini marathons and even competed in a couple of triathlons. He had a boyish face that hid the fact he was an accomplished hand to hand combat specialist. He had taken classes through the Sheriff's department and then went on from there. He had worked in judo, hopkido as well as many others. His latest was mixed martial arts and he was proficient at all. What Captain Mason had found was that the training had made him very watchful. He watched peoples hands, their shoulders how tense they were, and what their face told him. T he Sheriff had asked him to handle the talk with Agent Smith. The guy from the mall shootings seemed to have made a friend in Smith and another Agent that tried to help when he was about to be railroaded. Jerome Tanner, yeah that was the guy's name, had wanted to make sure Agent Smith was informed that in no way was anyone threatening him. If anything went down between the two groups, he would be informed and told to stay away. The Captain smiled, Agent Smith was a cautious fellow. While walking, he had allowed his hand to move closer to this sidearm without actually moving for it. It was small and mostly imperceptible.

“Agent Smith, I assure you there is no danger here. The sidearm will not be needed.” Captain Mason said with a hint of southern drawl.

Agent Smith eyed the deputy with caution, but came closer. As the deputy waved his hand gesturing towards a chair, Smith sat down across from him.

Agent Smith was still somewhat apprehensive, “ what is this all about...”

“I am Captain Mason and I work with Sheriff Boland. He is in there right about now telling your co-workers and the head of the local ATF office that the stunt that happened in Tyler, Texas overnight will not happen here. He is informing them that they live in this community and they should understand that if the shooting starts and they are on the wrong side of this, they will be given no safe passage. Also that if they go out on one of these so-called raids, they may find more people with guns than just the homeowner.

Agent Smith sat back in his chair with a look of astonishment. The local Sheriffs were saying they would fire on federal agents. Well, more or less, they would protect the locals even from the agents. He smiled to himself. This will truly have the shit hitting the fan when Washington hears about this. However he now was more confused, if that was the case, what was he doing here and why had he been singled out?

Captain Mason saw the smile and then the worried look. He assumed that the agent had considered what DC was going to say and then what was going to happen to him.

“Agent Smith, I assure you, we mean you nor actually any of your agents, any harm but let's just say you are special. A friend of yours has assured the Sheriff that if any harm or threats were to come your way he would take it as a personal affront and be none to pleased,” The captain said slowly. “This friend has shown himself to be a true patriot and willing to lay down his life for his fellow citizen. Whether he knows it or not, many people are looking to him for some guidance and would follow him, if need be, into the fire.”

Agent Tim Smith sat back in the chair and smiled. These men were also militia. They would fight back if needed, against all enemies, foreign or domestic. Now he supposed he would also. Was that not what he and Agent Dawes decided when they helped Jerome Tanner? Had they not chosen a side when they tried to help him? Had they not put themselves and their careers in danger when they had found another security six for him and given him the number of a drop phone?

“I see Captain Mason, thank you for the heads up. I appreciate the concern. If I can return the favor, please let me know. I am sure I will be in touch with our friend soon and will let him know that I understand you will make sure I know if there are places I should not go to.” Agent Smith raised up out of the chair and reached a hand towards the Captain. “ I thank you.”

“Not at all, you have helped someone I consider a patriot, at the risk of your career and maybe your life. It was my pleasure and honor,” the Captain replied, “you should go now. The meeting will not last much longer. Call me if you need anything. Here is my card.”

Agent Smith walked back to his car quickly and drove away. He would come up with some reason why he was unable to make the meeting. He quickly called Agent Dawes.

“Harold, I need you to back me up that you and I talked over the last 30 or 40 minutes making me miss a meeting,” The Agent quickly explained.

“What did you stop off for a quickie and now need a backup story?“ Agent Dawes laughed.

“Nope, I met a Captain friend of your shootist today. He told me if anything goes down in this area, they will let me know to keep me out of harm's way.” Agent Smith replied.

Agent Dawes was no longer laughing. ”So you got a warning that if things go bad, you will be protected? Wow!”

“I was told it came from our mutual friend. He would be upset if they treated me badly,” the agent said with a slow even tone that belayed the thanks he felt to Tanner today.

“Yep, I will back you up. Tell them I had to have you go back to your house and check some information for me on some of the people we are tracking,” Agent Dawes said. “Be careful and call me later and fill me in on the phone.”

The Agents hung up the phones and Agent Smith drove back towards home. Back at the restaurant, the meeting was breaking up and the federal agents were stunned. They had been basically threatened by this local group of Sheriffs and Deputies. At the end this Sheriff Boland had simply said "if you start doing things here that put the American people in danger, we will come to you. We will not call Washington. We will come to you and fight on the side of the American people."

Chapter 33

CHAPTER 33

Jeanie Reynolds woke up half asleep watching the news. They were replaying the story from Texas and now they had some news about some ATF agent being shot by a deputy in Kentucky and killed. She raised up in bed and pulled her feet over the side. She was still dressed from the night before because she had literally collapsed when she lay down. The adrenalin rush of almost being killed had obviously worn off by the time they were back to her cabin. She walked towards the front of the house and called.

“Gael … Hey, where are you?” She said, walking closer to the front room. There was no answer and she became worried. She could not remember where she had put down her 45. She moved into the front room, but no one was there. The couch had been slept in, but not for some time. Her 45 was on the side table with a note under it.

J

Went to move the drop car and let some friends make sure it will never be found in one piece. Will be back soon.

Gael

Jeanie held the letter and decided he was right - the car should not stay where they left it even if it was a safe spot. She grabbed the 45 and tucked it in her pants, then walked off and took a much needed shower. She replayed the night before as the hot water washed away some of the pain from her tired and sore muscles. She had been careless and foolish, although she understood that could not be how this was handled. People would not care if the man was in Phoenix; the people had to be awakened to the dangers themselves. If there was still time.

How much longer could middle America function? People would not go to work to make money to pay for the gas to go to work. With gas in some places above $7, that is what many people were doing.

Jeanie walked into the kitchen, grabbed a bowl of cereal and sat down in the warm sun streaming through the kitchen window. She decided she would head up to her dad's house after her breakfast or lunch or what ever time it was. She had slept hard and looked over at the clock to see it just passing 1 pm . She wondered how long Gael had been gone, but then shook her head. He was one of her dad's favorite and knowledgeable students and could take care of himself. Jeanie got up and walked to her computer, checking the website's hits. She saw the counter had reached over one million and was going strong. She opened her email and saw an email from Dan.

Jeanie

Web site hitting all good marks. We are being traced but they are still swirling around Europe. Will let you know when they get close. Have made a honeypot for them to hit with some surprises if they go there.

Dan

Jeanie smiled. She would have to think of some way to thank him; maybe a VIP membership to Hooters. A laugh escaped her lips for the first time in a long while. She scanned the emails. A lot of them were spam, some she would have to answers later from friends. One she needed to open now.

Valkyrie;

I have been asked to maybe do some kind of show or you tube. My meeting with the sheriff was to ask me to say something let the people know to form local groups and support each other. I wanted to see if you could help. I hate to ask but you are the only one I know that does this sort of thing.

JT

Jeannie had hoped Sheriff Boland would convince JT to try and say something to the people. She was hearing more and more about the man fighting back on the militia sites and they needed direction. If they could get the people to help each other, it was possible that as bad as this was going to be, some of the collapse could be lessened. She and Gerry had met Boland and other Sheriffs of local communities from around the country at a seminar that Gerry hosted yearly. She had called the Sheriff after the last encounter JT had. She knew they would try again and wanted to make sure he had some backup if that happened.

Shootist;

It would be my pleasure. We can setup a show and broadcast live. I will get in touch with Dan and setup a time to get together on air.

Jeanie.

Jeanie drove up to her dad's house and tapped on the door. She half expected to see her father open the door and caught herself mid-sentence.

“Da... “ Jeanie stopped as she was surprised to see a very pretty woman open the door. The redhead stood 5' 8'' with long red hair and a pretty smile. She looked to be in good shape with a nice figure, but Jeanie could see she had well defined muscles in her arms and legs below the shorts.

“Hello you must be Jeanie, I'm Leslie, a friend of your dads. I drop by and leave a home cooked meal every now and then.” The redhead said.

“Hel....lo, I was looking for my dad. Is he home?” Jeanie was finally about to get out.

“Nope, darling. He should be back in a few minutes. He had to go to the gate to meet someone.” Leslie said with a distinct English accent.

Leslie waved the girl in. She could see Jeanie was a little shocked. Jeanie walked in and sat down at the table as Leslie sat across from her. An uneasy silence ensued.

Leslie felt she should say something, but she was not sure how much her father had told her. “Jeannie, I had hoped we would meet under better circumstances, but I am glad to finally meet you.”

“Finally … how long have … have you been fixing my dad meals?” Jeanie asked.

Leslie smiled at the phrase. “We met several months after your mother...” She choked up, “in a grief counseling session.”

Jeanie was shocked. She knew her father had been through a rough time with the passing of her mother, but her dad did not seem like the type for grief counseling. The door opened and her father walked into the room. He saw Leslie and smiled .

“Hey, thanks another home cooked meal,” he said with a smile. At that same time he saw his daughter sitting across from the red head. “Hey Jeanie, I see you two have met.”

“Yeah, Leslie was telling me how you met at a grief counseling session.,” Jeanie said.

Her dad looked down towards the floor.

“I am sorry, if I said anything I should not have said,” Leslie spoke up.

“I had a pretty bad time when your mom died. You were in school and getting on with the radio program and I began drinking some. Gael saw I was not taking care of myself so he came and sat down and talked with me. He said if I would go to some grief counseling sessions he would not call you, otherwise he was calling you. So I agreed to go and even though I thought it was a bunch of touchy feely hippy crap, there were things that the counselor said that made sense. Gael went with me the first time and then I went a few times and found one a little closer that the counselor recommended. He could see I was not the whole get-initouch with my feelings, but it was helping and he knew one that worked with veterans and police spouses and families.” He reached over and took Leslie’s hand. A twinge of jealousy sparked in Jeanie for a brief second. “I met Leslie a few weeks in, she helped prepare food for the group. She was not there all the time, but we chatted when she was. She had lost her husband nine years ago to an IED in Afghanistan.” Jeanie noticed a tear stream down the woman’s freckled cheek. “ We have went out some and become good friends. I was hoping this Thanksgiving to introduce you two.”

“Daddy I am sorry...” Jeanie began.

“It was not your place. You had grieved, we have grieved and I lost my way. Gael helped me find out that I was not betraying your mother by going on living,” he said.

Jeanie reached across the table and took Leslie’s other hand and gripped it firmly, then leaned forward and kissed it.

“I am so glad to meet you,” Jeanie said. No other words would ever be spoken. A moment passed between the two women and that was all that was needed. Jeanie loved her dad and this woman who had come into his life loved him also. That did not make the love that he had for her mother any less.

Leslie excused herself to go to the bathroom, Jeanie was sure she had a few more tears to let go of.

“Dad, that guy from Kentucky dropped me an email and wants to do a show. Sheriff Boland talked to him and they came to an understanding it seems,” she said.

“I think that is good, many people want to know how he feels and what they should do to fight back. I feel for him though; the weight of the world or at least a country he used to know is now on his shoulders. Did Robert say he would keep an eye on him?” he asked.

“Yeah, he has some deputies that are going to watch out for him, like it or not. Apparently he sounds like he protects his own and if you cross that he will come after you,” she said. “Do you know what time Gael went out to....” She trailed off after Leslie walked back from the hallway.

Her father smiled. “Leslie is well aware of your last night escapades. She was also a loyal listener to your show.”

The two women looked at each other and smiled. “ I am sorry about Gerry.” Leslie said.

“Thank you. I was asking about Gael. Do you know what time he left?” she finished.

“Not to worry, he has been gone about an hour. He said he would check in by 3, so he has some time. He does not go off half cocked without a plan.” Her dad replied with a slight scowl punctuating the he.

Leslie spoke up and offered to serve some of the chicken and dumplings she had brought. Even though she had eaten only a few minutes before Jeanie accepted and downed a bowl. The three ate mostly in silence as her dad had turned on the television. The top story of the veteran from Tyler Texas being shot by ATF agents was once again crossing the screen. Jeanie listened intently as this was the first she had heard of the shooting while fully awake. Her dad and Leslie watched for new updates, but it was the same for the last several hours. The government was going to let the agents stay in jail for right now. Her father's phone rang.

Gael was talking in a hurried voice and louder then normal. “Hey old man, I have friends. Can you meet me at that warehouse area near the back of your property?”

“I was just telling someone how you do not go off half cocked. How many friends and do we need company?”

“No, we can handle it, but I knew the lecture I would get if I tried it by myself and got shot,” the young man said.

“Yeah, yeah, meet me around the larger building with the pit next to it. We will have a reception planned,” he said.

“Will do.” The line went dead and her father cursed quietly under his breath. “ These kids are going to get me shot after all this time and never getting a scratch.”

About an hour before the call Gael had been watching the vehicle that he needed to have towed and disposed of. Something, however, seemed out of place. He had sat in his car a block away and watched as a man he did not know kept looking out the front door of the little store. His friend could have hired a new person, but when he called the people to tow the car they were unaware of any new people at the store. So he waited and waited, then was rewarded. A tall man walked into the shop and began speaking with the person inside as they stood in the doorway. This could be all innocent, but he now needed some way to make sure his friend was alright and how to get the suspect vehicle out of here.

He had formed a plan when his hand was forced. As he was watching ,so must other people had been watching him. A car pulled in front of the little market with three men in it. The tall man at the door walked down and got into the car. He was amazed at how careless they were, not trying to hide now. Why would they do that? As realization hit, the passenger window shattered and he looked and saw a man on the passenger side and a man coming up on the driver's side. He was definitely going to hear about this . He got caught flat-footed. He hoped he would be able to live it down.

An arm was reaching through the passenger window trying to open the door. In once swift movement Gael grabbed the boot knife he wore and stabbed it through the wrist and into the door itself. The puncture elicited a powerful scream. The man walking up beside the car on the driver's side stopped in his tracks as his partner flailed against the passenger door, screaming at the top of his lungs.

Gael took the momentary break to look over and make sure a gun was not coming through the window. The attacker was much too busy trying to pull the knife from his arm to worry about whatever plan they had to take him. The jagged back edge of the knife was making pulling it out nearly impossible and he was sure it was terribly painful. The man on the passenger side started to walk forward; he had begun to reach for what looked like a Glock in a side holster. Gael reached between the seats and produced a small revolver. Although he had used all sorts of government-issued guns of every type and lethality, he had to say this little American gun was a favorite. The stainless steel Taurus Judge Public defender was a great deal of fun to shoot and he loaded some '00 buck shot shells for just such an occasion.

Gael opened and leaned out the car door just enough to aim the gun and fired two shots knocking the attacker back. It might not have killed him, but it certainly would hurt. He knew the third bullet loaded was a 45 colt rnfp and he shot it at the man sprawled out just feet away. Gael did not consider himself an evil person, but they may have hurt his friend from the store and certainly tried to kill the woman he loved last night. The man was laying flat on the ground moaning from being shot, but beginning to right himself and attempting to get off the ground. Gael took aim and shot the attacker in his right kneecap. The scream was horrific.

“You had better remember an old Jewish proverb, if you mess with the tiger's tail, do not be surprised when you get the teeth and claws.” He shouted over the screaming man. He could see the car in front of the store with the four men start to move, so he quickly leaned over and grabbed the knife, jerking it downwards towards the man's hand cutting down two inches and quickly pulled it away from the door. The hand disappeared from the window, but he could still hear the screaming of the two men as he pulled away from the curb. He did not exactly speed away, but moved at a fast pace as he passed by the car. The men looked at him and then from the backseat a pistol appeared. He floored it, the bullets striking the rear glass and back door.

He was pulling on the highway as he felt the trickle of blood. He looked into the rear view and saw that either the bullet grazed him or the glass, but he had blood coming from his shoulder and a trickle from his neck. This was just getting better now, he was bleeding and got caught; he was never going to hear the end of this. He called his friends with the chop shop and told them to go pick up the car and make sure their friend was alright. Before he hung up, “Take help, the car is very heavy.” They now knew that someone could still be watching the car could be, and that bodies might be involved. But that was hardly a concern as ten men loaded into a van and a tow truck to remove the evidence. He next called his mentor, fully aware of the dressdown he was going to get.

“I am going to meet Gael and help him out please..” her father started.

“Not happening,” his daughter said as she followed him out the door.

From somewhere Leslie was in front of the two. “I will drive my truck it is in the back anyway,” Leslie said. Her father was climbing into a large Suburban and Jeanie hopped into the back seat.

“Stop by my house real quick. I need to get something for Gael.” Jeanie said.

Leslie looked back and said, “is it anything like what is in that gun case in the back?” with a huge smile.

Jeanie leaned over the back seat and flipped the latch to open the metal container. She had a quizzical look on her face. In the box was a shiny stainless steel version of the gun Gael had used last night, but it was not alone. With it was ten loaded magazines and, if she pegged it correctly, a night vision scope. Along with all that were 20 boxes of different brand 22 ammo. She sat back down and did not say a word. She knew her father would not date someone who did not have his same likes, but he had said nothing when she said she would drive. Now she had a weapon that Jeanie herself would like to own. She was not sure what to think about this new lady in her dad's life, but she had a lot more questions than answers at this time.

They took a left out of the gate and went the six miles to the closed down warehouse units. Leslie turned in and drove back the gravel road, then to the blacktop for the units themselves. She was moving on the road like this was not someplace she was unfamiliar with. She pulled behind a large building and around a large pile of rocks and rubble. The pile was easily twice as tall as the Suburban. They pulled in and shut down the vehicle. Her father and Leslie were out of the truck before she had her seat-belt off. The back was opened and she walked back and saw Leslie sliding back the gun case and flipping the top open.

“Do you want to do the honors or shall I?” Leslie said with a hint of sarcasm.

Her father looked towards Leslie and then back to Jeanie. “Jeanie, see that large flat point about halfway up the mound?" he pointed. It is stable. Take this and cover us. Shoot to disarm please. I am not sure how many bodies we can have before someone comes asking,” he said, handing her the rifle and three magazines with a smile.

“Where exactly are you two going?” Jeanie said with a hint of exasperation. Why was her dad taking this woman to watch his back and the back of Gael? Almost in unison, the two said "to help Gael". She was not amused, but before she could question this, they had donned masks like Gael had worn the night before and were gone around the mound. They moved towards the wreck of a building standing with almost no roof left and took positions on opposite side of the entrance behind two large pillars. They waited. It was not too long before she saw dust on the horizon and she knew they were coming. Gael's car was substantially ahead of the pursuer and pulled in the building and past the two pillars. He exited his car and disappeared from view.

Jeannie looked through the scope attached to the rifle and could not see any of her three friends. The car pulled in behind Gael's and in between the two pillars. She could already see in her mind what was about to transpire. The four men exited the car and began to reach for their guns. A futile decision. Gael appeared and kicked the front driver's door into the first attacker and broke his sternum.

Jeanie had taken aim at the passenger in the back seat on the passenger side. He was standing just outside the door when Leslie appeared. Jeanie was worried.. did she not know that he was armed? Jeanie tried to find a good target away from Leslie, but none were there. She peered through the scope and could see Jeanie grabbed the man's gun hand and pulled it away from him and twisted. The man bent forward as she applied pressure to his shoulder and with her right hand she slammed the door on his head. Jeanie winced as she saw the blow. Leslie had turned and was behind the third attacker. Jeanie saw her grab the right hand and spin him towards her. They ended face to face as she controlled the gun hand. This was a big man and Jeanie thought that maybe Leslie had bitten off more than she could handle. The swift chop to the throat and a direct punch to the solar plexus doubled the man over. Then with what looked to be a practiced soccer strike, she kicked him in the groin. He was down. Jeanie had forgotten about her father and when she spotted the scope over the fourth attacker, he was already down. From her vantage, it looked like his arm was not pointing in the correct direction.

Jeannie saw her father motion to Gael and Leslie; Gael moved to his car and turned over the can of gasoline he had bought to burn the car anyway. He doused the car and lit a road flare and tossed it inside the front seat. He turned to the attacker's car, opened the hood and pulled the plug wires tossing them into his burning car. Gael then joined Leslie in heading back to her Suburban. Jeanie turned the scope back to her father who was now standing over the victim he had disarmed. She could see he was talking to the man, then he placed his foot on the man's shoulder. She could hear the scream from her vantage and her father quickly turned and moved away to the Suburban.

Jeanie climbed down just as Gael and Leslie were passing her vantage point. She clambered down to Gael side and notice the blood from his neck.
“You're hurt," she said.

“Nothing to worry about, some nicks on the neck and maybe some sharp-metal in the shoulder,” he answered.

They spilled into the dark SUV, heading back out the way they had entered and drove back to her father property in silence. Once there, Leslie took a look at the wound in Gael's shoulder and extracted a small piece of metal from the muscle. Jeanie sat back and watched the procedure, as her father called and verified that the other vehicle had been picked up and disposed of. They had been able to retrieve that car even as the police were looking into the shooting victims on the ground a block away. Now the car was scrap. Her father thanked them and hung up the phone. Jeanie must have looked a little shocked at the whole situation as her father came and sat beside her.

“I am sorry, darling. I did not get to tell you before this all happened that Leslie was a trainer for the Royal Air Force in hand to hand combat,” her father said.

Jeanie was stunned, “so that is why no fuss when she said she would drive. What did you tell that last attacker?”

Her father paused before giving his answer, “I explained that life could be very short, if they stay in this area.”

She remembered he punctuated it with the step on the shoulder.

Special-Agent-in-charge Robert Solince had been an FBI agent for 15 years and had never had a situation like he had just come back from. A Sheriff and his deputies had threatened his local team and the ATF. Now it was not so much a specific threat, as much as it was to let them know that if anything went down, they would be on the side of the people. He knew the sheriff and had worked with him on a couple of cases. Although he was not the local Jefferson County Sheriff, he was for one of the immediate surrounding counties. The local Sheriff kept a low profile but something that Boland had said stuck. "You may work for the feds, but you live here and we will come to you." He sat behind his desk and yelled for his Senior Agent Travis Burke.

“Agent Burke, do we have any idea where Agent Smith is?”

“No sir. Would you like me to contact him?” Burke replied.

“No, I will,” Agent Solince replied. He hit the intercom button and called the cell number of Agent Tim Smith. Smith answered on the second ring.

Agent Smith flipped his phone open, “Yes sir.”

“I was concerned Agent Smith. You were not at the meeting, is anything wrong?” Solince asked.

“No sir I am sorry but Agent Dawes needed me to look something up for him. I was not to far from home so I went and logged in and got him the case information he needed. My apologies sir I should have cleared it with you.” Agent Smith said.

“No need to apologize, I understand. I do, however, need to talk with you when you get back to the office. We had a very odd meeting with the local Sheriff and I need to make sure everyone hears this from me and we keep a close eye on things.” Solince explained.

Chapter 33 pt 2

“Sir, I am on my way I will be there in about 20 minutes,” Agent Smith said before closing the phone.

The phone call ended and Agent Solince sat back in his chair. He knew that Agent Eliz had some serious issues with the way Smith had worked with him on the Tanner case, but he knew Silas was looking to catch the Tanner guy on anything. Agent Eliz had went so far as to file a formal complaint and if … well if he had not been killed, Agent Smith may have been dismissed. It was possible he still might be solely on the complaint. Agent Solince knew the agency was different these days - it was more political sometimes than law enforcement responsibilities it was tasked with doing. It was hard sometimes to see who they were trying to protect.

He witnessed this with Agent Eliz and the shooting locally at the mall. They wanted to convict him of something, anything, and that is what Agent Eliz was sent to do. The people at the top were protecting their relationship with the IDG and whatever left-wing groups funded the compounds around the nation. Reports had been written, then recalled and written again. After 9/11 the President wanted to let the Muslim world know this was not a war on Islam, but on fanatics. More reports were written and concluded that there was significant influence within parts of the American Islamic community by radicals who wished nothing more then Jihad with the west. That, however, was not politically correct and would have inflamed already high tensions. More reports were buried. He was too close to the end of his tenure with the agency to start to buck the system now. He could retire in two years with 95 percent pension and, if the heart problem became a problem, he could get 100 percent with disability. He rubbed his hand over his head feeling the stubble. He had promised that when the bald spot got too big he was going to go bald. He had been that way for the last few years and had become somewhat of a inside joke around the office.

Agent Burke tapped on the door. “Hey boss, checking to see if that forest needs to be clear cut again,” he said with a broad smile.

“Yeah have to watch so it does not get too long and shaggy,” Solince said.

“Did you find Agent Smith?” Burke asked.

Agent Solince nodded.

Agent Burke looked around and tried to decide if he wanted to say something. Agent Solince had worked with Travis Burke for five years and knew when something was on his mind. Something was on his mind. He would guess it had to do with Agent Smith. He knew Burke was a true believer of the FBI doctrine; if the FBI went after someone, they were guilty until proven beyond a doubt to be innocent. Then they were still probably guilty of something. He believed that there were two classes of people, those in law enforcement and those outside, and he was not a fan of Agent Smith. Burke thought Agent Smith was too close to the people side and believed they should be given their rights to the full extent of the protections afforded to them.

“Travis, you have something on your mind. What's up?” Agent Solince asked.

Agent Burke closed the door a bit. “Boss, Agent Smith is not a team player. He should have been fired when he had that run in with Eliz. If I had been with Agent Eliz, we would not have left without something instead of looking foolish.”

“Yeah, Travis, and maybe a camera or microphone picks something up and that is how investigations get started. I know you place people into law enforcement and everyone else, but that thinking can get you in trouble and investigated. Those things can take on a life of their own. Browbeating a man hours after surgery after he stopped the terrorist attack in his hometown is how to get things to go from bad to worse.” Solince said.

“I know … I know, you think we have to use kid gloves on these militia people. Boss, you know they are dangerous and we cannot let them have a foothold. That second amendment is a problem. We have to make sure that only the people trained to own guns own them,” Burke said.

“You mean government trained and law enforcement, Travis, and that is just not going to happen. I know you have had a thing for gun owners since your brother was killed by an accidental discharge at a gun range. As tragic as that was, it was an accident. The gun was recalled later for a bad safety design. This fight for a gun-free America is a battle that we cannot win and maybe we should not win,” Solince responded.

“I know we see things differently, boss, but Agent Smith is not on our side. We just need to keep an eye on him,” Burke said with more than a little exasperation in his voice.

“I am always watching for problems, Travis.” Solince said as he nodded towards Agent Burke.

Agent Burke opened the door and nodded back. walking away towards his desk. His boss pick up the phone. Agent Solince called the DC field office and asked for Agent Dawes. He had met Dawes a couple of times and liked the young man. He did not know much about him, but had been told he was connected well to money and power, but the young man was a wild card. He called his bosses on things he felt strongly about. The phone rang and rang several more times and Agent Solince was about to give up.

Agent Dawes watched the phone ring on his desk again and then again. You could never underestimate the usefulness of waiting. “ This is Agent Dawes.”

“Ah, Agent, I was about to give up and call back later.” Agent Solince said.

“I am sorry, Agent. I have been working on some background information on the shooting at the Mall of America. You know how it is, we love reports at the FBI.” Agent Dawes cracked.

Agent Solince laughed. It did seem at times that they wrote reports on reports that had to have a report to tell you what it said. “Yes, agent, I have had that pastime myself,” he laughed.

“Agent Dawes...”

“Agent Solince, I have to apologize for taking Tim away from the meeting today. I hope it was nothing that he cannot help with later. I just needed some information that I was sure he could find for me and, well, I took the short cut and did not call you first. I am sorry if that caused a problem.” Agent Dawes said in a low slow tone.

Agent Solince appreciated the response from Agent Dawes. “Please do not worry about it. The meeting was nothing that I cannot fill him in on later. I know you two are good friends from the academy and he is a top computer guy. I am glad he could help.”

“Thank you, Agent Solince. Please excuse me, but I have to speak with another agent before they leave.” Agent Dawes said.

“Yes, I understand, and please if Tim... Agent Smith can be of help, please let him know. I will give him as much time as I can.” Agent Solince replied.

They hung up and Agent Solince was convinced that Agent Smith was in fact doing something for Agent Dawes. It was not beyond question that Agent Dawes might cover for him, but it sounded like he needed help and his friend helped him. A tap at the door brought him out of his contemplation.

“Special Agent, you wanted to see me when I arrived,” Agent Smith said as he opened the door slightly.

“Yes, Agent Smith, I just need a minute to bring you up to speed.” He waved the young agent to take a seat. “I talked with Agent Dawes and he thanked me for letting you help him.”

Agent Smith nodded.

”Listen Tim we had a meeting with some local law enforcement today. After the thing in Tyler Texas, well, they let us know that any crap like that would not be tolerated here and that if we went out on any raids like that, we might find more guns then we expect.”

Agent Smith sat back with the best look of shock he could muster. “I know you have had some issues with how things are going in the agency right now and the politicization of the agency. We just need to be careful now and be on the same page.”

Agent Tim Smith sat forward in the chair. “I will be as careful as I can be, sir. As far as a team player, Sir, I take my oath seriously to defend the constitution, all of it, sir. I will do that to the end of my days with this agency, Sir.”

Agent Solince took the words to heart and in his best fatherly tone said in a low whisper. “ Agent, I understand, but son the people running things have a lot of power and clout and could finish your career anywhere you might want to go. Just be sure of the path you take and make sure you watch your back.”

Agent Smith stood up and extended his hand. “Thank you for your concern, sir. I chose a path when I took an oath that I knew some in this government did not believe in. I will follow it to the end that it takes me and I will always be on the side of the people.” Agent Smith leaned closer. “You have always treated me fairly and I can say now that I would never do anything that would endanger another agent, as long as that agent was not endangering an innocent civilian.”

The exchange was over. Agent Smith left the office and went to his desk. He wondered if he had said too much, but now it was too late. He needed to give Agent Dawes a call later and he very much wanted to head out to Jerome Tanner's place to thank him.

1100 miles away in Taos County NM, Ramos Diaz showed up for work at the adult correction facility. He had gotten word from his contact in Mexico that several drug cartel members were being held there while they awaited transfer to other correctional facilities around the state. The correction department felt it would be better to try and do this as low profile as possible. This was a smaller facility and they hoped to keep it all quiet. It was not out of the realm of possibility that the cartels might try something to get some of their men out.

Diaz walked through the secure door showing his identification badge. The guard buzzed him in and he walked back to the custodian services to begin his rounds. He had been hired a few months ago with the fake identification supplied by a man that looked like he was Mexican military. The man told him to try and get a job with this specific jail. He had been supplied with his just as the twelve other men in the room had been supplied with theirs. When they arrived at the drop house they fanned out towards their destinations. He had been given ten thousand dollars to get an apartment and car. They were assured if they started to party and get in trouble they would be removed. A shriveled skeleton-like hand in a jar convinced Diaz this was a job and to take it seriously.

There would be 10 to 15 guards tonight and Diaz had made it his business to know their patterns. Like most other jails this one had small areas inside of the ja, so if inmates did get to one area they could not get outside. Diaz made his rounds and at each station stopped by the coffee pot and dropped the white powder he had been supplied with. Quickly officers began to get severely ill. His last stop was the entrance area and the two guards that watched the main area. One of the officers was getting a cup as Diaz visited the coffee pot and took a small cup. As the officer took a cup and began to drink, he chatted with Diaz about sports and the local soccer league until the officer started looking very red in the face and sick. He began chocking and drooling as he grasped for his throat and went down to his knees. The other officer went over to his downed college and started to reach for his microphone to call for help.

Ramos Diaz stood behind the officer and pulled a stun gun from the cart, placing it against the neck of the officer before he could call for help. Diaz took the keys and walked back through the door and into the jail. He picked up the phone before walking out of the office area to be sure his accomplice had done what he needed to cut off the phone system. He walked back toward the cells, then cut off towards the armory. He found the key and opened the locker, pulling out four pistols and magazines. He opened the gate to the main area and yelled at one of the inmates who he pitched the keys to. The inmate opened his cell and then began to open the other cells. A guard stumbled down the hallway and attempted to draw his gun. Diaz saw the officer and shot him in the chest. Then he pitched a gun to one of the now freed inmates. Another officer was shot from the other side of the jail area. Then the inmates started to move out the front and into the parking lot where a van waited. The 15 inmates escaped into the night and before the night was over, two deputies were dead from gunshot wounds and seven others from poisoning. The rest had not ingested enough to kill them, but for some it would be months before they could return to work. It was the worst daytime escape in the state's history.

Chapter 34

Chapter 34

The small diner in Tulsa Oklahoma off Highway 244 was popular with the truckers and locals alike. It served a famous meatloaf for the area and was full as usual with the evening dinner rush hour. No one gave much notice to the small Toyota SUV parked in the lot for the last 30 minutes with two men sitting in the front seat. It was not unusual for families to be waiting to meet up for the meal. The diners were unaware that shortly their lives would be changed forever.

The two men stared intently as the diner filled to capacity. They wanted the maximum number of targets to be right in the open. The large front plate glass windows customary in these small diners allowed a excellent view, but the men waited and then they saw what they wanted. Two police cruisers pulled into the lot and parked, then four deputies walked into the the small eatery. The contacts within the drug cartel had asked a heavy price for two new glock 18 with eight 33 rounds magazines, but the 50000 a piece price would be worth it. They had practiced with the weapons and could control them and would not lose their targets. Even if they died here today the price would be worth the cost.

The infidels had felt the fear when they went about their daily lives, now even as they went about their most mundane task of going out to eat they would feel the fear. The country was dying a well deserved and long overdue death and, Allah willing, this would be another nail in the coffin of this accursed nation. The two men exited the car and walked towards the door. Reaching inside the fake pocket slit that they had practiced so many times, they withdrew the weapons and began to fire. The nine millimeter rounds shattered the glass easily as the bullets poured into the diner. The 33 round magazines were emptied in seconds, then replaced and replaced again. As the terrorists saw people move they directed their aim towards the moving targets. When the third magazines emptied at nearly the same time the two men moved forward and engaged the forth magazines and stepped into what used to be a family diner. They switched the pistols to semi-auto and walked around the room shooting anyone left moving. When the last bullet was fired they moved back to the Rav 4 and drove away they had other targets to hit this day.

JT sat down to supper with all the family around chatting about how the goats were doing and trying the first of the goat's milk. They had went ahead and pasteurized it in the microwave for now; once they felt they had a handle on watching the goats for any diseases they would forgo that process. They had drunk natural cow's milk from the farmer next door and loved the rich taste. Although he drank his warm, he would normally chill it when they were coming over to help him with something. They tried the goats milk and of course the kids had to have some comment about the taste, but not much was said as everyone enjoyed a meal together. As they sat and ate a knock on the back door had them turning towards the back hallway. JT got up and walked towards the back door, his hand back on the security six. He flipped on the back porch light and looked out to see Agent Smith standing on the back stoop. It seemed Chaos had decided he must be all right since the dog lay sleeping next to the doghouse not five feet away.

“Agent Smith … come on in.” JT waved him in and closed the door behind his unexpected guest. The two men walked back up the hall and into the kitchen. As JT walked into the kitchen he offered the agent a seat. “Please sit down agent.”

“ I am sorry. I did not mean to interrupt your dinner.” Agent Smith said.

“Nonsense, it is nice to see you again. This is my wife Anne and Dan and Nora our kids.” JT made the introductions.

“It is nice to meet you all,” Agent Smith said as he dropped down into an empty seat around the table.

The kids were somewhat shocked by the FBI agent sitting at the table and being there with the seeming welcome of their father.

“Agent, please take a plate. It is nothing special, but beef stew over rice,” Anne said. As she did she grabbed a plate from the cabinet and put a spoonful of beef stew over a bed of rice. Sitting the plate in front of the agent, “ thank you for helping my husband, Agent Smith.”

“It is Tim, ma'am, Tim Smith and maybe it is I who need to be thanking your husband. All I did was get him another revolver. It seems he has offered me a great deal more.” Agent Smith said as he looked up from the plate, “ I hope that I have not said too much, but from the meeting today I felt an inperson thank you was very much the least I could do.”

The people around the table ate surrounded in an uncomfortable silence. The kids passing looks between themselves and Anne wondering what her husband had done that the agent would take such a chance as to come here and thank her husband.

“ When I was injured in the hospital you made sure that Eliz remembered there could be people watching. You did get me another security six and you and Agent Hawes risked your careers and possibly more communicating with me. I simply made it known that if you were concerned about your safety by anything happening and my feelings were a concern to those people, I would take it as a personal insult and would feel betrayed.” JT said looking up and into the eyes of the young man. “I simply told them the truth.” JT continued to eat looking back down at his plate as his wife and kids sat in stunned silence. Everyone finished their plates. Agent Smith even tried some of the goat's milk and found it surprisingly good.

“Ma'am thank you! That was the first home cooked meal in some time,” Agent Smith said.

“You are more than welcome, kids grab the dishes,” she said, nodding her head towards the table. The kids cleared the table of all the dishes quickly.

JT got up and motioned Agent Smith into the living room. “Can I grab you a shot of bourbon, if you have time to sit a bit.”

“Sure!” Smith said.

JT walked over and opened a bottle of Woodford Reserve and walked out towards the kitchen and back with a couple of glasses. He offered one to Agent Smith and poured a shot in the glass, then poured one for himself setting the bottle back on the bookshelf. Agent Smith looked over at the bookshelf and saw an eclectic selection of books from science fiction to autobiographies.

“Agent Smith... the … Sheriff Boland, I am not sure if you met him or not today, he has asked me to do something more for the people who find themselves wanting to do something but not sure what. They have asked me to do a web-show or youtube or something to help people maybe work together... protect each other and try to get through this. I would like your opinion on this. I am considering doing something with the lady from Phoenix, Jeanie Reynolds,” JT said in a serious tone.

“Don't worry, Tim. I am going to keep a close eye on anything he does,” Anne said with a laugh as she walked in the room in front of the kids and took a seat across from Tim. The kids decided for today this was a time to sit in front of the fireplace on the floor and not fight over who got the other recliner. Tim and JT laughed as everyone sat down. “ I think this needs to be open to the family, darling. I am sure the kids were a bit confused when Agent Smith sat down and started having dinner with us."

“Yes that is probably true... suffice it to say this goes nowhere outside of this house.” JT said looking at the kids. “ Friends have asked me to take a more active role and attempt to tell people things that might help them, things that might help them help other people. I have talked with Jeanie Reynolds about maybe doing a show live, youtube or possibly a radio show.... who knows. I was asking Agent Smith here...Tim, what he thought about that idea.” JT said as he sipped the amber liquid.

Tim sat and thought for a minute before he said anything. “ I do not think you would bring any more scrutiny onto yourself doing it. The government is not going to come directly at you, I do not believe, even if you attacked one of the compounds like Jeanie threatened to do. They would try coming later, maybe through the legal system like they tried with you but on a federal level. As far as the terrorists... well, you and I have spoken about that and I do not believe they will stop. It is not in their interests, no matter what it takes, if you live, they lose. These are the concerns; there may be others, what if people act the wrong way, but these are the main ones. I think the benefits could be significant. If you and your girlfriend” he said with a smile looking towards Anne, “could help people get through this and help each other. Maybe if we can get these attacks stopped, it could lessen the damage that will eventually be done. I could see a lot of good things if people started locally and built out trying to help. As much as people were worried about FEMA and camps.. FEMA is overwhelmed. They have had the attacks at some of the camps and equipment stolen. Some places in the inner cities where they were trying to help patients who needed to be able to have electricity to run dialysis and medical equipment, they have been attacked by gangs stealing and killing people for no reason. Saying this area is under their control.” Tim took a drink and sat back.

“Dad, this is something that you need to do, try and help whoever will listen. If no one does or they choose not to, then you tried and that is all that can be asked. You and this lady have a...following... for lack of a better word. Maybe some will listen.” Nora said in contrast to her normally quiet nature.

As it seemed Anne was going to speak, the cell phone on Agents Smith's belt rang. He flipped it open and looked, he had a message. The color drained from his face. “JT, can we turn the television on to a news channel? Something has happened.”

Nora got up and handed the remote to her father who turned it onto the fox news. They were on a live shot from someplace. It looked like there had been some kind of explosion. The newscaster was saying something and then they went live on location.

Fox News Reporter

“We are back live, just outside Tulsa Oklahoma. This used to be a family diner with people coming in for lunch and dinner, but tonight it is the scene of unbelievable carnage. Early reports state that two men who were wearing long dark coats got out of a small SUV maybe a Honda or Toyota and opened fire with automatic weapons. One man who is in critical condition, but was alive when the first officers arrived, said they used small automatic pistols and then walked through the diner and shot people who were still alive.”

As a Sheriff walked by.

“Sheriff, Sheriff, one question. Did these men actually use sub machine-guns of some sort?” The reporter asked as he guided the Sheriff next to him and in front of the camera.

The Sheriff seemed upset but looked down and then back into the camera. “ At this time it seems that one of the men who was in the kitchen behind the block wall of the kitchen said he believes they were using glock 18 machine pistols. I am not sure if he knows what he is talking about, but it does seem he has some knowledge of guns. That is all I will say for now.”

This attack took place a hour ago just as the diner was filling for dinner rush. This seems to be a new tactic from these terrorists and we will keep you informed with any new breaking news.

The scene moved back to the newsroom and JT muted the show.

JT looked over to Agent Smith. “Glock 18's, I would think those are pretty hard to come by.”

“Yeah, without some law enforcement or military attachment they should be near impossible, but with what we have seen these probably came through Mexico and their military,” said the agent.

“This is what bothers me about this whole thing. I know the Islamic terrorists are trying to collapse the economy and thus try and realign the country, but what about this issue with the Mexican gangs and possibly government. This would seem to be contrary to their preservation. There is no way they will flourish with drug crime in some world caliphate. “ JT mused sipping from the glass.

“I hate to say, but this seems more like a move by Mexico itself. They would have made out handsomely with the North American union, but now that is gone. They are still for the most part a failed state. The drug cartels control much of the government. Now maybe they have decided to work together and break off a part of the country they feel they have always owned. It is a stretch, but it explains why they would be helping. ,The shooting match on the border that Texas finds itself in could be simply the beginning of Mexico seeing if they can make a front on American soil and have miles of land in the middle and take control of it. They could be working with the terrorists simply for expediency,” Agent Smith added.

The five sat in silence for some time; a calm and comfortable time that belayed the worry that JT and Agent Smith felt about this new tactic. The two sat and watched the news with no sound, watching the anchors go about their silent discussions.

“I think I will work with Jeanie and do some kind of show. We will try and get people working locally and together for protection and support. We have to try and get them to help and head off as many of the problems that are going to occur as we can. If we can help keep the basics going maybe we can do some good.” JT said to the whole group. It was not said so much as some statement but more like a resolution to a problem that had been working on his mind. It seemed that in that moment he had made the decision that he would do something if he could. He still had some concerns but he would accept that his motives were pure. This was not vengeance or hatred but love of this country and what it stood for. JT downed the remaining bourbon and added another shot. He looked over towards Agent Smith and walked over and touched glasses. Anne looked at the two with a worried look. She knew that this was taking a new turn and could be dangerous. Her husband had been through so much and now he was going to become more outspoken. She worried this would make him more of a target but form what Agent Smith said the people that wanted him dead would not stop now or later.

“Tim do you really think that could be what is going on with the border issue, could Mexico really think if America has a bad collapse they might take back part of the country?” JT asked sitting back into his recliner suddenly feeling very tired.

“Honestly, yeah we have had reports for quit a while of the cartels getting more power and infiltrating the whole of the government; many in the cartels believe in the whole recongista movement.” Agent Smith said.

“Is there anyway we can get that information to people down there and let them know what to look for? If they know what the cartels are trying or at least what we think they are going to try maybe that will give them a heads up and a chance to stop it.” JT wondered out loud.

“It is possible, that Texas Ranger... Crockett if we could get something to him and let him know what we think that might be enough to help.” Agent Smith said.

JT stood and walked towards to door nodding for Agent Smith to follow. “kids go check the goats and Dan we need to check on some kind of motion senors for the yard, something that we can wire up. If I am going to become more active that might push them to try again sooner. “Hon I want you to start wearing the Taurus around the house.” leaning down kissing his wife. Not a request but more of a statement of what needs to start happening. She nodded her head.

Agent Smith and JT walked out the doorway and down the steps to his man cave smiling as he thought of the way his wife referred to his computer and reloading room. He sat down and motioned Agent Smith to the seat next to him and then nudged the mouse and the screen came alive. He opened his email and typed a quick note to the address he had for Jeanie Reynolds and turned to the federal agent. “ you know you took a chance coming here, if anyone starts worrying about where you allegiance is you could be in danger.”

“yeah unfortunately I may have said to much about that today in front of my boss but I am not sure I will stay with this for much longer. I have my PhD and have been thinking of moving on.” Agent Smith explained.

“Your bosses could make it rough where ever you wanted to go. You need to be careful.” JT cautioned.

“You are right but frankly I did appreciate the good word and the protection.”Agent Smith said.

A sound from the computer let them know that an email had arrived and it was from Jeanie. He replied and asked if she felt comfortable in calling and gave her his cell number. A ring on his cell phone a short time later gave him the answer.

“Hello Jeanie it is nice to finally talk with you. I am sitting here with a friend of mine Agent Tim Smith from the FBI.” JT said. He had already known that she would be concerned and might hang up but this was not the time for them to have secrets and he hoped that Tim agreed.

“Hello JT and Agent Smith I must say you have some interesting friends JT.” Jeanie Said.

JT paused before going on he wanted this to go correctly. “Jeanie I vouched for Agent Smith with the local... with Sheriff Boland and I am going to ask that you trust that I feel Agent Smith has shown that he has put his career and more on the line for me. I hope you feel you can speak freely.”

There was silence and JT worried that he had assumed to much and had put the whole issue of trying to help people in jeopardy by this call. He could here sounds in the background as the speaker captured movements.
“JT I am sorry we have not been back long there was an issue that had to be taken are of. If your Agent friend has helped and protected you then I will accept that.” JT was still worried but would try and smooth it over later. “what did you need with the call.” She asked.

“Jeanie, I will do some show with you I have decided but something else came as we were watching the news about the diner shooting.” he started to continue.

“what shooting...” Jeanie asked.

“some diner in Tulsa, it looks like the shooters used some automatic machine pistols glock 18 maybe. Agent Smith and I were talking and think it is possible those came from Mexican military and with that he shared with me a report about the cartels and how they feel about reconquista.” JT said back. “turn on any news channel.”

Agent Smith and JT could here people in the background and the news come on. They were still talking about how many people and still more speculation.

Jeanie spoke again to JT “ My dad seems to think that is a good possibility, he said that glock would not do it directly but that they would allow stuff to be smuggled to Mexico and the cartels. So that Agent is pretty good.”

“well here is the part we need some help with. I want to get that information to the Texas Ranger Crockett with some consideration that maybe they are trying to carve out a line behind the border in America and then cut that area off, maybe they are working with the terrorists maybe just taking advantage of the chaos. If the Ranger knows that the cartels think this way it could allow them to keep a weary eye on any thing that looks like they are trying to arm some type of guerrilla force. I know it sounds crazy and that is why we need some introduction.” JT explained.

“not to bad...yeah sounds crazy but if they think that America is too distracted it is possible they might try it. I would bet they would try and make the area to dangerous for white Americans so it just becomes north Mexico by attrition.” She said. “I am going to watch this news and get cleaned up, dad says he has a friend that knows most of the rangers. I will get back with you about this and the show. Agent Smith welcome to the resistance.” She said with that high laugh. “ I will get back to you as quick as I can. By for now” and she was gone.

JT looked at the Agent. “ that seemed to go well, I hope you do not mind but I did nt feel I should keep it a secret that you were here.”

“No I think the tact you took was the best one. I guess in for a penny in for a pound.” Agent smith laughed. He downed the rest of the bourbon and thanked his host. “I need to get home, Hawes is expecting a call and I want to check up and see what else is going on with the shooting. I will keep you updated.”

“Ok be careful” JT quickly wrote down the email that he and Jeanie were using and handed it to the agent. “I use pgp encryption. I will let you know when I hear back from Jeanie.”

Agent Smith walked up the stairs and said his goodbys as he passed by Anne who was now sporting her Taurus judge. He walked out the back and towards his car. Nora and he brother were walking back towards the house and past him. Dan was well ahead and said nothing but Nora made eye contact, those deep green eyes. “goodnight agent, I hope we meet again.” Tim stood and watched the young woman walk into the house catching her glance back once. He climbed in the car and drove down the gravel driveway. I will have to say something to him they need to get some lights out here so if someone is coming they can see. As he pulled onto 44 and then down towards Dixie highway he did not notice a dark sedan pull out of a side road and follow along behind his car.

Chapter 35

Chapter 35

"As of now this is it for chapt 35 I may add more and if I do I will post and let you guys know."

Mr President; the Attorney General and the Director of The FBI are on the line as you requested.

“Thank you” Replied the President to the intern who had sat up the call. He could not remember her name but she seemed a good worker sometimes she seemed better then people who were getting paid. He took a deep breath. He had assured himself that he would not loose his temper and would keep this short and sweet.

“Gentlemen I want to thank you for your time.” both men replied their assurance it was there pleasure.” I have to be frank with you two, I was under the impression that this issue of the gun registration was settled when I decided that we were no longer going to continue this Presidential order. I felt that I had made myself clear that now was not the time and that we needed to concentrate on larger issues like the possibility that people we have called friends are attacking us. Now I have a situation that an American War Hero WWII vet was attacked in his home and shot in the back in the middle of the night. These were never setup to be done in such a way and now I have 6 members of the ATF that have been arrested and are going to be put on trial.”

“completely against the law Mr President” interrupted the Attorney General.

“whether against the law or not it is happening and they are not taking calls or orders from any federal court. The federal judge that you called into this without my request has been told his security cannot be guaranteed. He and his family have left the state. So unless you plan to start a war with Texas what do you plan? This is where you and the director have not thought this through. If the people loose faith and the states not longer support us and will not follow federal edicts what do we do. They have called a bluff that I am not willing to push at this time.”

“Sir are you telling me that the agents will do on trial? I cannot believe that you will allow this rogue state to do this.” The Attorney General said with some exasperation in his voice.

“I am going to try and go about some form of diplomatic poker and I am sure I am gong to have to give them something and that might be an agent to put on trial.”

“That is outrageous this government cannot be held hostage by some rednecks from Texas, Mr. President.” The Attorney General said with more condescension evident in his response.

“Mr. Attorney General we are responsible for the whole country not just some part that you like and frankly most of the country seems to have lost their support for us because we have not kept them safe and maybe because we have not been honest about who is killing our fellow citizens. “ the president could here the Attorney General, he was sure he was gesturing towards the phone. “Frankly gentlemen we are not getting the support because we have failed the people now I am calling on you both to move on these issues with the IDG and get these cells shut down now. Nothing more will be done on this gun registration and I expect some answer soon.” There was silence again from the other end of the phone.

“Mr. President we are follow leads into the attack at a mosque in Minnesota a night ago and the attack on some men from that mosque today.” said the FBI director in a subdued voice. “We have been contacted from the IDG that they believe an Israeli agent was involved as well as the hate radio show host Jeanie Reynolds. Her father owns a large plot of land and we are going to start watching the compound. It has come to our attention that he was a ranger and worked in black ops. So we intent to go in hot and try and take them down without a fight.”

The President was beside himself. What had he just got done discussing. “Mr. Director was this mosque involved with any of these attacks, is there any information that points to that direction. As for the radio show host is this the same one who had her partnered killed by these same terrorists?”

“Well Mr. President we did not look at the mosque in that way. The IDG assured us they were the victims in this and we felt it would look bad to question them in this issue. We...”

“Director I do not work for the IDG and you do not work for the IDG though at this second it seems like you might run things by them before you do your job. I have people telling me that this mosque is very much involved with the IDG and has a large collection of guns on-site. I also am told that a man was attacked by four Muslim men and a store owner was nearly beaten to death. Do you hear any of this or are your men looking for this at all?”

“Well Sir after the unfair vilification of the Muslim community after 9/11 we try and make sure to take into account how things will look from a Muslim perspective. We do not want to push to harshly without overwhelming evidence. We have taken a hands off approach and let people within the community let us know of any possible trouble spots.” The Director said.

“So director let me get this straight you are saying that you ask the people that we should be investigating if we need to investigate them? However you are willing to take their word they were attacked and want to go against a decorated serviceman who from what I gather has the respect of the military brass and would slaughter any team you sent in. Is that what I am hearing? The President now clearly loosing his temper. “What kind of an idiot are you and while I am at it what kind of of idiots do you think the American people are.”

“Sir we want to avoid any rush to judgment and actually sir we have tried to view this from a minorities point of view and...”

“Director let me set you straight on something this is a law enforcement issue and no other group in the country is allowed to police themselves while expecting the police to understand how they feel if they did do anything wrong. Now from this moment forward there is to be no further discussions with the IDG what so ever. This mosque and others like it are to be looked into and this is not to be checked through the IDG is that perfectly clear. Also you have no evidence against this Reynolds family and no measures will be taken against them until you do. We are going to stop these attacks and get a secure footing. I have directed the Secretary of State to let Egypt know that any tariff would be immediately followed by an evaporation of the billions in aide that we send them every year. I hope to get the oil prices down and get this economy out of free fall.” The President trailed off and tried not to sound as angry as he was. It was not possible these two men did not see how this was affecting the country. People were openly questioning if the government had abdicated its responsibility in securing the public and was being overly sensitive to the Muslim population. He had actually had to go to the CIA and specific members of the FBI and ask about these problems and if the IDG was involved. He was told that reports were out there that showed they had been involved with a slow but sure radicalization of mosques in several states. They have to be able to put aside their agendas and do they jobs that they have been tasked with.

“Mr. President...I think I speak for the Director and Myself and say that we are not comfortable in pillorying a minority with unfounded charges and think we need to look more at the militia angle. We feel if we can dig deep enough we can find some connection and we are sure will find some illegal arms activity within the small arms treaty that we can do a mass round up with...”

“Mr Attorney General I do not care what you feel or what you like right now you work for me and this administration and will follow the directives I have placed. The small arms treaty has not and will never be ratified in this country and as of right now I am telling you that I am well aware of your connections with the IDG and sympathy for that group and you will get people moving to investigate them and any groups associated with them. Is that perfectly clear? This will happen today gentlemen and I mean now. I will not put up with this dissension any further.” The President said.

“Sir if you allow us just a little more time and I will contact the IDG and we can see if any members have had any...” The Attorney General started but was unable to finish.

“dammit man I have made it perfectly clear you are no longer to be in contact with that group they do not have some rubber stamp on this government. Now is that clear?”

“well Sir I am not comfortable with that and I do not think the Director is also.” The Attorney General said firmly.

“fine I am sorry but you two leave me little choice, you will submit your resignations to be by noon tomorrow. I have tried to work with you and now how you feel about minorities rights but those rights cannot trump the rights of the people to be free from terrorists. I will make an announcement tomorrow at noon that your resignations are accepted immediately and I will appoint people to run the agencies on a temporary basis.” The President angrily replied.

“Sir with all due respect I do not think we can do that. During this difficult time when you have been pressured by the hard right and with the threats of more attacks from these militias I feel the director and I must stay and support the security of this country. I believe it is well past time to ask for outside help.” The Attorney General said as he and the Director of the FBI hung up the phone.

The President sat with the phone in his hand for a full minute before he reacted and then he slammed the received down and heaved the phone against the wall. A secret service agent was in the room immediately and the President waved him away and asked that he get someone to clean his mess up. As the agent was leaving the room. “Please ask the intern... Debby to call the white house counsel and ask her to come to see me as soon as possible.” The Secret Service agent was out the door with a nod. The President sat in sat in silence as he waited in one of the conference rooms. Millie Franks was a hold over from the previous administration. She was more then a competent lawyer and he had not really had a need to have a counsel since her ran most things through the Attorney general and maybe that was a fault of some of this now he had let many people run things as they saw fit without much input.

Millie Franks tapped on the door. She had been waiting for this and accepted it was her time to go. She was only 52 and had a respectable career before she came into public service. At 5' 6” with dirty blond hair she always looked the professional part. “Mr. President I was told you wished to see me.” She said quietly as she opened the door.

“Yes Millie please come in, I need to asked you opinion on some issues.” He said.

She was slightly taken aback “Sir my opinion... I am sorry sir I assumed this was to let me know you found someone to take my place.”
“Millie I know you are a hold over and if you do not feel comfortable please let me know but if I could I would like to ask your opinion on a few issue that have come up...I...ummm also need your discretion in this for the time being.” The President explained as he offered her a seat across from his chair.

“Sir... Mr. President not at all if I can be of service please... let me know what I can do. I will offer my best advice and as always this is between an attorney and her client.” She said getting back command from the uncomfortable start. “ what can I answer for you Sir?”

“Millie, thank you. I have had a rather uncomfortable conversation with the Attorney General and the Director of the FBI. Due to a difference of opinion of this whole issue of terrorism and the attacks I have asked them both to step down and let me appoint someone on a temporary basis to handle their daily tasks while I get approval for people to replace them. Frankly they have declined to do so.” the President looked over towards her face to see if she registered any surprise and none shown. He wondered if she had that poker face at all times.” the Attorney General went so far as to say that he was going to ask for help from the UN do to the danger from the militias and the inaction by me against them.”

“Sir , I am sorry I do not want to interrupt but did you ask directly for their immediate resignations?” Millie asked.

“Yes I made it clear I wanted them to resign immediately.” The President replied. He could see that she was taking a quick note and then looked back towards him to allow for any more that he needed to tell her. “I feel that some explanation is needed, I have asked them both to look into the possibility that the IDG is involved with these attacks and to stop communicating with the IDG and their surrogates. They both seem to be hell bent on attacking guns owners no matter if they are in a militia or not and bringing us close to civil war. These militia for whatever it is worth will not give up their arms and the way we have went about this registration scheme has been a disaster that has pushed more people against what we were trying to do. They both refused to stop speaking with the IDG and I am not sure about this whole registration and the last thing we talked about was a possible attack on a ranger in Minnesota who might have been attacked by Islamic fanatics himself or not but they want to go in shooting and ask later. It is as if they want a shooting to happen and try and blame it on the American who fought back. I admit my goal was a frank and open discussion of gun ownership but this idea that we would come in the middle of the night and take guns from people was never my agenda and now the shooting of the WWII vet is just crazy.”

“Well sir I am not sure about all that but the first thing to do is tell the Speakers of the House both majority and minority you have asked for the resignation of the FBI director and the Attorney General, I would also let the senate minority and majority leaders know. I would then call a press conference even as early as tonight if the leaders can be called and let know and tell the American people that you have asked for the resignations and they have refused. I think I would tell the American people they have said they might even take this to the Secretary General of the UN.” Millie explained in a firm tone. She looked down as if there was more but she stopped short of saying anything.

The President noticed “Millie I respect you are in a awkward situation but please let me know anything that could help.”

“Sir please understand I offer you the same respect as I would any one I was giving advice to and you are the President but Sir you have to know that the two men who you are speaking of were and are radicals. I know you wanted to leave a progressive mark on the nation but you understand that the nation is really not that progressive and that changes that you want will come moderately and over years. Your Attorney General and the Director want to rewrite history. They want to remake America with a second bill of rights and a new mission to make sure everyone is taken care of the same and everyone has the same. Not everyone having the same chance they want to try and create some socialist utopia that has never worked. Sir your Attorney General did work with the IDG and even wrote a report that lauded them for their understanding and belief in a world peace initiative but he did not mention that the peace initiative was to enforce sharia and being forth a new caliphate. It was a propaganda piece nothing more or less.” She eyed the President worried that she might say to much but now she decided was not the time to hold back. “Mr. President I am sorry to say sir but these men were radicals and they still are and the problem with radicals is they are vehement in their beliefs and anyone who disagrees is an enemy. You have disagreed and went back on plans that they had you are now that enemy.”

“will this work Millie will this push them to stop?” The President asked.

“Sir these two men have walked away from the law they were sworn to respect and protect, it is hard to tell if they will respect you going on air and doing this. They may balk at it and go to the UN and see if the Secretary general will let them speak. If he does it is difficult to tell if the UN could possibly try and send troops. I do have to make this one last point Sir. As long as you are president they have some legitimacy.” She said ending in a somber tone.

“He looked down understanding her meaning.” Yes we hope it does not come to that he thought to himself. “could you please make the calls to the speakers of the house and the heads of the senate and I will make a conference call with them in half and hour to explain how this came about. I want to get this on the air tonight.”

Millie made the calls and answered as many questions as she could but was frank that most of the explanation was going to have to be by the President and he would have a conference call within the half hour so they should stay available. She did ask that the politicians should please let the President explain things before making any statement or leak. The conference call was made and it went as the President had thought it would the republicans were furious with the administration and the democrats were upset that the President would not back up some of his more progressive policies but no one backed up the Attorney General or the Director at least if they did they would not voice it on the phone. The call ended with the Republicans members calling for the President to get control or they would start impeachment proceedings of the Attorney General and the Speaker of the House let it be known that he would hold the administration responsible for any problems the FBI director started also they wanted a statement from the President that the Director was not longer in charge of the day to day operations and that agents who follow him could and would be persecuted. The President agreed that would be in his speech to the American people. The members were off the call and the President was sure leaking information through their various people. He had asked the press secretary to call for an immediate Press conference in the press briefing room.

“ Ladies and Gentleman It was necessary to come to you tonight on a urgent matter. Earlier today I asked the Attorney General and the Director of the FBI to submit their immediate resignations. I am sorry to say that they declined letting me know that they feel they US is in peril from Right Wing militias and do not feel they can resign and as a matter of protocol they were going to the Secretary General of the UN to ask that he send in peace keeping troops to American Soil to try and curtail the attacks they sat are the result of these militia. However there is significant evidence that these attacks are related to the IDG and groups associated with radical Islam. I have informed the heads of the house and senate and was told they will start impeachment proceedings against the Attorney General. I have also let the Secretary General know that the US will in no way tolerate interference in an internal matter through our ambassador to the UN they also made the UN General Secretary aware that having the Attorney General or anyone but our ambassador to speak on behalf of the US was completely out of protocol. I will also state now that the Director of the FBI is no longer in any position to direct operations and that any agents that follow his directions could and will face prosecution on any laws that they violate. I will at this time let the country know that the agents in Texas will need to stand trial. I will be asking the Governor to show leniency but there must be consequences when mistakes are made and I feel that needs to go up the ladder and if people at the top made mistake then they should also face charges. Thank you and I will not be taking questions.” The President turned and walked of the door.

“Sir that was very good I think you have covered it all” Millie said.

“I hope it pressures the two men to do what they should have done today and offer their resignations. I am not sure what else we can do. I worry they will have people who will listen to them at the UN and might try and take some action.” The President cupped his hands over his face and ran them back over his head. “ Millie this is so far out of control.”

The Attorney looked at the pained look and felt sincere sympathy. She knew that this man and she were at the ideological opposite ends of the spectrum but she did feel sympathy. He had been elected and wanted to put in some changes that would grow and make this a more progressive nation but people he put in place did not understand that nuance they wanted change now and nothing slight they wanted a complete remake. She placed a hand on the Presidents shoulder. “Sir I will help you all I can.”

Calls were made to the Secretary General and he assured the US ambassador that they would follow protocol but he had already been called by every member of the middle east coalition and assured that since the Attorney General was worried about militias that were attempting a take over the United States government then he should be given a chance to make his case. A major point was made that the US had many times asked for peace keepers when the sitting government of a country said all was well. Another point was made of a more subtle nature that if the Secretary General balked at letting the Attorney General make his case then peach keepers might find themselves in danger. An idea had been forming since the first calls were made hours ago and now at close to midnight he had finalized the plan. The Attorney General of the US would lay out his concerns the Secretary General would allow the Venezuelan ambassador wold read list of issues and the ability of the US to defeat the motion would be off the table. Someone else he was sure; one of the permanent members would vote against troops on US soil.

Chapter 36

Agent Tim Smith arrived home a little later then he had planned. He had made a couple of stops to see some old college friends nothing that would raise suspicion but people that he knew that he could trust and then a stop by the grocery and then Walmart and picked up a box of 22 ammo. He had been pretty sure that he was being followed from the beginning but he was sure as he got home that some one with a dark sedan was watching and following him. His boss could have put a tail on him or someone else but he would need to be more careful. He would drop Tanner a note on email that it looked like someone was on to him and to tell JT to be careful. He put his acquisitions away and dropped into his favorite chair and called Harold. He went over the days events and the possibility that he was being followed. Agent Dawes felt it was more likely an agent doing it on his own. He did not think the SAC would waste the time or want to get involved. There had been rumors for some time that the SAC down in Louisville was waiting for his retirement. He had stopped working the political minefield and was content to stay right where he was. Maybe he burned out or just saw one to many agents die. It happened. They would find a time they were happy with and then they would work towards that day to end there time with the agency. Agent Dawes just let his friend know that he did not thing the SAC would be the one after him. Dawes did not feel he needed to burden Tim with the rest. They spoke awhile longer and ended the call. Tim sat in front of his PC and sent and email to JT through the account he had given him. He only noted that the FBI may have been following him and left it at that. He was tired it had been along day and the Louisville office might need to back up on the shooting in Tulsa but that was tomorrow. He walked into his bedroom and pulled the covers down and turned on the television. The news droned on as he sat on the edge of the bed and looked down at the carpet. He looked up from the floor and over towards the closet. He walked over and opened the door reached in to the top self and pulled the Ruger 22/45 down from where he kept it. He handled the gun and then dropped the magazine looking to see it was loaded with the cci stinger ammo. He reached up and picked up the other empty magazine and then reached to the back of the closet and felt the 2x4 that made up the wall. His hand felt down the piece of wood and felt for the knot hole that looked very much a natural part of the wood and inserted his pinkie and pushed the small lever inside the hole. The small piece of wood popped out and into his hand, he placed the wood on a small shelf that ran across the back and reached inside the slit with two fingers and pulled the smooth round metal tube out of the closet. The Gemtec Alpine Suppressor secured onto the front of the Ruger and made a surprisingly light weight but deadly weapon. Harold had some friends get the Suppressor for him and they had worked on a place to hide it. He had shot it at his families cabin a few times but never considered he would need a backup gun like this on the job but things had changed today. He took the pistol and placed it in his bedside table and lay back on the bed staring at the ceiling as he listened to the latest update from the shooting in Tulsa. His mind drifting off to sleep as they talked of the shooting and people seeing a small black RAV 4 before the shooting sitting in the parking lot.

Sargent Isiah Lyons was heading towards the small diner on the edge of town in Mayfield Kentucky it sat tucked into the far western part of the state. Sergeant Lyons stood 6'4'' and weighed 300 pounds with a shiny bald head and no facial hair. The large black man could be an imposing figure if you got on his bad side. After his enlistment he was going to try out for one of the professional footballs. He had played high school and some junior college but he had found his way into trouble and his father and a sympathetic judge pressured him to join the army for 4 years. It was the best thing he could have done. He found discipline and was now a staff sergeant and helped train hand to hand combat techniques for soldiers deploy to Iraq. He had been on two tours but was not back at fort Campbell to finish out his last year. He was working on his marksmen ship and training some of the new recruits on pistol shooting and MP duties. He had enjoyed his time and thanked God that he found his way into the military. He was off on a long weekend and stayed with family in town. He and his long term girlfriend meet up and spent a long evening together and then he was off to do some target practice with an old sergeant he had not seen in 6 months since he retired due to injuries. Sergeant Lyons was running late as usual as he pulled into the small diner and parked his old Chevy truck. He and his father had rebuilt the old 67 and his dad had said it would be there for him when he got back from his tours. He was wearing his desert fatigues and had a thigh rig on with his 45 not so noticeable was the ka bar bowie that was on his left thigh. He walked into the diner past the row of cars and people waiting for family to go into the diner and entered and was greeted with the smells of home cooking. Of course it should smell like home cooking his maternal aunt was in the back cooking breakfast. She had worked in the same diner for 25 years. Most of the town at one time or another had eaten his aunts cooking and she was a fixture at the restaurant as much as the stoves or tables. His mother saw him first and ran over and hugged her son. She and his father had been out of town and was first seeing their boy for this visit today. She hugged him and fawned over him as he gave her a big bear-hug. His father came up and shook hands and then they embraced. His father fighting back tears his son had turned his life around and he was so proud.

“now son why do you come down here with that thing on your leg” She said.

“Momma I went over to the sarges house and we did some shooting of guns and shooting the breeze. This was the first time I had seen him since he got out and of course I ran late.” Sergeant Lyons explained.

His mother was about to say something else.

“hey what are you doing with that gun in here boy” a loud voice from one of the officers who had just walked in the door.

“who are you calling boy tiny Tim” Lyons replied and the three men broke into laughter.

The Sergeant disengaged from his mother for a moment to run over and embrace the two officers who he had graduated with and played on the football team together. The three men laughed and patted each other on the back and shook hands. Tim Davis had not been able to see his friend for almost two years. Each time he was back in town Tim had been out of town with family or training and had to settle for a quick call. Ronald Dawson was the second deputy and had see the sergeant 1 time since he had enlisted but he and Lyons were not as close as Tim and the sergeant. Though they had all played ball together Dawson came from a family that was not found of blacks although he never cared it was just easier to not have shown that part of his family to his young friend. He had always thought Isiah was a good kid and now turned into a good man.

“so you getting ready for retirement, are you going to come out here and apply for the force then you can carry that thing all the time.” Tim laughed.

“actually I got a reply from one of the pro-teams I contacted and they want me to come and do a training camp when I am discharged.” Lyons replied with a big smile.

“ SERIOUSLY! That is great man, hey we can catch up later you are going to be at Fort Campbell until you are out maybe we can head into the woods this fall and get a buck. Head over and do the family thing.” Tim said. The three men said their goodbys and the sergeant was off to sit with his family. They sat and talked and laughed as they caught up on what the family had been doing since they last sat down together. Lyons held a young nephew that was only 3 months old and talked to his father about the chance to play football.

“Son if that happens I am happy for your but there will be temptations.” His father said in a low soft tone.

“yes sir and I have already made those mistakes and will not be doing that again.” smiling as he reached behind his fathers head and looked him in the eyes. He jumped up quickly. “I forgot to bring in the present I got for mama, I will be right back.”

Two men sat in the small dark SUV in the parking lot of the little diner. They had not really known where they were going from Tulsa but drove and slept and found this place on the edge of a small town full with morning diners. They had loaded up the 4 magazines each and placed on in the Glocks. The men closed their eyes and prayed for guidance. They opened the doors and were stepping out of the Toyota.

Sergeant Lyons was close to a small SUV as the door opened and with his height he caught the glimpse of the glock in the mans overcoat as he pushed the door open.

“TIM GET EVERYONE DOWN.” Lyons yelled at the top of his voice. He could see his friend stand up and take a step towards him. He held his hands out palms down and waved up and down. He looked back towards the car and the man closest to hi was moving the gun towards the door and pointing it in his direction. The shocked look proof they had not seen him as they were moving out of the car. Sergeant Lyons was big but he was also fast as he kicked the door and unknown to him cracking the mans tibia in the process as it trapped his leg against the frame as the door came to. A loud scream and gun fire erupted from the pistol putting holes in the ceiling and then shattering the side window. Sergeant Lyons turned left after kicking the door and quickly ran and dove behind a truck. He felt a pain in his right thigh but that had to be put out of his mind now. He reached down for the 45 and pulled it out of the holster and racked the slide. Well he tried to rack the slide. He looked down and now knew why his thigh was hurting them men got at least one round off that struck his 45.

Deputy Tim Davis was sitting at his table sipping some coffee when he hear a loud voice from the parking lot and looked up to see his friend next to a small car and waving with his hands like he was praying to some island god. The explosion of the gun fire explained everything.

“EVERYONE GET DOWN!” Tim screamed as he saw the waitress; one of his friends daughters walking his way with plates of food; he lunged for her as the front glass exploded.

The terrorist getting out on the passenger side was surprised to hear the gun fire and looked back into the car. His comrade told him to continue as he was getting out of the car on unsteady legs and walking to stand beside the other shooter. There were no synchronized shoots, no timely change of magazine. They could see targets hiding behind concrete supports safe from their fire.

Deputy Dawson had fallen to the floor as quickly as he could when the shots rang out as Tim Screamed. He could see above the small concrete wall that used to hold the front windows and pulled his Beretta and fired 3 rounds but then held his fire. He though he might have hit one of the men but felt shortly that might be a non issue.

Sergeant Isiah Lyons was back on his feet he did not have his 45 but he did have his knife and he felt he could get within 21 feet before the men noticed. The perceived distance a shooter could react had been drilled into him and he had learned it well. His sergeant had knocked him on the ground and slashed him with the training knife to many times to count while he moved in with a knife and Lyons had a gun. Now it was his time. He was at a dead run and pulled the big knife from the sheath. The dark metal held in his hand as he moved closer and closer. The shooter closest to him had dropped a magazine and had fumbled for another and was close to seating it when the blade dropped along the outside of his wrist. The blade cut through like a razor and went to bone The magazine fell from his hands as he turned towards the assailant with the knife. A mistake he would soon pay for. Lyons already had the knife on another downwards strike and sliced from the right shoulder to the left hip flaying the skin and clothes almost to bone. The sergeant grabbed the right hand as it came around with the unloaded weapon and sliced between the elbow and wrist causing the gun to drop from his grasp and then with a quick left to right motion sliced the throat of the attacker. The second terrorist turned as he heard the screams from his cohort as the ammunition ran out and he was grabbing for a new magazine. The magazine locked in and the slide racked back and he squeezed the trigger. Sergeant Lyons pushed the dying man into his ally as the shots began to spray from the barrel. Lyons was able to get behind the man and wrapped his arm around the throat and pulled the man backwards and wrapped him with his legs and the large knife plunged into the mans kidneys and then into his chest several times before his arms went limp to his sides. Lyons kept hold for several more seconds and then pushed the man off him. He lay in the gravel and felt the drops of rain began to fall. Ronald Dawson ran out and looked down to his friend and saw a round spot of blood appearing on the lower belly of the sergeant.

“oh my God you have been hit.” Deputy Dawson said.

“hold on Ron give me a hand.” The big man reached up for the deputies hand. “ I do not think I got shot I think I stabbed myself in fight.” he said with more then a bit of disgrace in his voice. The deputy pulled up the camo shirt and saw a very nice stab into the abdomen. It was not very big so he would be surprised if it was a danger but the ambulance was on the way. “he let out a full and hearty laugh.” as he guided the man to a chair right inside one of the shattered windows.

“did they get many.” the sergeant asked in a worried tone.

Ron looked around and smiled I think Tim is the worse off ...”he got shot in the left butt cheek.”

relief washed over the young mans face as he left out a loud laugh and then winced from the pain in his side.

“yeah that is what you get, you got a nick and I get shot in the butt.” Tim said from his prone position on the floor the pretty waitress applying pressure to the gunshot wound.

His mother and father were close by as the ambulance pulled up and then another. Sergeant Lyons was loaded onto a gurney and wheeled into the ambulance beside his friend. They were taken to the ER and then for Tim into surgery. Isiah was fixed up with a couple of staples the rest of the injuries were minor scratched from the windows or people going to the ground. Isiah's aunt did get a burn to her hand and would have to miss her first day of work tomorrow but then it would still be considered a crime scene so it was not really a missed day.

Ronald Dawson was standing near the nursing station when his brother walked up pushing the janitors cart. Jess was 3 years younger and had been in trouble several times usually fights and usually with some minority and almost always on the loosing end. Their dad had died a few years back and Ron had not been able to move Jess from his prejudiced ideas.

“hey brother I heard you were in some shootout with some rag heads and that BLACK friend of yours fought them off.” Jess said with a sneer as he voiced black friend.

Ronald Dawson stood there and looked over towards his brother and with a wicked right cross laid him out on the floor. His brother fell to the floor with a stunned look and the three nurses stood silent as they looked on.

“let me tell you little brother if you speak of him again you say Mr. Lyons or Sir anything else even if you whisper it in your sleep and I will kick your ass all over this hospital. We clear?” The deputy said in a low tone leaning down over his sprawled out sibling. His brother nodded. The Deputy turned and walked towards the ER his friend emerging from the doorway looking down the hallway towards his friends brother laying on the ground.

“is everything alright.” Lyons asked concerned.

“Yeah just had a family discussion. I think I made my point completely clear.” Let me give you a lift back to your moms house they all were going there the last I was told.” Deputy Dawson offered.

The two men walked out of the automatic doors and climbed into the cruiser.

JT woke up late and headed downstairs his wife in the office area doing some of her payroll accounts and the kids were outside taking care of the animals she informed him. They let him sleep late and he had to admit he felt better for it. He decided on a cold breakfast although his wife had offered eggs and bacon. He took the cereal and headed to the basement and moved the mouse to check his mail. He checked his regular accounts and then over to the account he and Jeanie had used. She had emailed him back and told him she was comfortable with Agent Smith. She did not mention it but her dad had called some friends who had called some friends, that whole six degree of separation. He was glad that he had not overstepped some boundary of revolutionists. He smiled and noted a new email and wondered if he should open it , it could be spam or something more troublesome but then again he did give Tim this account. He opened it and it was from Agent Smith. After he worked the encryption code and opened the text he could see the message.

Mom

The trip home was good had company. Be safe.

Love Tim

He reread the message again and then scratched his chin. It looked like he had been followed home last night. He would have to call the Sheriff and make sure this was nothing to do with his men. He doubted this did but he would make the call just in case. He clicked over to the drudge report and looked over the headlines selected a story from Kentucky. It seems the terrorist that had attacked the small diner had tried it again without the same results. The two terrorists were dead of knife wounds and most of the diner crowd had scratches and scrapes. Chalk one more up for the good guys he thought. He sat back and relaxed as he ate the rest of his cereal and drank down the glass orange juice. He might have to place a call to this sergeant Lyons. They were now members of an exclusive but growing club.

chapter 37 part 1

Chapter 37

Jeanie Reynolds and Gael had fallen asleep in front of the fireplace. For the first time in many weeks she felt like she had gotten a restful sleep in the arms of Gael she had felt safe all night. She was a somewhat concerned that they kept falling asleep with their clothes on. A soft and content smile crossed her face and filled her body. There were dangers but she felt now they had a chance it was not her and Jerome Tanner against these killers they had backup. They would need to check on Gael's friend today and make sure his family is secure. The television chat last night from the President was worrisome. Had the Attorney General and the FBI director went rogue, would they reconsider now or push forward with their plans to ask for UN troops. She moved up and out of the arms of Gael and started a pot of coffee. She had to remember to get this coffee maker timer working she loved to wake up to the smell of coffee but did not like to wake up to make the coffee. The smell of fresh coffee filled the house as Gael moved and finally woke up. He kissed Jeanie as he walked by on his way to the restroom and accepted the cup of coffee when he returned. They sat in contented silence for some time before the phone rang. Her father was on the other end he had gotten information back from a friend in Texas and they have contacted Ranger Crockett and vouched for your friends he will be expecting a call from them.

“Thanks Dad.” She replied “we are going to have some breakfast and then we will head up your way.”

she did not hear and immediate reply.

“how about hold off on that a bit. I am expecting a local sheriff friend to be stopping by.” He said slowly.

She was unsure how to continue for such a good day earlier she was now very worried. “ Do we need to prepare to get out of dodge.” She asked with more then a tone of worry in her voice.

“No I do not think this is that type of visit I think Sheriff Walls is just coming by for a chat and to let me know we need to keep him up on...our outings. He is not a man that likes to hear of things after they happen. I am sure I am going to catch some shit for not keeping him informed.” her dad responded. “He is a local friend hon.” he added trying to put her mind at ease.

She felt much better now and expected this was some local contact that her dad had kept and just wanted to be in the loop so possibly he could keep his officers out of the loop or harms way which ever was needed. She had worried the other night what would have happened if they had come up on a police officer or had been pulled over. It would be better not to run into those problems and this was possibly how that was going to be avoided.

“alright dad give us a call when he has left. We will drive up and have lunch” She said

“will do” He replied.

Jeanie went over and typed a quick message to JT and let him know that Ranger Crockett would be expecting his call and included a cell number. She also laid his fears to rest in that she said it appears that Agent Smith is one of the good guys and that he had good sense about people. She added she looked forward to doing a show and could do one about anytime he wanted to try and sit down with her.

Sheriff Watts had not had the best last two days. He had the attack on two Muslim men at a local mosque who were surrounded by AK 47 and ammo. It all seemed like there was a firefight or something one man dead of knife wounds and then a second man who could not tell him anything while speaking Arabic to the Imam and another man. The Sheriff was sure he was being feed a line of bull. Now he was headed over to Trevor Reynolds house and old friend and more then likely intimately involved in all of this mess. Jeanie, Trevor’s daughter had seen her friend die in the streets of Phoenix and then make a less then veiled threat to whoever sent the men and now she was here and a mosque full of weapons that he had no right to confiscate was shot up and two men killed and then the next day a grocer and his family is attacked and 2 men are at the scene seriously injured and 4 men in a car are missing. Trevor was a good friend and they had served together for some time but Ernie knew that Trevor Reynolds was not a man to be trifled with. He had to let his old friend know that he had to keep a lower profile and that the people from the mosque had some firepower of their own. He knew the idea that the Mosque had weapons would not dissuade his old friend. He also knew that whatever Jeanie was involved with her father would back her up and he had friends that would back him up. If word came down to go into his compound like was rumored before the Presidents speech it would be a bloodbath. After the speech and all that was going on now he did not know if the local boys would try anything like Tyler Texas or just hunker down like the President said to. If it came down to it he would back his old friend up but for now he needed more information. He pulled up to the gate and punched in the security code. A small light flashed on a panel in the house. Trevor punched a button and the gate opened the sheriff drove through and down towards the main house. Waiting for him on the front porch was Trevor Reynolds. It had been a little more then a year since the two had last occasion to meet and it was good to see his old friend. The sheriff exited the car and walked over extending his hand.

“hello Ernie, how have you been old friend” Trevor Reynolds asked.

“I am about the same, how is Jeanie doing with all this terrorist business?” The Sheriff responded purposefully not asking how her father was doing with it.

“she is about as well as can be expected. Gerry was a good friend and they had worked together for several years.” Trevor replied.

“Trevor you know why I am here. We need to get some things settled about these little trips you have been taking and make sure my deputies stay out of your way but also that you guys do not get any civilians hurt in the process.” The Sheriff said walking over and taking a seat as Trevor waved him towards a chair.

“Listen Ernie you know I would not have let anything go down like this if we had a choice, this kind of just happened and took on a life of its own. Jeanie noticed some one from Phoenix and followed him and well things went bad from there. Gerry was a good friend and when this guy was here and she saw him well she went and did something without thinking and then we had to have a talk with some of the people and that lead to the problems near the market.” He said.

“yeah I know Jeanie and I know her father.” The Sheriff looked over at Trevor his eyes starring into the other mans with a knowing look.

Trevor smiled and shrugged his shoulders. “hey I did not start this but I will damn sure protect my girl.”

“yeah what about Gael is he protecting your girl also.” The sheriff smiled and asked.

Trevor smiled! He had always liked Ernie for his resourcefulness and he always had the ability to find out almost anything he wanted to know. They had been on a few missions at the end of the Sheriffs tours and he had proved useful at gathering intelligence. He also happened to be a fearless warrior and could be a mean SOB when he got angry.

“yes you could say Gael has taken an interest in the well being of Jeanie.” He responded.

“I thought as much from the eyewitness accounts.” The Sheriff nodded.

The two men sat in silence for a few minutes.

“Ernie you know this PC crap coming out of DC is going to get a lot of people killed and maybe start a civil war or worse. Now the Attorney General that weasel is going to the UN along with the FBI director. This crap is spinning out of control. The economy is about done for, they have not given weekly unemployment numbers since this all started. Have you noticed that? I hear tell that the unemployment rate is now well over 30 percent. Claims cannot be filed fast enough the states are being flooded with applications and there is no money to pay them even if they could process all the requests. The toilet is flushing my friend and we are spinning around the bowl. I do not know how people are going to make it. The stores are only going to allow credit for so long. Most of them have been allowing 50 dollars a week but that is going to stop as soon as they do not get something from the government. People are scared and when they are scared they can make bad choices. We have already had the violence at the FEMA facilities trying to help the people on home medical equipment. Riots in several cities, at least that idiot in the White House had sense enough to stop the registrations... confiscations but it may be to late for some areas. Some areas around Detroit churches have been burned to the ground and the only people in charge seems to be Muslim and involved with the IDG. A black baptist church was firebombed two nights ago. Twenty people were injured and 5 are in critical condition they had to be flown out of state for care. The hospital has only partial power. This is bad and getting worse and frankly as out of line as Jeanie was someone has to do something. We may be over the edge already. Even if we can stop the attacks the economy is in the crapper and is not going to recover anytime soon. ” Trevor Reynolds said to his friend.

The Sheriff nodded as he listened. He knew things were getting bad and some places it had went to worse. “I understand but I need to be kept informed as to problems that might spill over and cause more problems. Can you do that for me?”

“Yeah I can do that for you. I will have a talk with Jeanie and let her know we need to make sure there are not more surprise encounters.” Trevor said.

The two sat and chatted about life and told some old war stories while they drank down a beer. Jeanie and Gael waited at the cabin. They had some catching up to do of their own. Dan had called and let her know he was changing addresses. He was worried about a car that he had seen more then a few times now. He already had a place worked out and would be setup later today. If she ended up doing that show with JT today he could have it on air later. She worried about Dan and hoped he was just being paranoid but she would have a friend of her dads drop over to see him and make sure he was safe. She finished up some work on the website and sent them off to Dan with a note telling him to be safe. Her dad had called about 10 and said the Sheriff had left and that everything was alright he just wanted to be kept informed. Jeanie and Gael had went out for her to shoot the suppressed 22. She marveled at how accurate it was. They drove up to the house and had an early lunch with her dad and she remembered to ask if he would get someone to drop by and check on Dan.

Dan Murphy had liked the little apartment in the storage area but he did not like that he had seen the same sedan three times and they did not seem to be adding or taking anything with them just opening the space they rented and looking over toward Dans car. He had decided to move after he found out from the owner they had rented their unit just after Dan had moved in. He had borrowed an old truck from a friend and packed the small amount of stuff he had and pulled out of the lot. The landlady gave little argument when he paid for next months rent and packed up. She did not ask for a forwarding address and he did not offer. He had already rented a place before all this started, he knew that sooner or later people would come looking for him and he wanted to be able to get lost in a hurry. He pulled onto the highway and headed to the outskirts of town. He had found an old warehouse that he could rent with little identification. He pulled off the main highway and down the ramp and took a left heading towards the set up abandoned buildings. Two cars back a black SUV followed along keeping just outside of view of the old pickup the two men dressed in dark pullovers and khaki pants. Except for the government issued Glocks they could have been out heading for an early morning tee time. As Dan drove down the isolated road he noticed the SUV behind him now and getting closer. The black SUV sped up and rammed the back of the old truck causing it to fishtail before Dan regained control.
“Call Jeanie” Dan said in to the headset.

It took a few second for the call to be placed and he heard Jeanie on the other end.

“hey there it looks like I waited a little to long to head out. Sorry I have friends who will help if anything happens to me. They will contact you.” Jeanie could hear Dan talking quickly.

“Dan what is going on.” She screamed in to the phone.

“a black SUV 555 GBV they must have followed me” Dan said with more panic in his voice.

The SUV had rammed the old truck two more times and Dan had almost spun out. He was sure if the truck stopped they would just shot him. He pushed down hard on the accelerator of the old eight cylinder and hoped he saw a car soon if there were witnesses they might back off it they thought they could be seen.

“Dan where are you?” She asked.

“ I rented an old warehouse back towards the west end of town.” He replied.

Her father had heard the worry in her voice and pushed the speaker button as he retrieved his own cell phone. He could hear the panic in Dans voice as he told his daughter where he was.

He father checked and found the name of a friend on the Phoenix police force and called hoping that his friend would be on duty.

“Trevor how are you old man.” A friendly voice said.

“John hate to call with a problem but Dan the young man that worked with Jeanie is being ran off the road over on the west side of town near the old warehouses. Can you help him out.” Her father said quickly.

“hold on. Chopper one can you get to the old warehouse district on the west side as quickly as possible.” her father hearing over the cell connection.

“Roger patrol I can be there in less then a minute.”

Jeanie was on the phone as she could hear Dan scream and the sounds of the truck crashing.

Dan took one last hit and the truck fishtailed one more time but hit a imbedded piece of concrete and then rolled over flipping once as it went into the ditch. Dan had lost the ear set and tried to right himself as the old truck came to rest. His vision was blurred as he pulled himself towards the door and reached out and grabbed the frame of the door and pulled himself out of the vehicle. He could see the SUV had stopped just on the road where his truck flipped off. One of the men was standing by the drivers side door and the other he did not see. He quickly grabbed his backpack and unzipped the side pocket removing the small revolver inside. He thought that Jeanie would be proud if she actually knew that many months before all this had started he took her advice and got a revolver and took several classes. At this very moment it seemed like way to few classes. He crouched by the front of the truck and looked under the hood to see if he could see which way the man was coming. Dan finally caught a glimpse of someone coming down close to the back of the pickup. He stood still with his back to the wheel and pointing the gun where someone would come around the end of the wrecked hulk. He started to pull the hammer back on the small Smith & Wesson 38 and then noticed a piece of corrugated culvert sticking up from the ground surrounded by thick branches. Dan quickly pushed forward and then slid down beside the pipe tucked under it as far as he could squeeze. He held the gun steady pointed right in line with the end of the pipe and pulled the hammer back and placed his finger on the trigger. Dan could hear in the distance the faint sounds of a helicopter. He could here the man screaming from up on the road but could not make out what was being said. He could also hear the steps of the man as he got closer to Dans hiding place. The small revolver was leveled with the end of the pipe and Dan could see the mans shadow moving closer to the end of the pipe. The helicopter was getting closer and then he saw the ankle come into view, he held his breath as he could see more and more of the mans leg. The right foot was placed down on the grass and Dan could see weight being transferred to it. He squeezed the trigger just as he had been taught. The bullet tore through the ankle and the man fell back screaming. Dan lay perfectly still and readied another round. He could hear loud sounds like someone clamoring back through the brush but they were mixed with the screams of the man he had just shot in the ankle. He did not move but remained calm and still. He could now feel his head and back hurt bad from the accident and he could feel a small trickle of blood running down his cheek. The helicopter was hovering over the area of his truck now and he could make out what sounded like the other vehicle speeding off. It was not until an ambulance was on the scene that he finally made his location known.

Jeanie was listening to the open connection and grew more frantic with each new sound. When she heard the gun shot her heart fell.

“John do you have any information, John... John” Jeanie’s father was speaking loudly into the phone.

“Trevor hold on”

“patrol we have a dark SUV speeding away, do you want me to pursue or stay overhead until the ambulance arrives.”

“air one stay over the location, we may have someone down in the truck and injured.” John replied.

“Roger”
a few long minutes later.

“patrol we have the ambulance on site and there is a person coming out from the wreck. He seems to be ok but the ambulance will transport.”

“roger air one thanks for the help.” John said.

“Trevor it looks like he is able to walk to the ambulance I will meet them at the hospital. I will have him give you all a call.” John said into the cell phone.

“John I cannot thank you enough, I will contact some friends out that way and have them go over and meet him there. They will be able to watch over him when he is released.” Trevor Reynolds said with obvious excitement.

Her dad hung up the phone and called a friend in the local militia down in Phoenix he ran a gun shop in town. Her dad cursed when the cell phone went to a message and he quickly explained why he called and that he needed someone down at the hospital to be there for when Dan was released. After the call he turned to Jeanie and told her that Dan was being transported and the deputy would meet him at the hospital. He could see that she was furious that someone had went after Dan.

“Darling I know you are angry but he is ok and we will get him someplace safe to work from.” her dad said.

“ I want to know who has that tag number.” She replied with a tinge of anger bordering on rage.

Gael spoke from behind them. “It is FBI issue.” When her father and she looked back over their shoulders at him with surprised looks. “ I have people too.” he smiled and said.

The three let out a chorus of laughter. When they had stopped her father had a far away look on his face. This usually meant that he was considering something and that he was focused on something to the exception of all else.

“Dad whats up.” Jeanie asked wondering what grabbed his mind that way.

“ I doubt that the local FBI would really do this. Not at this time. I know you guys have put up some information and everything but with the crap from DC this seems like really odd timing.” He said.

“Well how good a friend is your deputy and could he make inquiries without to much hassles or to many questions.” Jeanie asked.

“He is pretty well connected with the District Attorneys office, his brother is like a lead prosecutor and his uncle is some federal judge down there. When he calls back I will let him know what we found out leaving out how”as he looked back at Gael who looked back with a sheepish grin “and see if he can talk to the FBI Agent In Charge.” He dad said.

As they all relaxed and sat back down Jeanie’s phone rang. “ Yes”

“is this Jeanie Reynolds.” The voice asked. It was a female voice with a twinge of a Japanese or Asian accent.

“who is this and how did you get my number.” She asked.

“Is Dan alright or do you know if anything has happened to him.” The voice replied quickly.

She decided to answer although not exactly sure why. “ he was in an accident and is headed to the hospital with some friends to watch out for him it looks like he will be fine but I am waiting for a call from him.”

The voice on the other end lost some of the panic. “that is good we will be in touch if you need us.” The phone line went dead.

Jeanie held the phone to her ear for several seconds with a look of amazement.

“ what was that.” Her dad asked.

“ I am not sure, They asked about Dan and said they would be in touch if needed. How could they have known so soon?” She asked to no one in particular.

“That boy might be smarter then you guys ever knew.” He smiled a knowing smile looking over at his daughter.

She sat down in silence and waited for the call from the hospital and getting an update on Dans condition.

JT headed out earlier then he wanted but after the email last night he wanted to add some extra security to the house. He had read about some motion sensors and maybe some infrared cameras. He had decided to head down to Radio Shack and see what they had and then check online also. He had decided to call Jeanie and ask if she wanted to do a small show today and then maybe a larger call in show later. He also planned to make a call out to the Ranger in Texas. He had thought about calling Agent Smith but decided that he would tell the Ranger the basics and then he could check from his end or JT could get Agent Smith to call and maybe even get him a copy of the report. He drove down Dixie Highway keeping a wary eye for anything that looked suspicious. The small outdoor mall parking lot had few cars for a weekday and this early he assumed that was pretty normal but there was a line forming at the Walmart. Apparently for food you had to be in line and they were giving 50 dollars a week to people who had identification from the area. People who could pay with dollars were allowed in at all times. Two police cars sat out in the parking lot and allowed the two guards at the door were unarmed but two more men were standing around the entrance and did not look like they were shopping. The

electronics store still had a few minutes to open so he walked down and went in to doors away from the line. As he walked in the door a man appeared before him and asked if he was paying in cash. JT looked at the man he was not huge but 200 pounds with a wiry frame and a stubble covered face like he had not sleep or shaved in a few days.

“I asked if you were paying in cash if not get in line like everyone else.” He said now with some anger just noticeable.

JT had not really anticipated to come to the store but he had brought about 500 dollars with him in case he had found something he wanted to buy. He just did not like the mans attitude. Maybe he was getting short tempered with all the crap that had happened but he looked into the mans eyes. “ What I have or don't is none of your business. I sure do not see a badge or a name tag to signify you work here so back off.”

The young mans eyes glared with anger and he stepped forward. As he did the manager saw that one of his doormen was talking to Jerome Tanner and it did not look like it was a nice conversation. The doormen could be caustic when asking if the people had cash and well some people did not like to be bothered and this looked to be heading for a problem. As the young doorman took another step he was reaching for what JT assumed was a gun and now JT was worried this had gotten a lot more serious then he had wanted but he was not going to stand her and have a gun pulled on him. He had a much smoother draw then the young man and his revolver was at the mans chest before he had reached the gun at his back. The doorman’s eyes were wide with fear now and he could not believe that this old man had a gun to his chest. JT was angry. He was angry with himself he could have answered the question but for some reason he just was not in that mood today. Maybe with all that had happened he was not longer willing to be put out like that maybe … maybe he was just a grouch some times. He had an inward chuckle but now he had to tone this back down. He noticed the other doorman had noticed something was wrong.

“JT how are you doing. I am glad you are alright after that stuff up near feeders supply. “ The Manager said. “ Doug this is Jerome Tanner he has been shopping her for sometime he is fine.”

Doug’s eyes grew even wider as he recognized the name and now was more worried then ever because this man had actually fired that gun and he knew would fire it again if needed.

“Doug please step back.” The manager said.

“I was just asking if he had cash sir. I did not mean to insult him.” Doug said in a quiet defensive tone as he stepped back from the gun.

“I am sure you did not but maybe we need to work on our people skills.” The manager said smiling.
“I am sorry about that JT, they are working a lot and getting tired. There is no excuse to be rude though.” The manager said, apologizing.

“J...John it is not completely his fault. I think maybe get them some tan khakis and a pull over with a name tag. Just the t-shirt jeans and biker boots he could have been anyone. Then again I have been told recently I am a grouch sometimes so that could have something to do with it also. ” JT said smiling. “I am sorry for pulling the gun.”

“with what you have been going through I am surprised you do not carry it openly.” John replied with a bit of a laugh in his voice.

“Thanks John I will try and not have any shoot out while shopping.” JT replied.

“ I would appreciate that.” John Said as he walked away and over to the doormen who were milling around the inside area.

JT was right two outside and two inside and the two inside would check for people shopping and using cash. He grabbed cart and walked back the isle not sure not was he was going to buy since he really had not come there for anything. He walked back and grabbed a small ham and some bread and milk and walked to the hardware area and grabbed some deck screws and nails. He checked out and walked out the door past the young doorman who was now dressed in khakis pants and a blue pullover with a hand written name badge. The young man nodded his head slightly as did JT letting him know no hard feelings. Maybe he should have said something but he was not going that far today. As he walked back to his car one of the cruisers pulled up beside him and he knew this was going to be trouble. The window rolled down as he turned to face the car.

“hello officer can I help you.” JT said.

“ Nope Mr. Tanner we just wanted to make sure everything was alright.” The officer said.

“ ahhh that back there nope just a disagreement in dress code.” He said smiling.

“yeah we told them the doormen stopping the cash paying people should be in some kind of uniform, it looks like what we could not make them aware of you seemed able to do.” The officer said with a wide grin.

JT smiled and told the officers to be safe as they drove away. He put his purchases him the truck and went into the now open electronics store and spent the next hour learning all about wireless cameras and motion sensors. He took two of the cameras that had night vision capabilities and could detect motion around 8 feet away he was already thinking he could park the old VW truck down the drive and use and inverter and see if he could get a full night out of the battery. It was a start and he drove back towards home feeling a little silly over the confrontation but then he remembered the officers words and maybe he had helped just a tad.
Dan was being checked out at the hospital and other then a 4 inch cut on his head he was mainly bruised and banged up. He was not sure how many times he thanked the deputy who had sent the helicopter but he was thankful to be alive. He would have to call his friend and let him know that the truck was toast. He would need to find someplace safe now. Someone was on to him and he had to find a place to hide. He had signaled his friend in Japan he would assume they already called Jeanie to check on his status if it was critical they were to nuke everything and make it again so they could help Jeanie start over. Since it was non critical they would just wait and play it by ear. He would contact them right after a call to Jeanie and thank her and her father.

He was waiting to be discharged when he heard a lovely voice from behind the curtain. She had a bit of Texas twang with just hint of something else he could not place. She was telling the nurse she wanted to see her boyfriend. He had been in an accident and she wanted to see that he was alright with her own two eyes. Wow must be the day for this type of stuff wonder if he had been ran off the road also. He smiled to himself as the curtain was pulled back and a slim brunette stood there looking at him. He was just about to say she had picked the wrong room but just as he opened his mouth to speak she ran towards him. He eyes grew wide and he was speechless as she leaned down and kissed him fully on the lips. His hands were temporarily stretched out to his side as he was sure this girl had just made a mistake.

“I am so glad you are alright” she said as she broke the kiss and placed her lips on his cheek. “I was so worried about you. I told Daddy he had to drive me right down and make sure you were fine.” He Texas accent completely out in the open with that last line. Her arms entwined his body and bumped the still numb stitches as she whispered in his ear. “ just play along we are friends of Jeanie’s dad and we are going to get you some place safe.”

His eyes shot wide. How did they know. Who were they and would she kiss him again. Just as with any 20 year old the important stuff had to be considered he smiled. As if she read his mind she leaned down for another mind bending kiss but this time he was not caught off guard and kissed her back as his hands landed on her hips and wandered down to her butt. She leaned up and he was worried he was about to get in some serious trouble but she smiled.

“You better watch out for that if you think that accident put a knot on your head my daddy catches you feeling up his virginal little girl and you will feel like you have been in an accident after he gets through with you.” She said her smile never leaving her face. She leaned down and kissed him again and giggled. “well just don't let him catch you.”

Dan was confused and excited and thankful all at the same time. She sat down and held his hand as they waited for the doctor to release him. He had to call Jeanie after he got out of here and thank her. He looked over at the beautiful young lady and laid back in the hospital bed. After all the things that had happened today and almost being killed in the wreck of his friends truck his last thought before he dozed off was that the lovely brunette who was apparently his new girlfriend did not kiss like a virgin. He dozed off as she held his hand securely.
