Mystery Illness Baffles Doctors; Frustrates Patients

POSTED: 7:43 pm PST February 6, 2005
UPDATED: 8:03 pm PST February 7, 2005

SAUSALITO -- Is an unknown disease hitting the Bay Area or is it just a case of mass delusion? If you ask intensive care nurse Cindy Casey she'll tell you that the mystery disease is very real and very painful.

Casey is one of at least 150 Bay Area residents battling the illness that is characterized by lesions and strange string-like fibers.

"It sounds really strange, it's kind of understandable why people don't believe us, because it sounds so weird," Casey said. "The lesions start out as bumps that are itchy, little round raised bumps. The fibers are quite alarming."

When she turned to doctors for help, her frustrations began to mount. Casey said dermatologists at her own hospital suggested she was mentally ill.

"It sounds so bizarre to them that they take the quick way out and say this can't be, you've got to be delusional or making this up," she said.

Susan Bishop of Santa Rosa has a similar story.

"It's the overall pain I have every day, my joints hurt," she said. "

For some, the pain and frustration simply gets to be too much. That was the case, friends and family say, for Dillon King of Soquel. Last month, friends and family eulogized the 37-year-old former medical assistant after he committed suicide.

"It was really so depressing the hardest thing was seeing him just get worse all the time," said Wendy Augason, King's mother.

King's fiancée -- Elizabeth Strong -- says she's certain he picked up some kind of weird infection and that she's now beginning to show the same symptoms.

"It started as a small sore and kept spreading," she said. "I had doctors tell me that basically, it was delusional, then because it was the two of us with it we were feeding on each other, and egging each other on."

KTVU broke this story last year and now we've learned more than 1,200 people nationwide say they have the same skin lesions and bizarre fibers. Ironically, most are in the medical profession. Adults as well as children have it and it may be contagious.

Evidence is beginning to mount linking this syndrome to Lyme Disease from tick bites.

"The population of people with Lyme Disease believe this is another infection that travels with the Lyme organism," said Dr. Jennifer Choate, a hematologist who helped treat Dillon. "It makes sense because it is in that group we are seeing this pattern."

Marin microbiologist Jenny Haverty has also be studying the mystery malady.

"I accepted specimens from four different people in four different counties in the Bay Area, and I looked at them very carefully over and over again under the microscope," she said. "The colors and shapes of the fibers of each individual were very, very similar."

Tests on similar fibers taken from Bishop's skin and those of several other patients in the Bay Area show them to be tiny tubes of protein. But how and why the filaments are formed remains a mystery for now.

maybe the fiber

strands are some sort of debris from space firing into people at high velocity so they didn't even know it until the wounds began to fester or poison the surrounding tissue. Maybe the fibers arent actually growing, maybe they're just sky splinters.

Then again, maybe the "strands" are of terrestrial origin eminating from some source.

Reminds me of an Anne McCaffery book. Anyone remember the "threads" from her dragon rider series? Heheheh

I'm reaching I know... But the body can react to foreign substances (the fibers) that are toxic. So far they haven't found a new virus or bacteria. So maybe the fibers are the cause and not the byproduct.

This was posted by gisgaia on that same thread~

This is really creepy stuff ... look at these sketches of worm parasites that would stick their heads out of infants / children's bodies ... also caused epilepsy and death. These were observed by Physicians in Europe during the times of the Plagues around 1500 - 1700. The people called this infestation "DRACONTIA" or DRANCUNCULI" according to the info at this link I've been reading: From the "Annals of Medical History, n.s., VII (1935), 467-479"

Yup, we have had previous posings in the past on this........not so new, unknown yes............creepy, yes............deserves more research immediately, yes.............a lot more people will end up being "exposed" to it before we find out anything real........and then...........it will probably end up being another case of "acceptable risk" or whatever you want to call it (like culling the weak). Not a humble opinion, just something I've come up with through all my reading on all of the subjects concerned.

Hair is protean.

Animals do not synthesize cellulose. It is a unique characteristic of plants, if I recall… (Please, by all means correct me if I am wrong! It’s been a few years since biology class)

Animal hairs are protein, plant hairs are cellulose. I see references to the "hairs in question" re: this particular affliction being made up of protein and then cellulose. Can't be both at the same time. Possible answer: Maybe they're TWO different parasites entirely?

MARANTHA!! Even so, come LORD JESUS!!!
HERE:
http://www.ambergriscaye.com/pages/town/botfly.html
is what they are....they are the larva of the human bot fly, Dermatobia hominis

The pictures show detail and look exactly like the ones shown under the side note of the article previously cited in the first post of this thread.
It is titled:Morgellons Disease

From the web site Posted here, in this post, here are some of the experiences stated on that web site:
(Fair Use Application for Education and Discussion)

We went back to the Dr's this morning, clutching a medical report on Botflys. We pursuaded him to open up the wound. He found a 6mm long larva. The picture of it is to the right.
My wife is totally relieved now (although a little traumatized). The Dr is sending the larva off for positive identification. He doesn't anticipate and further complications.

It certainly seemed that she was reacting to the larva. Her lymph glands were going up and down since the bite. Apparently the swelling was very pronounced because it was on her head. If it had been on her back, leg or arm, it would have appeared much smaller because the swelling would have been absorbed by the muscle. On her head, there was nowhere for the swelling to go but up and out.

The pain was also severe because of the presence of a lot of pain receptors, nerves and blood flow in the scalp, compared to, say, a person's back. That is probably also why her face swelled up as well.
*******************************
An egg-laden female botfly captures a night-flying female mosquito and glues her eggs on to it. When the mosquito is released and bites a victim, the host's body heat triggers an egg to hatch. It falls off and burrows in. The larva secures itself with two anal hooks, secreting an antibiotic into its burrow, which staves off competing bacteria and fungi. Its spiracle pokes out of the tiny hole, and a small mound forms which will grow to the size of a goose egg before the mature larva falls out. Should you be unfortunate enough to fall prey to a larva - an extremely unlikely occurrence for the average visitor - you have three cures available. One is to use the acrid white sap of the matatorsalo (bot killer), which kills the larva but leaves its corpse intact. Another is to apply a piece of soft, raw meat to the top of the airhole. As the maggot must breath, it burrows upward into the meat. A third is to apply a generous helping of Elmer's glue or cement to the hole. Coating the skin surface with vaseline also will force the lil buggers out. Cover this with a circular patch of adhesive tape; seal this tape with a final application of glue. Squeeze out the dead larva the next morning. The only other alternative is to leave it to grow to maturity, giving you an opportunity to experience the transmogrification of part of yourself into another creature. It only hurts when the maggot squirms and if you swim, presumably because you are cutting off its air supply. Don't try to pull it out because it will burst. Part of its body will remain inside and cause an infection." Thank you for adding that bit to your guide book Harry. (If we had not read that I am not sure what would have happened to Mark). Harry S. Pariser is the author of Explore Costa Rica & Explore Belize
****************************
Cutaneous infestation by Bot Fly larvae, Dermatobia hominis, is endemic to tropical regions of Central and South America which typically victimizes small rodents and livestock. Because human myiasis is exceedingly rare even in endemic areas, correct diagnosis outside the endemic area is difficult because of unfamiliarity with the disease. Lesions produced by this insect are easily mistaken for cutaneous furunculosis. Though the disease is self-limited it commonly causes significant pain to it's victims. In humans, early correct identification would avoid unnecessary treatment with antibiotics and allow earlier removal of larvae. To our knowledge, we present only the second case of scrotal myiasis caused by Dermatobia hominis in literature to date. The larvae were excised under local anesthesia with excellent results.

I KNOW what these are!! :shkr: I had an infestation of them after a summer spent in the woods....No one, other than the "old timers" around here, knew what they were...the doctors all told me I was carzy, but I pulled several of them out of my skin and looked at them under a microscope!! The "fibers" are the feeding tubes, which go up to the surface of the skin. The way to kill them is to bathe in "skin So Soft'....a VERY strong solution of it, or use one of the treatments for lice. The lice treatment will kill them, but they still remain in your skin. They eventually, work out of the skin through the wearing away of dead skin cells. Thay ARE painful, itch, and cause huge lesions if the larva is not killed. They are generally found in areas where there are a lot of deer or squirrel, but as noted in one of the experiences from the web site, can also "travel" on misquitos.

IOUJC, you said this above:

I am also thinking you could also kill them by soaking every day for a while in a very hot extremely salty (at least two cups) bath. Years ago, I had a few skin problems and used to do that. Don't rinse it off and do drip dry. It took a month of the baths for about a half hour a day, but everything was just gone and never came back. This is before I knew what a dermatologist was. Nothing can live in that kind of salt bath for long. Hope this helps someone else.

Greetings,...And May We Be Saved From Darkness, By The Light!

I am taking the opportunity made available by Sorcha's recent article on the subject of the "Fiber disease" To further expose readers to some of the hallmarks that distinguish this emerging plague.

This is knowledge that may one day prove very valuable to all concerned.

This is a creature of whom I have written volumes, here and on other Internet sites. And....As Sorcha intimates, this abomination is a creature from the darkest corner of hell.

If indeed, as Sorcha claims, the "wyrm" was known to the ancients, then it must be that it's keepers have put it back in it's cage at some time in the distant past.

Perhaps now, the door keepers slumber beside open doors?

Or...Are they wakeful and malevolent of intent?

I suspect that this "wyrm" that is mistakenly called "morgellon's disease, is the product of the blackest genius and of the highest order.

To date, very few if any sites on the Internet have an accurate picture or a complete understanding of this plague as it TRULY exists.

It is a creation, so well magnificently well designed and adapted to humans as a host, that I am willing to wager that there are likely less than a half dozen world class micro-biologists on the planet, (still living, that is) who have the skill or the laboratory facilities necessary to engineer such a magnificent work of evil art.

Although there have been several suicides by desperate victims, in and of itself, the current effects of affliction do not appear (so far) to be initially fatal.

However, evidence points to the possibility that it slowly eats it's victims alive, beginning with the skin and then progressing to the internal organs and finally the brain. There are also reports of a rather odd empathetic symbiosis that manifests itself on a behavioral and "mental" level between the parasite and its unfortunate victim. About the best analogy I can come up with to describe this relationship is a modified version of the "Borg."

For example:

Aside from it's physical "organic" effects upon it's victims, it is a documented fact that several forms of adverse emotional behaviors are created out of the progress of the affliction. This includes massive depression, chronic fatigue, and a loss of interest in all things positive in nature, including family, job, etc.

The organism is both systemic and topical, existing in 5 (and possibly 6) different forms, all of which may be found individually and jointly within and on the body of the host.

It adepts itself to mimic the products of the body, such as skin, mucus and hair. It does this by imitating them in form and function, and then by replacing them. It often emerges in it's macro-fiber form, out of healthy hair follicles. In this form, It can then be seen growing side by side with the original hair, both of whom are occupying the same follicle.

However, the parasite soon kills the original hair and replaces it. It does the same with skin. The skin is replaced by a small flat fluke-like form. These can grow together to form huge patches of what appears to be a thick calloused skin. In fact, it is simply the protective shield of the parasite. It insinuates itself within and under this shield in a lateral fashion. It can be upon occasion be snagged with tweezers and removed. In the removal, it must be torn out through the skin in a manner that is very similar to the way a "rip" string is pulled through and out of the paper of a bag of dog food. Since this is the feeding form of the parasite on the surface, there is always some bleeding that results.

It is also this particular form that spawns the nematomorphic worm. This worm, is generally clear, or white, and is the form that is also found using cotton as a vector. When removed from wounds or the skin, this particular nematomorphic worm will undulate and twist in a manner that is very much like that of an angry cobra snake.

Several forms produces the worm. The "wyrm" can be initially attached to the fluke, and at later stages can be found in free form. It is also found in the sluglike 'mucus' form. It is the function of the worm to then begin to devour flesh and body fluids.

The mucus form bears much in similarity to a slug or snail. It is also born out of the fluke form (though there is evidence that any and all of these forms may be able to reproduce the
others)

This form is fond of occupying the nasal cavities, the lungs, and the intestinal tract.

It is the mucus "snail" that will be found carrying the red, blue, and other colored micro fibers. It also produces and spreads the hard black "pepper-like" granules that I suspect are a form of hard shell traveling case for future generations of this thing.

It is important that we keep in mind that these variations are all but one form. They are parts, (if you will) of a Borg-like colony of creatures that can exist as one, yet are one and the same in different forms. As in a bee hive, they are all simply the sum of the collective, existing only in the form assigned to the successful completion of the necessary task as dictated by the current environment.

Interestingly, this parasite also has a proclivity to create skin lesions that will not heal as long as the organism in it's macro-fiber, Nematomorphic worm, or multi colored micro fiber forms continue to remain present.

These forms, (especially the macro (hair sized) fiber appear to facilitate the maintenance of body lesions by exhibiting an uncanny ability to block the body from healing itself at any given location where it has created a lesion.

Further, any accidental cut will instantly become the domain of this creature.

It seems as though any attempt to remove or actively interfere in the process and progress of this organism generates a most violent and actively hostile response on the part of the "collective"

It does this by going into what I call, "production overdrive"
Producing a prodigious amount of seed pods and other responses that simply overwhelm the available attention capabilities of the host.

There remains much yet to be written in the analysis of the nature and behavior of this creature. But that remains the domain of another place and time. In the mean time, I urge you.....be wary of cotton, and above all...

Beware of the "Wyrm, The Serpent, and The Dragon"

Is this related to the flagellates or dinoflagellates?

I think these are associated with water.

I recently heard a news report warning about flagellate-contaminated bottled water, especially from France.

Someone recently asked me about funny foot bumps, discovered after the person splashed in mud puddles.

Are the "hairs" cilia?

Bottled Water Blamed For Rash
With Fibers, Not Chemtrails
From Jim Mortellaro
2-22-5

I recently read a piece on your site about a strange illness which, if memory serves, was attributed to Chem Spraying. Pustules appear on the skin of the afflicted, which often show fibers similar to those found to be from Chemtrail Spraying. I ran across a site which explains what this disease is, and shows irrefutable evidence that the disease is not caused by chemspraying.

I present this information for your readers' enlightenment...

Morgellons Disease

This condition exhibits as pustules and the presence of strange fibers within the lesion. The bacterium causing this condition has been found. It is named (try to take a deep breath and get someone else to pronounce it) Stenotrophomonasmaltophilia.

The crawling skin feeling is caused by multiple flagella on the bacterium and the fibers are actually produced by the bacterium. Bottled water has been blamed for the largest element of infection and the biggest offender is bottled water from France. One study observed that one-third of the bottled waters from France contain this organism.

The treatment is intensive and requires high dosages of sulfur drugs and antibiotics, although the bacteria appear to be resistant to many antibiotics.

In conclusion, whilst it may not be the best thing in the world, drink water from your tap and stop spending money on sucking up germs for your trouble. Many bottled waters here in the States are also affected.

One nice thing about this mess, is the fact that the bacterium is killed by boiling. Further, if you like bubbles as I do, carbonated water is immune to the bugs. This may be due to the higher base figure and/or the processing of carbonated water.

Search MORGELLONS DISEASE for more information on this unusual and recent phenomena.

Bottled Water Blamed For Rash
With Fibers, Not Chemtrails
From Jim Mortellaro

Concerning this article I would like to see some medical studies or lab results stating that this organism is the cause. I would have to believe that Drs would recognize such a bacteria in these patients it seems to be a quite common one..It seems this is in the pseudomonas family and I cannot find any reference to sores growing fibers~ not saying this could not be a possibility, but I would think since it is a very recognizable infection that they could have easily cultured this in a swab or smear~ ....blessings T

Background: Stenotrophomonas (Pseudomonas) maltophilia is an aerobic gram-negative bacillus that is an infrequent pathogen in humans and is found in a variety of aquatic environments. S maltophilia is an organism of low virulence and is a frequent colonizer of fluids used in the hospital setting, ie, irrigation solutions and intravenous (IV) fluids, and of patient secretions, ie, respiratory secretions, urine, or wound exudates. S maltophilia usually must bypass normal host defenses to cause human infection. For example, if fluid in an irrigation solution becomes colonized with this organism, irrigating an open wound can cause colonization or infection of the wound. S maltophilia usually is not capable of causing disease in healthy hosts without the assistance of invasive medical devices that bypass normal host defenses.

http://www.emedicine.com/med/topic3457.htm

http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/eid/vol7no1/valdezate.htm

The organism originally known as Pseudomonas maltophilia was placed in the genus Xanthomonas in 1983.5 In 1993, it was reclassified Stenotrophomonas maltophilia and remains the only member of the genus Stenotrophomonas.6 S. maltophilia is ubiquitous and propagates in moist environments. Environmental isolates have been found in water sources (bottled water, wells, rivers), sewage, soil, plants, and food.7,8 Hospital sources of S. maltophilia include ice-making machines, sinks, shower heads, disinfectant solutions, intravenous infusates, the hands of health care personnel, and cardiac, dialysis, and ventilator equipment.9-14 Human sites of isolation include respiratory secretions, blood, urine, wounds, and pericardial and cerebrospinal fluid.8

Update

1. A University Biology Professor and researcher has recently offered to work with our foundation to study Morgellons Disease. We will let you know any information that is discovered as soon as possible.

2. You can listen to a radio broadcast concerning Morgellons Disease which aired several nights ago. We have not confirmed Dr. Schwartz's information, as it is quite preliminary. Please note that he sees this as an infectious disease and not a delusional disorder. Together, all people investigating this disease will discover the etiologic agent(s) involved, as well as the optimal treatment protocol. The broadcast was 2 hrs long, with tons of commercial breaks.
http://mp3.rbnlive.com/Stadt05.html

3. Please send an email to your political representatives. Please include the information below, but be sure to preface it with your personal information. You can email five individuals: Your 2 US Senators, Congressman, President Bush and VP Cheney, with one email form:
http://www.visi.com/juan/congress/cgi-bin/mailform2.cgi?site=ctc
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
National Public Health Threat: Morgellons Disease
The emerging infectious disease which we have labeled "Morgellons Disease" is affecting thousands of families in the United States. The number of infected individuals reporting symptoms to our foundation has increased dramatically in recent months, and we feel this situation represents an epidemic of national concern.
This disease affects the skin of infected individuals in troubling ways, to include crawling, biting and stinging sensations, as well as bizarre fibers, threads, and black specks which are associated with the skin and/or skin lesions. The skin symptoms are only an outward clue that something is terribly wrong with the body, as the most common additional symptoms experienced by the majority of people with this disease, are profound and disabling fatigue, cognitive decline or the total inability to concentrate which is self-reported as "brain fog," severe mood and personality changes, and severe joint pain.
You can watch a video clip of a family in Florida with this infectious disease using the web address below. You will note that the entire Dill family of six is severely affected, and the Dill children are home schooled due to severe fatigue. You will also will note the father, Tom Dill's, contracted and atrophied arms, as well as his slurred speech, as he does his interview in a wheelchair. This untreated infectious disease often affects people neurologically and psychiatrically.
http://video.cbs47.com/viewer/viewe....tpl&PreloadContract_DefID=1&Contract_DefID=2
The identical response that all U.S. Senators, who have contacted the CDC on behalf of their constituents with this disease, are now receiving from the CDC has not been at all helpful to their constituents.
http://www.texramp.net/~chazman/cdc01.jpg
Our foundation has been clear from the start, in stating that the CDC must formally study this disease, and not rely solely on community physicians. Physicians, even those within university settings, are not equipped to determine the etiologic agent of this disease, nor collect adequate samples of this unknown organism. Since the CDC does not have a clinical facility, we have suggested that the NIH (National Institutes of Health) is the appropriate agency for this formal hands-on patient study.
This infectious disease is slowly disabling our nation. We feel that the alarming number of affected individuals in several states (CA, TX, FL) indicates an emerging epidemic which must be addressed by public health officials immediately.
Please contact us as soon as possible, so that we can help the families suffering from this devastating infectious disease.
