Hmmmm .... Dot perhaps?

Interesting thread about bright lights on the Syria side of the Syria-Iraq border in satellite photos. Apparently no city large enough to explain it at this location....

Maybe I'm looking at the wrong thing, but it looks like Dayr az Zawr to me, situated along the Euphrates River there. Map is at:

http://www.weatherhub.com/global/sy_map.htm

Here's a write-up I found:

Deir ez Zor (–z–) (KEY) , town (1994 est. pop. 133,000), capital of Dayr az Zawr governorate, E Syria, on the Euphrates River. It is a prosperous farming town, with cattle-breeding and an agricultural school. It is also a hub for transdesert travel and has an airport. Salt rock mines are nearby. The modern town was built by the Ottoman Empire in 1867. France occupied Dayr az Zawr in 1921 and made it the seat of a large garrison. In 1946 it became part of independent Syria. It is a cultural center and has a university. Another spelling of the town’s name is Dayr al-Zur.

Grow-lamp farms and hydroponic agribusiness? Kind of a lot of light for an agri-city. Location looks about right for your city.

If I'm not mistaken, it is an infrared photo taken at night, which measures heat, so it isn't necessarily light.

Not that this makes the matter any clearer.

Could be a huge rave in the desert! Damn kids!

Rock Salt Mining
... The geology of rock salt mines means they are often ideal for storage of petroleum
products, even archived documents, and special radioactive wastes storage ...

If I remember correctly, Iraq and Syria signed a FULL military co-operation pact.

What I am wondering is whether Syria and Iraq are engaged in 24 hour per day construction of military facilites and bunkers on the border to enable Iraq to place some of their forces on Syrian soil, somewhat out of reach of the US, which presumeably will initially restrict the war to Iraq.

The forces could be used to counter-attack US forces or for attacks on Israel.

Just 2 cents worth from my devious Canuck mind.
