Columbus, Ohio and Central Ohio vicinity:

All non-essential state, county, city employees are being sent home. Rife and Rhodes towers are being evacuated. Many schools closing early and cancelling all extracurricular activities. Police are on high alert, working 12-hour shifts. Downtown square has been cordoned off.

The Mayor of Columbus and the Governor of Ohio are asking for people to not panic.

Greyhound buses are NOT allowed out of their terminals. All cross-country travel seems to be suspended!

Did MAJOR prepping this a.m., did not notice many shoppers at stores or at the gas station, but assume that there will be soon, when people see the magnitude of the damage done in N.Y.C.

The banks here are closed. No real run on gas or food. Heard that the National Guard has been called up. I sense that the very atmosphere has changed.

    In Indianapolis ...
The schools are all on lockdown.
After school activities are mostly cancelled.
Many other meetings / activities are cancelled.
City-County Building (where courts are) is closed and evacuated.
Most Statehouse workers are being sent home.
Most all places of business are on high alert status ... employees must show ID to get in.
The governor reports that the entire state is "On Alert".

We are asked to curb phone usage... Bell South, banks are closed, Charlotte has evacuated large buildings, colleges are closing, tank farms (gas) are being patrolled. You can take your kids from school. Sheriff and governor have said "no danger" at this time!
All LEO on high alert, military bases on Delta alert. He mentioned the NG but says at this minute, they aren't called out.
I still say it ain't over...

Mall of America (the largest mall in the U.S.) is closed.

Mark your calendars well (and save the newspapers and news mags form the next few days), you have seen the beginning of the "latter days" of the U.S.

If you think air travel security was bothersome before, you ain't seen NUTTIN yet. And our borders will now be closed. For good. So much for those Mexicans trying to come over. The police-state juggernaut is awakening. In 6 months, we'll begin to see it's true effect.

More cameras. More searches. More roadblocks. Armed patrols on street corners. (I would expect major cities to look a bit like Israeli ones). There will be a "crackdown" on private ownership of firearms and ammunition. The economy is TOAST.

In 10 years, the U.S. will not resemble its current form.

    JMHO....

NJ, across the river from Philly:

I went home at lunchtime (and then came back to the office) and traffic didn't seem any different than usual. Didn't stop for gas, but didn't notice lines anywhere. I hear that the NJ Turnpike is jammed, but that must be further north, toward NYC; it looks normal down here.

But across the river in Philadelphia, I'm hearing that everything is shut down and roads are gridlocked with an early rush hour. All the historical sites - Independence Hall, Liberty Bell, etc., are not only closed but under heavy security. In addition to air travel being shut down, Amtrak has shutdown northeast corridor rail service, and traffic reports say no one can get "anywhere near" 30th Street Station.

And everyone is in shock. Here at my office, we're not closing early, but not much work is being done. People have had radios on all day, and the prez has a TV in his office. My wife went to pick up our daughter at preschool at noon as usual, and a woman was there whose daughter is an all-day student, but she just wanted to come by and see her daughter.
God answers prayers in one of two ways: "Yes," or "I have something better."

    In Houston...

Most, if not all elementary and secondary schools dismissed early.

Most downtown Houston buildings evacuated before noon. "Energy Corridor" buildings also evacuated, employees sent home before noon.

Port of Houston is open, but with heightened security.

Johnson Space Center is closed. State government buildings on heightened state of alert.

The ATM I visited 3 hours ago was dispensing only $10.00 bills. It's probably out of funds by now. Grocery stores were calm and mostly empty at 10:30 am CDT.

    Malls are closing.

    Grocery stores crowded.

    Lines at gas stations.

    Credit unions closed.

Freeways were jammed, something suspicious was found and traffic diverted.

    Sporting events cancelled.

I went out at 10:00 a.m to get cash and gas. I was the only one either place. Kids just got off the school bus as normal a few minutes ago.

I haven't had local radio on, but not much going on here.

Reports on RAL's board of some areas not taking credit cards.

Damn! This is too much like what we have talked about.

Schools weren't closed, but parents were allowed to take them home if they wanted. My dd's school spent most of the day in prayer in the chapel. Some schools in Massachusetts have closed. The FAA center here in Nashua is on alert, with no one going in or out. NG not exactly called up (yet), but stated that anyone who could come in would be helpful. Banks seem to all be open, and I haven't seen any gas lines.

Here in chicago, everything basically shut down. I am right near Ohare, my friends Hubby is the main computer network person for United Airlines. We are worried because they want him to go to the crash sites to check some things out. Schools are starting to close, water filtiration (sp) systems are heavily guarded. All the malls are closed and all tourist attractions (Lincoln Park zoo, brookfield zoo, great america etc) are also shut down.

I heard radio reports that Bush IS in the
NORAD center. When was the last time a
U.S. President had to do that???

Amtrak has suspended service in Washington
State. The closures are widening. They have
closed and are guarding the Columbia River
Dams (Grand Coulee, John Day, etc.)
This City and to a great extent, the State,
are shut down. It's normally pretty noisy
    outside. Not today.

    Nothing, really...

    Howdy, Folks!

When I first heard all of this in the a.m., went to the bank and to top off the tanks.

    Austin, Texas:

No lines @ the bank/Credit Union - one other guy there. Tellers had the TeeVee on, showing the carnage. All very blase' about it. Mentiojned to the tellers they *might* see a run over the next coupla hours/days...

Gas - Texaco on Congress and Ben White - no lines, credit card reader working okay.

Went home, called the office(still home with this damn cold). Couldn't get through; called co-workers out on the lab site. They said Central(in the CapComplex) was still populated, things working normally, just quiet.

Wife went to downtown Austin, said the streets were very quiet.

Local radio said Gov. Perry was allowing gub'mint folks to leave, should they feel like doing so.

Got everything here we need so no real reason to venture out. One not too important perscription for the wife; gonna head out now and get it. Will cast about , see what's what, check back in here(if I can get here... connection has been "kinda tight" today...).

Love and safety to you all.
    Peace and Love,

no big lines at gas stations and the grocery store i went to earlier was a ghost town...

calm before the storm, i suspect...

the disasters out east are going to reverberate across the country thru distribution and logistics problems that will become apparent very soon...

be ready for the shops shelves to be empty within a day or two...

most businesses have been closed and public events, concerts, etc...cancelled...

    hints of fema everywhere...

    Jacksonville, Florida

    Lots of closings here too.

    Also some local bomb threats.

Jeb Bush, our Governor, just gave a message to the state.
He said things should go back to normal tomorrow. (His opinion)

The airport is closed too. Planes that stopped short of their destinations here in Jax are putting their passengers on buses. Have no idea where the buses are going to take them. They just said flights may resume about noon tomorrow.

We have several military bases here in North Florida. Those bases are on high alert.

It has been said that we have well over a million ppl in our area.

    Glad we've got our preps.

Over $3 dollar a gallon gasoline in OKC.... Extremely long gas lines: at least a 30 minute wait and this is in rural Oklahoma. All Fed buildings closed. All state offices running with essential staff only.

    Metro Detroit

Airports closed. Schools let out early. Family member sent home early from a mortgage company. Chrysler has closed down all manufacturing and sent employees home. I went to the credit union and was the only one there. Headed to Aldi's for last minute stock up on more food and water. Store was not busy and you could have heard a pin drop. Everyone somber. My 85 year old Mom lives ten miles from me in Dearborn. Dearborn is the city with the largest Arab community in the whole US. In fact more Arabs here in S.E. Michigan than anywhere. Mayor Guido from Dearborn has addressed news conference that was covered nationally. They're expecting trouble but are putting on a calm front. I've tried to get Mom to leave the house but she won't. I suspect they'll shut Dearborn off soon and I won't be able to get in. I live 6 miles north of Metro Airport. I'm trying to reach my nephew who works in management there to see if he knows more about what's going on.

Just heard Ford Motor Company has closed it's World Headquarters.

Gas here was 1.98 for reg.

No gas cans left.. (thank God I stashed)
    Cash Only at gas station
    Some ATMS not working
    Some banks open some closed
    High Volume at gas station

At our local camping/hunting store business was quite brisk with everyone talking about the attack.

Ammo and camping stuff in stores were full but people were buying them.

All local military bases closed Navy school DLI presidio everything military in Monterey is closed.

Like a ghost town here.. very VERY quiet its almost strange.

Federal courts, IRS, and others closed. All civilians removed from airport, civilians cars being towed, planes moved apart & under guard. Thousands volunteering to give blood. Red Cross has set up special stations for the purpose.

    Otherwise, life goes on.

The tv stations keep rerunning a piece about how to explain the situation to your kids. Some syruppy crap about "we need to be nice, and we need to be kind..." Gimme a break! We need to find out who funded this operation and turn their country into a slab of glass!

In southwest Missouri, just got back from getting gas. Spent 2 hrs. getting fuel. One place ran out... Places north of us are rumored at 5.00 gal.
Just got a report on the news that local banks are limiting withdrawls. Where we are located is a fairly rural community....wonder what tomorrow's gonna bring?

Wanted to add, where we live, the sky is usually criss-crossed with air traffic. It's very eyrie to not see the planes

I haven't been out today, but my husband reports long lines at gas stations and and really busy grocery markets. I haven't heard or seen anything else yet.

I'm just thankful that we live in a rural area.

Oh, by the way, high school son reports that students from the ME went home early today, as their parents were worried that someone might blame them and attack their children. Very sad.

Looks like a lot of nasty people taking advantage of the situation to make a buck. On the other hand if people wouldn't panic then there wouldn't be a bigger problem. I'm sure there are going to be gas shortages but created ones by the paniced public. The gas stations in my area have large lines and long waits and lots of paniced people when the gas runs out. More won't come in any sooner than usual and people will think that means there isn't any more and the usual load will be all that is delivered and that will dissapear in a day or to into the tanks of scared people. This really brings out the essence of of the quote "the only thing we have to fear is fear itself". Gas went up here todasy also but not out of line with the other recent upticks after a slow drop in prices. Winter heating oil is on the plan and that would be all that it would take to make the price change that happened in my area today.

Word of the day. Calm down!

    whats happening

    Central Iowa:

Filled the cars between 12 and 2PM, store also. Nothing much out of the ordinary. No lines at the store or gas station. A little less traffic than normal, but everything appears as normal.

Fed buildings closed, state buildings with a little more security, Southridge Mall closed, all extra school activities cancelled.

Will report back if anything appears to change.

Seems to be pretty quiet a half hour north of Boston. People in shock. I took my son to the local community college and I went into the student ubion building. Lots of students watching the TV - a few with tears running down their cheeks.
I talked to a girl in Eastern Canada this afternoon. She said the airports up there are completely overwhelmed with int'l flights. It will take them forever to process them all.
No planes in the air here. Almost eerily quiet. What a day to be in the middle of moving!

    Iowa Security Tightened
Iowa remains on heightened alert after today's terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

The Iowa State Patrol is monitoring the Statehouse and state employees have been told the report anything suspicious. The Iowa National Guard is taking precautionary measures, while extra guards are posted at the Army's Rock Island Arsenal in the Quad Cities.

In Des Moines, the Principal Financial Group has increased security around its building at 801 Grand, the tallest skyscraper on the city's skyline.

Malls and shopping centers have been closed, including Coral Ridge Mall in Coralville and Valley West Mall and Southridge Mall in Des Moines.

Several Iowa newspapers have published special editions today, including those in Des Moines, Davenport, Cedar Rapids and Iowa City.

    Vilsack's Reaction
Governor Tom Vilsack says extra security is being added public buildings across the state. Vilsack says it's important that all Iowans stay calm.

Governor Tom Vilsack has announced a "heightened awareness" at the Statehouse and other public buildings but says state government will continue to operate Tuesday.

Speaking at a new conference in the wake of apparent terrorist attacks along the East Coast, Vilsack said he hopes the state will be able to set an example of calm and reassurance.

Two entrances to the Statehouse have been closed in the wake of the tragedies and Iowa Highway Patrol troopers are monitoring other entrances.

Vilsack says he held a telephone conference call will security officials.

He had been scheduled to fly to Washington today, but those plans were canceled and he plans to monitor the situation throughout the day.

The governor says state workers would be given broad freedom to huddle around televisions and monitor news coverage of the multiple tragedies.

The governor also says state officials will offer "support and assistance" as need to officials in New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

Governor Vilsack is urging Iowans to pray for the victims. He has ordered a heightened alert, with precautionary steps around the Statehouse and all public buildings.

The Iowa National Guard is also taking precautions at all its facilities.

    Des Moines Airport:
The FAA has grounded all U.S. flights. No planes will be taking off from the Des Moines or any other airports until further notice. All flights in the air have been told to land at the nearest airport.

Officials with the Des Moines International Airport say it will be at least 5 a.m. Wednesday before any decision will be made on when flights might resume. FAA officials say flights may resume around noon Wednesday. Extra security measures have been put in place at the Des Moines airport.

    Government Offices:
The Des Moines Federal Building has closed its offices and its daycare center. Officials will decide tomorrow morning whether to reopen. Polk County recorders office is closed but other county offices are open.

    What's happening...

Pres. Bush at Barksdale to refuel, and possibly pick up daughters that were in school in Austin and flown to BAFB. Refiners locking down, Duke Energy Gas plants locked down. Gas lines long, but prices not raised. Diesel limited from LaGloria Refining, local inventory reserved for law enforcement & EMS.
Local blood banks turning donors away, overwhelmed with donors. Some burn victims may be flown in to major burn centers in the area by military, so blood banks will reopen at 10:30pm.

[gas] You should of seen the lines at the Gas stations

Wow, you would of thought they were giving it away! At Sams they have 15 pump Islands and the shortesst line had 10 cars waiting. On the way home the 2 other gas staions I pass sort of out in the country had long lines as well.

Wasn't it former Energy Sec. Phil Richardson pre-rollover who said there isn't enough gas in the system for everyone to go top off their tanks at the same time. And if Americans did that it would be a self-fullfilling prophecy? We would run out. I just saw more people filling up then I have in my entire life!
