Months after deaths of children found hanging in Pa. home, criminal investigation still underway

    Posted Nov 21, 2019

Almost two months after a pair of Berks County children were found hanging from a leash in the basement of their home, authorities say the case remains open and under investigation.

The Allentown Morning Call reported Thursday that a “criminal investigation” is still underway as officials await test results. The Lehigh County coroner has not ruled on the cause and manner of the children’s deaths.

They died at a hospital in September, days after their mother found them hanging. She has said her son, 8, was bullied and wanted to kill himself but not “go alone." His 4-year-old sister also died.

The Morning Call writes: Authorities are considering performing a “psychological autopsy,” a rare procedure in which a psychologist and criminal profiler take an in-depth look at not only the physical causes that led to a person’s death, but interview family members and look at school, medical and criminal records for additional clues.

No charges have been filed. Police have been closed-lipped about the case.

The children’s mother, Lisa Snyder, runs a closed Facebook page about their deaths but hasn’t spoken publicly.

Police obtain 5th warrant for 2nd phone in case of sibling deaths

    October 13th 2019

Berks County — Pennsylvania State Police have obtained a fifth search warrant in their ongoing effort to uncover clues surrounding the deaths of two children found unresponsive inside their Berks County home last month.

The latest warrant seeks a second cell phone belonging to the children's mother, Lisa Snyder, who, police said, used it to call 911 on September 23, the day she reported finding her two children hanging from a cable in the basement of the family's home on Route 143 in Albany Township.

The children, 8-year-old Conner Snyder and his 4-year-old sister, Brinley, died in the hospital a few days later.

Police said they had already seized multiple electronics from the home, including a black UMX cell phone from Snyder, as part of previous search warrants. They said they weren't aware she had a second cell phone -- a Samsung Galaxy Note 9 -- until they interviewed her 17-year-old son.

"We're going to go through each piece of evidence that we have obtained and examine it thoroughly until we can get to the bottom of this," Berks County District Attorney John Adams said Friday. "We are hoping to find some answers to what happened to those two children."

Authorities said they are also awaiting results of more tests being done as part of the children's autopsies, promising to leave no stone unturned in a case that hasn't been easy for those closely involved with the investigation.

"It is really, you know, it's a difficult, emotional case for many people," Adams said, "and it's difficult for those of us who are prosecutors, the investigators. We want to get some answers, and we are going to work hard and diligently to get those answers."

The Lehigh County coroner is working closely with state police and the Berks County district attorney because the children died at Lehigh Valley Hospital near Allentown. He told 69 News earlier this week that the full autopsy lab results could take weeks.

#Breaking: The mother of a brother and sister found hanging in the basement of their Berks County home is now facing murder charges in their deaths.

    Updated 2 minutes ago

A Pennsylvania mother now faces murder charges in the deaths of her two young children found unconscious in their home more than two months ago.

On Monday, Pennsylvania State Police announced the arrest of Lisa Snyder in the killings of 8-year-old Conner Snyder and 4-year-old Brinley Snyder of Albany Township.

The brother and sister died after being found unconscious in their home. On Sept. 23, shortly after 2:30 p.m., State police received a call reporting Conner and Brinley were found by their mother unresponsive in the basement of their home on Route 143.

Medics arrived at the scene a few minutes later and found the siblings in the basement hanging about three feet apart from a single cable, according to the affidavit.

The wire was wrapped around the main support beam in the basement and each end of the wire was wrapped around the childrens' necks. Medics also found two dining room chairs that were knocked over and next to the children.

The siblings were airlifted to Lehigh Valley Hospital, Cedar Crest, where they died three days later. An initial autopsy was inconclusive. The coroner at the time said forensic testing is needed before he can rule on the cause and manner of death.

Police searched inside the home for evidence and confiscated several electronic items, including cellphones, iPads, computers and an Xbox that Conner often used, according to his mother.

Online court records list first-degree murder, third-degree murder, child endangerment and tampering with evidence charges against Snyder. It is unclear if she has an attorney who could comment on her behalf.

More details are expected to be revealed at a Monday afternoon news conference with the Berks County District Attorney's Office.

Er... not even close. I can't imagine why they are saying this is "rare"... in any death case where the facts aren't completely clear (ie; they didn't find the perps fingerprints in blood, or the suicide occurred in a locked room with no others present) the detectives *start* by doing a background check on everyone involved... including the victim.

Nothing they discover (in terms of "psychology") is admissible in court, but it can lead them to other facts and clues which make clear what actually happened.

I'll add my "not surprised" comment here... it isn't that it's unknown for young children to kill themselves, but to first kill a younger sibling is WAY out of the norm. I figured either the mother, or a boyfriend, killed them.

I believe they were hanging from the ends of the same cord, hung over a beam. If so, it would have been simultaneous.

I remember when the story was first posted here and I think 100% of the folks who replied said Mom and/or the other sibling were involved. The give away was the kids were hung on opposite ends of the same leash and as large as the boy is, it was surmised that his weight would have lifted the little girl off the ground but his feet would be on the ground.

A lot wasn't adding up and "Mom" is pure evil...

    Rotten lump:

    12/2/2019

    ALBANY TOWNSHIP, Pa. —

A Berks County woman is charged with killing her two young children, who were found hanged in their basement.

Lisa Snyder, 36, was charged Monday in the September deaths of her 8-year-old son and 4-year-old daughter. The charges include first-degree murder, third-degree murder, endangering the welfare of children, tampering with evidence and cruelty to animals.

Police said Conner Snyder and Brinley Snyder were found Sept. 23 hanging from a wire cable tied to a beam in the basement of the family's home on Route 143 near Kempton. The children died three days later at a hospital, police said.

According to court papers, Lisa Snyder told police her son had been bullied at school and talked about taking his own life. But school officials and family members who were close to the boy said he never indicated he was bullied or suicidal, court papers stated.

A criminal complaint alleged that prior to the children's deaths, Lisa Snyder searched the internet for "hanging yourself" and "carbon monoxide in a car how long to die."

A news conference about the case is planned for 2 p.m. WGAL News 8's Barbara Barr will be there and provide reports later today.

Pennsylvania mom arrested, charged with murdering her young children
Lisa Snyder was also booked on suspicion of endangering welfare of children, tampering with evidence and sexual intercourse with an animal.

    By David K. Li

Pennsylvania police on Monday arrested the mother of two young children who were found hanging 10 weeks ago, and charged her with their "horrific, tragic" murders, authorities said.

Lisa Rachelle Snyder, 36, was booked on suspicion of murder, endangering welfare of children, tampering with evidence and sexual intercourse with an animal, police and Berks County prosecutors said.

    She's being held without bail.

"This is a horrific, tragic incident," Berks County District Attorney John Adams told reporters. "We are very saddened by this incident that took place."

The children — 8-year-old Conner Snyder and 4-year-old Brinley Snyder — were found unresponsive and hanging in the basement of their Albany Township home, about 75 miles northwest of downtown Philadelphia, on Sept. 23, officials said.

Snyder had told police that Conner was suicidal because he had been bullied at school. But teachers and classmates of the youngster told the investigators that Conner was never bullied and didn't appear to be depressed, police said.

Adams said the defendant's story never added up.

"It would be safe to say that we had immediate questions," the prosecutor said. "Eight-year-olds, generally, that I am aware of, do not commit suicide, so of course we had questions."

Investigators are still trying to determine a motive for the murders.

“She had expressed to a friend that … she had had enough," Adams said. "I don’t know if there’s any explanation for her behavior at all. I don’t think I can stand up here … and explain the horrific loss of two innocent children's lives."

The ensuing investigation also uncovered evidence of animal sex, according to Adams.

"During our search of the (suspect's) Facebook Messenger, we were able uncover information and photos with her having sex with a her dog," Adams told NBC News earlier on Monday.

Snyder's attorney did not immediately returns messages seeking his comment on Monday.

The victims were found hanging from a support beam and two dining room chairs were found knocked over near the children, officials said.

The children were hanging by a vinyl dog lead that Snyder had purchased online on Sept. 22 and picked up at a nearby Walmart on Sept. 23, according to Adams.

Conner struggled with dexterity and was working with a occupational therapist, provided by the local school district, officials said.

That therapist told police there's no way Conner, who couldn't tie his own shoelaces, would have been able to tie the nooses found around his and his sister's necks, according to Adams.

And in the days leading up Sept. 23, Snyder did Google searches for "carbon monoxide in a car, how long to die," "hanging yourself, "short drop, simple suspension" and "does a hybrid car produce carbon monoxide."

"The autopsies ... determined the cause of death for both children was hanging," Adams said. "The Lehigh County coroner has ruled these deaths as homicide."

A 17-year-old boy also lived in the house but he was not involved with the crime, Adams added. The father of the children did not live with the family.

The teenager is now staying with other family and the victimized dog had already been given away to a Facebook friend of the suspect's before Monday's arrest, Pennsylvania State Police Trooper David Beohm said.

Reading this horror story makes me want to ask, Why wasn't this woman spayed at puberty?
8 year olds, if they have suicidal thoughts do they act out on them with hanging themselves? I remember being 8 and being kind of fuzzy on the whole concept of death, let alone doing it with a noose. And taking someone with you, that just boggles the mind. The internet searches are mom's, not the kids. Too complex for an 8 year old.

And mommy is banging the family pet???? As sleazy as she seems to be, she could have cruised the local truck stop and took care of that particular itch. But the family dog? Where does one come up with ideas like this? Yuk!

Put her in the town square and give every citizen a good sized stone to throw at her. Remove her from the gene pool.

Witnesses who knew the boy said he was not being bullied and in fact was happy.
Video from the school bus also supports to fact of him not being bullied and in fact showed him happy.

Berks County DA: Mother Hanged 8-Year-Old Son, 4-Year-Old Daughter With Dog Cable In Basement Of Home

By CBS3 StaffDecember 2, 2019 at 4:45 pmFiled Under:Berks County News, Local, Local TV

ALBANY TOWNSHIP, Pa. (CBS) — The Berks County district attorney says a mother hanged her 8-year-old son and 4-year-old daughter with a dog cable in the basement of their Berks County home. District Attorney John Adams says Lisa Snyder has been charged with first-degree murder and other related offenses in the deaths of Conner and Brinley Snyder.
She is also accused of having sex with a dog.

Conner and Brinley were found hanging from a dog cable in the basement of their Albany Township home on Sept. 23 after their mother called 911. The young children were in full cardiac arrest when first responders arrived and were resuscitated, however, they died three days later.
The coroner said the children died by hanging and ruled their deaths homicides.
Adams says Snyder ordered a dog cable a day before her children were hanged and picked it up from a local Walmart. He says Snyder also searched on Google “carbon monoxide in a car,” “Almost Got Away With It best episodes,” and “hanging yourself.”
“This is a horrific, tragic incident that has received a lot of attention in our community and we are very saddened by this incident that took place in Albany Township,” Adams said.
Authorities say Snyder told police that Conner was being bullied at school and wanted to die, but witnesses say the young boy was not bullied and didn’t complain about it. Police also gathered video from the school bus that brought Conner home.
“The video showed no signs that Conner was in any distress whatsoever. In the video, he appeared to be a happy child,” Adams said.
Adams said a friend told police that Snyder told her she had enough.
Facebook Messenger conversations obtained in the search warrant allegedly showed Snyder talking about a dog performing sex acts on her.
“This was an emotional investigation for all involved,” Adams said.
Adams added that the children were removed from Snyder’s care in 2014 and were returned to her in 2015. Children services had been involved with the Snyder family until November 2015.
Prosecutors have not made a determination yet if they will seek the death penalty against Snyder.
“I never saw a wild thing sorry for itself. A small bird will drop frozen dead from a bough without ever having felt sorry for itself.”
