Iraq closes southern border with Iran to travelers: security source, diplomat
    1 MIN READ

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraq closed its southern Shalamcheh border crossing with Iran to travelers from both countries on Saturday, an Iraqi security source and an Iranian diplomat said.

The security source said Tehran had demanded the closure because of ongoing public protests in both Iran and Iraq. The border would remain shut until further notice but would not affect goods or trade, the security source and the diplomat said.

Good it's about time they threw out the Ayatollahs, the average Iranian does not want to be ruled by Islam but there is no effective or organised Western Style Democratic movement.

Maybe bring back the Shah initially then move towards the establishment of democratic institutions.

Iran petrol price hike: Supreme Leader condemns 'hooligan' protesters
    17 November 2019 Middle East

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has said he supports a fuel price rise that has sparked protests across the country.

The Ayatollah blamed "hooligans" and counter-revolutionaries for violence that has been witnessed in several cities.

At least one person is confirmed dead in clashes with police but reports suggest the number could be higher.

Officials have warned of a tougher response if "illegal" actions continue.

Protests erupted on Friday after the government unexpectedly announced it was rationing petrol and removing subsidies - sending prices up by 50%.

The measures are the latest sign of pressure on the Iranian economy after the re-imposition of US sanctions. The government says the changes will free up money to help the poor.

    What's the official reaction?
In a statement on Sunday, Ayatollah Khamenei acknowledged that some people were "no doubt worried" by the decision to increase fuel prices.

"But sabotage and arson is done by hooligans not our people," he said, quoted by state TV.

How renewed US sanctions have hit Iran hard
Iran's network of influence in Mid-East 'growing'
"The counter-revolution and Iran's enemies have always supported sabotage and breaches of security and continue to do so."

Image copyrightEPAIranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei speaks during a ceremony in Tehran, Iran, 17 November 2019
Image captionAyatollah Ali Khamenei said the decision on fuel prices was made by experts and had to be implemented
Following his comments a group of MPs withdrew a motion aimed at reversing the fuel-price increase, Iranian media reported.

Iran's state-run TV has accused "hostile media" of trying to exaggerate the scale of the unrest. Footage of protests has been widely distributed on social media.

What's the situation on the ground?
Internet monitoring service Netblocks said late on Saturday that Iran was experiencing a near-total national internet shutdown.

The move was condemned by US State Department spokeswoman Morgan Ortagus who tweeted: "We condemn the attempted shutdown of the internet. Let them speak!"

Prosecutors quoted by the semi-official Isna news agency on Sunday said 40 people were arrested in the central city of Yazd, most of whom were not local residents.

Protesters took the streets across Iran as fuel price rises were introduced
Video captionProtesters took the streets across Iran as fuel price rises were introduced
Some shops in Tehran's bazaar were shut on Sunday following "disruption" caused by people outside, Isna added without elaborating.

Some of the worst unrest has been reported in the central city of Sirjan where at least one person was killed during protests on Friday.

Demonstrations were reported on Saturday in the cities of Doroud, Garmsar, Gorgan, Ilam, Karaj, Khoramabad, Mehdishahr, Qazvin, Qom, Sanandaj, Shahroud and Shiraz, state media reported.

Video purportedly from the demonstrations showed cars set on fire and roads deliberately blocked by abandoned vehicles. Crowds were heard chanting for the police to support them and for others to join the protests.

    What's the background?
Under the new fuel measures, each motorist is allowed to buy 60 litres (13 gallons) of petrol a month at 15,000 rials ($0.13; £0.10) a litre. Each additional litre then costs 30,000 rials.

Previously, drivers were allowed up to 250 litres at 10,000 rials per litre, AP reports.

Feeling the squeeze: Iran sanctions explained
Video captionFeeling the squeeze: Iran sanctions explained
Revenue gained from removing subsidies on petrol will be used for cash payments to low-income households, the government says.

US sanctions were re-imposed last year after President Donald Trump abandoned the landmark nuclear deal between Iran and six world powers.

The sanctions have led to a sharp downturn in Iran's economy, pushing the value of its currency to record lows, quadrupling its annual inflation rate, driving away foreign investors and triggering protests.

I have no idea how this will go, but Iran today (as it was in 1979) is the sort of place you can expect a revolution if people get mad enough.

It has a large and fairly well educated young population that can read, write and go online and who in general haven't liked the Central Government very much for the last 20 years, so you have both the younger "generation" of millennials and their parents (in their 40s) who are likely to be unhappy with the status quo.

The French Revolution was during a similar period of rising expectations and education vs. a tone-deaf elite that kept pretending everything was just fine while bread prices (the staple food) soured to the point that things boiled over.

It is more complicated than that but very similar - the hike in gasoline prices has a knock-on effect for people living on the edge and/or angry already.

Most of the grandparents who are not part of the special "elites" know that the 1979 revolution backfired in terms of their personal lives and freedoms, even the sincerely religious are often very unhappy with corrupted "religious police" and extreme censorship of their daily lives and those of their kids and grandkids.

That doesn't mean this revolution will succeed but I have actually been surprised that it took this long to break out, but it might work though it may result in another failed country in a state of near-permanent civil-war like Iraq, Libya, Afganistan or Syria.

Well, looks like we've implemented another "revolution" in the 3rd world. The Neocons will have their war soon enough. This will get the Pakis very nervous. In the past, if there was war with India they had a some what stable Western front, now? They will have a combination of Libya/Iraq/Syria failed state. This is not good at all for the Indian - Pakistan conflict threat. It will be good for Israel though and might stop the Iranian influence with groups to the West of Iran.

On the other hand, a destabilized Iran might just go full Islamic retard and attack Israel somehow, which in turn, will solve most of the mid-east problems once and for all. Cowboys and Indians on all fronts and we know who wins that scenario, Israel.

Iran has had an evil Islamic Government ever since the overthrow of the Shah not just the past 20 years. I'm not saying the Shah was some model leader but the Ayatollahs were and are far worse. This is not a socialist "revolution" but a call for a modern secular democracy. You could compare it to the fall of Communism which fortunately happened peaceably.

The French Revolution led to 40.000 murders, the Russian revolution 30-65 millions, so we don't want that happening agin in Iran but the Mullahs have to be overthrown.

Yeah, there is some information and video coming out on Twitter (not much but some) and this seriously looks like it could be a real game-changer.

It remains to be seen how much blood the government plus Revolutionary Guards/Regular military is willing to spill, even religious fanatism only goes so far and a lot of people in Iran are weary of it.

Certainly seems the best to hope for outcome. I don't envy them the process of watching it shake out up close and personal. Remember too, we're still at that mercury retrograde period and any change is likely to be either temporary or a revisiting of previous ones. Thus i hope the game changing measures hold off till they can find solid purchase...
Thoughts are things. Thus I'm careful of the thoughts I think, & the company I keep.

Religious fanaticism has ruled Iran since 1979 even though the population have been sick of it for years. Religious fanaticism has ruled the ME since the 7th Century.

There was a window of opportunity during O adminstration. If Trump wastes it this time, there there is NO SUCH THING as a conspiracy, any longer.

God, I hope if they Ayatollah are thrown out on their asses, that they Do Not bring the Pahlavi's back!

They will bring with them Savak.

And I now of first hand eyewitnesses to atrocities done by the family at the palace.

I mean, like a family time of gathering around to watch someone caught on fire, etc.

So many things that can't even be told on the internet.

And so much disinformation even back to the 50's about the Tudeh trying overthrow the Shah.

I will tell you this truth though, Mossadegh was Only Using the Tudeh and then if he got into power, he was going to get rid of them.

They were an means to a favorable end and he was Not communist in anyway. H\

He told my parents this straight out after the revolt happened.

There was found an execution list the Tudeh had that had the names of 17 people on it, many were from the US Embassy and both my parents were on that list.

But again, in no way do they need the Shah's family to come back in power.

    Ever. V

If people ever knew how many Christian and Jewish Iranians who are just waiting for change!

They have to keep a low profile and even fake being muslim as they don't get killed. V
