Minnesota Town Hikes Taxes to Deal with Mass Immigration Overwhelming Local Schools

13,000 residents just agreed to a 34 million dollar tax increase...

Taxpayers in the small town of Worthington, Minnesota hiked taxes to fund an expansion of their school district, since mass immigration has overwhelmed teachers, resources, and classrooms.

This week, Worthington taxpayers voted to approve an additional nearly $34 million in funds to expand the local school district, which has ballooned in class enrollment due to a massive influx of unchecked migration.

For years, Worthington taxpayers had repeatedly rejected providing more tax dollars to the school district — voting down the initiative five times. This time around, there was a major push from immigrant rights organizations to turn out the vote to get more funding.

The story of this small 13,000-resident community in middle America is the latest example of mass immigration’s direct impact on school districts, quality of life issues, and the rights of residents to have a say over the issue.

As Breitbart News reported, mass immigration to Worthington has driven the school district to the brink with a constant flow of Unaccompanied Alien Children (UAC) arriving in the region and newly arrived immigrants sending their children to the region’s schools as they take jobs at the nearby JBS Pork slaughterhouse.

Over the last six years, Worthington has had to absorb more than 400 UACs, who arrived at the nation’s borders primarily from Central America and were resettled in the area.

Projections from an April report by analyst Steven Kopits revealed that by the November 2020 presidential election, nearly one million migrant children may arrive in the U.S. — roughly 800,000 of whom would need to be accommodated by local school districts.

Dumb sh*ts. Send the bill to the NGO that sponsored these invaders. Catholic Services (I don't know what they're called), UCC (nothing to do with Christ) or others. Send them the bills, sue them, beat them smartly about the head and shoulders until they pay for their crimes! For crying out loud, quit playing nice with these idiots!!

This is the Demonrats solution to fly over country. Flood the with illegals living off our tax dollars. They will be allowed to vote. No more red states. Soon they will have a lock on the voting base.

The right just sits and watches. The Republican Party will be a heard only in history books in the near future.

That's about right. Not enough locals, so the immigrants ( illegal or otherwise ) flood in and the nearest town changes ... usually for the worse.

Sounds like a mass raid by ICE would save everybody a lot of money and trouble.

Those are good jobs...no reason why legal Americans can't fill them.

Somehow I dont think that happened. Nobody in the USA would vote for that kinda thing and the amounts that would have to be paid.

It averages out to be a little over 200 bucks per resident . And it sounds like it was the rising "immigrant" population who finally forced the citizens to have to pay.

More like they are putting your money where their mouths are if you are unfortunate enough to live there. No way would I have voted for that kind of a tax increase. If the State wants to let them in then the State can find a way to pay for it.

I am not sure there will be many changes to school funding unless or until (and more likely until) the local public schools simply start closing down from lack of funding.

One of the real problems in the US is that schools usually depend largely on local-tax payer funding with some from other sources but those sources tend to lock the schools into "programs" like Common Core no matter what the parents or the teachers (or even the school board) may want.

But because humans tend to live near "humans like us" especially economically, it means that one district may be overflowing with funds for the band, the drama department and school trips; and the one next door is where the teachers have 40 plus kids in one class, have to use their own salaries to buy pencils and old bathrooms double as classrooms.

Attempts to "solve" this can result in what was going on in Berkeley when I lived there (not sure if it still is) where for the first three years all the kids went to the "good" school in the "hills."

That school (at the time) was about 50/50 black/white-rich/poor.

In the 4th grade, when "all" the kids were supposed to go that horrific dump in the middle of the ghetto that I mentioned in my last post (the one that has the garden and kitchen but is or at least otherwise was a terrible place) well - you guessed it: any parent that could black or white sent their kids to a private school.

Result 4th through 6th grade (more or less) 90 percent poor-African American and Hispanic students - always a few white students (some of my friends couldn't afford private schools or to move out of the area) but by and large this was the case.

What that shows is that when education standards are good and there is enough money put into a school to make it a bright, happy, place of play and learning then educated and even wealthy parents may be happy to let their kids go there even if some of their classmates are poor and not as advantaged.

But turn around and try to send the exact same bunch of kids essentially to "the other side of the tracks" to a dark, dismal, dirty, failing school and those same parents pull their kids out and will turn down any tax increase they can.

Meanwhile, the poor parents tend not to pay enough (if any taxes) to matter; you always get a few parents (often single Moms) who volunteer and try to do their best, often to try and get their kids from repeating their own life situations but by and large the schools just turn into holding pens for children and teenagers.

I don't have a lot of good solutions, I've seen over the years how not to do it (starting with Mississippi in the 1970s) but how to do it and fund it isn't as obvious.

Meanwhile, anyone who can homeschool its a good idea; and if you can't then "unschooling" on the weekends and evenings is the next best plan.

No, IF that number ($200)) is what they told the VOTERS, THEY LIED. (Unless they revealed that to be a MONTHLY $218 tax increase!)

13,000 property owners x $200 = only TWO Million six hundred thousand,, NOT 34 MILLION!

$34 MILLION /13,000=Wll ACTUALLY cost them a $2,615.39 RAISE in their yearly property tax bill OVER what they ALREADY PAY in property tax!

So, Home RENTERS can look forward to a $2615/12= $217.92+ RAISE in monthly Rent, also!

Now, the farmers wll start losing homes to Tax foreclosures, the invaders will buy their property Cheap, and the PIG PLANT WILL CLOSE!

The road TO HELL was paved with the best intentions.

Want a NEW LIFE, to be "born again?" Your acceptance of Jesus's death for you, by proxy, on the Cross must include your understanding, consenting/ratifying that YOU AGREE that means YOU, your will, your way died. When you do, then you become "born again", a new creation, filled with His Holy Spirit, Jesus and his eternal life will dwell within you as his temple. He died for all, but not all will RATIFY His sacrifice for them.

Chicken and pig processing areas, too - and, add in produce-pickers/packers and residential/commercial building-boom areas.

Take away the economic incentives, including the town's folks insane willingness to pay the illegal's freight via higher taxes, and this problem will dry up, quickly.

Reviewed the annual budget for Fairfax County, VA well over a decade ago - a HUGE disproportional amount of the annual county budget had been allocated to their public school system.

Digging deeper into these numbers, and a few well-placed calls to various Fairfax County Board of Supervisors and their bureaucratic minions, later, showed that a large amount of those allocated public school funds were underwriting a vast but purposefully hidden illegal invader hispanic population, already settled deeply into the heart of one of the wealthiest zip-codes in our nation.

None of this happened by accident.

It has ALWAYS been planned as such, and quietly executed - continuing onward/forward to this very day throughout several CONUS jurisdictions, despite the occasional noisy J6P protestations to the contrary.

WHO are the puppet-masters in all of this? Why do our elected politicos continue to ignore this problem? <rhetorical question, for most thinking folks>

There is no REAL Democrat or Republican parties - that is pure fantasy to placate the inattentive masses.

There is ONLY the UniParty®, and they work HARD, every day, using taxpayers-supplied dollars, to steal the birthrights of every J6P American citizen.

Unskilled Jobs Draw Migrants, Changing Face Of Small Towns Across America

It is the 8 a.m. assembly at Cactus Elementary School, located on the bleak plains of the Texas Panhandle. Kids with colorful backpacks and sleepy eyes sit cross-legged on the gym floor while their principal kick-starts the day: "Good morning, Cactus Elementary!" The students crow in response.

Many of them come from poor villages in faraway lands — Central America, Somalia, Myanmar, Congo, Haiti — and they're clearly thrilled to be in school.

Principal T.J. Funderburg welcomes them all. "We need a world map to map where everybody comes from," he intones in the microphone. "But we're all here."

Over the past year, student enrollment at Cactus Elementary has surged from 300 to 400 children. The majority of new students are from Guatemala. They are part of a historic wave of more than half a million Central American parents and children who crossed the southern border, fleeing violence and poverty and asking for protection. After they were taken into custody and released to await their day in immigration court, many headed to the heartland where unskilled jobs are plentiful.

Cactus, Texas, is one of the places where America's newest immigrants are coming, and their presence has had a profound effect on the elementary school.

"What we found is the students that come in from Guatemala and Africa, they may have had some education," Funderburg says. "In Guatemala, they don't start first grade until 8 or 9 years old. And so we've really had to rethink the way that we do everything."

For instance, they need more English language teachers and they have fewer pop quizzes for the students who need lots of remedial help. The school also simply needs more space.

On Tuesday, voters will decide on a $107 million bond project for Dumas Independent School District, to which Cactus belongs. It includes a brand-new elementary school for Cactus, in part to accommodate all the recent immigrant children. The bond package is expected to pass.

"The elementary school is a center of pride in this community, a kind of jewel," Funderburg says proudly.

One might expect locals to oppose a tax increase to educate migrant kids born thousands of miles away. After all, this is Donald Trump country — he won Moore County by 75%. The president wants fewer low-skilled immigrants like these, who he says compete with Americans for jobs and drive down wages.

But Trump's anti-immigrant rhetoric clashes with economic reality out here in the hardworking Panhandle.

Most of the 3,200 residents of Cactus work at the massive JBS Cactus Beef Plant, located across the highway from the elementary school. It's one of the largest meat processing plants in the nation. Cattle trucks arrive all day and all night; refrigerated trailers depart carrying ribeyes, fajitas and hamburger. The 3,000-plus workforce is overwhelmingly immigrant. The town of aging mobile homes even has its own mosque and halal meat market.

The meatpacker is a magnet for immigrants because of its pay scale as well as the language classes, medical benefits and subsidized housing the company offers. And with a turnover rate of 70%, it is always hiring.

JBS also pays application fees for certain employees seeking U.S. citizenship. On this night, a handful of current and former employees have come to the nearby Cactus Nazarene Ministry Center to prep for the naturalization exam.

"Question No. 9: George Washington was a general in the Vietnam War," says a volunteer instructor. "Nope. Which war?" The students look through their papers for the correct answer.

    "The Revolutionary War!"

Workers on the "kill floor" make $15-$20 an hour. The chain moves fast — a single cutter may process 100 carcasses an hour. In a single eight-hour shift, three workers will butcher 2,500 animals.

"It's hard, and it's also dangerous," says Sylvia Hernandez, a U.S. resident from Chihuahua, Mexico, who has worked at JBS for 10 years and is studying for the citizenship test. "The kill floor is covered with blood, suet, fat, water."

In 2006, Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents raided the plant, then owned by Swift & Co., and arrested 300 unauthorized workers. The plant, now owned by JBS — the Brazilian multinational meat processor — says it carefully vets applicants to ensure a legal workforce.

"Historically, first-generation Americans, asylees and refugees have viewed our jobs as unique opportunities to pursue the American dream and provide a better future for their families," JBS says in an emailed statement.

"If I'm a U.S. citizen and I speak English," Hernandez continues, "I'm not going to work there. I'll look for a better opportunity. It's the people who don't speak English who go to work at JBS."

But it's not just the beef plant that attracts immigrants to Moore County, where Cactus is located.

"There's lots of work all over, not just in the plant," says Rodrigo Gallegos, a 20-year JBS employee — "in the feedlots, the ranches, the dairies. There's all kinds of work for people who don't have papers, and for people who have papers."

The unlimited availability of work for non-English speakers who are willing to do hard jobs has changed the character of Moore County, which used to be majority white. Today, it is 80% nonwhite. Bill Knight runs the local Greyhound station and serves as the GOP chairman. While the immigrant workforce is good for selling bus tickets, he says, the fact that some foreign-born workers don't assimilate rubs some old-timers the wrong way.

Moore County Judge Rowdy Rhoades says his county is more multicultural and tolerant than it used to be.
    John Burnett/NPR
"The Anglo, let's say, feels like they're not welcome in those Spanish stores because [store employees] are accustomed to speaking to the Spanish in Spanish, and not speakin' to us in English," Knight says.

But Moore County Judge Rowdy Rhoades says they've come a long way from the days when the county seat of Dumas was raw and racist.

"That was our culture," he says. "I know back in the '50s, they had a sign that said, 'Blacks don't let the sun set on you in Dumas, Texas.' "

The huge beef plant has been a magnet for immigrant workers for decades, and most folks have adapted to the diverse population that is now a permanent feature of Moore County, Rhoades says.

"So our world has turned around," he says from his office inside the art deco courthouse.

Rhoades compares learning tolerance to putting on weight.

"You know what, it's kinda like gettin' fat. You don't get fat all at once. You put weight on a little at a time. So you adjust, you change your clothes, you go up a size or two. You notice it, but you adapt."

After all, Rhoades says, if you like steak it's got to come from somewhere.

Our county solved the problem of jobs attracting illegals by not having any jobs. Works for me and this county has way less than 5% hispanics
