    Please Define "Dup"

As to this forum what do we mean by "dupe" or "dup"? I thought I once knew but not sure now.

    Thanks!

Sure is nice that everyone answered his question. Disciple, on this forum it means someone posted the same subject mater not long before.

Definition of "dup" can be found in the department of redundancy department.

Disciple has been here SIXTEEN YEARS. He/she damn well knows what a dup is.

I am sorry to laugh. Yes the term means duplicated, and generally refers to posting a thread thats already posted.

The rule is to use an articles exact title, so that search will bring up duplicates. However, that is enforced in a hit and miss manner, leading to this problem.

We didn't mean to be rude, it just seems to be one of those days where everything seems funny.
....or oerhaps, one of those laugh so you don't cry kind of days.

    Hope this helps.

I understand it to mean either the exact same story from the same source, or the essentially same story posted from a different source, or perhaps the same subject from anywhere but essentially conferring the same information.
    More or less.

FWIW... it's entirely possible and easy, as you get older, for certain words, etc, to suddenly look as if they're in a foreign language. I think disciple might be a slightly older gentleman (my apologies if I've misgendered you!), and as funny as some of the responses are, I'd suggest that it wouldn't have been that hard to answer the question before enjoying the humor.

I may be using the term in error.

When I type up a reply to a post, I click on “Post Quick Reply.” Sometimes my iPad doesn’t do anything so I wait, and wait, and then hit “Post Quick Reply” again. I usually try to wait 30 seconds or more. Then I’ll finally see my post on the thread. Twice.

So I go into one of them, backspace through it all to erase, then type Dup or Dupe. Then try to post that. Sometimes I end up with two of those as well.

I’ve noticed it happening more frequently in the last few months. And it’s not only me.

Should I use a different word than “dupe” or “dup?”

I figured out "dup" right after I joined TB. What I've never figured out is why none of the language sticklers on this forum don't insist that it be spelled "dupe", as dup would normally be pronounced so that it rhymes with "pup" rather than "poop".

Maybe expecting "normal" here is where I'm going wrong? (:

Dup is actually short for “duplicate”, thus the spelling, while incorrect English, is a correct abbreviation.
