Pelosi leads congressional delegation in Jordan, Afghanistan visits

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi led a group of U.S. lawmakers on a surprise visit to Jordan to discuss "the deepening crisis" in Syria amid a shaky U.S.-brokered cease-fire.

The visit came as critics from both parties in Washington have slammed President Donald Trump for his decision to withdraw the bulk of U.S. troops from northern Syria — clearing the way for Turkey's wide-ranging offensive against the Kurdish groups, who had been key U.S. allies in the fight against ISIS.

Turkey agreed on Thursday to suspend its offensive for five days, demanding that the Kurdish forces withdraw from a designated strip of the border about 20 miles.

Pelosi, D-Calif., along with the nine-member congressional delegation, met with Jordan's King Abdullah II in Amman, the capital, late on Saturday for talks focusing on security and "regional stability," according to a statement from her office.

Jordan, a key U.S. ally in the region, has been greatly affected by the eight-year civil war in neighboring Syria. Jordanian officials say the kingdom hosts about 1 million Syrians who have fled the fighting.

"With the deepening crisis in Syria after Turkey's incursion, our delegation has engaged in vital discussions about the impact to regional stability, increased flow of refugees, and the dangerous opening that has been provided to ISIS, Iran and Russia," the statement said.

Jordan's state news agency, Petra, said Abdullah stressed the importance of safeguarding Syria's territorial integrity and guarantees for the "safe and voluntary" return of refugees.

"The meeting also covered regional and international efforts to counter terrorism within a comprehensive approach," the agency said.

Pelosi's office said on Sunday night that the delegation moved on to Afghanistan to meet with top Afghan leaders, civil representatives and U.S. military leaders and troops serving there. he trip, which also wasn't made public in advance, briefly overlapped with one by Defense Secretary Mark Esper.

The delegation included Democrats Adam Schiff of California, chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, who is leading the impeachment probe into President Donald Trump; Eliot Engel of New York, chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee; and Bennie Thomspon of Mississippi, chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee. One Republican joined the group, Rep. Mac Thornberry of Texas, the top Republican on the House Armed Services Committee.

What a target rich group for some not reformed jihadi.....

    Just an observation, ya know....

You know damn well she went there to blast Trump for pulling out of Syria but that will probably never be reported. Besides, her authority in the House does not extend beyond the House. She may have committed high treason.

Always question why Congress Critters go over seas on "fact finding tours". Even more when they have meetings with leaders of other countries.

Jefferson said- “The transaction of business with foreign nations is executive altogether. It belongs, then, to the head of that department, except as to such portions of it as are specially submitted to the Senate."

Just as John Kerry violated the Logan Act after he wasn't Sect. of State by working with foreign diplomates trying to work around Trump's voiding Obama's Iranian Give Away Treaty, one has to wonder just how illegal congress critters are when they meet behind closed doors with foreign government officials.

When any congress critter enters into any form of negotiations with a foreign government official under the assumption they represent the USA, they have exceeded their constitutional authority.

She really believes her position is higher than Pres. Trump. She acts like a petulant child and is a danger to our country and should be removed. How can we make that happen? There should be an amendment 25 for Congress.

In a sane and just world, the Secret Service should be waiting with handcuffs, black Suburbans, and copies of Miranda warnings. Right on the tarmac. Federal marshalls with weapons cocked and locked for enforcement of the arrests. This is bullshit. Utter and unmitigated bullshit.

They have no oversight role in the Middle East. Their only possible motive is to meddle at best, sabotage at worst.

ETA: And I would only arrest Democrats, unless a Republican there was an obvious traitor. If the Demons complain, it would just be explained that the non-arrested Republicans were there to observe the Demon treason, and were authorized to make the trip under that aegis. If it's true, great. If it's not true, the Republicans spared would owe the administration, and the American people that support it, a massive debt. If they refuse to acknowledge this debt, their guilt in this treasonous trip would be obvious, and they would be likewise arrested.

And held without bail. They just flew halfway around the world to commit their crimes, they're an obvious flight risk.

did they use commercial air or .mil? If .mil just order the flight to land at Gitmo, if commercial have them stop at Gitmo to restock the bar. Plane comes to US with only crew either case. Any resistance the offender gets to immediately start swimming home.
