Rebuilding search index now - COMPLETE, post #42 - CHECK FOR MISSING POSTS

I just started rebuilding the search index after telling my PC not to go to sleep if plugged in. I think that killed the rebuild effort from a couple days ago. We'll see. I have no idea how long this will take to actually complete, but yeeehaaawwww....

  2. #2
Thanks, Dennis. Don't do without sleep just to hurry this done for us. I might like to grumble occasionally, but I sure don't expect you to be superhuman.

It’s automatic - unless the computer goes to sleep...

Nothing sucks worse than when your computer goes to sleep during a critical process, for me itís when Iím rendering video.

Remember - if this doesn’t work, we’ll have to do a restore from a week ago.

It looks like we’re rebuilding about one year per hour. That means that this would take about 20 hours overall. Fingers crossed.

Thanks Dennis. I'll add my crossed fingers, too.

As I said in another thread, assuming this completes properly, search should work perfectly WITHIN THE BOUNDS OF ITS CAPABILITIES.

What I mean by that is the vBulletin search software from the era of this version couldn't do "natural language" search. That is, you couldn't search for something like "Methodists riot in Times Square". You COULD search for term1 AND term2 AND term3, where the AND is mandatory.

The Xenforo software has a cost-plus plugin (which I bought) that will allow natural language search.

Right now I would be happy with a functional old style search feature...there was a movie mentioned years ago, and I want to watch it right. This. Minute! Whatever it was ll :: sigh::

Oh, and it IS functional right this minute - for this evening and from 2001 to about 2003.

Hey. You might have stumbled upon one of the movies I could not think of- well done!

I think this might explain the headache from Hell I’ve had today... okay it really explains my idiot of an iMac and quick time... sigh.

At this point I’d rather be dealing with a server issue.

It looks like the rebuild is up to mid-2006. My “find my posts” shows entries, so things are evidently progressing. I’m not getting out of bed to make sure we’re running though. The “one year per hour” rate seems to be holding. Remember that we run with SSD drives. I hate to think how long it would take using spinning media, which is 10x slower.

We may have died again (at 2008 this time). The rebuild function allows me to limit to a range of index dates. If I have to start again (likely), I'll limit it to 500,000 at a time. I had reached that point by bedtime last night, so I know it can get that far.

Well, hush my puppies, it's actually been running all day, and we're up to post 4,275,000 out of 7,440,000. The post index is complete up to 2012.

I often start copying and pasting threads that I find informative and quit halfway in...

Can you imagine the vast amount of knowledge and information on this board with 20 years of posts? I wish it could all be printed out and cataloged ( no, I'm not volunteering just making an observation )...

The data could be made available - but you’d have to write an interface. That wouldn’t be much fun.

For me, the critical issue was, did we still have all our posts? With the master search index dead, we had no way of knowing. That’s why getting it rebuilt was so vital.

Theoretically it should finish at about 3 am. Then I have a few more small indices to rebuild, then everyone can test it out.

Glad you brought this up. All of you "heavy lifters" who cover subjects in such depth, should ( i think, my opinion only, im nobody, I don't matter etc) give thought to how you might tag, index, present a cover page, or whatever might be done to make your "works" the most accessible.

I truly believe this Might be the source material for the historians of the next century (assuming we can still read and write 100 years from now!). I know for a fact that there is a rich resource on a number of subjects, and I've turned to it time and time again
