Iran launches surprise drill near Turkey border

Beirut, Oct 9 (AP) - Iranian state television says the Islamic Republic has launched a surprise military drill with army special operations forces near the country''s border with Turkey.

The exercise comes amid Iran''s opposition to Turkey''s planned invasion of northern Syria against Syrian Kurdish fighters there. The Syrian Kurds were US allies in the war against the Islamic State group.

The sudden Iranian drill was announced on Wednesday. The TV report says it''s overseen by Major General Abdolrahim Mousavi, chief of Iran''s army.

However, the state TV didn''t mention the expected Turkish operation nor elaborate on the number of troops taking part in the drill in Qushchi in Iran''s Western Azerbaijan province. The area is about 620 kilometers, or 385 miles, northwest of Tehran.

Iran and Russia are both key allies of Syrian President Bashar Assad''s long-embattled government. Both have troops on the ground in Syria.

While they may publicly oppose a Turkish incursion into Syria, they probably don''t mind an operation that diminishes the Kurdish forces.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov is accusing the United States of playing "very dangerous games" with the Syrian Kurds, whose fighters were top US allies in the war against the Islamic State group in Syria.

Lavrov said during a visit to Kazakhstan on Wednesday that the US first propped up the Syrian Kurdish "quasi state" in northeastern Syria and is now withdrawing its support.

He says that "such reckless attitude to this highly sensitive subject can set fire to the entire region, and we have to avoid it at any cost."

Russian news agencies carried Lavrov''s comments and reported that Moscow has communicated that position Washington.

Lavrov didn''t directly address the issue of Turkey''s anticipated invasion into northeastern Syria but said that Moscow is encouraging the Kurds and the Syrian government to settle their difference through talks.

The top Russian diplomat stressed that both Damascus and the Syrian Kurds have said they are "open to dialogue, and we will do our best to help launch talks on this subject."

The Kurdish-led civilian administration in northeastern Syria has issued a "general mobilization" call along the border with Turkey, as Ankara masses troops ahead of an imminent invasion.

The local authority, known as the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria, says: "We call upon our people, of all ethnic groups, to move toward areas close to the border with Turkey to carry out acts of resistance during this sensitive historical time."

It also called on the international community to live up to its responsibilities as "a humanitarian catastrophe might befall our people" in northeastern Syria.

Turkey has been preparing for an attack on the Kurdish fighters in Syria whom Ankara considers terrorists allied with a Kurdish insurgency within Turkey.

President Donald Trump on Sunday abruptly announced American troops would step aside ahead of eth Turkish push — a shift in US policy that essentially abandoned the Syrian Kurds, longtime US allies in the fight against the Islamic State group.

A top Turkish official says Turkey''s military will "shortly" cross into Syria together with allied Syrian rebel forces after President Donald Trump announced US troops would withdraw from the area.

Fahrettin Altun, the Turkish presidency''s communications director, called on the international community in a Washington Post op-ed on Wednesday "to rally" behind Ankara.

Altun says Turkey seeks to "neutralise" Syrian Kurdish fighters in northeastern Syria and to "liberate the local population from the yoke of the armed thugs."

He wrote: "The Turkish military, together with the Free Syrian Army, will cross the Turkish-Syrian border shortly."

Turkey considers the Syrian Kurdish fighters, allied with American forces in the fight against IS, as terrorists linked to outlawed Kurdish rebels within Turkey.

Ragnarok, we are now in the general military mobilization phase, just like World War One. Besides the Kurds, we now have Iran having a "surprise military drill," on its border with Turkey. did anybody realize Iran has a border with Turkey?

The article says that Iran and Syria will stand back and watch Erdogan destroy the Kurds, which is fantasy. Assad Junior, Iran and Hezzbollah must realize Erdogan is coming after them next, so any aid they give to the Kurds fighting Turkey is in their best interests, especially when the Turks go over the border into Iraq and head towards Damascus. Russia must be in panic mode now that Erdogan has shown his true colors and is going after Damascus and Israel.

Acc to him, 1000s of Kurds from Kobani are right now fleeing to a US military base near Lafarge cement factory, to seek US soldiers' protection.

Donald Trump: America Invading the Middle East ‘Worst Decision Ever Made’

President Donald Trump defended his desire to end U.S. military engagement in the Middle East on Wednesday.

“GOING INTO THE MIDDLE EAST IS THE WORST DECISION EVER MADE IN THE HISTORY OF OUR COUNTRY!” Trump wrote in all-caps on Twitter, noting the United States spent $8 trillion dollars in the ongoing wars and subsequent security in the region.

“Thousands of our Great Soldiers have died or been badly wounded,” he wrote. “Millions of people have died on the other side.”

Trump argued the United States was drawn into invading Iraq by George W. Bush under a “disproven premise” of the threat of weapons of mass destruction.

“Now we are slowly & carefully bringing our great soldiers & military home,” he wrote. “Our focus is on the BIG PICTURE! THE USA IS GREATER THAN EVER BEFORE!”

President Trump has faced opposition from the foreign policy establishment in Washington for his efforts to remove troops from Iraq, Afghanistan, and Syria and bring them home.

“The stupid endless wars, for us, are ending,” he wrote on Twitter, defending his decision to move 50-100 troops away from the Turkish-Syrian border.

Trump announced plans to withdraw 7,000 troops from Afghanistan in December 2018 and in August he announced the withdrawal of over 5,000 troops.

Ideally, the president would like to reduce the number of troops in Afghanistan to 8,600 but peace talks with the Taliban blew up in September.

Speaking to reporters on Monday, Trump said he would continue to pursue an “end game” in the Middle East, despite criticism from both political parties.

“We’re willing to do what we have to do, but there has to be an end game,” Trump said. “And if you stay, it’s going to be the same thing. Eventually, you’re going to have to leave.”

Fighting between various groups that has been going on for hundreds of years. USA should never have been in Middle East. Moved our 50 soldiers out. Turkey MUST take over captured ISIS fighters that Europe refused to have returned. The stupid endless wars, for us, are ending! https://t.co/Fbcem9i55Z

For the Kurds to have any chance of survival against Turkey's NATO ARMED MILITARY they must have full anti armor, and full anti aircraft missile ability, or they will be slaughtered en mass. So, have the Kurds been given either of these, Javelin anti tank launchers and missiles, or Stinger type anti aircraft misiles by the USA, or NATO forces, or bought them on the black market or captured them from Syrian, Al Qaida or ISIS forces since 2014?

There fixed it for you, Daniel. Turkish military authorities report they carpetbombed 181 civilian sites, raped a bunch of women, including 9 year old girls, stole everything not nailed down, chanted Erdogan is God, and began building a new Ottoman Empire city. Further, Erdogan told the Dutch to STFU when they whined about Turkish F-16 jets napalming a Kurdish child care center. Trump, well Trump was last seen huffing and puffing as he read the Three Little Ottoman Pigs to the Turkish diplomat who was sticking his tongue out at Trump. Leslie Graham said he will join with the 11 Republicans who voted to repeal Trump's border emergency executive order so he can get the 67 needed to impeach Trump.

I would say once the first pictures and videos of the Kurdish Genocide start to show up on you tube Trump is road kill, all the RINOS in the Senate will turn on him, and he will get impeached once the dead 5 year old Kurdish kids start to show up.

We haven't seen anything like this since the Russians raped every German woman over the age of 3 in the march on Berlin in 1945.

What was Trump thinking when he green lighted Erdogan to murder all the Kurds he can get his hands on. And what will Trump do if 10,000 Kurds show up outside our military bases?

IRAN HOLDS MILITARY DRILLS NEAR TURKEY, TELLS IT TO STOP SYRIA ATTACK AS RUSSIA ACCUSES U.S. OF 'DANGEROUS GAME'

A Russian soldier stands guard outside a checkpoint in Suran, Hama province on September 25. With military backing from Russia, Iran and various allied militias, President Bashar al-Assad (whose face is seen on a poster in the background) has reclaimed most of Syria from rebels and jihadis since 2015, leaving only Idlb in opposition hands and about a third of the country under the control of the Syrian Democratic Forces, who face a new threat from Turkey allied insurgents.

Iran launched unannounced drills Wednesday near its border with Turkey as the Islamic Republic warned its neighbor not to move forward with its military operation in northern Syria and Russia criticized the United States for setting up a potentially deadly scenario in the region.

Iranian army chief Major General Abdul Rahim Mousavi oversaw what was described as surprise exercises designed to "measure the readiness, mobility and speed" of his forces in the country's northwest. Without specifying the exact nature of the maneuvers, Mousavi explained in an official release that the results of the drills were positive.

"This is a good message for the great Iranian nation that its soldiers and children are fully prepared to carry out their missions to counter any possible enemy movement," Mousavi said, saying the troops are "at the peak of their readiness."

"The message to the enemies is that if they make the wrong calculations, they should know that the children of this land are ready to resist with their full power at any time and place," he added.

The drills came as Iran, an ally of the Syrian government, continued to voice concerns toward pro-opposition Turkey's planned incursion into northern Syria. The operation planned to target both the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG), the major component of the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces, and the Islamic State militant group (ISIS), both of which Ankara considers terrorist organizations.

"We have made it clear that the solution to establishment of security in the northern Syrian and southern Turkish borders is possible only with the presence of the Syrian army and we must provide all grounds for the Syrian military presence in these areas," Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said when in a cabinet meeting, according to his office. "The Americans must leave the region, and the Kurds should cooperate with the Syrian Army, which is actually their own country

"The path chosen today and the agreements that are happening behind the scenes will not benefit the region, and we call on our friend and brother Turkey and its government to pay more attention and patience in such matters," he added.

The U.S., which is opposed to Iran's presence in Syria and disavows the government due to alleged war crimes, has repositioned its forces out of harm's way ahead of the Turkish assault, which reportedly began Wednesday with strikes on Kurdish militias positions. The U.S. has offered conflicting statements about its views toward the coming attack, with President Donald Trump suggesting he was in support of Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan's long-threatened military actions, while the Pentagon described his moves as "unilateral" and signaled disapproval.

The Syrian Democratic Forces have been the major local partner of the U.S.-led fight against ISIS in Syria since 2015, when focus began to shift away from an increasingly Islamist opposition trying to overthrow Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who received a major boost via a Russian military intervention around that same time. ISIS has since been largely defeated by the rival U.S.-led coalition and pro-government campaigns.

"Fighting between various groups that has been going on for hundreds of years. USA should never have been in Middle East. Moved our 50 soldiers out. Turkey MUST take over captured ISIS fighters that Europe refused to have returned. The stupid endless wars, for us, are ending!," Trump tweeted Wednesday.

With the rebels and other jihadis of Syria's insurgency also widely defeated, the government and the Syrian Democratic Forces were left as the two major factions in the country. Months of negotiations between the two have so far been unsuccessful and both Moscow and Damascus have blamed Washington's de facto support for Kurdish self-rule.

"Americans must understand that the processes that have unfolded in the north-east of Syria over the past few years are a direct violation of the requirements of the UN Security Council resolution on respect for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Syria," Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said during a joint press conference with his Kazakh counterpart.

"The Americans organized quasi-state structures there, ensured their livelihoods, vitality, and very actively promoted the Kurdish issue in a way that aroused opposition among the Arab tribes traditionally living in these territories. This is a very dangerous game," he added, calling for "serious changes in their inconsistent, contradictory policies."

Will the Syrian Kurds Ally With Iran and Russia Against Turkey?

The Turkish military has begun bombing northern Syria, empowered by Donald Trump’s public announcement that he had green-lighted a Turkish operation into territory occupied by U.S.-backed Kurdish forces, essentially exposing a key ally in America’s fight against the Islamic State (ISIS) to new dangers.

Trump announced that the Turks had his blessing on Sunday. By Tuesday night, Turkish shells began flying across the border and opportunistic suicide bombers launched an attack on the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in the former ISIS capital of Raqqa. The following day, Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan announced the beginning of Operation Peace Spring. By nighttime, Turkish tanks were rolling over the border.

The operation will include an army of Islamist rebels opposed to the government of Bashar al-Assad, Erdoğan claimed.

Kurdish leaders are now scrambling to prepare for the worst. Gen. Mazloum Kobani, the top SDF general, announced amid the haze of strategic surprises, diplomatic miscommunication, and public backpedaling, that an alliance with Assad against Turkey is “on the table.” The SDF is “ready” for talks with Assad, SDF-affiliated diplomat Sinam Mohamad told the National Interest. But Assad’s two main backers—Russia and Iran—are towing a careful line.

The Rojava Information Center, a media organization based in northeast Syria, confirmed to the National Interest that pro-Assad forces are massing near Manbij and Deir ez-Zour, but it’s not clear whether they will help or hinder the Turkish campaign. David Ignatius, a Washington Post columnist, claimed that Assad was mobilizing his forces for an invasion of his own.

On Wednesday, Iran signalled the opposite. According to the Associated Press, Iranian forces were conducting drills along Iran’s border with Turkey in the morning. By nightfall, Speaker of Parliament Ali Larijani cancelled his planned trip to Turkey.

Public statements from officials only make the situation murkier.

“The state of Turkey is worried about its southern border. To worry about this is its right,” said Iranian president Hassan Rouhani during a televised cabinet meeting. “But it must choose the correct path.”

“We don’t think that this path will be a beneficial path, a good path for the region, for Syria, for Turkey,” Rouhani continued. “The main problem now is not northern Syria, is not east of the Euphrates. Our first problem is Idlib. It is a place where all the terrorists have been gathered. We hope that other countries, especially Turkey, cooperate and focus on this problem so that we do not face a new problem.”

Idlib is the last province of Syria dominated by Islamist rebels. Turkey has several observation posts, which have been attacked by pro-Assad troops several times over the summer.

Russian leader Vladimir Putin called Erdoğan on Wednesday to warn him against endangering the peace process. According to a Kremlin readout of the call, both leaders agreed to preserve the territorial integrity of Syria.

Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov condemned U.S. support for the SDF, but also left the door open for a Kurdish role in Syrian politics.

“The Americans have established quasi-government structures there, keeping them functional and actively promoting the Kurdish issue in a way to cause dissent among the Arab tribes traditionally populating these territories,” he said, according to Russian state media. “Our stance unequivocally proceeds from the need to solve all problems of that part of Syria through dialogue between the central government in Damascus and representatives of the Kurdish communities that have traditionally lived in these territories.”

According to Fawri Hariri, an Iraqi Kurdish official who met with Lavrov, the Russian foreign minister promised to help mediate between Damascus and the Kurds.

“I think they'll try to reach arrangements with everybody involved. That’s certainly been the pattern to date with Russia in Syria, cutting deals with everybody,” said Anna Borshchevskaya, a senior fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy.

“Iran’s established position has been to encourage the Kurds to reach a kind of compromise with Assad to prevent any kind of Turkish invasion in that part of Syria,” said Hamidreza Azizi, assistant professor of regional studies at Shahid Beheshti University in Tehran. “There have been real efforts in place by the Iranian side to push the two sides toward compromise.”

But the SDF is not just “the Kurds,” and has grown to include many anti-Assad forces under U.S. protection.

In a recent report published by the Wilson Center, Amy Austin Holmes estimated that between 50 percent and 70 percent of SDF fighters are Arab. About 60 percent of the fighters she interviewed told her that a political solution is impossible while Assad is in power.

Late on Tuesday, Iranian foreign minister Javad Zarif condemned any Turkish military action, but also brought up the Adana Agreement of 1999. In the pact, Syria had agreed to cut off its support for Kurdish guerrillas in Turkey and expel Kurdish nationalist leader Abdullah Öcalan.

Azizi explained the comments as a “shift in Iran’s position from trying to reach the compromise between the Kurds and Damascus to trying to reach a compromise between Turkey and Damascus.”

“I think [Russia] wouldn't be happy with a major offensive, but at the same time, if there was a smaller incursion, they would not be as opposed to it as they publicly state,” Borshchevskaya said.

“For the likes of the [Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, and those that are actually present in Syria, they would rather deal with a Turkish presence than an American presence,” said Dina Esfandiary, International Security Program Fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School's Belfer Center. “Certain members of the Rouhani administration would rather have the Americans there, because at least they’re a presence that can be counted on, and they’re supposed to be helping the Kurds keep the peace, et cetera, whereas the Turks will not be able to do that.”

The SDF has struggled to keep a lid on the al-Hawl, a prison camp holding tens of thousands of former ISIS members. Several weeks ago, Syrian Democratic Council Executive President Ilham Ahmed told the National Interest that the prison has experienced several escape attempts. On Monday, SDF Gen. Mazloum Kobani warned NBC News that guarding al-Hawl is now a “second priority.”

Soon after Turkey began its operations, Kurdish media reported that several ISIS women were reported to have escaped following at riot at al-Hawl. The Rojava Information Center told the National Interest that Turkish forces have bombed other prisons holding ISIS members.

When asked about the current situation, U.S.-led anti-ISIS coalition referred the National Interest to the Pentagon, which has yet not offered any comment.

Erdoğan hinted that he intends to stay in Syria for the long haul. At the United Nations General Assembly on September 24, he proposed extending a “safe zone” from the Turkish border to Raqqa and Deir ez-Zour—almost a third of Syria’s territory—to resettle three million Syrian refugees.

Turkish warplanes have bombed Ayn Issa, the capital of the SDF’s statelet, according to the SDF spokesman’s office. The Rojava Information Center and the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights have confirmed this.

In January 2018, Erdoğan had attempted this plan on a smaller scale. Turkish troops attacked the SDF in the enclave of Afrin, installing an Islamist rebel government in their stead. The Turkish-backed rebels confiscated property from locals, and took the opportunity to resettle thousands of refugees from elsewhere in Syria.

“[Iranians] are concerned that the Turkish invasion and the resettlement of the Syrian refugees—and those members of armed groups affiliated with Turkey—in the Kurdish areas will change the demographic structure of those parts of Syria to the detriment of the Assad government and Damascus,” Azizi said.

A few hours before Trump’s Sunday night announcement, Iranian foreign minister Javad Zarif addressed the Iranian parliament about Turkey’s role in Syria. A member of parliament from Mahabad, a predominantly Kurdish province, asked the foreign minister about Afrin.

“I expressed my opposition in Turkey, and President [Rouhani] was also opposed to this matter. We believe that the rights of the Kurdish people in Syria must be protected. We believe in respecting the rights of all the people in the region, and international borders,” Zarif responded. “Of course, the security of Turkey must also be protected, but security is not protected by means of a military expedition.”

I have to get caught up to speed on this thread, just came on the forum. I am feeling very unsettled today...the evil is having a field day.

It is a lie that "ISIS has been defeated." Remember, Trump said that- more than once.

The Kurds were help in controlling ISIS. Now ISIS is going to go gangbusters.

I have a real bad feeling. Thankful that I am on the Winning Team, even though I know I am not Worthy....a Free Gift that anyone can choose to Accept and Obey.
