    5 2019 fundraiser update and a question

    Hi everyone!

It looks like we're probably going to make our goal by the end of the week. This year's capital expenses included:

    8 new SSD drives ($2000)

    XenForo forum software ($400)

    Professional install ($500-$1200)

And of course the standard ISP annual costs, the CPA cost and various little things (which aren't capital expenses.)

All that being said, I was just thinking - what about expanding the server RAM? Currently we have 384 gigs of DDR4 ECC RAM. It cost us $1000 per 128 gigs. Do we want to add another 128 gigs? (Servers are notoriously memory-hungry). It would give us a half terabyte of RAM, but we'd need to come up with another grand. (Of course, we can wait until next year; it's not necessarily "mission critical.")

The reason I ask now is because with the new drives and new software, the server is going to be completely rebuilt. Might now be the best time to add RAM? Now granted, it's no big deal to add the RAM later. I was just having this conversation with myself on the way to the local UPS store, so I thought I'd put it out there for discussion.

Again, this is NOT mission critical at this time.

NOTE: We have successfully funded the extra memory - THANK YOU ALL!

I think that might a lot to ask seeing as people have given a lot already...

Yes, I know. I'm just looking for opinions.

Maybe it would be better to see what kind of performance the new drives and software have, first?

I can go either way, but it may be pretty difficult for a lot of folks out there to pull another rabbit out of their hat.

One option might be to wait perhaps six months for the RAM upgrade....or

If you can get nine other folks to pledge $100 I'm in for another hundred bucks to help out. There should be at least ten of us out of the thousands of members that can do this without resorting to selling blood, or perhaps 18 folks at $50 each. I'll still ante up $100. Call us Gold Star contributors or something.

    Who'll match me?

Good call. It might not be needed yet, and adding an extra thousand to next year could be all that's needed.

Dennis, I think you should go for it...increase the RAM..

will schedule another contribution for the first of the month...

who knows what another year will bring..and like you say, RAM can be added at anytime..yet doing such at the rebuild would be the time

and cheaper in the long run.

I am going to send money first of next week when DW gets paid. She just got a new job and timeframe between old pay period and new is quite awhile.

I will. This site is important. So, we are up to 2. But I would want a fusion bomb.

I just mailed a check this morning in the same amount as the one I mailed last week. It can be for this new idea if it's not needed for the previous improvements. Use it anywhere you think is best.

    Dennis,

I am in for an additional $50....

    That makes $150....

As Shadowman said, there has to be a few TB2Kers out there that can contribute another $50 or $100 and get this done....

Dennis, once you get enough pledges, please inform the pledgers so we can send you the money....

I can send another ten bucks. I'd send more, but I'm still saving to get this house completely re-wired. Next year should be a little less tight (I hope, LOL!).

Dennis, You know what they say about people who have conversations with themselves. I find my self having very intellectual stimulating conversations with my self at times. It is when I start arguing with my self in public that people tend to walk away!

We are back we are going to send you 100. this year I hope that helps look for it in today or tomorrow on PP we are still trying to get everything unpacked.

Sounds like you're halfway there already, or nearly so. Wish I could send more, but my budget is usually planned out at least three months ahead of time and doesn't allow any more until at least September.

Hope people keep stepping up here and this forum will be the best it can possibly be!

I’m just sick of our very slow server over the past several months. Anything I can do to NOT have that keep happening is worth trying.

    So -

    New forum software

    New hard drives

    More RAM

    Server rebuild

I’m hopeful that these items will “cure” us.

Ask your colo if they can bring in 480 3 phase. That should put some bump in the rump.

Well, by my count my additional $100 puts us at or near the goal, Dennis. Glad you brought it up; it does seem that this would be a good time to get that done. PP has been sent

I thought there was a chance to do the moving ourselves, and reinvest the savings into the extra ram or drive or whatever it is we're talking about?

Okay, I’m placing the order now.

If you all would be so kind as to send in the funds, that would be great!

Fingers crossed that we’ll never be slow again.

Okay. Order placed. It will ship out tomorrow. The final two SSDs should arrive tomorrow and the memory by Friday. Then I'll take the combined "server upgrade kit" (heh) up to our admin guy in Dallas and he can schedule the process.

REMEMBER: during the rebuild process, all 6 of the old SSD drives will be removed and the 8 new SSD drives installed. At that point, ALL operating system and support software will need to be reinstalled and the virtual machines recreated. THERE WILL BE DOWNTIME FOR THIS, as it's a lengthy and complex process.

To all those to who pledged $'s for the RAM - you can send that money now.

    THANK YOU!!

Friday is payday, I'll send it then.

I can hear the new servers and RAM revving up from here.....

Wow folks. way to step up! I, for one, appreciate it yugely, and am confident I speak for most of us.

    THANK YOU

Count me in for $100. I haven't chipped in yet and I wasn't able to last year. Paypal on the way.
