What I Learned in Traffic Court (Georgia Edition)

I had to go to traffic court yesterday as a witness to a nasty accident.

I learned a few things, so if you ever get a ticket in GA pay attention....

    1) Show up!

If you fail to show up, DL suspended for 365 days, bond gone, and most cases there will be a warrant to arrest you.

    2) Don't argue with the Judge!

If you are a SuperSpeeder with a $1,000 ticket staring you down, don't argue with the judge and force a bench trial. End result will be Full fine, suspended DL for 3645 days, and probation for a year. The result without argument the ticket was offered at $200 and see you later. Not sure why the woman decided to argue. Dumb!

    3) If you want to get out of a charge, don't get homie to lie for you. The judge won't like it!

Result will be probation, lost DL for 365 days and a big fine.

    4) If you need a lawyer, get a good one.

I was amazed at the number of lousy lawyers people hired. They must have had discount Thursday for lawyers at traffic court yesterday. Result of lousy lawyers was suspended DL for 365 days, fine and probation.

    5) Confess, confess and throw yourself on the court for mercy.

Result, you get a fine and told thank you and sent on your way.

    That's all.

Traffic court can be hilarious. We're having the big TX2K19 race here this weekend. If you have a fast car & $200, you can drag race at the Royal Purple track. Trouble is, there's already been several idiots arrested for racing on the Houston freeways.

Yeah, those judges don't seem to have much sense of humor.

I know a guy that showed up at traffic court acting as his own attorney. He piddled around wasting as much of their time as possible. I can't remember if he finally went the no contest route or just pleaded guilty. Anyway, the judge asked him why he just didn't mail it in..... He looked at the policeman and then looked at the judge and said he couldn't bear the thought of them sitting at home watching cartoons so he thought he'd use up some of their courtroom time.

    The judge was NOT amused.

Same guy was sworn in as a witness in another case in another judges' court and asked "Is this the same oath Bill Clinton took?" EVERYBODY in the courtroom laughed but the judge. Judge threatened to send EVERYBODY to jail for contempt if he heard one more peep.

Both these were told as true stories by people who were there.

The state of GA court system always reminds me of the old movie My cousin Vinny. Backwards, funny but vicious in handing out sentences just the same.

You would think so, but we had a decent mix of all races.
