16 I think it's stupid that the board sensors swear words...

Why is is necessary for the **** that are automatically substituted for certain letters in swear words here on the board?

We're all adults. We all know what is being said when we read "****ing"...
Do we really need the cupcake protection from 'bad words'?

Maybe it's trivial but when i wanna ****ing swear, it pisses me the **** off that I can't see my ****ing swear words...

There is a delicate line of syntax between ****head and shithead.

Sometimes one needs to be specific in semantic values here, in order to be less misunderstood.

I chose about 5 words that are considered blatant profanity in polite society and set the auto-censor to star them out. If you don’t like it, you’re free to start your own forum and institute your own guidelines. Report back in 6 months how that worked out for you.

There is actually a “gratuitous profanity” infraction already defined. It’s rarely used. People here are adults. They should be able to “self-police”. None of the staff want to get involved because someone can’t control themselves. We all hate when we have to. So I ask that you behave as if you were in a business meeting at your job. If you wouldn’t say it to your boss or the CEO, don’t say it here.

    **** yeah !!!

I usually moderate my language , whats acceptable here in Ireland is not the norm in the US, we tend to drop the F bomb frequently in a conversation , it'll be on the radio, on tv, youngsters to adults doesn't matter,
But I try and keep it to a mininum so as not to offend.

Honestly, I mislike getting censored every time I talk about a vice president from the late eighties or discuss college graduation rankings. But these things are so small they're scarcely worth it.

Besides, how hard is it to fire up your f**king rants in thus fashion? Everyone knows what the f**k you mean but no one has to hear the motherf**king words themselves.

Q-uayle is censored because of threatened legal action against TB. We used to discuss Steve Q’s material here all the time. Many people felt he was a crackpot and said so. Often. Q’s people got in touch with me and demanded that I remove all negative comments about him in discussions. Naturally I refused. The compromise was that he’d never be mentioned on TB again. Both sides went away happy. However, several TBers were unable to refrain from doing so, so I had to physically censor his last name.

If you don’t like it, you’re free to contact him and bitch about it. You’re also free to pay my legal bills and judgments should I get sued. (Are you able to wrap your self-centered head around that big boy?)

ETA: Bottom line is that there’s a reason for everything done here. Every rule came about out of the evolutionary process. The staff and I know the “why’s” of every last one of them. If you weren’t here in the first 3-4 years of the board’s existence, chances are you do NOT. Just ask any staff member.

Yep you have to be careful with bad words, you will get a warning and put in time out, ask me how I know.

And to be honest bad words should not be aloud on a daily basis, They will let you the mods slip one in here and there but to use them all the time and a lot is not aloud, and that is the way it is and should be..

Dogmanan is absolutely right. As adults, we're going to swear. Fine. The staff isn’t lurking out there ready to pounce on you for one too many “shits” of “dammits.” But we’re not a Longshoreman’s convention. If someone needs to swear that much, they need to re-examine their vocabulary.

ETA: Note the porn images aren’t allowed on TB either, either as attachments or avatars. That’s because there are standards of decency. Many websites allow both. We choose not to.

My daughters boy friend when I met him two years ago used to use the f word all the time when he talked and he would never filter his talking when the kids or the women were around, out of every twenty words 12 of them would be the f word, I use to tell him all the time if me and you are sitting in the garage drinking a few beers by are selfs say it all you want but when kids and women espicaly grandmas are around do not use it so freely.

Well after two years now of me jumping his ass daily he is finally getting it and uses a filter 99% of the time now.

One more thing. This place has been monitored by the alphabets since it began back in late 1997. We've had alphabets as members. We’ve had staff who were married to alphabets. Through them, we were informed of how far we could go and what was “okay” to say on Main. The Bomb Shelter came about because certain things posted on Main were factual but not “allowed” to be viewed in the open, but as long as we had a “members-only area”, we could post in there. (“Allowed” is the wrong word but it’ll do, and nothing classified was ever posted in there.)

By following those rules, we were promised that the bloodsucking gooberment would leave us alone.

Note that “they” didn’t monitor us out of concern that we were subversive. As it was explained to me, we were monitored to take the pulse of “flyover country”. These days, there are many conservative discussion groups, but back in the day, we were kind-of unique. As a side benefit of getting a feel for “real America”, we were informed of how to keep the place open safely. Kind-of a quid pro quo.

ETA: This is why we have a standing rule against advocating sedition, or making direct threats against elected officials or the government.

Swearing and vulgarity fall into the category of a linguistic "slippery slope".

Once a threshold has been breached, a flood will ensue.

That may be a quaint notion nowadays but it is still true and rather demonstrable in practice.

I can still remember a teacher telling us that vulgarity is a reflection of one's own lack of a proper vocabulary.

9 times out of 10, the person shouting, swearing and having a meltdown is not considered the sharpest tool in the shed.

    It's called "civility".

And yes.....I'm guilty of not being so civil at times. However, after a long career in the military where the "F"bomb is an adjective, verb, noun, pronoun, and many other parts of speech, and trust me I can cuss like the sailor I am enough to make a Marine blush, I have worked hard to become more civil. Not always successfully, but then I'm still a work in progress.

I do think that one of the major problems in our country, society, culture is that we've lost our civility, decorum and manners. A person may be a total ass but that doesn't mean they have to prove it.....all the time.
We have done so much, with so little, for so long....We can now do anything, with nothing, forever.

If you have to curse to get your point across you aren't going to get your point across. There is a microcosm here on TB that is unique. The real world rarely if ever operates like the community think around here. The real world is also not as forgiving. When I am out in the real world and I hear someone gratuitously tossing f-bombs and using "graphic creativity" to discuss … oh say someone's genetics … I usually wind up thinking that the gratuitous cusser is a low-IQ, low-information individual who cusses to drown out the fact they don't actually use their brain for original thinking. They get tuned out and I keep going. On the other hand if someone is able to convey an idea without the need to resort to cussing like Christmas tree ornaments on a conversational tree, then even if our opinions differ I'll at least give them a chance to express themselves and actually hear what they are saying.

C'mon, TB isn't a vacuum. Sometimes it is up at work. Sometimes it is up where the kids, grandkids can see what is being posted. You want to have the right to throw the stinky brown stuff around then those of us within throwing distance should at least have as much right to tone you down to keep us from being splattered. You want impunity and lack of accountability find a different forum to express yourself on and see how long that lasts and how hard it is to build a good reputation sounding like a ghetto snipe.

Is it really that difficult around here to use common courtesy with people you've known this long? Give the mods and everyone else a break. Not all of us feel the driving need (or desire) to cuss like a merchant seaman, nor do we want to listen to it.

I just want to point out that I've never really gotten the thinking behind censoring the last word on your list. In all my time here, I have only ever seen that word used here in its Latin origin as a word meaning "with". The others certainly get used and have no alternative usage, but that last one gets used fairly frequently in Latin form and virtually never in its slang form.

I have no problem with using polite language. IMHO it's more professional and provides for clearer discussion and well thought out postings. IMO dropping F bombs does not make for a stronger argument. The Q-uayle thing did surprise me once when trying to post a report about a completely different Q-uayle.

Not trying to be a suck-up, but Dennis you have the best website I've ever been a member of. Relaxed in areas that deserve it, and normal decency limits where needed. I have never felt muzzled on here. My biggest issue is that I'm usually on a work computer and can't always say what I want due to "their" standards, NOT yours. I say KUDOS Dennis for running a fine establishment!!

BTW, I didn't know that the site did the stars automatically. I always policed myself when typing. LOL.

As a complete aside, most websites will censor the dreaded “n-word”. I’ve chosen not to. We’ve had multiple discussions surrounding that single issue, and here’s what it comes down to:

If “they” can use the word, EVERYONE can use it. I will not enforce a double standard here. Not ever.

If the board didn't censor swear words, there'd be days when we see nothing else!

Isn't the main page, at least, supposed to be kid-friendly?

Anyway, I don't mind. I'm old enough to remember when not swearing but being forced to search for other words was a form of discipline that indicated a respect for the listeners/readers who didn't appreciate such.

Nobody ever swore in the presence of my Aunt, cause my Uncle would have walloped them!!

bold: Me either. I always tried to moderate my filthy language out of common decency. I have always thought that "extreme" profanity (I will not define) was unusual for publication which is actually what we have here.... publication.

We've become a bit more tolerant of strong language in recent years. I don't think that the street language adds anything to the discussion, although it may allow us to vent some anger. One of the things I like about Tucker is that he gives a calm presentation, and I've never seen him be rude to any of his guests. Would we really want to post something that would cause someone in the middle to conclude that the leftists were the more considerate group?
