Can't think of any reason in the world why I would know how cops might refer to marijuana. Can't imagine the mindset that thinks that's a must-have piece of information. Further can't imagine wanting to steal a traffic sign that has the number, just because to some people it's significant. If 420 gets you all lathered up, you can always print it in 72-point type on your PC on a hundred pages and paper your walls with it.

    Neither did I.
Never hung around with "dopers", nobody I knew did drugs, never was offered it (thank God) and never wanted it. I am "hooked" on regular cigarettes (smoked 60 years). That is bad enough. When I lose this 115lbs ON Keto diet, I will tackle the smoking. Looks like the Diabetes will be the first thing to go though, Blood sugar totally under control now, sometimes have to skip insulin because it is normal BG.(100) That is in only 3 weeks.

I don't know if the kids today still do it, but when I was younger it was a fad to steal an Interstate sign with your graduating year on it (for example, for 1995 they'd take an I-95 sign). A quick look at my Rand McNally shows I-19 running south of Tucson to the Mexican border, so I wonder if Arizona is seeing that this year?

My guess is the 4-20 refers to the criminal code in whatever states that use it for MJ infractions. In Minnesota, where I worked as a tech for a major law agency for 14 years, I never heard of it. I have heard of other signs that were commonly stolen, usually street signs.

FWIW (Urban Dictionary, corroborated by wiki)

    420
    drugs
So far the majority of you are incorrect.
    420's origin IS known.
the term 420 originated at San Rafael High School, in 1971, among a group of about a dozen pot-smoking wiseacres who called themselves the Waldos, who are now pushing 50. The term was shorthand for the time of day the group would meet, at the campus statue of Louis Pasteur, to smoke pot. Intent on developing their own discreet language, they made 420 code for a time to get high, and its use spread among members of an entire generation.
So there ya go, someone's parents out there invented the term 4/20.
    And remember this:
There are NOT 420 chemicals in Weed. It's about 315, the num. goes up or down depending on what you're smoking.
4/20 is NOT police code or Maryjane.
And that whole shit about Holland and 4/20 over there being "tea time" for smokers isn't true either.

My county here in MN implemented new 911 addresses in the year 2000. I lived on 420th St, but they quickly renamed it to Palamino after the signs disappeared.

    wow, what a crowd.

for the record, no one really knows where the "420" connection to mj started. anyone who says differently is just buying into folklore.

i can certainly confirm that no police/sheriff dept. I've ever worked with uses "420" to signify anything mj-related. it's not part of any 10-code, nor any criminal code derivation.

yes, every April 20th is a huge holiday to the MJ community, and is a huge shopping day here in Colorado, as well as other States where MJ is legal. It's referred to as the "Green Friday" of retail cannabis.

if that twists your mind, go look up "710" and its meaning to MJ...

4:20 is the time when it is time to smoke pot, amongst users they know what time it is when someone is rolling joints or getting their bong out.

LE brevity codes differ from jurisdiction to jurisdiction, even more so from state to state.

I doubt it's a brevity code, unless there are more in their list than most folks can remember. 10-codes and signals abbreviations cover it in most places.

For a long time I wanted to steal mile marker #285 going east of here, and gift it to a friend.

I took that sign out in 1980, driving his sister's car.
    Had just left Happy Hour.
And it was way past 4:20.

How about this? I always thought it referred to the California law number.

From Wikipedia: California Senate Bill 420 (colloquially known as the Medical Marijuana Program Act)[1] was a bill introduced by John Vasconcellos of the California State Senate, and subsequently passed by the California State Legislature and signed by Governor Gray Davis in 2003 "pursuant to the powers reserved to the State of California and its people under the Tenth Amendment to the United States Constitution."[2] It clarified the scope and application of California Proposition 215, also known as the Compassionate Use Act of 1996, and established the California medical marijuana program. The bill's title is notable because "420" is a common phrase used in cannabis culture.
"Every normal man must be tempted, at times, to spit upon his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats."

4:20 pm and light one up? Heck, I see them lighting up here at 9:00 in the morning if I'm out and about. There isn't a day that goes by if I don't see someone toking in their car at the stop light, in a parking lot, or walking down the street. It's no longer cocktail hour, it's anytime all the time. BTW, our mayor says no cannabis stores in our town will be allowed. Good! I don't live in town, but weed is readily available - obviously.

NJ's not big enough for a 420 mile marker.
But I do believe there are no 69 mile markers. No cute 68.99 they just don't install them.
