Sportscaster Warner Wolf Arrested for Removing the Word for 'Plantation' from Community Sign

Longtime D.C. sportscaster Warner Wolf was arrested for destroying a sign outside a gated community in Florida, because he claimed the sign was “racist.”

The sign Wolf defaced was the subdivision ID sign outside the “Classics Plantation Estates” in East Naples, Florida, Fox News reported.

At several past community meetings, Wolf had repeatedly insisted that the word “plantation” was “racist” and since developers would not listen to his demands to remove the sign, he took matters into his own hands and broke off the lettering outside the community.

Property manager Ken Heff told the Naples Daily News that Wolf “had his opinions about how it was a racist word and he didn’t feel that it should be in the name of (a) community, although plenty of communities throughout Florida use that name.”

During his February 7 arrest, the 81-year-old Wolf reportedly told police that the word “plantation” is obviously racist, and he objected to its use on the sign.

Surveillance video from November 30 shows Wolf jumping into a fountain pool that forms part of the sign’s landscaping and breaking off the lettering for the word “plantation.” Later, on December 13, Wolf gave the letters to the gate guard and instructed him to tell the managers that the word was offensive, police said.

Police did not report why the arrest came months after the act of vandalism.

Wolf was arrested and hit with one felony charge of criminal mischief. He was released after posting a $5,000 bond, the Collier County Clerk of Courts says on its website.

Wolf had a long career in Washington D.C. television and even appeared as himself in the 1985 film Rocky IV. He was a member of the Monday Night Baseball broadcast team for ABC in the 1970s and is best known for the catchphrase, “Let’s go to the videotape.”

The real question should be. Why is defacing a sign a feloney? Talk about your police state.

If the word "plantation" offends him so much, he should never come to Mississippi. Our landscape is still dotted throughout with plantations. The Old Waverly Plantation is the most well known.

Deal with it white snowflake. Life is full of offenses let alone manufacturing them. If I dwelled on everything that upset me in this environment I’d be heavily medicated.
What is the lake of fire? What is it's purpose? Is the lake of fire eternal hell? Is there any hope of escape for those cast into this lake?

My husband's very poor Pennsylvania Deutsch ancestors in VA and OH, who never had or could have afforded slaves, referred to their home place as their plantation......

It was just a common word used for their land.

    Never racist, just a "farm".

A few years back, we visited Costa Rica. A very diverse country with everyone pretty much getting along. Our tour guide described almost every agricultural enterprise as a "plantacion" meaning they grew stuff. Some were like a hobby farm and others were very large scale coffee, bananas, coconuts, cocoa, maize (corn), and a few more. So if the locals in a diverse country don't have a problem with the term, we should the USA?

You already know the answer, so why even ask that question?

Because today, in liberal minds, the word plantation is associated with slavery and Southern heritage. Therefore, it's racist.

The monetary damages are what considers it a felony. Or the number of times you commit the same offense.

Yep, fancy communities sometimes spend 20 or 30k on the fancy sign at the entrance gate.

He would have to go back very far in our history to remove the references to plantations. Since the landing of the mayflower, Plymouth and other settlements were called "plantations" and freemen who owned land were "planters."

For sure. You are correct- But I dont believe that the board is ready for that Red Pill. Yet.

Guess it's one of those, in the eye of the beholder, situations. First thing that comes to my mind when I hear the word plantation is that of a larger southern farm. I really have to think about it to remember a lot of the plantations were worked by slaves hundreds of years ago. Well before me time, so unless they want to drag up the past, let it go. Or are the words cotton, chains, railroads, etc. going to be abolished next?

Because it isn't his sign. Only 5K for bond. IMO his sentence should be to pay for the sign's repair, issue a public apology, and write a 5000 word paper on the development of the word "plantation."

His picture looks like he's a half-bubble out of plumb.

some of this stuff isn't commercial - it's art - BIG BUCKS - and it's copywrited basically - any restoration involved and the original artist/company must be consulted/involved >>>> some of these a-holes damaging & destroying landmarks are into felonies by just scratching the damn thing ....
